Different Reality

Red. It’s everywhere… with little black flames etched into flags. She is… entirely confused. This is not New York in the slightest. Wanda gazes at the people walking the streets—who happen to be looking at her like she’s got three heads—and frowns.

Where exactly is she?

The maroon jacket she wears does happen to fit in with the colors that the civilians are wearing, but her heels don’t.

It doesn’t help that no one is stopping to speak to her or ask her any questions, so she takes it upon herself to walk into a nearby tea shop, looking around a bit apprehensively.

Wanda sees a taller man with shaggy black hair, and she smiles to herself. He’s sitting with an older gray haired man, and they seem to be playing some type of game.

“Um… excuse me?” she asks, her Sokovian accent leaking out much more than she would have liked. “Would one of you please tell me where I am? I believe I’m a bit lost…”

The words don’t sit right with Zuko. At all. He straightens up and pushes the hood of his jacket off his head. “Azula,” he says slowly, “what did you do?”

There was a random burst of cold rain that should have brought her to her senses. But maybe it was the surprise of it all - no one had seen the dark clouds in the dark sky of the new moon - or maybe it was that whatever spell she had woven was cast so wide, it caught her up as well.

Zuko took her hand, forgetting that their cloaks had hoods, and they ran screaming like the other dancers from the open air pavilion. They ended up alone in an alcove and Zuko leaned against the door frame, his chest heaving from exertion. 

His face was turned to look back at the pavilion but he glanced over at her.

“What is it?” He asked, his voice breathy.

Katara shook her head, unable to begin.

“You’re soaked.” He said.

Before Katara could reply, he grabbed her and held her close.

“I wouldn’t want you to catch cold.” Zuko said.

Far from cold, Katara felt how warm the Fire Lord was.

The first time she had seen him being warm, it had shocked her. This time, it nearly struck her down.

“You’re trembling.” Zuko said.

“I’m afraid.” Katara replied softly.

“Of what?”

“Of what comes next.” 

“What do you mean? I won’t hurt you.”

“Oh Fire Lord, I think I might want you to.”

Zuko looked down at her, his brow raised with frank inquiry.

“I didn’t take you for that kind of woman.” He said smoothly and Katara blushed furiously. 

“I don’t mean literally.” Katara snapped.

Zuko smiled, sliding his hand along her jaw and she leaned into his touch as he cradled her cheek.

“So if you don’t fear pain, what’s scaring you so badly?” He asked.

“I.” Katara gasped as Zuko held her tightly, turning their bodies away as shouting revelers ran back into the street. A group passed, but all Katara could hear was Zuko’s heartbeat. 

“Sweet lovers!” A drunken man called out.

“Better not let her father find you.” Another added and the group erupted into laughter. 

“Come on.” Zuko said as he stepped away from her. “Let’s head back.”

Zuko held her hand as they moved through the streets. The wet stone was slick under their shoes and Katara stumbled a few times in the dark. Each time, Zuko grabbed her, holding her steady until she got her legs properly under her. 

“Not so light on your feet now.” He quipped and Katara brought up a splash of dirty street water onto his cloak. 

“I gave you a good enough show didn’t I?” She remarked.

“Sure, but I’d like to know what you can do in the dark.” Zuko shot back.

Her throat tightened and Katara was acutely aware of his hand holding hers. Of how nice and warm he was.

She rather liked this side of the Fire Lord.

Wanda was certainly not expecting to feel Zuko’s strong hand caressing up her thigh, and she looks up at him with a blush on her face. She’s been in the Fire Nation for a while, even having been staying in the Palace for her own safety—after countless attempts of telling Zuko she can take care of herself—and she clears her throat. She always gets nervous around him, but in the best way.

“H-Hey,” she squeaks, gazing at his hand again before her eyes meet his. Her own are dark with desire, and she doesn’t try to hide it. With how long she’s been here, she’s certainly developed feelings… and she always notices how ridiculously hot he is.

“How um… how are you doing?” she asks breathlessly, but she moves closer to him. She wants him to touch her even more, and that’s clear.

Hello, this is Ana (formerly with the username @analynasi)! In honor of free day for this year’s Zutara week, I decided to create a little Zutara tag game. My answers are down below, and underneath the cut there is a blank template to copy and paste from if you would like to do this too! The answers can be however long or short as you’d like them to be <3

1. Favorite Zutara trope/headcanon: I have many favorite tropes, but one of them is when Toph picks up on the romantic tension between Zuko and Katara and acts like a gremlin child by making fun of them about it, or actively trying to get them together, or both.

2. Uncommon opinion about zk: I don’t like the idea of Zuko or Katara being given a betrothal necklace by the other when they get married to each other. The betrothal necklace always seemed like a Northern Water Tribe tradition, not a Southern Water Tribe tradition. Plus, I don’t like the idea of anything replacing Katara’s mother’s necklace on her neck, and I don’t think Katara would like the idea of it either.

3. Favorite Zutara fic: I have many favorite Zutara fics, but Once Around the Sun by eleventy7 will always hold a special place in my heart, as not only the first zk fic I ever read, but also the first fic I ever read overall.

4. A song that you think fits zk: buzz cut by lovelytheband and MisterWives always reminds me of Zutara in a modern AU!

5. When do you think Zuko and Katara should get together romantically, if at all? I like the idea of them getting together when they’re around 18-ish and 16-ish respectively (just because a few of my favorite zk fics have them getting together romantically at about that age), but it takes a very well-written fic to pull that off in a well-paced and mature manner. I also don’t mind them getting together when they’re in their 20s.

6. Do you have any steambaby headcanons? I think that they would have three children. I like to imagine a girl, a boy, and a girl (in that birth order).

7. Which atla character do you think would be the biggest Zutara shipper? Iroh. He wouldn’t be pushy about it, but I think he would be very keen to how good for each other Zuko and Katara are.

8. A ship that you think is similar to Zutara (can be from atla fandom or a different fandom): Red Crackle, the ship between Carmen Sandiego and Graham Calloway from Carmen Sandiego (2019)! Someday I’ll make a post about all their similarities.

9. If you had to pick a different ship name for zk besides "Zutara," what would it be? If I were joking around, I’d probably say "Kazu" or something like that. But if I were being serious, I like the idea of a ship name based off of their elemental combination. Like “Thundersnow" (the result of a combination of snow with lightning and thunder), for instance.

10. What is your favorite piece of work that you created for Zutara (art, fics, edits, gifsets, headcanons post, etc. plug whatever you’d like to here!)? “Would it be weird if I...adjusted my jogging schedule so I conveniently happen to be out running when he is?” Katara asked.

Suki looked at her, clearly impressed. “Wow. That’s one way to get a man.”

Katara blushed. “I mean…”

Suki looked around. “Where is this man? I need to see him and assess his hotness. I’m gonna go knock on his door.”

“Girl, you better not!” Katara grabbed her arm. “If I have any chance of getting a date with this man—”

“—or getting in his bed—”

“You cannot show up at his door like a psycho!”

“Fine,” Suki pouted. She dropped her chin onto her fist. “But I need to see this guy at some point, okay? Do me a favor and find out what his last name is so I can stalk him on his socials.”

“Spirits, I hope you two never meet. You’re a nut,” Katara remarked as she shook her head.

Hi! I'm new to this fandom and so happy to see a blog dedicated to our lovely ship Zutara! Is there any specific reason why Zutara month is held on April?

Thank you for your kind words. It's an honor to host such a lovely event and share the content of a bunch of lovely people.

As per your question:

Zutara month was initially held in December but after Tumblr's "nsfw ban" there was a lot of confusion on what was and wasn't allowed as content which made it hard to navigate an event. Therefore, the mods decided to take a break until things settled.

After the break, Adamant added me (Ari) as a mod and held the first come back Zutara month in February 2020 during the leap year. and then another ZK month event was planned by @nevaborne during the first months of quarantine. I thought that was a great idea and asked @nevaborne if I could also reblog content for it on this blog, which she agreed. Coincidentally, the extra month made up for the break in content we had when the mods decided to take a break.

Before 2021 came around, I became the only mod and added @airiustide to the team. We decided to take an official vote for when Zutara month should be held and April was the overwhelming Majority.

We assumed April was chosen because it was far enough away from any other event, such as Zutara week and because the original month of December was too close to finals for students and May was the same issue.

Cut to now, and @airiustide has decided to take a step back from hosting fandom events, and I have added the amazing and lovely @poeticmoonspirit to the team.

This is a lot longer of an answer than I am sure you were expecting, but here is the timeline for anyone interested.

I know that there is a popular hedkanon where Katara stays to live in the Fire Nation when she becomes an ambassador and then Zuko's wife, but how about Zuko not becoming a Fire Lord, but moving to live with Katara at the South Pole while Iroh rules on the throne?

Hi, anon!

While I do love Zuko becoming the Fire Lord, realistically I don't think it made a whole lot of sense. He was literally sixteen - still a child - at the end of ATLA and has been away from the Fire Nation for three years, which isn't objectively a lot of time but it is at that stage of development. I find it really hard to buy that Iroh, who clearly loves Zuko a whole lot, would voluntarily heap all of that responsibility and danger onto him (and then just up and leave him to it to move to Ba Sing Se but screw the comics, they're trash).

I do think a more sensible ending would have been for Iroh to become the Fire Lord, with either Zuko as his heir apparent or the monarchy officially being abolished upon Iroh's death.

In that case, I one-hundred percent believe that Zuko would go to the Southern Water Tribe to be with Katara. Depending on how soon he makes the move after the war, I think it would take time for him to find his place and to get the acceptance the tribe outside of the family, but once Zuko is settled I think he would absolutely love it in the south - the strong familial connections, the ancestral spirituality, the anonymity out there for him, the lack of pressure, how his bending can be used for lifesaving things as well as fighting like starting fires to keep igloos warm, cooking food quicker, melting holes for ice fishing, etc.

Again, this idea has been really well-executed by @airiustide in their fic, i choose us, so if you're in need of a SWT!ZK fix, then that's a go-to!
