13 Coolest International Destinations You Can Visit Without a Passport
YOU DON'T NEED A STAMP TO EXPLORE THESE SURPRISING GETAWAYS.
When it involves traveling overseas, there's one essential thing you usually got to bring: a passport. But did you recognize that you simply can attend areas outside of the mainland us without a blue book? (And we're not talking Hawaii or Alaska!) From a tropical paradise in Central America to family-friendly islands across the Caribbean, there are a couple of secret places you'll visit without a passport—and we're here to inform you exactly the way to get there. So, read on, and determine where you'll skip the stamp on your next international vacation.
1 Montego Bay, Jamaica
Montego Bay is possibly the foremost popular tourist destination in Jamaica and a serious cruise liner port. Hit the "Hip Strip," formally referred to as Gloucester Avenue, for shops, art galleries, and colorful cafés. But, of course, you're in Jamaica, so do not forget the beach! Doctor's Cave Beach is that the hottest choice because of its turquoise water perfect for snorkeling. and every one these wonderful Jamaican attractions are often visited without a passport if you're traveling by water. If you're on a cruise that begins and ends within the states, all you would like maybe an occident Travel Initiative-approved document, sort of a certificate and government-issued ID, or an enhanced driver's license.
2 Cabo San Lucas, Mexico
Cabo San Lucas is found below the state of California, down on the southern tip of the Lower California peninsula in Mexico. This beautiful beach resort destination is understood as a favorite amongst the celebs for its proximity to Hollywood. you'll go there year-round and possibly see celebrities like George Clooney, Jennifer Aniston, or maybe Justin Bieber himself. Hit The Spa at Las Ventanas if you would like to urge a Jennifer Lopez-approved glow, and eat fresh at Flora Farms like Adam Levine. and fortunately, consistent with the Los Cabos Airport Immigration regulations, Americans don't need a passport to go to this beautiful destination. Instead, you'll use a certificate, voter registration card, citizenship card, or certificate of naturalization alongside a legitimate photo ID.
3 Puerto Limon, Costa Rica
You may think there is no way you're stepping into Costa Rica without a passport, seeing as it is a country in Central America—but re-evaluate. Many Miami- or San Diego-based cruises sail bent Puerto Limon, one among the most important cities on the coast of Costa Rica. Here, you'll explore the city's untouched nature by taking an open-air tram ride through the Veragua Rainforest or taking a pontoon boat through the Tortuguero Canal. And as a crop-heavy area, don't leave on faith out an area Costa Rican plantation, where you'll see how items like bananas, chocolates, or cacao beans are selected, harvested, and packed for export.
4 Belize City, Belize
You better believe you'll love Belize, even without a passport. This city in Belize (just like its Costa Rican cousin Puerto Limon) is accessible through cruises out of the states, from cities like New Orleans and Miami. And while Belize isn't known for its beaches, per se, here you'll explore the Belize coral reef, which hosts diverse, exotic marine life. But what you absolutely cannot afford to miss in Belize is that the Mayan ruins. the foremost popular is Altun Ha, located just 3o miles northwest of Belize City. For thousands of years, the Mayans occupied this space, and core structures were restored so that today, tours could take visitors to the present historic landmark.
5 Roatán, Honduras
Located off the coast of Honduras, Roatán is an island called in the Caribbean. But unlike other Caribbean destinations, this one offers paradise without the high tag. Around 30 miles long, this small island may be a popular retirement destination thanks to its exotic, yet laid-back tropical nature. And its best secret? it is a hot spot for skin diving. The island is surrounded by the Mesoamerican Reef, a subculture of coral reefs, mangroves, and magnificently unique marine life. While you will need a passport to urge there by plane, countries like Honduras are "waiving the need for cruise passengers unless those passengers start or end their voyage there." So as long as you're on a closed-loop cruise that starts and ends within the states, you're liberal to explore paradise sans passport.
6 Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands
The Northern Mariana Islands have the simplest of both worlds: Scenic oceans and mountainous landscapes. As a commonwealth of the U.S., the 14 islands that structure the Northern Mariana Islands are located within the northwestern Pacific on the brink of Guam, another unincorporated territory. Most of the population lives on Saipan, the most important island. you'll either visit one among its breathtaking beaches like Micro Beach or experience an off-road adventure to the rocky Forbidden Island. But the pièce de résistance is that the Banzai Cliff, a historic war II area on the northern tip of the island. As an area for both reflection and paying respects, the scenery off this cliff is breathtakingly beautiful. And a bit like Guam, per the U.S. Customs and Border Protection's Carrier Information Guide, U.S. citizens who travel directly between the states and one among the territories "without touching a far off port or place," aren't required to present a passport.
7 Hamilton, Bermuda
Nestled within the middle of Bermuda is Hamilton, the island's capital. the town is understood for its pastel-colored buildings that line the harbor and house beach-chic boutiques and native restaurants. Visit the town Hall and humanities Centre for a few fascinating 17th- and 18th-century European paintings or the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute if you are looking for marine exhibits and ocean artifacts. But if you would like to travel to the simplest a part of Bermuda, you will have to travel across the town to Horseshoe Bay Beach—one of the world's most Instagrammable beaches, with blush pink sand and crystalline water. to urge here without a passport, take a closed-loop Royal Caribbean cruise from Cape Liberty, New Jersey.
8 Tumon, Guam
As an unincorporated U.S. territory, Guam is probably the furthest American-based place you'll visit, nestled within the Philippine Sea near Australia and South Asia. Tumon is found on the northwest coast of the territory, referred to as the middle of Guam tourism. There you'll visit UnderWater World, one among the most important tunnel aquariums within the world. or maybe take a visit to Punta Dos Amantes, a clifftop destination with scenic ocean views. And while having a passport is suggested for anyone traveling to Guam, there are some loopholes for U.S. citizens where they'll be ready to get out of it. Videos say Americans can visit the world passport-free if traveling directly from the mainland, Alaska, or Hawaii, and that they have any proof of citizenship sort of a certificate or certificate of naturalization.
9St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands
Located within the Caribbean, St. John is that the smallest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, but it is the perfect destination for anyone who loves natural beauty. Nearly two-thirds of the island is haunted by Mary Islands park, which shelters forests filled with many colorful birds from cuckoos to warblers and hummingbirds. But when you are not getting your forest fill, visit the gorgeous Trunk Bay beach, which has sugar soft sand and a treasured underwater snorkeling trail. Like most U.S. territories, you do not need a passport to travel here, but the U.S. Virgin Islands tourist center recommends carrying a raised-seal certificate or government-issued photo ID as you would possibly get to "show evidence of citizenship."
10 Montreal, Canada
Contrary to popular belief, as long as you're traveling by land or sea—so as an example, in your car—you aren't required to point out a U.S. passport thanks to the occident Travel Initiative. Instead, you ought to carry along proof of your citizenship and a legitimate photo ID. But if that creates you nervous, there are closed-loop cruises that begin from various New England cities and sail to Montreal. This French-speaking Canadian city is as close as you'll get to Europe without a passport. Here, you'll enjoy French pastries like macarons or visit historic landmarks that rival those in Paris, just like the Notre-Dame Basilica of Montreal.
11 Nassau, Bahamas
The Bahamas is one of the foremost popular cruise destinations from the states, and like many who've gone known, you do not need a passport. because the capital of the Bahamas, Nassau is found off the shore of the mainland on its island. One feature that draws tourists is the pastel-colored Colonial buildings, just like the Government House which may be a bright shade of pink. But Nassau, of course, is not just about the buildings—it's about the beach retreats. Within the past few years, a mega-resorts opened in Nassau called Baha Mar. The 1,000-acre, $4.2 billion property is comprised of three hotels: the Grand Hyatt, SLS Baha Mar, and Rosewood Baha Mar. And when hunger strikes, breeze by The Cove at Atlantis for fresh seafood at Fish by chef José Andrés.
12 Vieques, Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico is perhaps the foremost well-known U.S. territory, so there is no got to stress over getting a passport before visiting. As long as you're directly traveling from the states or another territory, it isn't necessary. So while you're there, you ought to visit Vieques, a little Caribbean Island off the territory's eastern coast. This area offers secluded beaches, beautiful blue-green waters, and therefore the best part? Wild horses that just roam the countryside. But if that does not roll in the hay for you, visit Mosquito Bay, a bioluminescent bay that gives other-worldly views that can't be missed.
13 San Juan, Puerto Rico
Don't recoil from the mainland of Puerto Rico, however. San Juan, the capital and largest city, sits beautifully on its northern coast. If you are looking for a wild tropical trip, visit the Isla Verde resort strip, filled with buzzing bars, nightclubs, and casinos. need a more calm, historic vacation? Take a visit to Old San Juan, the center of colorful Spanish colonial buildings and historic landmarks like La Fortaleza, where the governor resides, or El Morro, a Spanish fort that dates back to the 1500s.

NASSAU, BAHAMAS ADVENTURE
Before arriving in paradise. I had this trip to the Bahamas planned months and months ago. I booked a Airbnb hotel in Nassau, Bahamas and scheduled my delta flight for 10 days.
My scheduled boarding time was at 5:20am for my flight. I woke up at 5:20am and missed my flight, because the airport is a distance away. Delta Airlines customer service did an amazing job in getting me the next flight out free of charge. I made a stop in Atlanta, Georgia then a short flight later, I made it to the Bahamas.
When I arrived I had difficulty finding a taxi, but someone at the airport helped me get one. My driver dropped me off at the hotel and I was told by the employees that there was a system cliche and the Airbnb overbooked multiple guests. I had to move to another beautiful location because the wedding party was staying at the hotel. They provided me a room to stay at their other Airbnb location with an ocean view. This was an absolutely gorgeous place, with a kitchen, lounge area, deck, infinity pool, and a private beach! I couldn’t be more happy with my stay. The only downside to this location is that it is very far away from shops and restaurants. There are no sidewalks near this location and it’s very hard to catch a ride from a taxi or bus! Here is the view from the top of the deck overseeing the ocean!
This is my first Airbnb stay, and I’m very impressed with the professionalism of the hosts. Stay tuned for more information regarding the Airbnb. I gotta relax and enjoy my vacation in paradise!

Would you like to discover “the most beautiful place seen from space”? Set sail with your charter boat to the Exuma Islands!
Sapphire blue waters, pristine beaches scattered along the coast of hundreds of deserted islets or populated by luxury resorts, up to some bizarre peculiarities such as the iconic swimming pigs. These handful of features are just some of the reasons why the Exuma archipelago has become one of the major tourist attractions in the Bahamas.
CONTACT US FOR YOUR NEXT CHARTER IN EXUMA
In this short article, we find out why the Exuma Islands occupy a special place in the best sailing holiday locations ranking. Let’s start:
Where are the Exuma islands located?
The term Exuma refers to an archipelago belonging to the state of the Bahamas and arranged to form a thin line of islands, islets, and atolls long and narrow that runs along the Bahamian sea.
This chain is commonly divided into three main areas, Great Exuma Island, Little Exuma Island, and the scattered Exuma Cays.
Great Exuma is the largest and home to most of the large resort hotels as well as Exuma International Airport and the main city, George Town.
Little Exuma, as expected, is the second-largest island in the archipelago and is located just south of Great Exuma, connected to it by a bridge. Compared to its “big sister” it enjoys more tranquility and hosts the famous beach of the “Tropic of Cancer”.
North of Great Exuma, finally, there are the so-called Cays, an endless number of islands and islets, some of which are home to dream beaches and resorts. No nautical charter that crosses these seas misses the opportunity to spend even one day here snorkeling near its pristine beaches and coral reefs.

What port is better to choose as your starting point to reach the Exumas?
Although Miami is also a strategically perfect marina for sailing to the Bahamas, those who choose to set sail for this paradise location usually decide to do it from Nassau, Bahamas capital located on the island of New Providence, north from the Exuma Cays. An equally convenient alternative is landing by flight directly at the airport located in Great Exuma.
Why are they such a popular destination?
Exploring this archipelago means wandering from one island to another following the route leading you to a truly extraordinary experience linked in particular to marine life
Waters around the Exumas are in fact among the clearest in the world and this is the reason why they are appreciated by hundreds of divers and snorkelers who love to dive into large stretches of the sea so transparent that they can see the ocean floor. Two of the most visited sites are located in the Exuma Cays. They are “The Musician”, an underwater sculpture by the artist Jason DeCaires Taylor and the submerged airplane wreck, easily accessible and inhabited by hundreds of colorful fish.
The reason that made the Exumas so coveted is therefore its waters, so beautiful as to give emotions even to those who observe them from very far away, as in the case of astronaut Scott Kelly who from the international space station describes these islands as “The place more beautiful seen from space “.
VIEW ALL THE YACHTS AVAILABLE IN THE BAHAMAS
What are their main tourist attractions in Exuma?
Here is a must-see destinations collection worth reaching while sailing the Exuma Islands:
Big Major Cay
Also called Pig Beach, Big Major Cay is home to the famous swimming pigs. Taking a selfie while swimming with adorable pigs splashing around in crystal clear waters is a priceless experience and has long become a tourist must-have.
It is not clear how these sweet pink pigs arrived on this uninhabited island, whether they were the result of a shipwreck or if they were specially brought by some unwary breeder and then escaped. Today they have become endemic to the place and are a symbol of Exumas around the world. I recommend, do not show up empty-handed. Swimming pigs love cookies, bread, and whatever food you want to offer them!
Exuma Cays Land and Sea National Park
Created in 1958 with an extension of approximately 456 square kilometers, the Exuma Cays Land and Sea National Park was the first land and marine park established in the world with great success. It is a huge reserve where any type of fishing is strictly prohibited and has become a wildlife refuge immersed in a breathtaking marine environment ideal for scuba diving and snorkeling.
Staniel Cay
The island of Staniel Cay hides the famous Thunderball Grotto, a fantastic underwater cave. Its entrance is hidden underwater, but during low tide hours, you can swim to it and discover a world teeming with colorful tropical fish.
Stocking island
We end our tour with the legendary Chat ‘n’ Chill beach bar, located on Stocking Island and accessible only by boat. Ranked as one of the top 20 restaurants in The Exumas by Tripadvisor, Chat ‘N’ Chill offers Bahamian and American cuisine in a relaxed atmosphere and has become famous for its cocktails, fresh conch salad, and most importantly its roast pork. The “Sunday Pig Roast”.

'Catastrophic': Hurricane Dorian parks over the Bahamas

More
Practically parking over the Bahamas for a day and a half, Hurricane Dorian pounded away at the islands Tuesday in a watery onslaught that devastated thousands of homes, trapped people in attics and crippled hospitals. At least five deaths were reported, with the full extent of the damage far from clear.
The United Nations and the International Red Cross began mobilizing to deal with the unfolding humanitarian crisis in the wake of the most powerful hurricane on record ever to hit the Bahamas.
Dorian’s punishing winds and torrential rain battered the islands of Abaco and Grand Bahama, which have a combined population of about 70,000 and are known for their marinas, golf courses and all-inclusive resorts. The Grand Bahama airport was under 6 feet (2 meters) of water.
Bahamian officials received a “tremendous” number of calls from people in flooded homes, and desperate callers trying to find loved ones left messages with local radio stations.
One station said it got reports of a 5-month-old baby stranded on a roof and a woman with six grandchildren who cut a hole in a roof to escape rising floodwaters. At least two storm shelters flooded. The U.S. Coast Guard airlifted at least 21 people injured on Abaco. Rescuers also used jet skis to reach some people.
“We will confirm what the real situation is on the ground,” Health Minister Duane Sands said. “We are hoping and praying that the loss of life is limited.”
Strong winds from Hurricane Dorian blow the tops of trees and brush while whisking up water from the surface of a canal that leads to the sea, located behind the brush at top, seen from the balcony of a hotel in Freeport, Grand Bahama, Bahamas, Monday, Sept. 2, 2019. (AP Photo/Ramon Espinosa)
More
Tammy Mitchell of the Bahamas’ National Emergency Management Agency told ZNS Bahamas radio station that authorities had documented every call and were prioritizing them, but that rescue crews were forced to turn back in some cases because the wind was so fierce and the water so high.
“We understand what everybody was going through,” she said. “We wanted to go out there … but that’s not a risk we’re capable of taking. We don’t want people thinking we’ve forgotten them.”
Ahead of the storm, over 2 million people in Florida, Georgia and North and South Carolina were warned to evacuate as Dorian closed in on the Sunshine State on a projected track expected to take it up the Southeast coast.
The threat of a direct hit on Florida had all but vanished, but the storm was expected to pass dangerously close to South Carolina—and perhaps strike North Carolina—on Thursday or Friday, according to the National Hurricane Center.
In the Bahamas, Red Cross spokesman Matthew Cochrane said more than 13,000 houses, or about 45% of the homes in Grand Bahama and Abaco, were believed to have been severely damaged or destroyed. U.N. officials said more than 60,000 people on the hard-hit islands will need food, and the Red Cross said some 62,000 will need clean drinking water.

More
The Red Cross authorized a half-million dollars for the first wave of disaster relief, Cochrane said.
“What we are hearing lends credence to the fact that this has been a catastrophic storm and a catastrophic impact,” he said.
As of 11 a.m. EDT, Dorian’s winds had dipped to 110 mph (177 kph), making it a Category 2 hurricane, down from a terrifying Category 5 when it struck. The storm was centered about 45 miles (70 kilometers) north of Freeport and 105 miles (170 kilometers) east of Fort Pierce, Florida.
After standing still for nearly a day, it was on the move again, but just barely, pushing northwest at 2 mph (3 kph), or about as fast as a person walks. Hurricane-force winds extended up to 60 miles (95 kilometers) from its center.
NASA satellite imagery through Monday night showed spots in the Bahamas where Dorian had dumped as much as 35 inches (89 centimeters) of rain, said private meteorologist Ryan Maue.

More
The Bahamas’ health minister said that Dorian devastated the health infrastructure on Grand Bahama and that severe flooding rendered the main hospital there unusable.
Sands said the main hospital in Marsh Harbor in the Abaco islands was intact and sheltering 400 people but in need of food, water, medicine and surgical supplies. He said crews were trying to airlift five to seven kidney failure patients from Abaco who had not received dialysis since Friday.
Across the stricken islands, choppy brown floodwaters reached roofs and the tops of palm trees. Parliament member Iram Lewis said he feared waters would keep rising and stranded people would lose contact with officials as their cellphone batteries died.
“It is scary,” he said, adding that people were moving from one shelter to another as floodwaters kept surging. “We’re definitely in dire straits.”
To the south, the Bahamas’ most populous island, New Providence, which is the site of the capital, Nassau, and has over a quarter-million people, suffered little damage.

More
Leaving one person dead in its wake in Puerto Rico, Dorian hit the Bahamas on Sunday with sustained winds of 185 mph (295 kph) and gusts up to 220 mph (355 kph). It tied the record for the strongest Atlantic storm ever to hit land, matching the Labor Day hurricane that struck Florida Gulf Coast in 1935, before storms were given names.
Scientists say that climate change generally has been fueling more powerful and wetter storms but that linking any specific hurricane to global warming would require more detailed study.
Across the Southeast, meanwhile, interstate highways leading away from the beach in South Carolina and Georgia were turned into one-way evacuation routes. Several large airports announced closings, and hundreds of flights were canceled. Walt Disney World in Orlando planned to close in the afternoon, and SeaWorld shut down.
Having seen storms swamp his home on the Georgia coast in 2016 and 2017, Joey Spalding of Tybee Island decided to empty his house rather than take any chances with Dorian.
He packed a U-Haul truck with tables, chairs, a chest of drawers, tools—virtually all of his furnishings except for his mattress and a large TV—and planned to park it on higher ground. He also planned to shroud his house in plastic wrap up to shoulder height and pile sandbags in front of the doors.
“In this case, I don’t have to come into a house full of junk,” he said. “I’m learning a little as I go.”

Chapter One
i)
“Clarke?” Abby asks.
Clarke stops chasing her green beans around her plate and looks up questioningly at her mom. From the look on Abby’s face, it’s clear that it’s not the first time she’s called her daughter’s name.
“Sorry, what?” Clarke asks, blinking out of her daze.
“You okay?” Wells asks from beside her. He reaches for her hand under the table and squeezes it affectionately.
“Yeah, fine,” she says with a smile, lacing her fingers through her finaces’. “What were you asking, Mom?”
“If you and Wells had settled on your plans for the honeymoon,” she says, wiping the corners of her mouth with a cloth napkin as she sets her cutlery across her plate.
“Yeah,” Clarke says with an excitement she doesn’t entirely feel. “The travel agent called me back yesterday to confirm that everything was reserved and good to go. We’ve got the most beautiful resort in Nassau. The honeymoon condo is right on the beach. The water’s so blue. It’ll be nice to get away for a week.”
“Our flight leaves right out of Polis International with a connection in TonDC, and then straight to the Bahamas,” Wells chimes in. “We’ve got a hotel right near the airport for the night of the wedding, and then our flight takes off at nine the next morning.”
He’s so excited that Clarke feels guilty for the worry that’s been slowly pooling in her gut for weeks now. She knows that Wells is great. He’s got a good job, one that offers benefits and stability, he comes from a family much like her own, and he’s Clarke best friend. It’s only natural she marries someone she’s been close with all her life. She loves him. He’s good, good for her, and she loves him, but she feels like that’s not enough, like she doesn’t love him enough.
Raven assures her that it’s just cold feet, just pre-wedding jitters, and that it will all pass once Clarke and Wells are on their honeymoon, lounging in the sun and drinking Caribbean rum. But Clarke doesn’t know how to tell her that she’s had the same feeling, the same fear, ever since the day Wells proposed. She’d said yes on instinct, accepted without thinking about what saying yes could mean. It’s almost like regret--regret and fear that she’s keeping Wells from being with someone who loves him the way he deserves to be loved. The feeling’s gotten worse, has only started to really weigh down in the pit of her stomach, since the wedding preparations have been finalized. It’s real. It’s happening. And there’s no way out. She realizes, too late, that she’s gone back to staring at her plate.
“One more month,” Abby says excitedly, bracing Clarke’s shoulders. “One more month, and it’ll be June eighteenth. I can’t wait to see you walk down the aisle. Gosh, you’re so beautiful already; I can’t even imagine seeing you in your dress.”
“Thanks, Mom,” Clarke says, ducking her head to hide her blush. “It’ll be good.”
“I can’t believe my baby is getting married.” Abby tucks a strand of blonde hair behind her daughter’s ear. “Wells is a good guy, and you’re both going to be so happy together.”
“I know, Mom,” she says, because she does know that Wells is good. He’s great. But maybe he’s just not the greatest for her.
“We’re so proud of you,” Jake says, pulling his daughter into a hug. “Of both of you. I can’t wait to welcome you into our family, Wells.”
ii)
“Hey, Wells?” Clarke calls from the kitchen as she puts away the last of the dishes from dinner.
“Yeah, babe?” he calls back from his study.
“I’m gonna head over to Raven’s. Her dress came in today, and she wants me there when she tries it on.”
She takes the letter off the counter, the one she’s been staring at for three days but hasn’t opened yet. Clarke tucks it into her back pocket and takes her keys off the hook by the door.
“Okay! See you when you come home!”

Jamaica vs. the Bahamas: Which is the Right Vacation Destination for You?
Getting to Jamaica and The Bahamas
Exuma, The Bahamas; Lee Robinson/Unsplash
If you’re coming from the east or southeastern United States, getting to both Jamaica and the Bahamas is a breeze. Both are well-connected to major US airports, but as a considerably larger country in terms of population, Jamaica offers more flight options, making it easier to get to from Europe or South America. But don’t sleep on the Bahamas. Flight times from Miami to Nassau are a scant 45 minutes.
Jamaica: Jamaica is home to three major airports: Norman Manley International Airport just outside of Kingston, Montego Bay’s Sangster International Airport, and Ian Fleming International Airport (yep, named after the James Bond author) near Ocho Rios. Most Jamaican visitors fly into either Kingston or Montego Bay, though some smaller commercial aircraft do take passengers straight to Ocho Rios. Montego Bay gets the majority of the tourist flights, owing to its own popularity and its proximity to hotspots such as Negril. From Montego Bay, you can get direct flights not only to the U.S., Canada, and elsewhere in the Caribbean, but also to farther-off destinations, such as Lima and even Moscow. However, many such flights only operate seasonally. If you’d rather skip the big city in favor of sandier climes, flying into Kingston is your best bet if you want to escape the tourist masses and head up to the more chilled-out Port Antonio, home of the oft-photographed Blue Lagoon.
The Bahamas: The main airport in the Bahamas, Lynden Pindling International Airport, is located in its capital city of Nassau on New Providence Island. Regular commercial and charter flights operate from across the Eastern seaboard, and if you’re coming from Miami, Fort Lauderdale, or New York, you’ll have ample options to choose from. There are also a number of seasonal flights in operation from spots such as Boston, Montreal, and even Frankfurt in Germany, and BA operates a year-round flight from Heathrow. If you’d rather skip Nassau altogether, you can also fly directly to many smaller airports from the US. Exuma International Airport has year-round flights from Atlanta and Miami, while the Grand Bahama International Airport in Freeport offers connections to a number of cities in the Southeast.
Top Hotels in Jamaica and the Bahamas
Hotels in both Jamaica and the Bahamas run the gamut, from budget-friendly properties aimed at the spring break set to timeshares with kitchens to some of the most gorgeous luxury hotels in the Caribbean. However, all-inclusive resorts reign supreme in both destinations.
The Villa 16 at the Round Hill Hotel & Villas/Oyster
Our Jamaica Hotel Picks:
Families rave about Hotel Riu Montego Bay, with its dedicated kids’ club and lots of free watersports. If you’ve got a bit more cash to drop, Round Hill Hotel and Villas, is a swankier alternative with villas designed by Ralph Lauren himself, plus a kids’ club and the option to hire your own private nanny. Though frankly, you may want to leave the kids at home — adults-only hotels in Jamaica are some of the Caribbean’s finest. Options include Excellence Oyster Bay , which offers swank rooms, many with plunge pools or jetted tubs, and Secrets St James Montego Bay, with swim-up rooms and tons of free activities. Couples looking for something a bit more subdued and intimate could consider The Caves, a 12-room boutique property built on a sea-facing cliff.

View from the Sandals Royal Bahamian Spa Resort & Offshore Island/Oyster
Our Bahamas Hotel Picks:
Many of the best resorts in the Bahamas are in Nassau or on nearby Paradise Island. Couples looking for an easy, all-inclusive getaway can opt for the tried and tested Sandals Royal Bahamian Spa Resort & Offshore Island or opt for a stay at Cable Beach’s Breezes Resort & Spa Bahamas (which is only open to guests ages 14 and up). Those looking for an adults-only resort on Paradise Island nearby should consider Hotel Riu Palace Paradise Island, which offers all sorts of free water sports and easy access to the casino and entertainment at Atlantis. If you’ve got kids in tow, you’re better off booking a room at The Cove at Atlantis, which offers easy access to Atlantis and its Aquaventure waterpark, but is in a quieter, more secluded stretch of the beach. An excellent alternative for families on Grand Bahama Island, Viva Wyndham Fortuna Beach-An All Inclusive Resort offers gorgeous white-sand beaches and tons of family-friendly activities (including trapeze instruction) at mid-range prices.

Beaches in Jamaica and The Bahamas
Both Jamaica and the Bahamas are beach destinations with sparkling and swimmable Caribbean Seas, though each island has its own unique beach flavor.
Beach at the Breathless Montego Bay Resort & Spa/Oyster
Jamaica Beaches: Jamaica’s beaches are reason alone to visit the island, with plenty of stretches of white sand to plonk down on. Among the most popular include Negril’s Seven-Mile Beach, Montego Bay’s cozy Doctor’s Cave Beach (which has great facilities, including showers), and the cruise tripper-favorite: Turtle Beach in Ocho Rios. For something more subdued, make your way to Port Antonio, where you’ll find quiet beaches such as Frenchman’s Cove, which come with fewer facilities — and tourists.
Beach at the Old Bahama Bay/Oyster
Bahamas Beaches: As a nation of small islands, the Bahamas has a ridiculous amount of beach space to choose from, whether you’re into waves or quiet coves. The most popular include Cable Beach, with its white sands and water so turquoise that they look fake, and pretty Cabbage Beach on Paradise Island, popular for water sports. If you plan to head further out into the island chain, the little island of Bimini offers some amazing sandscapes, particularly on popular Radio Beach, with its calm waters. For something extra Instagramable, head to Big Major Cay in Exuma where you can go swimming with local resident pigs. Though, whether you should visit is subject to some serious ethical concerns.
Activities in Jamaica and The Bahamas
Both Jamaica and the Bahamas offer a good variety of water sports activities, beaches, and nightlife, but if you’re more into cultural activities, Jamaica is the solid winner. Bahamas feels more like a resort island that’s a paradise built for tourists. Jamaica has more people living there, and a proud culture dedicated to historical preservation.
Watersports at the Rose Hall Resort and Spa, a Hilton Resort/Oyster
Jamaica: Jamaica offers a ton of activities, enough to warrant multiple trips. Although many people forego the capital of Kingston altogether, it’s worth a trip if you’re interested in art, history, or reggae music. You can visit Bob Marley’s house and the famous Trenchtown neighborhood, see the works of Jamaican artist Edna Manley at the National Gallery of Jamaica, or immerse yourself in history at the 17th-century Fort Charles. If you’re sticking to the beach areas up north, you can break away for a day trip to the purportedly haunted Rose Hall Great House, visit Bob Marley’s birthplace, take a nighttime boat ride in the Luminous Lagoon, or head up to Dunn’s River Falls for a cooling and adventurous dip.
Additional Reading: Jamaica Excursions: Top 6 Things to Do in Jamaica
The Lazy River at The Reef at Atlantis, Autograph Collection/Oyster
The Bahamas: Activities in the Bahamas are more centered around beach life, though Nassau does offers some historic attractions. Head up to the Fort Fincastle Historic Complex for great views out over the city (pro-tip: it’s best accessed by climbing up the 66-step Queen’s Staircase). On nearby Paradise Island, you’ll find Atlantis Resort, known for its casino, thrilling Aquaventure waterpark, and endless aquariums.
Weather in Jamaica and The Bahamas
It’s definitely worth taking the weather into consideration when planning a trip to Bahamas or Jamaica. While there’s not a ton of difference in terms of what each of the two Caribbean countries offer, climate-wise, there are a few key differences.
Stuart Cove, Nassau/Oyster
Jamaica: Weather can vary quite a bit in Jamaica, which you’re most likely to notice if you plan to spend time inland or hit up a lot of different destinations on the island. Most coastal areas are in the 70s or 80s throughout the year, though some of the inland, mountainous areas (such as the coffee-growing Blue Mountains) can get way cooler. Rainfall peaks on the island in the summer months and into the autumn, and it’s generally rainiest in October and November.
The Bahamas: The Bahamas offers pleasant weather year round, usually in the high 70s or low 80s (Fahrenheit, of course), though it can get cool at night (bring a sweater). Although the Bahamas doesn’t get tons of storms, tropical cyclones and rainfall are more likely during the summer and early autumn.
Our Top Pick for a Jamaica Hotel: The Caves
The Caves/Oyster
Perhaps the quirkiest hotel in Negril (and we mean that in the best possible way), The Caves offers only 12 rooms and suites, most with ocean views and some with outdoor showers. There’s also a small pool and a staircase that leads down to the sea, but the real highlight here is the chance to sit down to a five-course dinner, served inside intimate dining areas built inside cliffside grottos. And yes, the experience is included in room rates.

Our Top Pick for a Bahamas Hotel: The Cove at Atlantis
The Cove at Atlantis/Oyster
The chicest section of the Atlantis Resort, this tower property caters to families and couples in equal measure, with excellent dining options, multiple pools, a lovely stretch of beach, and beautiful views from many of the 600-odd rooms. Families will appreciate the free access to Atlantis facilities such as the waterpark and aquariums. Bahamas Cruise 2009
September 20-24, 2009 Cruise Photos | Freeport Photos | Nassau Photos | Atlantis Photos
Sunday morning we woke up, got all of our things together and packed into the car, checked out, headed out into the extreme heat, cranked the a.c. in the car up, and headed due east. The ride to Port Canaveral wasn’t very long, but it was very flat and mostly boring until we hit the coast. Upon arrival at Port Canaveral, we headed over into the town in search for a drug store and breakfast, eventually heading into a BiLo to get supplies. Breakfast was a few moments later at Dunkin’ Doughnuts. Port Canaveral was a very charming little coastal town from what I saw of it, and I’d love to go back and watch a shuttle launch.
We headed over to port, dropped off our luggage, and parked. It was only around 11am and we couldn’t head to our rooms until later, so we sat on the Lido deck and had lunch after a bit. I had a burger and fries as oldies played over the speaker. Once we could go to the room, I headed down and took what few things I had to drop them off. Then I laid around until we got called to our Muster station for the drill.
Once we arrived at our Muster station, we received instructions and headed to the life boats. At this point, the boat was moving out of the docking area. I’d left my camera in the room, so I wasn’t able to take pictures, but once we were finished, I headed to the room, grabbed the camera, and headed up with my family to the highest point on the front of the ship to watch as we headed out to the open sea. People waved from the beach at Port Canaveral. Once we were out in the open, we headed back to our rooms to get ready for dinner. I had to take a shirt to my parent’s room so that we could use the steamer on it, as I didn’t want to be wrinkly for my first evening.
Dinner was promptly at 6:00. I had smoked duck as an appetizer, and steak for dinner. It was all very good, and dinner was nice with quick service and smiling servers. I was able to sneak down the shopping promenade earlier as I was exploring the boat to order mom and dad an Anniversary Cake as it was their official Anniversary. The cake ended up being the best desert I had on the whole cruise.
After dinner I headed back to the room before heading out around the boat. It was still early, and all of the night spots were still in kids & teens mode. We walked around outside and in; I grabbed something to eat here and there, spent some time on the Serenity deck with my brother and parents watching the sun set, and then we parked ourselves at a bar on the aft section of the ship. We weren’t there long until we wandered around some more. One lounge had a live band playing, but I wasn’t impressed.
We headed back to the room and I ordered room service. Kelly liked the way my food looked, so then I ordered him some. Instead of heading back out with him, I ended up going to sleep early after taking a shower and watching some of the new Jay Leno Show. It had been a long day, and the next day would be even longer.
On Monday morning I woke up and headed topside for breakfast, even though I’d meant to have breakfast delivered to me. After getting some food, I met up with the family and we went out to Freeport, my first time on foreign soil. The first little area we were in after getting off of the ship was nothing very different than any seaside town trying to sell junk. I hadn’t wanted to head to the straw market that day, but we never made plans for anything else, so we took a cab over to the straw market area at Lacaya Beach. Mom & Dad went to the shopping district, but Kelly and I had other plans, and headed over to the Our Lacaya resort.
The beach here was absolutely beautiful, the most beautiful place I’ve ever been in my life. There were several different beach options, but we went to the left to a far less busy section of the beach that had 2 breakers on each side of a nice stretch of beach front property, with condos and parts of the resort coming right out to the long, but not very wide beach.
After laying our stuff down on the sand we headed out into the water. It was clear, warm, calm, and beautiful. I stayed in the ocean for quite some time just floating around and enjoying the beautiful surroundings. I could have stayed here for the rest of the trip and would have been happy.
After a couple hours of lying out at the beach we decided to go over to the shopping district and look for Mom & Dad. I wanted to pick up a few things and I wanted to get the camera so that I could take some pictures of the beach. My brother wasn’t feeling his best so he went to sit at a bar at the resort while I went in search of Mom & Dad. I walked thru the straw market and didn’t see them. I walked back over to the beach to tell Kelly that we may just have to meet them at 3:00 for our ride back, but I decided to head over one more time, after looking at the beaches. Finally I ran in to them, told them where Kelly was, got the camera, went and took some pictures at the beach, told Kelly to meet Mom & Dad at the pickup spot for the taxi, then went and ran in to mom and got some souvenirs for workmates and my supervisor.
As we were waiting on the Taxi, a strange man in costume came up and began telling us how he was ‘touched’ and this and that, and then wanted us to take a picture with him. He was an odd character to say the least.
We rode back to the port and headed back onto the boat, then made our way to our rooms to get ready for dinner. It was Captain’s night, so we had to dress up. I had Lobster tail and Jumbo Shrimp for dinner, but didn’t stick around to hear all that the maitre’d had to say. I had planned to go back to the room and watch HEROES’ season premier, but there was some confusion, as the ship was on Colorado time, and I missed the 8:00pm premier time, that was really 9:00, and since I didn’t realize the show was coming on at 8:00, I was too late to catch it all.
So instead we roamed around the ship. Mom and dad joined us for a while on the Serenity Deck. I had my iPhone and was listening to music while watching the other boats in the distance. Mom & Dad decided to go to the show on the boat, and Kelly and I walked around and visited some of the bars, such as the piano bar (with the terrible name “Touch of Class”, and even more terrible black/white/red mannequin hand décor), but didn’t stay long. We did sit in the Michelangelo Lounge and watched some crazy old woman try to pick up young men. I had my WVU shirt on, so quite a few people stopped me. We ended the night at Kaleidoscope, the dance club.
The ship was traveling at full speed as there was a medical emergency on board, so the boat was really rocking. I made my way back to the room around 3am and we were already in Nassau, 3 hours early. It didn’t take long for me to fall asleep that nite.
The next morning Mom & Dad had made plans for an excursion riding in a semi-submarine, but I’d made plans to visit Atlantis. Kelly stayed on the boat all day, but I made my way down to the excursion desk, paid for my trip, and headed out to the pickup area. Nassau felt more out of the country for me, and riding over to Paradise Island I was able to see more of the ‘real’ Bahamas.
Once we arrived we received our instructions on meeting back and then met our tour guide. I’d really have liked to do the Aquaventure, but since our dinner was early I decided to only do the Discover Atlantis excursion. We toured both of the hotel’s aquariums which were very nice. After the tour we could go anywhere on the property that our wrist bands allowed. I wanted to go down to the beach but wasn’t sure if that was an area I was able to go to, so I walked back and explored the casino and shopping areas. I did get to head over to the Hammerhead shark lagoon and explored outside on the resort’s grounds as well. Atlantis is just a beautiful resort, and I’d really like to go back and stay for a few days in the future.
I hopped on the transport back to the docks. On the way back I really felt like I was in a different country because the areas we went thru were fare more foreign. Once we arrived I set out to explore the shopping district near the port. I didn’t want to wander too far, but many of the shops I was interested in were either close, just as expensive as the shops back home, or I didn’t find anything I liked. I did hit up the Bacardi store, but passed on buying alcohol. It was getting closed to dinner and I had to get back and get ready.
After dinner Kelly and I went around to the different bars, back to the room on occasion, and even briefly watched a show. We tried to watch the Stand Up Comic, but it was at the end of his set and we forgot to go back for the later one. I did make my way at one point to the Sea View restaurant for some sushi and a sandwich.
The next day I got up early and headed out for food. It was past breakfast, so I had lunch instead, and then I headed up to the water park deck to try out the slides. I ended up doing each slide at least twice and splashed around the water features before going around the boat. It was a hot day, but it was beautiful and playing in the water felt good. I had room service again that day, and for dinner I had steak again, but this time with 2 appetizers. The deep fried mozzarella was very good. Kelly and I dipped out of dinner before they sang to us again and went walking around the boat. I did some shopping as Kelly lay in the room. We made our way out at different times and did a lot of different things, but I still ended up going to bed early.
The next morning we woke up and got our stuff ready before heading to the Lido deck for breakfast. It took a while before we were able to disembark, but the process was smooth and easy. We dropped Kelly off at the airport and headed north. I slept most of the way back to North Carolina, but we did end up eating at an iHop in Georgia.
Being that it was my first cruise, I didn’t know what to expect. Now that I do, I’d love to go again, but I’d definitely like to go to another destination. I had a really fun time, at a lot, and actually got out of the country. For $226, I’d say the price was worth every penny for what I got.

Hurricane Dorian struck the northern Bahamas on Sunday as a catastrophic Category 5 storm, its 185 mph winds ripping off roofs and tearing down power lines as hundreds hunkered in schools, churches and other shelters.
The second-strongest Atlantic hurricane since 1950, Dorian hit land in Elbow Cay in the Abaco Islands after authorities made last-minute pleas for those in low-lying areas to evacuate. But officials recognized there were not many structures on higher ground on the largely flat archipelago southeast of Florida.
Millions from Florida to the Carolinas kept a wary eye on the slow-moving Dorian amid indications it would veer sharply northeastward after passing the Bahamas and track up the U.S. Southeast seaboard. But authorities warned that even if its core did not make U.S. landfall and stayed offshore, the potent storm would likely hammer U.S. coastal areas with powerful winds and heavy surf.
The National Hurricane Center in Miami said Dorian’s maximum sustained winds at landfall were 185 mph (295 kph), up from 175 mph (281 kph). It is moving west at 7 mph (11 kph). “Catastrophic conditions” are occurring in The Abaco Islands and expected across Grand Bahama later in the day, the center said.
Dorian was second only to Hurricane Allen in 1980, with its 190 mph winds.

“It’s going to be really, really bad for the Bahamas,” Colorado State University hurricane researcher Phil Klotzbach said.
In the northern stretches of the Bahamas archipelago, hotels closed, residents boarded up homes and officials hired boats to move people from low-lying areas to bigger islands as Dorian approached.
Bahamas Prime Minister Hubert Minnis warned that any “who do not evacuate are placing themselves in extreme danger and can expect a catastrophic consequence.”
Kwasi Thompson, minister of state for Grand Bahama island, urged residents to “please, please heed the warning. We have no more time available.”
Still, dozens of people were ignoring evacuation orders, officials said, and they were warned that they were placing their lives in danger.

“The end could be fatal,” said Samuel Butler, assistant police commissioner. “We ask you, we beg you, we plead with you to get to a place of safety.”
Silbert Mills, owner of the Bahamas Christian Network, said trees and power lines were already down in The Abaco Islands and that some roads were impassable.
“The winds are howling like we’ve never, ever experienced before,” said Mills, 59, who plans to ride out the hurricane with his family in the concrete home he built 41 years ago in central Abaco.
Among those refusing to leave were 32 people in Sweetings Cay, and a group that sought safety in Old Bahama Bay resort, which officials said was not safe.
Butler said officials were closing certain roads with heavy equipment and warned that those on the other side would be stranded until after Dorian has passed. The government has opened 14 shelters across the Bahamas.

“We cannot stress the amount of devastation and catastrophic impact that Hurricane Dorian is expected to bring,” said Shavonne Moxey-Bonamy, the Bahamas chief meteorologist.
On Saturday, small skiffs shuttled between outlying fishing communities and McLean’s Town, a settlement of a few dozen homes at the eastern end of Grand Bahama island, about 150 miles (240 kilometers) from Florida’s Atlantic coast. Most came from Sweetings Cay, a fishing town of a few hundred people about 5 feet (1.5 meters) above sea level.
“We’re not taking no chances,” said Margaret Bassett, a ferry boat driver for the Deep Water Cay resort. “They said evacuate, you have to evacuate.”
But Jack Pittard, a 76-year-old American who has been traveling to the Bahamas for 40 years, said he has decided to ride out the storm in The Abaco Islands. He said it’s the first hurricane he will experience in his life.
“There’s fear,” he said by phone Sunday as the eyewall approached. “I’m worried about destruction of property, but I don’t believe there’s going to be loss of lives here.”

Pittard said he battened up his house and is spending the storm in a nearby duplex behind a group of cottages that a friend owns. He noted the ocean is quite deep near where he’s staying, and there’s a cay that provides protection, so he doesn’t expect significant storm surge.
“I’m not afraid of dying here,” said Pittard, who lives in Lexington, Kentucky.
Meanwhile, Klotzbach, the hurricane researcher, warned of Dorian’s catastrophic strength: “Abaco is going to get wiped.”
Over two or three days, the slow-moving hurricane could dump as much as 4 feet (1 meter) of rain, unleash devastating winds and whip up a dangerous storm surge, said private meteorologist Ryan Maue, seconding some of the most reliable computer models.
Government spokesman Kevin Harris said Dorian was expected to affect 73,000 residents and 21,000 homes. Authorities closed airports for The Abaco Islands, Grand Bahama and Bimini, but Lynden Pindling International Airport in the capital of Nassau remained open.

Jeffrey Allen, who lives in Freeport on Grand Bahama, said he had learned after several storms that damage predictions sometimes don’t materialize, but he still takes precautions.
“It’s almost as if you wait with anticipation, hoping that it’s never as bad as they say it will be. However, you prepare for the worst nonetheless,” he said.
The Bahamas archipelago is frequently hit by hurricanes. Construction codes require homes to have metal reinforcements for roof beams to withstand winds into the upper limits of a Category 4 hurricane, and compliance is generally tight for residents who can afford it. Risks are higher in poorer communities, which typically have wooden homes and are generally in lower-lying areas.
The slow-crawling storm was predicted to take until Monday afternoon to pass over the Bahamas, and then turn sharply and skirt up the U.S. coast, staying just off Florida and Georgia on Tuesday and Wednesday and then buffeting South Carolina and North Carolina on Thursday.
The National Hurricane Center Sunday morning issued a hurricane watch for Florida’s East Coast from Deerfield Beach north to the Volusia and Brevard county line. The same area was also put under a storm surge watch. Lake Okeechobee was put under a tropical storm watch.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis warned residents along the state’s densely populated Atlantic coast: “We’re not out of the woods yet.”
He noted some forecast models still bring Dorian close to or even onto the Florida peninsula.
“That could produce life-threatening storm surge and hurricane force winds,” DeSantis said. “That cone of uncertainty still includes a lot of areas on the east coast of Florida and even into central and north Florida, so we are staying prepared and remaining vigilant.”
Palm Beach County announced a mandatory evacuation for the eastern half of the county beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday after the morning forecast put the area in a tropical storm warning. The evacuation includes mobile homes, substandard housing, low-lying areas prone to flooding and homes along the Intracoastal Waterway and on barrier islands.
For Florida, it’s all going to come down to a matter of a handful of miles between relative safety and potential devastation. On Tuesday and Wednesday, Dorian is forecast to be 40 to 50 miles off the Florida with hurricane-force wind speeds extending about 35 miles to the west.

National Hurricane Center Director Ken Graham is telling residents not to bet on safety just because the specific forecast track has the storm just a bit offshore. Don’t focus on the track, he said, but the larger cone of possibility that includes landfall.
Making matters more touch-and-go is that with every new forecast, “we keep nudging (Dorian’s track) a little bit to the left” which is closer to the Florida coast, Graham said.
Dorian is a powerful but small hurricane with hurricane force winds Sunday only extending 29 miles to the west, but they are expecting to grow a bit. That makes forecasting the storm’s path—either just off the coast or skirting it—delicate and difficult.
South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster declared a state of emergency, mobilizing state resources to prepare for potential storm effects. President Donald Trump already declared a state of emergency and was briefed about what he called “a very, very powerful hurricane.”
“We don’t know where it’s going to hit but we have an idea, probably a little bit different than the original course,” Trump said. “But it can change its course again and it can go back more toward Florida.”
The hurricane upended some Labor Day holiday weekend plans in the U.S.: Major airlines allowed travelers to change reservations without fees, big cruise lines rerouted their ships and Cumberland Island National Seashore off Georgia closed to visitors. Disney World and Orlando’s other resorts held off announcing any closings.

This is the distinction inside five star hotels.
I arrived at the Dubai International Airport on the 17th of March. The Atlantis gives helicopter rides for the Dubai city tour. This gigantic project was modelled just after the Atlantis Paradise Island in Nassau, in the Bahamas, also owned by Sol Kerzner, a South African businessman with a penchant for big projects like the Sun City Resort in his native country, typically referred to as the Las Vegas of Africa.
A two star hotel is not designed for the total expertise.
Lately Dubai has gone up close to the best of the list of most preferred destinations for tourists in the planet. Right after days out exploring the wonders of Dubai city, unwind at the Conrad Spa. Why is the room price of agoda diverse from the main website of the hotel? Sofitel Dubai The Palm Resort & Spa promises a luxury beach location like no other. It is no wonder that jobs at hotels in Dubai represent a large share of the worldwide hotel sector. We at supply very trusted services for hotel booking for India. Located at the finish of the Dubai Marina, it is well placed for receiving out to explore the continuously developing city. Delight in unparalleled luxury in the Signature Royal Bridge Suite at Atlantis with the added advantage of Imperial Club rewards. More than 1 million without power in Puerto Rico
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — As of 10 a.m., more than 1 million people in Puerto Rico are without power — nearly 70 percent of customers of Puerto Rico’s Electric Power Authority. Puerto Rican Gov. Ricardo Rossello said Thursday that crews are investigating and until they know the extent of the damage, “it will be difficult to estimate how long the power outage will last.”
Rossello added that ports on the island are still closed, and it’s unclear when commercial flights will resume.
Schools and government offices are scheduled to reopen on Monday.

Airports in the Bahamas are shutting down with the approach of Hurricane Irma.
The government says the international airport in Nassau will close late Thursday and it urges people who plan to leave the island chain east of Florida to check with airlines for space.
Grand Bahama’s airport and the less-populated island throughout the chain will close by noon Friday.
Hurricane Irma has cut a path of devastation across the northern Caribbean, leaving at least 10 dead and thousands homeless. The storm could also make a catastrophic strike on Florida.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center predicted Irma would remain at Category 4 or 5 for the next day or two as it passes just to the north of the Dominican Republic and Haiti on Thursday, nears the Turks & Caicos and parts of the Bahamas by Thursday night and skirts Cuba on Friday night into Saturday.
It will then likely head north toward Florida, where people were rushing to board up homes, fill cars with gasoline and find a route to safety.

President Donald Trump is urging people to “be careful, be safe” during Hurricane Irma.
In a tweet Thursday morning, Trump remarked that Irma “is raging but we have great teams of talented and brave people already in place and ready to help.”

The Dutch Ministry of Defense says two military aircraft will fly to the Caribbean island of Curacao on Thursday afternoon loaded with relief supplies and troops to help authorities on former Dutch colony St. Maarten recover from the devastation of Hurricane Irma.
The ministry says the troops being sent to the region “can also be used to restore public order.”
Interior Minister Ronald Plasterk said earlier Thursday that he could not confirm news reports of looting in Saint Maarten, where a curfew is in force in the aftermath of Wednesday’s storm.
The ministry says a KDC-10 and a C-130 Hercules are to fly to Curacao from a military air base in the southern Dutch city of Eindhoven. The Hercules will then be used to ferry supplies to St. Maarten because it should be able to land at the badly damaged Princess Juliana Airport
The planes will carry enough food and water to supply the 40,000-strong population for five days.

Foreign Office Minister Alan Duncan says the Caribbean island took the full force of the category 5 hurricane.
He told lawmakers on Thursday that the British Virgin islands have also suffered “severe damage.” On another British territory, Monsterrat, the damage is “not as severe as first thought.”
Duncan said the hurricane is expected to hit another British overseas territory, Turks and Caicos, later Thursday.
Britain has dispatched a Royal Navy ship carrying marines and army engineers to the affected islands.
Duncan says there are “unconfirmed reports of a number of fatalities” as a result of the hurricane.

The Dutch prime minister says Category 5 Hurricane Irma was a storm of “epic proportions” when it slammed into the former Dutch colony of Saint Maarten in the Caribbean and is appealing to Dutch citizens to donate to a relief fund set up by the Red Cross.
Speaking Thursday after a meeting of the government’s crisis committee, Prime Minister Mark Rutte said there are no reports yet of casualties on the Dutch side of the island. Rutte says the damage is huge, particularly on Saint Maarten, with “widescale destruction of infrastructure, houses and businesses.”
He says, “there is no power, no gasoline, no running water. Houses are under water, cars are floating through the streets, inhabitants are sitting in the dark, in ruined houses and are cut off from the outside world.”
The Dutch military is readying two aircraft to fly to the region to distribute vital aid to the shattered territory, which is home to some 40,000 people. However the airport on the Dutch side of the island is badly damaged.

The island’s airport also was hit hard, with what appeared to be sand washed up to parts of the main terminal and the building’s roof extensively damaged. No aircraft were visible on the tarmac. The airport is famous around the world because its runway ends very close to a beach, where tourists can stand and watch landing aircraft skim low overhead.
Streets were largely deserted and littered with debris. At a port area, shipping containers were strewn like children’s building blocks. Elsewhere, yachts were shown jumbled together in a small harbor, some overturned or dumped, upside down, onto the shore.

Where the wind comes sweeping down the planes... and more?
It’s Summer Time! And for some of you that means VACATION. Vacations can be fun and exciting. Weather you are looking forward to kicking your feet up at the beach or hitting the tee with your buddies. Here are some weather facts to think about when prepping for your next Fly-in vacation.
FIVE Surprising things about bad weather and flying: 1. Summer Storms vs. Winter Weather. The FAA says summer storms are worse than winter storms.
2. Thunderstorms / Weather Flying delays. Sure, there are some thunderstorms in the wintertime, but they are far more frequent and more intense in the spring and summer. In fact, pilots are trained not to go anywhere near them, if they can help it. Veteran Alaskan Airlines Capt. Sean Cassidy says, “Depending on the nature of the thunderstorm activity, you might fly as much as 20 miles or more around a thunderstorm.” You never know how long a weather detour will take and it is best to not fly in stormy or bad weather.
3. Summer can be Frosty Iced aircraft wings can be an issue even in the summer - not on the ground, of course, but depending on how high you fly and the amount of time you are up in the air and the amount of precipitation in the air with you.
4. Ground Fires and Weather. The Flight Safety Foundation website states that wildfires, if they’re big enough and conditions are just right, can create their own “weather”. This can result in updrafts and ultimately, extreme turbulence. Bottom Line: A bright sunny day is no guarantee for a smooth flight.
5. Mother Nature’s Surprise Tornados and Hurricanes.
At Greenville Air, we care about your Flight Safety so we have done some Research to show you where the weather may become a little bumpy around the globe.
Bahamas: There’s a much greater chance of rain during the summer and fall.
The curse of Bahamian weather hurricane season, lasts (officially) from June 1 to November 30. But there is no cause for panic. More tropical cyclones pound the U.S. mainland than The Bahamas.
The average July Weather Nassau Bahamas In Nassau, the month of July is characterized by essentially constant daily high temperatures, with daily highs around 89°F throughout the month, rarely exceeding 92°F or dropping below 86°F. Daily low temperatures are around 79°F, rarely falling below 75°F or exceeding 82°F. For reference, on August 5, the hottest day of the year, temperatures in Nassau typically range from 79°F to 90°F, while on January 29, the coldest day of the year, they range from 66°F to 77°F.
Hawaii July’s weather in Hawaii can be described as very summer-like with lots of sunshine and warm temperatures. Daytime high temperature average in 80s F. Nighttime temperatures only dip into the low to mid 70s F. July’s rainfall is typically one of the lowest for the year.
Hawaii lies in the central Pacific, where about four or five tropical cyclones appear each year, although as many as fifteen have occurred, such
as in the 2015 season; rarely do these storms actually affect Hawaii.
The 2017 hurricane season in the Central pacific kicks off in June and forecasters are predicting an “above average” year, with five to eight named possible storms. The season comes on the heels of two busy hurricane seasons over the last two years.
Jamaica Four Weather Tips
1. January through March have the lowest rainfall.
2. September and October are the cheapest, rainiest and least popular months to visit.
3. Temperatures in July and August are often uncomfortably hot.
4. March and April have the best combination of low rainfall and warm temperatures.
Like most Caribbean islands, Jamaica has a hurricane season that runs from June through November every year. Average rainfall during the hurricane season shows a modest increase during June and a drop in July.
Although it Rockets back up in August it seems to be the third most popular month to visit this rich in culture island destination.
Montego Bay, Jamaica July is the hottest month of the year in Jamaica, and the beaches and swimming pools of Montego Bay are packed during this time. Humidity and heat are both high during the peak summer months, so if you don’t deal well with either then perhaps this isn’t the best time for you to visit!
Although it may be hard to resist with July being the month of music, with the Reggae Sumfest celebrating the life and music of iconic musician and activist Bob Marley, as well as reggae music as a whole. The festival begins with a beach party on the Friday night and basically continues with musical fun throughout the weekend, with plenty of rum thrown in for good measure.
Just remember if you are flying into a beach destination you will need to check the weather and be prepared for the heat and humidity! Some other alterative vacation destinations further inland.
North Carolina Outer Banks where the Wright Brothers first took flight in 1903. Imagine landing just steps from the Wright Brothers Monument.
Florida Keys Key West, Florida (EYW), is a favorite spot for pilots in the United States, allowing you to get a taste of the Caribbean without the pesky Customs procedures! The Atlantic hurricane season formally begins June 1 and ends November 30. Historically, the chances of hurricane activity are greater between August 15 and October 1. During the past 100 years, the historical average frequency of a hurricane impacting somewhere in the state of Florida is once every two years.
Colorado Steamboat Springs (KSBS) Steamboat Springs is an internationally known winter ski resort destination, so pack your coat and head out to Colorado for some awesome skiing in the winter, or visit during the summer for hiking around the mountains.
Alabama Dauphin Island (4R9) Landing at the Dauphin Island Airport (4R9) is as close as you can get to landing on an aircraft carrier. In 1519, the Spanish explorer Alonso Alvarez de Pineda was the first documented European to visit the island.
California Lake Tahoe (KTVL), Lake Tahoe is the second deepest lake in the United States and the tenth deepest in the world, with a maximum depth measured at 1,645 feet. It’s also incredibly clear with a 70-foot visibility. There’s world-class skiing in the winter, and plenty to do in and around the lake during the summer.
New Orleans Lake Front (KNEW), Louisiana Originally the major commercial airport in the New Orleans area, the Lake Front Airport relinquished its role in 1946 when commercial airline service began from the nearby Louis Armstrong International Airport. If you want to visit the French Quarter during Mardis Gras, this is the airport for you.
Alaska Skagway (KSGY) Enjoy a Gold Rush style meal in historic downtown Skagway, Alaska. Surrounded by Yukon Territory and snow-capped mountains, you’re sure to get gold fever. With over 1,000 new miners flooding the area each week in the late 1800s, by June 1898, with a population between 8,000 and 10,000, Skagway was the largest city in Alaska. Today, it has around 900 permanent residents.
Virginia Tangier Island (KTGI) Tangier Island is a historic and cultural destination for pilots located in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay. The majority of the original settlers were from South West England, and the tiny island community has attracted the attention of linguists because its people speak a unique English Restoration-era dialect of American English. Most of Tangier Island is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Arizona Grand Canyon West (1G4) The Grand Canyon West Airport and the surrounding land is owned by the Hualapai tribe of Native Americans.
Texas Gillespie County (T82) The Gillespie County Airport is home to the Hangar Hotel, a 50-room hotel dedicated to providing visitors with an experience much more than just a room. It’s built to look and feel like a hangar from the WWII era, and you can park your plane right out front if you’re visiting!
Arkansas Gaston’s White River Resort (3MO) has their very own grass airstrip open to all guests. Come in to visit for breakfast, lunch or dinner, or stay overnight.
Tennessee Dyersburg Army Air Base-Veterans Museum, Halls, TN The Veterans’ Museum was founded on the site of The Dyersburg Army Air Base in 1997. The base had been a training facility during WWII for B-17 pilots. While the Museum honors our veterans from that era with displays, photographs, and history of the base, we are proud to honor all of our veterans with displays from conflict wars starting with WWI through present day.
Always check the weather, your radar, and stick to your flight plan when flying anywhere.
Another tool is https://www.wunderground.com/hurricane an aviation hurricane weather reporter.
Last month’s issue of the BEACON JUNE 2017 also has a great resource. Remember article on page 11? “Prevention of Loss of Control Accidents. Fly Safe FAA Recommended Aircraft Safety Do’s.” “Fly safe, and enjoy your vacation!” from the Greenville Air company and the BEACON.
