Naseema (left) at her house in Grandwan with her daughter, Shazia.
Shefali Rafiq
Naseema Akhter was just 20 in 2002 when her husband, Syed Anwar Shah, left for work and never returned. Shah was one of thousands of young men forcibly taken away by Indian forces or, in some cases, unknown gunmen. Government officials allege these men crossed over to Pakistan to train with separatist militants, but the families deny this.
Naseema was left with an 18-month-old daughter, Shazia, and the burden of family responsibilities and financial worries. Today, after her daughter got married last year, she lives alone in a two-room house in Grandwan, a village in Aishmuqam, south Kashmir. The loss of her husband has left a deep scar on her psyche.
"My mind tells me that my husband is not alive, but my heart is not ready to accept it," Naseema said, while visiting the local shrine. Shrines in Kashmir are often seen as healing places – especially for women.
For several years after her husband’s disappearance, Naseema would wake up in the middle of the night. “I would see him in my dream and then, when I woke up, I would realise I am living in a hell,” she said, fighting back tears. “I still get headaches for days at a time, and the nightmares won’t leave me alone.”
Instead of getting medical help, she seeks refuge at the nearby shrine. “I cannot afford to go to a doctor every week. But I have to pray for my health, for the sake of my daughter,” she said.
Naseema said her life would not have been as difficult if she had found her husband’s body. “This hollowness inside me can only be understood by someone whose loved one has disappeared,” she added.
Dr Majid, senior psychiatrist at the government hospital in Pulwama, who treats many such patients, said their depression is of the worst kind: “It is very important to have closure. These patients do not have that and it makes it even worse.”
The mental health crisis in Kashmir is increasing, following a lockdown (partly to do with the pandemic) that has lasted nearly two years. Majid, who is the only psychiatrist serving two districts (Pulwama and Shopian) said that almost 60% of his patients are women.

Dr Darakhshan Andrabi inspects ongoing construction works at the shrine of Hazrat Sakhi Zainuddin Wali at Aishmuqam.
Nobody will be allowed to incite people against the reformatory decisions of the Waqf Board. Sufi-shrines cannot be allowed to be made business-centers by a few individuals anymore : Dr Andrabi
Shakir bhat
Srinagar 28 Nov 2022: Dr Darakhshan Chairperson of Jammu & Kashmir Waqf Board Dr Darakhshan Andrabi today inspected the ongoing construction works at the shrine of Hazrat Sakhi Zainuddin Wali (RA) at Aishmuqam where Waqf Board has started work on modern complexes at the shrine on the public demand.
Taking note of some social media reports, Dr Andrabi instantly rushed to the shrine cancelling all her fixed engagements to undertake physical inspection at the shrine. She took stock of the construction work being done there; spoke to the engineering experts, Waqf Board Engineers & the contractors. She also discussed the issue with the public delegations in detail. Dr Andrabi issued instructions for improving the quality of construction and expediting the work so that it was completed in time. Dr Darakhshan Andrabi paid obeisance at the shrine and later spoke to the media and assured the public that in the new Waqf Board transparency and accountability will be ensured. Dr Andrabi said that with the help of public support only, the Waqf Board can achieve the goals of purifying the sufi shrines of J&K from the filth of political intervention. "Many opportunists are hurt and disturbed by our reformatory steps and decisions, but the majority of the devotionally recharged people of the land have welcomed our decisions. There is a big change in the shrine management everywhere but yet many more reforms are to follow," said Dr Darakhshan Andrabi. Briefing about the digitization process in Waqf, Dr Andrabi said that soon all major shrines in J&K will be under CCTV surveillance & within a few months we will introduce e-payment systems at the shrines. "The Waqf educational institutions will also undergo major transformations. Rent management system is being upgraded and we are hopeful to enhance our income from our assets manifold soon, “said Waqf Board Chairperson. She in strong voice rejected the claims of all those who are now and then presenting themselves before media as the qualified and eligible receivers of donations for their individual luxuries & said that nobody will be allowed to mint money at shrines and all those individuals who want to serve at the shrine may donate their services for which they are welcome. "Nobody will be allowed to turn sufi-shrines into individual business centers and the Waqf Board will take on all those strictly who, for their cheap media coverage, go to the shrines and speak to the media against the Waqf directives. We have taken these decisions as per the provisions of the Central Waqf Act & nobody will be allowed to incite people. Those who indulge in such provocative statements will be dealt with as per the law," said Dr Darakhshan Andrabi. She later visited the shrine at Sarbal in Pahalgam & took stock of the facilities there. Executive Magistrate of the Board Ishtiyaq Mohiuddin accompanied Dr Andrabi.

★ ‘Superman, Salman ka fan’: Kashmir artisan weaves silken carpet for Bollywood’s ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’!
Feb. 22, 2022
Srinagar: A Kashmiri artisan has weaved an image of Salman Khan on a silk carpet to express his love for Bollywood star.
Forced to sit idle during the Covid lockdown, it took Mohammad Hussain Bhat six months to weave the carpet.
He now wishes to gift the carpet to Salman Khan whom he calls a ‘real hero’.
“We were left without work during the Covid lockdown. That is when I decided to weave this silk-on-silk carpet of Salman Khan. He is a real hero and I want to gift this carpet to Salman. It took me six months to weave this carpet,” Bhat told The Kashmir Monitor.
Bhat, who hails from the Fateh Kadal area of the old city, said he also wanted to promote Kashmir carpets through his act.
“During the successive Covid lockdowns, artisans suffered a lot and I thought of doing something that will promote our craft. Our family has been weaving carpets for the past 40 years but artisans continue to suffer. I hope Salman Khan takes note of this and accepts my gift. I am also hopeful that my carpet will promote Kashmir craft in the process,” he said.
Salman Khan, who has shot several films in Kashmir, has lots of fans in the Valley.
Interestingly while shooting for ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’, Salman had come across a 75-year-old poor woman and built a house for her in the Aishmuqam area of South Kashmir.
Now, the lady and her entire family, especially her grandsons celebrate Salman’s birthday every year.
The Bollywood start had also thanked the Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Department for their support after shooting for Race 3 in 2018.
“Thank you #Jammu & #Kashmir tourism for all the support and the wonderful experience for #Race3. (sic)”, Salman had then tweeted.
