Day 1: Trying to get to Uganda (spoiler alert: still not there)

One way to get into the way of communication for the next 6 weeks: writing the updates on the trip in English, here we go.

We left yesterday just after noon. After getting through security check and passport control we could get to the gate quickly and before I even had the time to realize what was actually happening, we were high up in the sky looking out over our lovely little Holland. After a 3 hour flight we arrived at Istanbul airport to transfer to our flight to Entebbe, 1,45 hours later. Still, no problems at all. But then.. some phones don’t seem to change their time together with the time zone they’re in and so they each gave different times. As far as we could find out from the airportclocks, we still had enough time to go to the gate and get the transfer. That’s where we went wrong. We somehow missed an hour because of the confusion with our phones and when our flight was called by the intercom for final boarding, it was too noisy in the airport to realise we could still run and get it. Just as we got to the gate it closed. 1 minute earlier and we could have quickly gone through but no luck. Seeing our plane stand outside with closed doors about to take off, ouch… Luckily, all three of us are quite good at anger/stress management. This seemed to be sufficient as we were sent to different counters over and over again to arrange new tickets. Finally, we managed and we could get the next plane, which departures exactly 24 hours after the original one. All right, stressful stuff was arranged and after calling ourselves stupid multiple times and blaming the airport for being chaotic and we could kinda see the adventure side of it. Which meant getting a Turkish visa for 1 day, finding a bus to take us to the city center and find a hotel for the night. We were helped by a very friendly, yet somewhat attached, guy who knew a cheap hotel not for from the busstop. As he was not Dutch we could easily discuss what was going on and what we would do as we followed him through the city. We arrived at the hotel a little later and decided to get a room for the three of us, make our own payment, say thanks a lot to the guy who helped us and went up to our room. As we went over the past 12 hours we felt most sad about the fact that we had to wait 24 more hours to be in Uganda.

After writing all of this down, it is now 06:21 (I’m still not sure if this is still the Dutch time zone or Turkish one but eitherway; it’s early). I slept badly and the idea of dragging myself through the city all day to have a broken night again kills the mood a little. Hopefully my unability to sleep while traveling finds that it is really needed to sleep on the plane so that when I wake up tomorrow, all I will see is Africa.

So far it’s an adventure, not exactly the one we expected but I guess in the end things could have gone a lot worse. And since we are stuck in what is supposed to be one of the most beautiful cities in Europe and neither of us has ever been here before, we might as well just enjoy it. 24 hours in Istanbul, let’s go!
