After a dream run of nearly a year, Akasa Air, a brand of SNV Private Ltd. appears to have hit a bit of turbulence. The fledgling budget carrier had been rapidly expanding its operations and network over the past year, which saw it becoming the fastest to get to a fleet of 20 aircraft, a prerequisite to mount international flights. While the fleet expansion has been impressive, Akasa Air, which was backed by the late billionaire investor Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, appears to be finding it hard to hold on to enough pilots to optimally operate its aircraft, at least for the time being.
Hit by a spate of resignations from pilots over the past few weeks, the airline recently sued some pilots for quitting abruptly without serving their regulation notice periods of six months. The carrier claimed that their sudden exit had led to numerous flight cancellations, resulting in operational losses and damage to its reputation. According to sources, over 40 pilots quit the airline in recent weeks and legal proceedings have been initiated against some of them. This has severely affected the image of Akasa air in the airline industry.

MGH Group CEO Anis Ahmed: Insufficient Air Freight Capacity Limits Chinese Goods Exports to India
Anis Ahmed, Founder and Group CEO of MGH Group, a prominent freight and logistics firm based in Singapore, has underscored the substantial air cargo potential between India and China. Despite a strong demand from Chinese exporters for the Indian market, the trade dynamics remain skewed. Indian airlines frequently find themselves returning to China with empty cargo holds, as Indian exports to China are minimal compared to Chinese exports to India.
“You can’t change much because Indian exporters aren’t selling to Chinese, but the Chinese love Indians—they sell everything to India,” Ahmed remarked in an interview. MGH Group, which acts as a general sales agent for ocean carriers and airlines and provides comprehensive logistics support, leverages its activities in China to manage air freight shipments into India. The company has formed a strategic alliance with IndiGo, India’s largest airline, to facilitate these shipments.
Ahmed explained that there is a lack of sufficient space for air freight to support online businesses due to the imbalanced trade flow. “India doesn’t send much to China, so when the aircraft return, they are empty,” he said.
Chinese freight carriers such as SF Express and YTO Cargo dominate the freight flight operations from China to India. IndiGo, India’s largest carrier, has recently initiated freighter services between Kolkata and Ezhou, Hubei Province, China. MGH Group utilizes both IndiGo and Chinese freighter companies for cargo transport from China to India.
“IndiGo is our gold standard. We aim to integrate with their network wherever possible. We are establishing service links for agriculture and industry that require faster transport,” Ahmed noted.
The bilateral relationship between India and China has been strained since the deadly skirmishes along the Line of Actual Control in May 2020. India’s Minister for External Affairs, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, has emphasized that normalization of relations with China is contingent upon peace and stability at the border.
Ahmed, who is based in Singapore but originally from Bangladesh, highlighted the need for significant players in the air freight industry to emerge in India to bolster its position in the global supply chain network. He stressed that protecting and developing the Indian supply chain is crucial for the success of the “Made in India” initiative. “I told the honorable secretary of aviation, ‘Sir, you have to protect the Indian supply chain.’ ‘Made in India’ can only be successful if its supply chain is also manufactured in India,” Ahmed said.
He advocated for a gestation period for Indian carriers to achieve profitability, invest in their fleets, and compete fairly with foreign carriers, which currently dominate the air cargo sector.
Ahmed is optimistic about the future of Indian airlines like Air India, Akasa Air, and SpiceJet. “Yes, we work with SpiceJet. We were among the first to take over and manage their cargo business since 2015. We cover all of India and are their global go-to market for all their destinations,” he said.
MGH Group aims to significantly expand its aviation segment, which currently represents 22% of its sales. “We want to double that. We’re just scratching the surface of this billion-dollar industry today. Over the next three to five years, we anticipate an eight- to nine-fold growth in this sector,” Ahmed projected.
The group is betting on India’s expanding airport infrastructure to enhance air freight operations. “We align our goals with the Indian government’s vision,” Ahmed concluded. “When the government announced the UDAN scheme for airport development, we adopted it as a blueprint for the future of Indian aviation, for both passenger and cargo transport.”

Airports Clearing Backlog After Global IT Chaos, Centre Shares An Update
Airports across India are still grappling with issues from yesterday's massive Microsoft outage. Although the situation has improved significantly since Friday's chaotic scenes, passengers continue to face challenges, particularly at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI).
At Delhi's IGI Airport's Terminal 3, passengers experienced some improvement today, but a few problems persist. Yesterday, the automatic self-drop baggage and check-in machines were non-functional, causing long queues outside Gate No. 5 in Terminal 3. While many passengers can print out their boarding passes today, international travellers still face issues with boarding pass generation, with some being issued manual passes inside the airport.
The Digi Yatra machines at Gates 1-3, which facilitate seamless entry, remain non-operational, necessitating manual entries. Display boards showing wait times, flight schedules, and other crucial information, which were down yesterday, are now functional. However, the overall system has not yet fully recovered, as confirmed by airport officials.
Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport fared better than its counterparts in Delhi and Bengaluru. Although long queues were reported, operations are running more smoothly today. Nonetheless, two flights, one to Varanasi and one to Kochi, were cancelled this morning, and several international flights were rescheduled. This is an improvement from yesterday when nine domestic flights, all operated by IndiGo, were cancelled. IndiGo has warned of potential cancellations today but expressed optimism that yesterday's disruption will not be repeated as the Microsoft outage was not reported today.
The outage, attributed to an update by global cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike, disrupted Microsoft's Windows systems worldwide, affecting financial institutions, airlines, hospitals, and media channels. In India, this caused airline check-in systems to crash, leading to delays and the cancellation of dozens of flights. IndiGo alone cancelled around 200 flights, with hundreds more delayed as manual check-in procedures significantly slowed the process.
The Indian financial sector experienced minor disruptions at about ten banks and non-banking financial companies (NBFCs), which have largely been resolved, according to the Reserve Bank of India. However, the outage's impact on airports from Chennai to Delhi was severe, with passengers facing long queues due to unavailable web check-in services and manual ticketing processes.
Airlines such as IndiGo, Akasa Air, Vistara, Air India, SpiceJet, and Air India Express acknowledged the issues via social media. Passengers received handwritten boarding passes, and the manual ticketing and luggage check-in process extended to 30-40 minutes per person, leading to frustration and overcrowded lounges.
Besides Delhi and Mumbai, high-density airports like Bengaluru and Chennai saw the most significant impacts. At Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport, airlines such as IndiGo, Akasa, SpiceJet, and Air India Express initiated manual check-ins to ensure minimal disruption. The technical glitch has been fully resolved at Bengaluru airport, and operations have returned to normal. However, there is slight congestion due to the residual impact of yesterday's operational delays. Due to the backlog, it will take a few hours for the crowds to clear.
Hyderabad's Rajiv Gandhi International Airport experienced cancellations of 23 flights, including IndiGo flights to Visakhapatnam, Tirupati, Ahmedabad, and Bengaluru.

Akasa Air take off likely in late May or early June: CEO Vinay Dube
Seeking to further democratise air travel with dependable and affordable services, airline Akasa Air is aiming to start flights in late May or early June after getting its first Boeing 737 MAX aircraft in April.
Bullish on the long term growth potential of the country's civil aviation sector, ace investor Rakesh Jhunjhunwala-backed carrier is looking to have 18 planes in its fleet by the end of March 2023.
Despite COVID clouds continuing to cast a shadow on the airlines, Akasa Air CEO Vinay Dube is more than optimistic as he asserted that "if you look at the long term future of commercial aviation in India, it is as exciting as anywhere in the world".
Interacting with PTI on a video call, Dube said the Indian aviation pie is growing and the idea of Akasa Air is to look through what we are currently facing. "This is temporary. This too shall pass".

Akasa Air is an upcoming ultra-low-cost Indian airline co-founded by billionaire and stocks trader Rakesh Jhunjhunwala and former Jet Airways CEO Vinay Dube.
In October 2021, Akasa Air received a 'no objection certificate' (NOC) from the Ministry of Civil Aviation. The NOC will be held by SNV Aviation, the holding company for the proposed airline.The airline is now in the process of receiving the Air Operator Permit (AoP) certificate after aircraft acquisition and other required procedures.
Akasa Air, backed by Indian billionaire Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, will begin flight operations in the next six months after receiving an AOC. The airline plans to operate approximately 70 planes in the next four years.
It is planning to launch flights in the summer of 2022 with an endeavour to be the nation’s most dependable, affordable and greenest airline. The airline is in talks with US aerospace giant Boeing for buying up to a hundred 737 Max aircraft. Besides discussions with Boeing for planes, Akasa Air is also in talks with Airbus for potential orders from the Airbus A320 fleet.
Rakesh Jhunjhunwal partnered with IndiGo's Aditya Ghosh and Vinay Dube to launch the carrier to tap into demand for domestic air travel.Praveen Iyer has been appointed chief commercial officer. Former Jet Airways executives Belson Coutinho, Adam Voss, Ajit Baghchandani will head marketing, engineering, inflight services respectively. Ankur Goel, former head of IndiGo’s treasury and investor relations, will head Akasa Air as the Chief Financial Officer.
While Jhunjhunwala has invested Rs 247.50 crore in the airline, another big name of Dalal street, Madhav Bhatkuly, founder of investment fund New Horizon, has also invested around Rs 6 crore in the company.

HYDERABAD: Pet relocation platforms have been witnessing a growing demand from students and young professionals moving abroad. CE speaks to companies to learn more about how they’re reuniting pets with their parents in a foreign land
For a doting pet parent, having to part ways with their beloved creatures is a painful process, especially when they cross borders for higher studies or greener pastures. While many accept this to be a way of life, not many know that they can actually relocate their pets to wherever they move. A lack of knowledge about this has resulted in several pets either being abandoned, given away, put up for sale or adoption and other miserable conditions that leave some traumatised too, in some cases. Thankfully, pet relocation platforms have been witnessing high demand from students and young professionals moving abroad.
Recently, Akansha, a student in the USA, wanted to relocate her pet (a Boxer) to the states. However, Boxers are snub-nosed dogs who are at high risk while travelling via air; not many airlines guarantee to maintain the oxygen level in their cargo load. Due to this reason, no airline agreed to relocate her baby dog posing a huge challenge for Akansha. That’s when she reached out to Carry My Pet. After four months of trying with different airlines, Carry My Pet finally got Lufthansa Airlines to agree to this transportation. The company took care of all the paperwork, ensured that the dog was safe and comfortable in his crate, and sent him off to the USA to reunite with Akansha.
According to a study, since the pandemic, approximately 10% of the younger generation has taken in a new pet, which means that millions of people are now part of the rapidly expanding pet ownership sector. “While this generation is doing well in responsibly raising a pet, one major obstacle millennials face is if and when they relocate for studies or work, they are often left with no choice but to leave their fur babies behind. Having done many challenging pet relocations for their clients, Aamir Islam, co-founder of Carry My Pet said “We were hopeful to reunite Akansha with her dog and after a long wait and constant trying, we were successful in doing so. Such unusual relocations constantly push us to do better, which lights a fire in our hearts and makes us believe in our purpose.”
Likewise, many pet relocation companies in India like Airpets, Furry Flyers, HappyToRelocate, etc. cater to the similar needs of the clients. Hyderabad’s Rebecca Vedavathy needed her 3-year-old Persian cat to be brought from Bengaluru to Hyderabad as she was shifting base to Hyderabad for work. “Companies like these had experts who answered all my queries patiently and helped me through the process and the paperwork in the quickest manner possible,” she tells CE.
“Close to 10% of yearly relocation queries come from Hyderabad. Last year, we received close to 500+ queries out of which over 350 were for domestic relocation,” Aamir informs.Vinayak Prabhu, directer and co-founder of Furry Flyers shares how companies like his come in to ensure pets reach their parents. “For domestic travel, one can opt from the many pet-friendly taxis in the country. Not many are aware that their pets can be relocated by trains. Railways legally allow you to carry your pet along with you through first-class travel. For those who cannot afford to pay for first class tickets can always have their pet travel in the luggage coach, although that is not advisable,” he says, adding that currently, Air India and Akasa Air allow you to fly with your pets without hassle. “For Air India, if your pet is lighter than 5kg, you can carry them below your seats with proper care. Otherwise, you can also pay for them as part of extra baggage and they will be flown in through the cargo,” says he.
He mentions that while a pet can be relocated to any country in the world, each country has a different set of rules, some easy, and some difficult. “Agencies like ours assist you in navigating through the many rules and documentation. For countries like the UK and Hong Kong, the process could take up to 3-4 months, while it could take not longer than 2 weeks. India has one of the most difficult set of regulations to import pets, including rules that the parents should have to be returning to the country for good (not vacation) and must have stayed abroad for at least two years,” he says, adding that the process of this includes the pet being microchipped (injected between their shoulder blades) for life, vaccination, clearing tests, etc.
