Historical Vulcan "XM655" leaves the track during high-speed taxi
British bomber almost collided with vehicles on a road that passes next to the head of the runway.
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 09/16/2022 - 22:26in Incidents, Military
The historic Avro Vulcan B.2 bomber, registration XM655, suffered an incident today while taxiing at Wellesbourne Mountford Airport in central England.
For an undeterminate reason, the aircraft crossed the head of the runway and stopped very close to a road. Currently, there is no information about the exact damage it suffered, but it was probably not so serious. The accident, however, forced the cancellation of the event scheduled for the day after tomorrow at the airport.
The XM655 is no longer airable, but it can still taxi on its own, and its owners - who also own the airport - occasionally organize shows where Vulcan presents itself to the public on the move. Today's ill-fated taxi was part of the preparations for this year's last presentation, which is also to celebrate the famous "Black Buck" operations during the Falklands War.
Mike Pollitt, who was in control of the aircraft at the time of the incident, explained how he needed to take measures to ensure that the aircraft did not hit the busy road that passes near the head of runway "18".
The former RAF driver said: "Unfortunately, one of the instruments failed, which was critical for the race and, while he was distracted by this, I left the track.
"You are always aware of the traffic on that road and the buses that get off."
Mr. Pollitt, who is now the president of the preservation society responsible for the aircraft, added: "The airfield informed the Accident Investigation Division, so if they will be interested, I can't say much more.
"The good news is that no one is injured. No one inside or outside the aircraft, and the aircraft seems to be intact."
Currently, there are only three Vulcans in the United Kingdom that are kept in taxiing conditions - along with the XM655, these are the XL426 in London Southend and the XH558 in Doncaster Sheffield (which will have to stop soon and it is not clear what will happen). The XH558 "Spirit of Great Britain" was the last bomber of its kind capable of flying. Unfortunately, his flight career was irrevocably canceled - for safety reasons - by taking the last flight in 2015.
youtube
The renovation of the HX558 ended in 2007 and has been the star of all the air shows in which it has appeared since then. Initially, it seemed that the last season of XH558 shows would be 2013, but thanks to the financial support of people of good will, it was possible for a cost of £400,000 to complete the most urgent modification by installing aluminum reinforcement panels on the attack edges of the wings. From the beginning, it was assumed that this would be enough to extend Vulcan's life by two years (hence the project was called "Operation 2015"), but everyone hoped that during this time it would be possible to find a cure for other pressing problems and add at least one year.
Unfortunately, the three companies whose experts supervise the technical condition of the XH558 agreed that this was no longer possible and refused to provide more support and, without this, the British Civil Aviation Authority would not allow Vulcan to continue flying. Of course, the situation has not improved with the lack of spare parts (especially for engines) and the decrease in the number of people who have experience working with machines of this type (retirees have been working on the machine for some time).
youtube
While the XH558 was built relatively early in the Vulcan production cycle (approximately one third), the XM655 was one of the last machines released from the production line. After that, only two copies (XM656 and XM656) were built at the Woodford factory. Both fuselages no longer exist, making the XM655 the youngest Vulcan to date and the only one equipped with Bristol Olympus 301 engines.
The XM655 began service with the Royal Air Force at RAF Cottesmore in 1964. Then he was assigned to RAF Waddington. After the RAF withdrew its operational status (it had a flight time of only 5744 hours), the XM655 ended up in the hands of businessman Roy Jacobsen, who initially wanted to maintain its airworthiness, but the investment exceeded its financial capacity and the plane began to deteriorate. The owners of the Wellesbourne Mountford airport took over the machine to cover their parking costs for several years in 1993. Shortly after, the XM655 was the victim of vandals that devastated the cabin.
youtube
The machine has been presented to the public on the ground since February 1997. Some time later, he also became a kind of coach for the teams and mechanics who worked at XH558. Until the COVID-19 pandemic ended these events, the XM655 taxied in front of spectators usually once or twice a year. The shows resumed last September.

Old Habits Die Hard | Part Four: Down The Stairs And To Your Left
SYNOPSIS | PART ONE: DAYS BEFORE | PART TWO: JUST BE GOOD TO ME | PART THREE: RECOGNIZE THE BUTTERFLIES
Peace!
Warnings: Lightweight mentions of sexual situations, language
A few things! Old Habits Die Hard is now on WATTPAD! If you’re more of a person that uses Wattpad to follow fanfiction, you can now follow on that platform. It’s all up to date over there. Secondly, I’m dropping off the internet grid (new year fasting, you know how it is...) from the 6th until the 26th so there will be no update until I come back (hopefully, it’ll be finished by then lol) Lastly, I love you all and I’ll see you on the flipside!
DOWN THE STAIRS AND TO YOUR LEFT
The latter parts of the day’s sunlight stream into Ariel’s bedroom and bounce off of the water-stained Word Up! posters of Mindless Behavior left hanging onto her bedroom walls. You understand why Aunt Jerri wouldn’t want to remove them; your Dad kept your B2K posters up in your room well after you left for college too. It made him feel like you never left home.
Stuffed animals mark their spot on top of the dresser and in front of the vanity mirror that’s reflecting an image of you braiding Ariel’s voluminous hair into two large french braids. It was getting too hot for her hair to live wild and free.
“I can’t believe my mom is actually hosting a party here tonight. This is not like her at all.”
“Ariel, I can’t either… she’s wildin’ tonight.” So was Yahya for that matter. His insistence on staying the night could only be explained by his desire to get a break from the hyper-emotional and high-stress world of being a civil rights attorney. He wanted to be as wild and free as Ariel’s hair that you’re trying to tame. You’re successful with Ariel. With Yahya, not so much.
Ariel grabs EcoStyler for her edges as you take a look at your phone. Dave has yet to message you again since you ignored his first message and you couldn’t help but feel a bit dismayed by his lack of a following gesture. For him to go out of his way to message you after a year of paying you no mind, you would think he wouldn’t take no for an answer. Your pride, at least, wanted a fight out of him.
“I hope this party is lowkey, Ari. I do.”
“It should be just family and maybe Mr. Jones’ family down the street.”
“I don’t think I know the Joneses like that at all.”
“One of them, this boy Pardi, is fine as shit…”
“Ari…”
You didn’t like Ari to curse even if she was old enough. “Leave those boys alone, homegirl.”
“Speaking of those Jones’ boys that low-ass Dave’s been asking about you.”
Your emotions spike. You don’t want to show your enthusiasm for Dave’s inquiries about you but you also feigned to know how much he much he misses you and if he craved you or wanted to see you.
“Oh word?” Your poker face is ice cold. “I haven’t talked to him in a minute. He’s okay?”
“Looking real dusted, yeah. He kept asking me about you too. Got on my nerves.”
You sit on the edge of Ariel’s bed, rubbing the corners of her mattress with hands that twitch at the thought of running into Dave before your trip is over. You try your best to shrug off Ariel’s notice of Dave’s attention towards you but curiosity is starting to get the best of you. “What did you tell him?”
“Nothing. Felt like it was better to show him.”
You quickly realize how Dave found you. You wanted to make sure that Ariel wouldn’t pull such a move.
“Ariel … how did you do that?”
“Showed him a picture of you and your man.”
“Girl, no… that wasn’t your place to do that.”
Ariel shoots a puzzled look toward you and you shoot it right down. “I get it but Sis, that wasn’t the move…”
“It ain’t like Dave hit you up, right … fuck, I’m sorry.”
Ariel received -- and believed -- the farcical cliff notes of the story of how you and Dave ended. You told her that you two decided that distance and travel would be too much to continue the relationship. You didn’t want to tell her the real story: that your texts to Dave went unanswered and that when you called him, it went straight to voicemail. You even hopped on I-95 unannounced to drive up to Philly but once you were minutes away from the tolls, you bailed. All of that you couldn’t tell Ariel.
“I doubt he shows his face, Y/N. It ain’t like he knows that you’re here.”
“You sure you ain’t tell him that, Ariel? Since you showing my life off…” Your misdirected irritation toward Ariel is rearing its ugly head. You quickly reel yourself in once you see Ariel start slamming the drawers shut on her vanity. “I’m sorry, cousin. You didn’t deserve that. I know you meant well by what you…”
The faint ring of the doorbell stops your apology in its tracks. You pass a frightened look at Ariel who quickly passes it back to you. You don’t know who that could be at the door. You’re hoping -- but yet praying that it’s not-- Dave.
You run into the bathroom to straighten yourself up before parading down the steps to maybe see your impending doom for the first time in a year. You adjust your sundress to show the right amount of plump and cleavage and shift your dress to show the most thigh you could. You check your Nikes for scuffs of asphalt on the toe box. You inhale so much air into your lungs that they may explode. You exhale once you walk down the steps to see it’s just Yahya coming into the house with his hands beyond full.
Crisis averted.
“Oh you went to the good state store, Yahya. You ain’t holding anything cheap.” Aunt Jerri grabs the two bottles of Woodford Reserve from up under Yahya’s right arm, ignoring the weight of the rest of the goodies that are almost causing him to topple over. The bags of ice are set to fall until you quicken your pace down the steps to catch those bags before they hit the floor. To Yahya, you were on time.
Dave doesn’t want to be late and miss Aunt Jerri’s afterparty, his favorite black t-shirt sticking to his body like glue as the sweat pools toward the middle of his back. He cranks up his air conditioning unit to the maximum. He’s trying to not lose his cool.
Dave’s been thinking about what to say to you all day. A part of him needs to corner you and pour his heart out but he’s too much of thug for that. A part of him desires to play the corner with hopes of you making the first move. Ultimately, all of him hopes that your fiance isn’t there to fight any and all of his fantasies. He knows that he must be on his best behavior: Aunt Jerri and his Mom are close friends. There will be no corner-like-behavior up in that house.
As Dave adjusts the laces on his Nikes, his brother Pardi softly raps on Dave’s door to let him know that the family is ready to head over to Jerri’s house. Dave heaves what feels like gallons of air from his chest and proceeds to walk down the hallway towards the steps. Pardi suddenly stops Dave in his tracks, causing him to almost slip on the top step of the staircase. “Yo, nigga… what are you doing?” Pardi could smell Dave’s tense demeanor since Trace told him that you were back in town. He remembered last summer and what fits those two weeks drove Dave into: insanity.
Like Ariel, Pardi didn’t receive an honest answer about what happened between you and Dave. Dave told Pardi that you were just “a fuck” and that you just made yourself available when Dave needed you. Pardi looked squarely through Dave’s misogynistic postering bullshit to know that Dave was all the way gone when it came to you. You were the woman that paused passionate games of NBA2K when you called his phone. You were the woman who Dave would let sleep in his bed long after he left for work. He wanted you there when he finally got home. You were the woman that had Dave on a James Harden-like tear on the basketball court, showing off just for you.
Pardi called Dave a “bitch” when your phone calls and texts went unanswered and when he, Dave and their boys took a trip to party out in DC and Dave didn’t reach out to you.
Pardi can see the scared in Dave as they stand at the top of the steps. “Yo, you good?”
“Fuck you asking me if I’m good for?”
“Shorty from last summer prolly there, that’s why.”
“Nigga. I’m not even thinking about her.”
Pardi shrugs off Dave with a laugh and walks down the steps. “Yeah, aight. You buggin’...”
-----
“Oh, you trippin’! LeBron is better than Jordan!” Uncle Ro’s passionate basketball debate with Yahya is causing his rotund body to almost careen off of the couch and onto the floor. Although you hoped that the party would be small, nothing associated with your Aunt Jerri is that. She’s beloved on the block and the amount of people filtering into her home is showing you how much. Some pre-wedding donations slipped into your hand during the course of the evening, making tonight’s impending torture somehow worth it.
For a brief moment, you weren’t thinking about Dave. You were overwhelmed by the embracing of Yahya by your family -- blood and neighborhood. You almost cried when Aunt Jerri spoke about your Dad during her impromptu toast to you and Yahya’s engagement. “My brother is smiling, I know that. And that fool wouldn’t crack a smile for a damn baby. Except you. He loved you.” Those were the words you wanted to hear after a day of beating yourself up for a decision you made last summer to make some neighborhood dude named Dave a priority for two weeks all the while he seemingly made you an option.
Your current priority has been watching you filter in and out of the kitchen, grabbing drinks for your Uncles and some of the OG queens from the neighborhood. The brown and white liquor are making love inside of his body, thoughts escalating inside of his mind that would make your Reverend Uncle Ro want to perform an exorcism on him. He couldn’t wait to take you out of that sundress when you both got home. But why did it have to wait for DC?
As Yahya peels his now overheating body off the plastic-covered couch, the front door opens allowing a needed breeze to hit the living room.
But suddenly you get hot.
Although it’s been 365 days, you and Dave catch eyes quicker than an Olympic runner. It mirrors the way that you both first looked at each other last summer, a moment so intense that Aunt Jerri whispered “oh shit!” to herself as if she was watching the drama unfold on The Young & The Restless. She could tell that you and Dave were two magnets that desperately needed attachment. That’s why she told you to “have fun with that.” As he stands at the door, your eyes fixate upon his body. You forgot how sexy he was. He mimics your move, staring down your body like he would be quizzed on it. You were so beautiful. Last year’s feelings and emotions quickly replicate themselves in this moment causing Aunt Jerri to say “oh shit!”. This time most of the room heard her.
Aunt Jerri received the honest story about you and Dave’s fallout. She forgot about all that in the midst of trying to set a party off inside of her house.
Yahya sees your face and knows that something isn’t right. As he attempts to save you, Dave and his family make their way throughout the living room to greet everyone. They became the river that Yahya couldn’t cross.
“Y/N, can you grab that Grey Goose in the basement?” Trace orders, breaking you out of your Dave-induced spell. You happily oblige, needing to get away from the love of your life and the lust of your last summer standing just feet apart from his each other. Yahya finds a way around the crowd to follow you downstairs.
You find yourself leaning over the oak-colored bar while yelling internally at your chest to calm down. You fail to hear Yahya shuffle down the steps and come up to you.
“Yo, what the fuck!” You jump at the precise moment that Yahya attempts to wrap his arms around your waist. He’s never seen you this wound up or scared. It’s uncharted territory for the both of you.
“Y/N, it’s me … it’s me. Wow.”
You never went in for a hug so fast once you realize that it’s Yahya and not Dave. “Babe, I’m sorry. I’m just … I’m just really over-”
“Overwhelmed? I would be too if half the damn city just walked into the house. You know them?”
You know one of them and in ways that you would never tell Yahya. You shrug off Yahya’s question with a kiss which intensifies with every mounting second. Yahya’s lips fail to break from yours as he walks you backward, finding your backside up against the bar. His right hand eagerly climbs inside the slit of your sundress, causing you to whimper and fall even more into his arms.
“Yahya, we can’t. Not down here…”
“Is so loud up there though, They won’t hear shit…”
“Shit? You’ve been around my peoples for too long. But no, not here. Not in my Auntie’s house.” You and Dave didn’t follow such protocol last summer.
Yahya obliges. “If this is your way of punishing me for making us stay up there, I don’t like it.” Yahya playfully bites on your neck before letting you go against the wishes of your body. He’s always there to protect you and you really want to show your appreciation. As he walks up the basement steps, he’s too distracted from trying to hide what’s going on inside of his jeans that he fails to notice someone trying to open the basement door.
“Oh, my bad. I didn’t see you there.” Dave’s too on a mission to get at you that he doesn’t care to become upset at Yahya almost smacking his face with a door. Or that Yahya, the man that now has your love and attention, is standing in front of his face.
“You good. They told me to grab a bottle down there.”
“Yeah, man. The bar is down the steps and to your left. My girl is down there. She can show you where everything is...”

Whiskey Straight, Vamp Chaser
As promised, Part The Second, where the girls and I meet for happy hour and a vamp hunt. What could possibly go wrong?
*******************************************************************************************
"OK, everyone back?"
We had switched from computers to phones, opening the Discord voice channel there in preparation for the transfer.
A chorus of assent from my phone.
"OK, last check. Mags, machete, gun, ammo, and dead man's blood?"
"CHECK!"
"Cori, Med kits, gun and ammo, machete?"
"Got it…"
"Ella, daggers and machete?"
"Yes! Let's do this!"
I grinned at her enthusiasm, used it to calm my ever-increasing nerves.
I checked for my own machete in my backpack. Pulled it from the sheath and verified the sharpness.
Time to stop stalling.
Either do it, or call it off.
Last chance.
"Cee?" Mags' voice, concerned.
I sheathed the machete, placed it back in my backpack and shouldered it.
"OK, let's do this."
I heard the rustle over the channel as backpacks were pulled on to shoulders, scratching noises as cell phones were placed in the shoulder strap pockets. I placed my own there as well, then faced the doorway.
"FOCUS. HARD. Close your eyes and envision the pictures in your mind, smell the dirt and the trees. Feel the ground under your feet and the air on your skin. KNOW YOU ARE THERE, and walk forward."
I followed my own directions, and felt the cool air of my spare room become the hot dusty, air of Manning, Colorado. The carpet became gravel and dirt, my footsteps kicking up dust as I completed the transition. Opening my eyes, I looked around.
No one was here. I began to panic, pulling my phone out of the strap pocket to see if they were still on Discord…
… silence.
Of course. The damned phones didn’t work over here.
SHIT SHIT SHIT… did I just lose all my friends to the Ether or something?
Then the air in front of me began to shimmer… and then another, and another. Through the shimmers, I saw three figures emerge.
Dark brown hair trailing to copper at the ends, ruddy highlights shining in the late afternoon sun, dark brown eyes glinting merrily behind the rims of her glasses. Mags.
Light blonde hair glinting gold, soft hazel eyes. Cori.
Finally, dark brown trending to black hair and bright blue eyes, the tallest of us and the baby - Ella.
Shocked silence as we glanced around at each other.
A gaggle of gals in flannel and jeans, looking like a mini Supernatural convention.
Holy fuck. We'd done it.
Ella and Mags rushed together for hugs before bringing Cori in for a slow gentle hug.
Then they turned and rushed toward me…
"WHOA Whoa whoa hold it!" I shouted, waving my hands frantically at them. "No hugging me until we check the Grace situation!"
The girls stopped in their tracks. Ella approached, holding out a tentative hand.
"Here, I'll try…"
"Slowly…" I warned.
I reached my hand toward her’s, and she approached cautiously. As she neared, I could feel the static begin to build up between our outstretched hands.
At about an inch away, a small electric bolt leaped from my fingers to hers. She pulled her hand back with a hiss.
I sighed. "Ok, so no hugging me until it's time to send up the Bat Signal."
"Does that mean you can transfer the Grace?" Ella asked.
"Not sure," I shrugged. "But it's a good sign, I think. The Grace reacts to you like it does with everyone else here, so I'm hopeful."
We gathered up to disperse the dead man's blood and medical kits. Mags handed Cori two clips of the bloody bullets, keeping two for herself.
I wiped a sleeve over the sweat quickly beading on my forehead from the hot afternoon sun.
"C'mon, let's get outta this heat. First round's on me!"
*****************************************
Entering the bar through the back entrance, we grabbed the table in the back I had sat at when I was first here.
Even though I wasn't expecting trouble, I liked the vantage point.
On the way in, I looked for signs of the vampire attack I witnessed, or the vamp I had zapped into the outside wall, but there was nothing there.
It's almost as if I had imagined it… but I know I didn't.
I still had a sunburn-like discoloration where the vamp had grabbed my arms - Grace burn.
I left the flannel on to hide it.
The others were chatting animatedly as I got up to grab a round. Sauntering up to the bar, I waved and smiled at the bartender, who absently nodded in my direction as he finished preparing drinks for the waitress' order. Finishing, he approached to take my order.
"Howdy… can I get a Coke… oh, do you have ice tea?"
He nodded shortly.
I didn't notice.
I should have.
"Ok, awesome, I'll get one of those as well, and two shots of whiskey."
"What brand?" he demanded, voice flat.
"Uh… you got Johnny Walker Blue?"
"No."
"Ok, how about Woodford Reserve?"
He jerked around to the row of whiskey behind him, grabbing the Woodford and pouring the shots. Filled a glass with ice, followed by Coke from the soda dispenser and placed it next to the shots. Filled the last glass with ice, then tea from a jar on the counter, where it joined the others.
He looked at me with narrowed eyes as I handed over cash for the drinks, turning to the POS system and returning with change. I waved him toward the tip jar, where he deposited the change as if it were cursed.
I wondered who pissed in this guy's Wheaties.
Balanced the drinks in my hands and brought them back to the table.
"Ice Tea for Cori, Coke for the infant, and S H O T S for Mags and me!"
Cori giggled and Ella rolled her eyes.
Mags and I clinked our glasses and shot the smooth liquid down.
Oh, it burned SO GOOD.
I waved at the waitress to bring two more.
I also failed to notice her curt behavior as she delivered the shots, until Cori pointed it out.
"That gal is angling for a lousy tip…" she murmured as the waitress spun on a heel, taking the cash Mags handed her.
"Yeah, and I already tipped her with the change, so what the hell?" Mags huffed, annoyed.
I stopped with the shot half-way to my mouth, setting it back down as Mags glanced at me, puzzled.
"The bartender was the same way." I looked around at the other clientele frequenting the bar.
Not many, and all actively ignoring us.
I shrugged. Maybe the staff was just having a crappy day.
I picked up the shot, clinked again with Mags, and threw it back.
Lowering the glass, I caught movement out of the corner of my eye, near the little stage toward the front of the bar.
A guy was setting up karaoke gear.
NO. FUCKING. WAY.
"Omighad you guys that dude has karaoke gear!" I whispered excitedly to the girls, gesturing toward the small stage.
"We totally have to do this…"
"Oh no way…" Cori squeaked.
"Eeeek not me!" Ella gasped.
"Go get 'em, sis!" Mags chortled, shoving my chair away from the table with her foot, hands shooing me in the direction of the stage.
"FINE! I'll get you to join me yet…" I might have slurred a bit as I strutted to the stage.
I didn't notice every eye in the bar follow my progress as I approached the karaoke guy and told him my song selection.
Karaoke Guy smiled and nodded, handing me a mic.
I had enough presence of mind to take it gingerly from his hand as to not draw what would be a rather conspicuous spark.
Turned my back to the audience, mic held dramatically overhead.
The intro began to play… Bah bah badada bah bah…
Pulled the mic to my mouth.
"Let's go girls…" I sang, spinning around and strutting the stage.
“I'm going out tonight, I'm feelin' alright
Gonna let it all hang out
Want to make some noise, really raise my voice
Yeah, I want to scream and shout”
I could hear the girls whooping from the back.
The rest of the crowd, minimal as it was - dead silent, eyes fixed on me.
Ok, so I'm not Shania Twain, but I could carry a tune, as well as being a complete show-off.
They should have at least been booing if they hated it.
“No inhibitions, make no conditions
Get a little outta line
I ain't gonna act politically correct
I only want to have a good time”
I began to get a bad feeling about this.
Knowing a section with harmonies was coming, I gestured for a second mic from Karaoke Guy and headed back to our table, still singing.
"The best thing about being a woman
Is the prerogative to have a little fun and"
Handing the second mic to Mags who leaned across the table with it, encouraging Cori and Ella to sing along.
“Oh, oh, oh, go totally crazy, forget I'm a lady
Men's shirts, short skirts
Oh, oh, oh, really go wild yeah, doin' it in style
Oh, oh, oh, get in the action, feel the attraction
Color my hair, do what I dare
Oh, oh, oh, I want to be free yeah, to feel the way I feel
Man! I feel like a woman!”
My back turned to the rest of the bar, I mouthed as they sang "Follow me up to the stage… NOW!" with a small jerk of my head toward the stage.
Something about the look on my face encouraged them to get up and join me as I sauntered back to the stage, putting on the performance.
Watching out of the corner of my eye.
My unease growing.
“The girls need a break-tonight we're gonna take
The chance to get out on the town
We don't need romance, we only want to dance
We're gonna let our hair hang down
The best thing about being a woman
Is the prerogative to have a little fun and”
The four of us crowded on the stage and sang the chorus.
During the musical bridge, I spun around to turn my back to the audience again.
Turned the mic off, and Mags turned off theirs.
"Look at others," I whispered tersely. "Something is VERY WRONG HERE."
They looked. Cori turned white and Ella gulped.
The bridge was ending. "Keep going…" I urged, and turned the mic back on.
I nodded at Mags, who turned their mic back on in time to join in for the chorus again, as I whipped back around to face the silent faces in the bar.
Openly hostile now.
If not for the wave of fear racing up my spine, I would have been offended.
I sing PRETTY GOOD, DAMMIT.
This wasn't about the music, or Karaoke Guy wouldn't have even been booked.
This was something else. Something about me?
The girls sang along with the third chorus and at my encouragement, walked around the bar back to our table.
The eyes stayed on me.
I continued to sing, really putting on the act now and keeping their attention… watching out of the corner of my eye as Mags and the girls pulled their machetes from respective backpacks, tucking them into belts under flannel shirts.
The syringes of dead man’s blood into pockets.
Ella pulled mine out of my backpack and tucked it alongside hers, my syringes joining hers.
They all sauntered back to the stage, singing along as the song ended.
Ella sidled up close, passing my machete to me behind our backs, and stuffing the syringes into my back pocket.
Silence fell across the bar.
Karaoke Guy looked around at the silent faces in the bar and paled.
Probably thinking he was going to get ZERO TIPS tonight, judging by the hostility of the crowd.
"Soooo…," a dark voice rumbled from the back door of the bar. "You're back."
Our heads snapped simultaneously in the direction of that terrifying voice.
I recognized him instantly from my research into this case.
Luther.
Eight others at his back.
All flushed a bright red from exposure to the sun just now beginning to touch the horizon.
With the seven others in the bar, including the bartender and the waitress, that put the count of possible hostiles at fifteen.
TOO MANY.
Luther stalked the rest of the way into the bar, cronies at his heels.
"You didn't think I wouldn't recognize the stench of that angel Grace on you, after what you did to Johnny?"
Oh shit. I hadn't thought of the fact that *other* supernatural entities might be able to detect Cas' Grace.
"Um, who's Johnny?" I croaked, and winced. I was going for "tough and not giving a shit" and failed.
"My brother, who you shocked to death with that borrowed angel Grace of yours."
Mags leaned into my right ear. "What the hell is he talking about?"
"Later!" I squawked back. "Let's get out of this mess first…"
I turned back to Luther, still slowly approaching, the bar patrons getting to their feet to join them.
The bartender reaching under the bar and grabbing a shotgun.
"Dude, I wasn't trying to kill him. He grabbed me and that shock happened, I couldn't control it…"
Trying to distract Luther long enough to get the Bat Signal going.
"I don't CARE," Luther growled. "You're HUNTERS, here to wipe out my nest. AGAIN."
I spun around to face the others. "HANDS IN, NOW!" I barked, thrusting my hand out to them.
The girls grabbed my hand without hesitation.
I willed the Grace into them.
At the moment of contact, a blue-white spark raced down my arm and splintered in three directions, traveling up each of theirs. Rushing up their shoulders and necks, a bright flash of blue in each pair of eyes.
The shock sent our arms flying up, stumbling away from each other.
The flash temporarily blinded the vampires, giving us a moment to recover.
I spared a glance at Karaoke Guy.
He was backed as far into the corner as he could get, pale and trembling.
Good luck for us, he was human. Not a threat.
Bad luck for him.
"Ella, get him outta here!" I commanded, gesturing in his direction.
She nodded and rushed to him, grabbing him by the wrist and pulling him to the bar's front door.
He squeaked as a tiny blue spark popped between them when Ella grabbed him.
Well, that's good news. The Grace transferred, and it didn't throw people across the room when touched.
Although that would have been a nice trick to still have if the vamps manage to grab us.
I had no intention of letting them get the chance.
The bartender aimed the shotgun at Ella and Karaoke Guy as they raced for the front door.
Mags and Cori both reached behind their backs, pulling guns from belts, leveled them at the bartender and pulled the trigger.
Two bullet holes appeared in the bartender's forehead, the shotgun blasting pellets into the ceiling as he toppled backward.
Ella hit the door at a dead run, Karaoke Guy pulled behind her.
She was safe. I could breathe again.
So the Grace transfer appeared to have worked. Did Jack notice? Was he on his way with the Cavalry?
I prayed just to make sure.
"Jack, can you hear me? We're in a jam and need help RIGHT FUCKING NOW!"
Silence. My heart crawled up to my throat, choking me as the vampires approached.
The only thing keeping them at bay was Mags' and Cori's guns. They saw the bartender go down and knew something was up with those bullets.
Finally, a dim voice in the back of my head, whispering… "Celina… are you ok? I saw Cas's grace split up and I'm looking for Sam, Dean, and Cas right now… is it time for their surprise?" His voice grew stronger in my head, and more concerned. "You sound scared, why are you scared? I thought this was a fun surprise…"
"Jack, please, I'll explain later, just PLEASE get them here!!"
Refocusing on the current situation, I noticed the vamps had managed to flank us, blocking us from both exits.
Well, this is what we came here for.
Time to get to work.
I nudged Mags and nodded toward the bar. The bartender was out but not dead, and that needed to be corrected. She nodded and, jamming the gun back in her waistband, pulled out the machete and rushed the nearest vamp.
The blade made a graceful backhand arc, meeting the vamp's neck and lopping it cleanly off.
Cori and I whooped from the stage. Mags grinned and leaped up to the bar, swinging at another vamp reaching for her foot, taking off the top of his head at ear-level. Still effective. The vamp dropped as Mags disappeared behind the bar. The waitress, growling, leaped over the bar at her and quickly found her head flinging across the bar, hitting another vamp in the back and startling him long enough for Cori to take his head off from the stage.
Five feet of fury, I watched, amazed, as she darted from one table to the next, jumping on top of each to get at neck level, sending vamp heads flying.
Luther, moving with inhuman speed, jumped onto the stage, his hand closing around my throat as he shoved me against the wall. Stars swam in front of my eyes from both the hand closing off my airway and the jolt to the back of my head.
I had the presence of mind to not drop my machete, and thrust it at his midsection.
He pulled back enough to avoid the blade and threw me across the room.
Slamming into the far wall, I started to feel the world turn black.
NO.
Not gonna leave my friends to fight alone.
I shook my head and stood back up as Luther came for me, wiping the blood starting to trickle down my forehead into my right eye.
I raised the machete and blinked back the darkness trying to encroach on my vision.
Luther danced around me just out of range of my blade.
"So, where are your friends, huh? The Winchesters, right? Where's the angel that shot you up with that Grace?" he taunted, circling. He smiled a toothy grin at me and my breath hitched as the second set of teeth descended.
"Are they on the way? I hope they hurry so they can see me rip your throat out and drink you like a fountain."
"NOT GONNA HAPPEN, TWILIGHT!"
Ella's voice's coming from the back entrance of the bar.
I startled as a dagger flew past my ear and lodged itself in Luther's chest. He staggered back, reaching to pull the blade free.
It gave me enough time to reach into my back pocket and pull one out of the syringes of dead man's blood.
Pulling the needle cover off with my teeth, I yelled and rushed him, jamming the needle into his neck and pushed the plunger…
… the blade came free and he slashed me with it.
It sliced across my right shoulder from collarbone to upper arm, through the flannel and t-shirt underneath.
Luther beat me to the floor but not by much.
Blood darkened the green flannel and I clutched at it, falling to my knees.
"OHMIGOD CEE are you ok? OH SHIT OH SHIT…" I heard Ella squawk behind me.
"Yeah yeah I'm fine, I got him with dead man's blood WATCH YOUR BACK!" I shouted behind me, not turning to look, assuming at this point we were all pretty much surrounded.
I picked up my machete with my left hand as Luther began to stir, recovering way too quickly from the dead man's blood.
I raised up on my knees and lifted the blade above my head, bringing it down on his neck.
It lodged halfway through.
Well, it was with my weaker left hand.
I crawled to kneel over him, sitting on his chest as his hands fluttered at his sides, trying to grab at me.
Placed my left hand on the hilt of the machete, my bloody right hand on the other side near the tip of the blade, and pushed down with my entire body weight.
I felt the razor-sharp blade complete the slice through his spine.
He stilled, arms dropping with a thud to the floor.
I collapsed on top of him, vision fading to black.
******************************************
I barely felt the arms picking me up and carrying me to the back table, but when two bright flashes of light inundated the room, I raised my left hand to shield my eyes from the glare. When I lowered it, I blinked up into the wide, worried green eyes of Dean Winchester.
"HEY there you are!" he exclaimed, pressing gauze to my bleeding shoulder. Reaching for my left hand, he slapped it down over the gauze and pressed it down with his own. "Hold this on there while I go clean up your mess."
I winced more at his words than the pain caused by the heavy press of his hand over mine against the wound. The pressure eased as he let go and moved away, whipping his machete from his belt.
He stopped. Silence fell over the bar as a final thud echoed.
I sat up on the table and surveyed the room.
Not a single vampire stirred. Hard to move without a head.
Mags stood by the bar, covered in gore, her machete in one hand and her gun in the other.
Cori stood tall on a table, surrounded by beheaded vamps, the machete gripped in her white-knuckled hand.
She released her grip and the blade clattered to the floor.
Ella stood by the back door, Sam's arm around her shoulder as he examined a cut on her forearm, still clutching her machete.
He gently pried her fingers loose and hers followed Cori's to the ground.
Cas and Jack stood shoulder to shoulder, two smoldering vampires at their feet.
The Cavalry had arrived.
But not before our little team had wiped out 13 vampires.
By ourselves.
******************************************
"WHAT IN THE HELL WERE YOU THINKING!" Dean roared, glaring down at me, white-knuckled hands gripping the table edge.
I flinched back against the fury in his voice.
Well, I had it coming.
Sam leaned against the wall by the table, arms crossed and wearing a quiet frown. His silence in the face of Dean's outburst spoke volumes.
Ella sat next to me at the table. Cas held a glowing hand over the gash on her forearm, slashed with her own silver blade after throwing it at a female vampire. As with Luther, it had distracted the vamp long enough for Ella to separate her head from her shoulders, but not fast enough to prevent the vamp from pulling it free and slashing Ella with it on her way down.
Jack had offered to heal my shoulder, but I declined. Using his powers to bring Sam, Dean, and Cas here was minimal enough, but the power used by smiting the vampire would be a beacon for God - Chuck, whatever – if he happened to be looking for it. I refused to allow him to make himself more of a target by using even more power to heal me.
He now sat on the other side of me, eyes downcast.
Dean had already laid into him. Now it was my turn.
Cori and Mags had a few scrapes and bruises but had come through the fight relatively unscathed. They sat on the other side of Ella. Defiance and pride shown in their eyes in equal measure.
I took courage from them and raised my eyes to meet Dean's.
I stared down his fury.
"What was I thinking?" I said, softly at first but stronger as I gathered my courage. "I was thinking that we needed to PROVE to you that we could help you SAVE THIS WORLD."
Dean stepped back from the table, shock replacing the fury but only for an instant.
"What the HELL would lead you to believe that we need YOUR HELP?"
"Oh, I dunno… because it's GOD you’re facing, and EVERY SINGLE THING you've ever defeated being shoved back into your face again?" I shouted, rising to my feet, left hand still clutching bloody gauze to my injured shoulder. "You need all the help you can get!"
"Really?" Dean snorted sarcastically. "Help from YOU." His narrowed gaze swept the table, landing on each of my friends.
I was proud of them. They all met that gaze unflinching.
His eyes snapped back to mine. "You're not even hunters."
I barked a laugh at that. "LOOK AROUND YOU, DEAN," I snarled back, sweeping my head around the room to indicate the mass of dead bodies on the floor. "Thirteen dead vampires before you guys showed up. I would BLOODY WELL SAY that makes us hunters!"
His face flushed, eyes narrowed further. He stepped into my space, daring me to flinch back.
I stood my ground, eyes unwavering from his.
He leaned down to get right in my face.
"Why do you CARE?" the softness of his voice laid waste by the bitterness within. "None of this affects you. This world can BURN and you just have to step back through your little portal or mirror or whatever to your safe, happy, monster free world and be fine."
Shock poured over me like a wave of cold water at his words, just as quickly replaced by fury of my own.
It must have glowed like a flame from my eyes,
Hastily backing away from me as I stalked toward him.
Left hand dropping away from my right shoulder, the gauze held there falling to the ground as I raised a bloody palm to shove him against the wall, bracing my bent left arm over his chest to hold him there.
Sam pushed himself off the wall to intercept me and found five feet of Cori in front of him, hand outstretched to his chest and holding an inch away.
She barely came to his ribcage but held him still by the sheer force of her will.
Cas began to stand up as well but just as quickly had Mag's hand on his shoulder, lips set in a straight line and brown eyes almost black as she shook her head in a terse 'no'.
Ella preemptively grasped Jack's arm, but there was no need. He didn't move, staring at Dean with a look akin to shock.
"What did you just say to me?" I choked out past gritted teeth. "I KNOW I did not hear you accuse me of not CARING about you, or this world…" He pushed back and I shoved him against the wall again, the back of his head rapping against the wall.
"I KNOW you did NOT SAY that what happens to YOU, or SAM or CAS or JACK, DOES NOT AFFECT ME!" I wailed, furious tears beginning to fill my eyes. "You DO NOT get to say that to me!"
I shoved him one last time, then turned and walked away, tears falling freely now.
"You cannot tell me that you don't know how much you all mean to me… to US." My voice shook through my tears.
I spun back around to face him, and my heart lurched at the stricken look on his face.
"We may not be from here, Dean… but you have saved ALL our lives, time and again." I looked at Sam, hazel eyes wide and bright. Turned to Cas, meeting his warm blue gaze. I finally smiled at Jack, his hazel eyes backlit with shining gold.
"ALL of you have saved us, time and again." I stifled another sob. "I can't bear the thought of a universe without you!"
I was suddenly encircled by arms - Ella on one side, Mags on the other. Cori reached out to touch my shoulder softly, brushing at first then clasping.
I sobbed into their shoulders, and they cried back onto mine.
I felt Cori's hand fall from my shoulder, and turned to find her tear-streaked face pressed into Sam's chest, his arms gently encircling her.
Then Cas' hand on my shoulder, a warm glow infusing it as he healed the wound there.
Ella and Mags released me, and I turned to Cas to thank him.
As I began to speak, he pulled me in for a gentle hug and I lost all my words. My head pressed to his shoulder, an arm around my waist and the other behind my head, he brushed a soft kiss against the top of my head.
It might have just been my imagination, but I felt the rustle of wings around me, encircling me.
I wrapped my arms around him and squeezed with all my might. I felt the rumble of his chuckle against my chest, and a feeling of overwhelming joy rushed over me, suffusing me like warm sunlight.
"Alright, alright, that's enough..." Dean pulled me from Cas and spun me around. Hands on my shoulders squeezed, held me at arm's length.
My head drooped, eyes falling to the floor.
A hand under my chin raised my eyes back up to meet his.
"I need you to understand," his voice rough, eyes bright. "I need you SAFE." He released my chin, hand returning to my shoulder. His eyes turned to Mags and Ella, both wrapped in Sam's long arms, and then to Cori, her hands gently held in Jack's.
"I need ALL OF YOU to be SAFE."
It was my turn place a hand on his face, to bring his eyes back to mine.
"There's only one way to do that, Dean."
I can't believe the words that were about to come out of my mouth.
"We have to defeat God."
*********************************************
"I don't believe this… that son of a bitch was holding out on me!"
I stood up from behind the bar, brandishing an almost full bottle of Johnny Walker Blue Label.
"Hell yes! Bring that sweet stuff over here!" Dean exclaimed from the table in the back.
I placed four shot glasses on the tray, joining the glasses of water, soda, and iced tea. Sliding the tray off the counter with one hand, I grabbed the bottle of Blue Label with the other and headed back to the table, meandering around the strewn bodies of the beheaded vampires.
Approaching the table, I set the bottle down, then passing the tray under my arm, around and over my head before swooping down and sliding it onto the table, not spilling a drop.
"Show off" Dean smirked.
"You know it." I grinned, and took the chair between him and Cas.
Sam grabbed the bottle and poured shots for him, Mags, Dean, and me. Cas passed the ice tea to Cori, sodas to Ella and Jack, and the glass of water for himself.
Dean picked up his shot glass and considered it for a moment, before thrusting it into the center of the table.
"To a hunt well done."
Sam grinned and clinked his glass against Dean's. "Hear, hear."
Six glasses joined theirs, chiming merrily against each other.
"Cheers!" Ella squeaked, and we all laughed.
Leave it to the teenager to show us how it's done.
Four shot glasses full of some of the most expensive whiskey in the world were tossed back and subsequently pounded face down on the table, startling the other four.
"Ooooh shit, that was GOOD." I breathed.
"Hell yeah it was," Dean agreed, grabbing the bottle and pouring four more shots.
We clinked and shot that one as well.
"OK, down to business." Sam, ever the one to want to get down to business.
"And business is GOOD!" Dean chortled.
"Are you drunk ALREADY?" chirped Mags.
Sam rolled his eyes, and I shook my head.
"ANYWAY… " I started.
"What *I* don't understand," Dean interrupted, "is WHY you think Chuck - God, whatever - is a danger to YOUR world as well."
"Well, that's easy," Mags said.
"Yeah," Cori added, 'if Chuck can destroy *this* world, what's to stop him from destroying *ours* as well?"
"Hell, he might already be in the process of doing so, if you think about it, " I mused. "Climate change, asshats running the world, etcetera ad nauseam."
"And the way things are going, my generation is going to be left holding the bag." Ella groaned.
"So let US take care of Chuck!" Dean asserted. "Problem solved!"
I rubbed my temples. "Jesus, you're a broken record."
"How 'bout this," Sam proposed. "We need help, like a job pops up that we think you can handle, and we're busy, and Jody and Donna are busy… we'll call you over and you can help."
"It can be like my training, right Sam?" Jack offered.
"Sure, something like that," Sam agreed.
"So, as in, NEVER." groused Ella.
"RIGHT," Dean agreed and brandished a finger at her. "Especially for you, kiddo."
Ella rolled her eyes and took a long sip of her soda.
I caught the eyes of my friends.
A subtle shake of my head.
The message was clear - we're not going to win this argument.
Not yet.
"Well, I don't know about you guys, but I'm exhausted," I said, yawning and stretching. "It's late, and we should be getting back."
"Hey, the day is just beginning in South Africa," Mags countered, then stifled a yawn. "But I see your point. I'm beat as well."
I sighed, and pushed back my chair, rising. "OK, let's call it a day."
The others stood as well, and we began saying our goodbyes.
A kiss on the cheek for Jack, who blushed and made me promise, again, that we'll go to Disneyland soon.
A big moose hug from Sam, who crouched down just to pick me up and swing me around.
A repeat of the warm sunshine hug from Cas, that left me a little breathless.
Finally, Dean, who wrapped me up and rocked me back and forth.
"Was that a long enough angel hug for you, Cas Girl?" he teased.
"Shut up, Winchester," I laughed, my voice muffled by the flannel.
I pulled back a little.
"Hey, did you notice something?"
He looked puzzled. "What?"
"This." I pulled his head down and gave him a big sloppy kiss on the cheek.
"ACK!" he exclaimed. "Gross."
"Fine, calling my kisses gross." I pouted. "But that's not what I was talking about."
"What, then?"
I smiled into the curious green eyes. "No more shock value."
Eyes widened in surprise. "Wow, you're right. Was it because you split the Grace between you?"
I nodded. "I figure that's the case."
"Well, that's good, " he said, pulling me for a last hug. "I missed these."
"So did I, you big goober."
I reluctantly pulled back, turning to join the others, headed for the mirrors in the bathroom.
"Hey, you guys…" I called. "Uh, big surprise - the mirrors are no longer necessary."
The girls turned questioning eyes to me.
"Thanks to the gift from our resident angel," I smiled at Cas, who gave a tiny bow of his head, "not only will you not be sleeping it off for the next several days, but all you need now is a doorway."
"Well, that's cool!" Ella exclaimed.
I led the way to the back door of the bar.
"Same principles. Focus, fix your homes in your mind, know you're there. Close your eyes and walk through the doorway."
"Ok, I'll give it a try," Cori said, her voice unsure.
"THERE IS NO TRY, ONLY DO," I intoned.
Cori laughed. "Ok, ok, I'm gone. Bye!"
"Text the burner phones when you get there!" I reminded her.
She nodded, and with a final wave, closed her eyes, walked through the doorway - and disappeared into the shimmer.
A few moments later, the burner phones simultaneously buzzed.
Cori was home, safe and sound.
Next was Mags, then Ella, each confirming their arrival home.
Finally, my turn.
As tradition dictated, I turned back to Dean.
"I love you."
He grinned. "I know."
I turned and walked through the doorway, emerging into my spare room.

Cause and Effect of Air Pollution in Urban Area
by : Ellestya Exa
Air pollution became a massive problem which makes a consequence of industrial growth in the urban area across the country. In fact, Air pollution occurs when the amount of toxic gasses, particles, and other pollutants enters the atmosphere, which harms human beings, animals, and the environment. Many things contribute to the rapid increase of air pollution in an urban area. World Health Organization (WHO) stated that air pollution was a factor of the highest health disturbance risk in the world, it was assumed based on the data in 2018 around 7 million people were die every year due to air pollution (WHO, 2018). The number of motor vehicles, industrial waste, and lack of the green space can cause an enormous amount of air pollution. This pollution affects to qualities of air. The effects of air pollution include respiratory problems, global warming, and depletion of the ozone layers.
One of the air pollution causes is the increase in the number of vehicles in an urban area. Millions of vehicles are operated daily in the urban area, each one leaving its carbon footprint on the environment. Based on Badan Pusat Statistik (BPS), the number of vehicles in Indonesia reached 146, 858 million units in 2018 years (BPS, 2018). Vehicles on the road release gases and dangerous fumes by carelessly burning petroleum and other fossil fuels. The gas and smoke come from the results of incomplete burning fuels process in motor vehicles are the main source of air pollution. Transportation releases gases like carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and many other gases which harmful to the environment.
The amount of industrial waste and lack of green space can cause air pollution in the urban area. Manufacturing industries can be found at every corner of the earth. Limited area for factories in urban areas and the consequence of industrial growth encourages the emergence of actions to change the function of green areas in urban areas. Consequently, the lack of green space makes some pollutant gasses released into the air. As we know, the growth of plants can help reduce air pollution because carbon dioxide will be converted into oxygen in a process called photosynthesis. Furthermore, Industrialization has contributed air pollution in the urban city. Manufacturing industries release a large amount of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and organic compounds into the air.
Moreover, the contamination of pollutants into the air can occur either naturally or due to human activities. Natural causes of air pollution rarely occur and they are not widespread compared to human interventions causing most of the pollution. Based on explanation above, several pollutants can cause air pollution, including carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, hydrocarbons, CFCs, and carbon dioxide. The contamination of air pollutants has several effects on the natural balance of the environment, and all other life forms.
The first effect of air pollution in the urban area is respiratory tract problems for humans and animals. Air pollution is known to irritate the eyes, lungs, nose, and throat. This pollution can cause various health problems, such as lung disease and upper respiratory tract disease. Children in areas exposed to air pollutants are commonly suffering from pneumonia and asthma. Data from WHO notes that air pollution is a critical risk factor for noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), causing an estimated one-quarter (24%) of all adult deaths from heart disease, 25% from stroke, 43% from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and 29% from lung cancer (WHO, 2018). There are more than 90% of people on earth breathing air with high levels of pollutants. In humans who inhale carbon monoxide (CO), the work of hemoglobin will be disrupted. As a result, oxygen will not circulate in the body smoothly. This condition can cause death due to CO poisoning (WHO, 2018).
Another effect of air pollution is the depletion of ozone layer and even worse can cause global warming. In the atmosphere, ozone is located in the stratosphere at an altitude of 15-60 km above the earth's surface. The function of this layer is to protect the earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation emitted by sunlight. Carbon monoxide from vehicles can also damage the ozone layer. If there is a lot of carbon monoxide gas in the air, the ozone layer is rapidly depleting. As the ozone layer will go thin, it will emit harmful rays back on earth and can cause skin and eye problems. Air pollution directly accelerates the rate at which global warming happens by depleting the ozone layer. Global warming refers to the rise in average surface temperatures on earth. This phenomenon happens when high levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere can block the heat reflection from the earth into the atmosphere. Consequently, the temperature across the earth's surface becomes increasingly hot. These higher temperatures lead to the melting of the polar ice caps and icebergs, which elevate sea levels and creates concern for the human race. Based on IPCC, they are at least 95% certain that humans are to blame for warming oceans, rapidly melting ice and rising sea levels.
In conclusion, Air pollution has been felt globally because of the effect of the rapid growth of industry and urban development. Air pollution is constantly damaging the whole environment system such as include global warming, and depletion of the ozone layers. This phenomenon is mostly caused by human interventions such as the number of motor vehicles, industrial waste, and lack of green space. It is human’s responsibility to keep this atmosphere neat and clean. Every individual should contribute personally to reduce air pollution in the urban area.

Here we are. Half way home. Still ok on bourbon, but again…there are still 5 games to get through. When I thought of this series, I wanted to have 9 regular season games and a bowl game. I feel like some of those really get lost when talking about stinker games and there were a few that could be right here. The 07 Cotton Bowl…Auburn does really nothing on offense and one of the best defenses in Auburn history clamp down on Nebraska to lock up the most forgettable 11 win season in Auburn history. The 1990 Peach Bowl, where Stan White goes off end to lock up a win over Indiana. Those are something in of themselves, but the 96 Independence Bowl…there it is.
THE PREGAME
On paper, this is a really scary matchup for Auburn. The Tigers enter Shreveport at 7-4 with gut wrenching losses to Georgia in overtime and to Alabama in Birmingham. The Black Knights on the other had were 10-1 on the year but really hadn’t played anyone. They were 9-0 going in to a matchup with Syracuse in the Carrier Dome and got blown out 42-17 but rebounded to put down Navy 28-24 in Philly a few weeks later.
Three things before we get started, I will be wearing this today while watching and the bourbon selection is Woodford (yes, this will become a staple because we all need something to hold on to and look forward to).
The final thing is for all of us. In my time collection Auburn things, I have been able to get some of the Auburn Network highlights of games. Therefore, since bowl games are said to be a reward for players, our reward for going back through this one is that in some of the video highlights will be the call by Jim Fyffe (you will see why I went to this extra step in a moment).
THE GAME
Alright, so let’s meet our announcers for today’s game.
Ok, Craig is good, not fantastic but hey, it’s the Weedeater Bowl…what do you really want. Ok so who’s the…
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! SWEET GOD NO!!!!! Oh for the love. Why have you forsaken me like this??? Can I watch the Peach Bowl instead? Please? Damn it, ok well what about the sideline…
Does Uber Eats deliver liquor? Prepare yourself for sideline reports that don’t make since but hey, maybe Hodge and Gilmore get into a shouting match over some dumb observation…one can only hope.
To get this thing underway, Auburn gets it first from the 26 and it wouldn’t take Auburn long to set a tone.
Ok, so before we go any further…did anyone else notice at :35 seconds in that clip what Rod says? No one with Craig in the backfield? Ok, so rewind the clip to the beginning…Ok so Rod is 1 for 1 on dynamite analysis….*gulp from cup* It’s gonna be a long day.
The Tigers would push all the way to the Army 2 but would stall out after two plays, the last one being this.
So that would set up my second favorite kicker in Auburn history for a chip shot Field Goal attempt
So Auburn strikes first and take a 3-0 lead.
So let’s join the broadcast to learn about the field conditions from Mr Hodge…
Wait…so the field is sorta choppy and the upright is crooked??? HOW DO YOU KNOW THIS BUT THE REFS DON’T?!?
Army would push the ball to midfield before having to punt it away and Auburn would take over at the 20.
One of my favorite things to see is the local flare at bowl games. They always do such a great job of welcoming fans in and making them feel comfortable at their
AGGGHHHHH!!!!! KILL IT WITH FIRE!!! DEAMON!!!!!
Lord protect me.
Ok back to the game.
Just D Craig doing D Craig things here as he puts Auburn in a good position on the drive. Auburn would need to convert a 4th down and Fred Beasley would do the job that would set up Auburn’s first TD of the day.
That would give Auburn a 10-0 lead as Army would get the ball back at their own 44 thanks to a great return. However, the Black Knights would not enjoy the field possession or the ball for long.
Auburn would take it and get down to the 10 before thanking Army very much for the gift and offering one of their own to the Cadets.
Army can’t do much from the 2 yard line and they go 3 and out where Auburn would get it from the 31 and make short work for yet another nice pass play.
That man could read me the phone book and I would be happy.
So Auburn enjoys a 17-0 lead over Army as we are just getting revved up in the 2nd quarter.
The Black Knights take it from the 20 and go 6 plays before punting and Auburn gets it from their 24. On the drive, the Tigers would need Fred Beasley to again snatch a 1st down on 4th down but the drive would stall out and Jarett Holmes would again be called on to add to the lead.
Auburn puts more distance between Army and themselves with a 20-0 lead.
However, Army finally started to show signs of life as they got it from the 20 and went to the air.
The Drive would cover 72 yards in 6 plays and cut in to Auburn’s lead at 20-7.
Auburn would get it at the 34 and would march down the field near the end of the half but a catch a fumble that hit the pylon so Army ended up with the ball and ended the half there.
To start the second half, the two teams would combine for 10 plays on 3 drives, all that would end in punts before Auburn finally got things going from the Army 47. The drive looked to be stalling out before the Tigers decided to go for it on 4th and 5.
SEE! It’s so much better than just listening to Gilmore!!!
Auburn would go for 2 to try and make it an even 21 but would fail so its 26-7 mid way through the 3rd.
Army would get it from their own 20 and would get in to Auburn territory before the drive stalled. Army would try a 4th down play action pass but it would fall incomplete. So the Tigers would get it from their own 23 and would look to put this one away.
That would set up Rusty Williams to run wild.
Auburn would again go for 2 but fail. So as we go to the 4th quarter, this is where we sit
And you are asking me, ok Drew, listening to Jim is nice and we are having fun here…but we want you to suffer while watching and sure, Rod Gilmore is doing good work, but…come on….we want DEEEP HURRRTING. Don’t worry my friends, the hurting is coming.
Army would take their drive to end the 3rd quarter from the 20 and would get the triple option working finally and would cash in from the Auburn redzone.
That makes it a 32-14 Auburn lead. Still feeling ok, just over 12 minutes left, as long as Auburn plays smart, this one is in the bag.
The two teams would again exchange possessions before Auburn would get it at the 43 before disaster struck.
Ok, so that’s not what Auburn needed at all.
4 plays later, Army was in the endzone and its now 32-21 Auburn with the lead. Auburn again would start out with great field position at the Army 44 yard line and would get down to the 23 before missing on a 4th down play to give it back to the Knights. Army would get the march going and would get down to the 30 before going back to the air.
Ok not good…that makes it 32-27 and then the Black Knights would go for 2
Alright so it’s 32-29 but really, there’s just over a minute left and, with no time outs left, they HAVE to get the onside kick, and could they really pull that off?
Son of a…so Army would get down to the Auburn 10 yard line before lining up for the tying field goal. This is too big a moment to have Rod Gilmore mess up, let’s go back to Jim Fyffe…wait. Isn’t this the goal post Hodge was talking about at the beginning of the game?
You can actually see that it is crooked in that clip. It was too wide left but…wow. Auburn would take a knee and get the hell out of Shreveport with a 32-29 win over the Black Knights.
THE AFTERGLOW
Following this game, somehow Rod Gilmore continued to be a color analyst for ESPN and still is to this day. No one is sure how or who he has dirt on but he must because he isn’t good at it. For the record, I am sure Roddy G is a nice person…but if he never did another Auburn football game, it would make me and my liver very happy. Alright, so this was our respite on the countdown. Next week, we get back to pain…I’m looking at you again 2011 season…

Hometown Rising, the first-ever Country Music & Bourbon Festival, will make its debut Saturday, September 14 and Sunday, September 15 at Highland Festival Grounds at KY Expo Center, combining two of Louisville's cultural cornerstones—great music and incredible bourbon. Hometown Rising's incredible music lineup will be led by country heavyweights including Luke Bryan, Tim McGraw, Keith Urban, and Little Big Town, with additional appearances from Dwight Yoakam, Brett Young, Jake Owen, Bret Michaels, Frankie Ballard, and many more. In total, more than 30 artists will play on three stages, including two side-by-side main stages, over the course of the weekend.
Hometown Rising exclusive VIP packages, General Admission tickets, camping and hotel packages, as well as special event tickets go on sale Friday, February 15 at 12:00 PM EDT. With three back-to-back festival weekends in Louisville in 2019, Danny Wimmer Presents wants to ensure all fans have the chance to enjoy multiple events with an affordable and convenient ticketing option. "I am beyond thrilled to be playing the very first year of Hometown Rising, and to have the opportunity to be part of such a prestigious and eclectic lineup of modern country artists," says performer Alice Wallace. Adds festival producer Danny Wimmer, "Hometown Rising is a blend of the music and culture I grew up around, in a place I now consider a second home. While DWP is best known for our rock festivals, I was surrounded by country music growing up in Jacksonville, Florida, and I'm excited to be expanding our portfolio with a genre and a place that are both close to my heart. I can't think of a better location to launch a country music festival than right here in bourbon country. Mayor Fischer and the Louisville community continue to be great partners as we take this next step in the marriage of great music, food and bourbon." Bourbon authority and best-selling author Fred Minnick is the festival's official spirits curator and has helped assemble incredible onsite experiences, including bourbon tastings and workshops for fans 21+ during Bourbon Heritage Month. Avro Lancaster B Mk.X KB786 - Strathallan Collection, 1976 by fsll2 Via Flickr: From "Wikipedia": Lancaster B X KB976 is Canadian built and was delivered to Britain in May 1945 but saw no action. Returned to Canada in June 1945, the aircraft was converted to Mk.10 (AR) specification, being struck off charge in 1964. Lancaster KB976 made the last official flight as an RCAF aircraft on 4 July 1964 at the Calgary International Air Show with F/L Lynn Garrison, as captain, and F/L Ralph Langemann as co-pilot. It is worth noting that neither Garrison nor Langemann had ever flown a Lancaster before, and Garrison had broken his ankle the night before this flight. Their historic flight was authorized personally by the then Minister of National Defence, Paul Hellyer, who flew to Calgary for the celebration. Garrison will be remembered for his oft-repeated comment, "If it has fuel and noise, I can fly it." Lynn Garrison then purchased KB976 from Crown Assets Disposal Corporation as an addition to his historic collection. He created the Air Museum of Canada in April 1964. Sold in 1974 to the Strathallan Collection in Scotland, KB976 was registered G-BCOH prior to being flown across the Atlantic and then statically displayed until 1987. Bought by collector Charles Church, the aircraft was moved to Woodford Aerodrome for restoration to airworthy condition, where the fuselage centre section was damaged in a hangar collapse. Another Canadian Lancaster, KB994, that had survived only as a fuselage, was sourced to replace the irreparably damaged parts of KB976. Sadly, Charles Church died in a flying accident soon after and the rebuild was abandoned. The aircraft and its replacement parts were later sold to Doug Arnold, before finally being bought by Kermit Weeks in 1992. KB976 has since been stored at his Fantasy of Flight museum in Florida awaiting restoration. The rear fuselage and rear gunner's position was salvaged from the wrecked original fuselage and is on display at the AeroVenture Museum in Doncaster, Yorkshire, UK. The original extended nose of KB976 has been built backwards into an authentic fuselage and cockpit by Jeremy Hall and is on display at Brookland's Museum in Weybridge, UK. The residue of parts from KB994 were stored in the UK before being sold to the Australian National Aviation Museum to assist in the restoration of Avro Lincoln RF342

Postponed IPOs in Europe Raise Hopes for a 2020 Resurrection
(Bloomberg) –This year’s weak market for European initial public offerings would have looked a lot different had companies followed through on their plans to list.
Many companies announced their intention to float, only to change their minds. One of the most high-profile failed IPOs this year was Swiss Re AG’s attempt to list its U.K. business ReAssure in July, scuppered by weak investor demand. British insurer Phoenix Group Holdings Plc this month said it was scooping up the unit for $4.3 billion.
Others are expected to come back and tap the market in 2020, but several haven’t been heard from since. Here is a guide to 2019’s zombie IPOs:
Voyager AIR (Guernsey, investment company)
After applying to list on the Specialist Fund Segment on the London Stock Exchange in June, the aircraft leasing firm decided to postpone rather than push ahead. The firm said concerns about liquidity triggered to star asset manager Neil Woodford’s U.K. equity funds had a “larger-than-expected impact on investor sentiment.” It intended to come back to market later in the year, but there has been no news since.
Synsam (Sweden, eye-wear retail chain)
The Swedish high-street optician had appointed a six-bank syndicate and was going full-steam ahead with its plans to list in Stockholm before the summer. But private equity owner CVC postponed the sale, which would have been the biggest IPO in Sweden since Munters in May 2017, Dagens Industri reported in June, pointing to volatile markets in the wake of trade tensions. CVC has been mum about whether a float will be revived in 2020.
CM.com (Netherlands, tech)
Consumer communication technology company CM.com was the first in a series of IPOs to be withdrawn in the fourth quarter in Europe. It failed to go through, but not for lack of trying as the bookbuilding period was extended twice to pull the listing across the finish line. In the end, investors couldn’t be persuaded to participate, leading the founders to abandon the plan, saying they would continue to execute their growth strategy.
Congatec (Germany, computer hardware)
On Oct. 11, the same day as CM.com, another tech company IPO bit the dust. German industrial computer module supplier Congatec first extended its investor education period by a couple of days and reduced its targeted offer size, but decided to postpone ahead of the bookbuilding period. It said it will re-focus its listing efforts to 2020, so this one may come back to market next year.
Logistrial (Germany, property) and Domicil (Germany, real estate)
Two German IPOs that never made it to bookbuilding were the proposed offerings for Logistrial and Domicil in Frankfurt. The former, a logistics and industrial property manager, didn’t get the desired feedback from investors, who took issue with the structure of fee payments between the company and its parent, and thought it wiser to push its plans to 2020. Bloomberg reported at the time that the deal could be revived relatively quickly if a cornerstone investor could be secured, so this one could move quickly.
Selecta (Switzerland, vending machine operator)
Though this one didn’t make it to the intention-to-float stage, KKR-owned Selecta was broadly expected to happen before the end of 2019. Finanz und Wirtschaft reported in October that 80% of the banking work on the float had been done, which puts the vending machine operator in a good position to be early out of the gates in 2020 if IPO conditions are favorable.
Kaspi.kz (Kazakhstan, fintech)
One of this year’s biggest misses was Kazakh fintech business Kaspi’s canceled London listing on Oct. 17. It would have been the largest central Asian financial company to list in London in a decade, but was called off when investor appetite put its valuation near $3.5 billion, below the $4 billion the owners wanted. The timing was unfortunate, as fellow Kazakh lender Halyk Bank sold a 10% stake in the midst of Kaspi’s IPO process, already saturating demand.
Ferretti (Italy, yacht maker) and RCF Group (Italy, audio systems)
Oct. 17 was also a bad day for Italian flotations, as two were withdrawn within one day: yacht maker Ferretti and sound equipment designer RCF. Ferretti used every tactic in the book to make the IPO happen: paring the price, reducing the size of the offering and extending the offer period, but to no avail. The cut valuation was too low for the owners to push ahead, though its more premium rival Sanlorenzo did pull off a successful listing this month. There has been no word about whether Ferretti or RCF will try again.
Afreximbank (Africa, export-import bank)
Although investors showed a healthy amount of interest in the African Export-Import Bank’s proposed offering in London, volatile markets and uncertainty around Brexit made it think better of pushing ahead. In a statement, the bank said it would “continue to monitor the markets to find the appropriate window to launch its offering.”
DNEG (U.K., visual effects)
One day before its shares were due to start trading, DNEG, which produced the visual effects for some of the Harry Potter and Avengers films among others, pulled its IPO. It cited market uncertainty, adding that it got a strong level of interest from investors and will be assessing when to restart its IPO once conditions improve. One investor commented that the deal was “not a bargain” and could have been done at a lower price.
Balboa Ventures (Spain, private equity)
What would have been Spain’s first listing this year was halted in November as parent company Arcano postponed a flotation of its technology-focused private equity arm Balboa. As most before it, the reason cited for the suspension was market conditions. There is no news about whether a listing could be revived.
DiaMonTech (Germany, medtech)
DiaMonTech, which developed a non-invasive medical device to measure blood glucose levels for diabetic patients, postponed its Frankfurt IPO because of “insufficient oversubscription” in November, saying that the company is “sufficiently financed” as it stands.
SDIC Power Holdings (China, electric power plants)
A third foreign-based company was put off by market conditions from floating in London: SDIC Power. It was due to list global depositary receipts on the Shanghai-London Stock Connect segment in December. The listing has been delayed indefinitely.
Summiq (Germany, renewable energy)
The last IPO to be withdrawn this year was Summiq, which is building a portfolio of solar and wind power plants in Europe. This was the sixth float to be canceled in Germany, which saw more fail than complete this year. Management decided to call off the offering because of low investor demand and is evaluating other options, including an IPO at a later point in time.

DUBAI: Saudi Arabia is seeking the death penalty against five out of 21 people under investigation in connection with the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
Five senior government officials have also been dismissed.
Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist and critic of Saudi policies, was killed in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on Oct. 2 after entering to obtain documents for his marriage.
Saudi Arabia initially denied knowledge of his fate, then offered contradictory explanations including that he was killed in a rogue operation and that the killing was premeditated. Those varying accounts drew international scepticism.
On Thursday, the Saudi public prosecutor said Khashoggi was killed by lethal injection, then dismembered and handed over to an unidentified “local cooperator”. The whereabouts of his remains are still unknown.
Turkish security sources say that when Khashoggi entered the consulate, he was seized by 15 Saudi intelligence operatives who had flown in on two jets just hours before.
A senior Saudi official confirmed to Reuters they were among those under investigation, and on Thursday the U.S. Treasury imposed sanctions on all of them under the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act, along with two other officials.
Most of the 15 worked in the Saudi military or security and intelligence services, including at the royal court, according to Saudi and Turkish officials and several sources with ties to the royal court.
Turkey’s pro-government Sabah newspaper published what it said were photographs of the men taken from surveillance footage at the airport, two hotels they briefly checked into, the consulate and the consul’s residence.
The following profiles of some of those detained or dismissed are based on those photographs, Saudi media reports and information from Saudi officials and sources.
SAUD AL-QAHTANI
Saud al-Qahtani, seen as the right-hand man to Prince Mohammed, was removed as a royal court adviser and is the highest-profile figure implicated in the incident.
He joined the royal court under the late King Abdullah. He rose to prominence as a confidant in Prince Mohammed’s secretive inner circle. He regularly spoke on behalf of the crown prince, known as MbS, and has given direct orders to senior officials including in the security apparatus, the sources with ties to the royal court said.
Tasked with countering alleged Qatari influence on social media, Qahtani used Twitter to attack criticism of the kingdom in general and Prince Mohammed in particular. He also ran a WhatsApp group with local newspaper editors, dictating the court line.
Qahtani had tried to lure Khashoggi back to Saudi Arabia after he moved to Washington a year ago fearing reprisals for his views, according to people close to the journalist and the government.
In an August 2017 Twitter thread asking his 1.35 million followers to flag accounts for a black list for monitoring, Qahtani wrote: “Do you think I make decisions without guidance? I am an employee and a faithful executor of the orders of my lord the king and my lord the faithful crown prince.”
The senior Saudi official said Qahtani had authorised one of his subordinates, Maher Mutreb, to conduct what he said was meant to be a negotiation for Khashoggi’s return to the kingdom. Qahtani also supplied Mutreb with unspecified information based on his earlier conversations with Khashoggi, the official said.
The public prosecutor said a travel ban has been imposed on Qahtani while the investigation continues, but four sources based in the Gulf told Reuters this week that he is still at liberty and continues to operate discreetly.
He is 40 years old, according to the U.S. Treasury. Qahtani did not respond to questions from Reuters. Reuters was not able to reach Mutreb for comment.
MAHER MUTREB
General Maher Mutreb, an aide to Qahtani for information security, was the lead negotiator inside the consulate, according to the senior Saudi official. Without naming him, the public prosecutor said the lead negotiator was the person who decided to kill Khashoggi rather than repatriate him.
Mutreb is a senior intelligence officer and part of Prince Mohammed’s security team. He appeared in photographs with the crown prince on official visits this year to the United States and Europe.
According to the Saudi official, Mutreb was selected for the Istanbul operation because he already knew Khashoggi from their time working together at the Saudi embassy in London.
“He knew Jamal very well and he was the best one to convince him to return,” the official said.
Mutreb received Khashoggi at the Saudi consul’s office around 1:25pm. He began by urging him to come home and claimed he was wanted by Interpol, the official said.
The official said Khashoggi told Mutreb he was violating diplomatic norms and asked whether Mutreb planned to kidnap him. Mutreb said yes, the official said, in an apparent attempt to intimidate Khashoggi.
Sabah newspaper published stills from surveillance cameras that appear to show Mutreb entering the consulate three hours before Khashoggi, and later outside the consul’s residence.
Britain’s Foreign Office confirmed that Mutreb served as a first secretary at the Saudi embassy in London for a period including 2007. He is 47 years old, according to the U.S. Treasury.
SALAH TUBAIGY
Salah Tubaigy is a forensic expert at the Saudi interior ministry’s criminal evidence department, according to a biography posted online by the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties.
In the Istanbul operation, he was supposed to remove evidence such as fingerprints or proof of the use of force, according to the Saudi official.
Tubaigy spent three months in 2015 at Australia’s Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine to observe death investigation procedures and learn about the use of CT scanning for mass fatality incidents, director Noel Woodford told Reuters.
Photographs from the institute’s 2015 annual report, which resemble the suspect named by Turkish media, show Tubaigy wearing medical scrubs, a smock and rubber gloves in a laboratory setting, and separately chatting with colleagues.
Tubaigy did not respond to an email sent by Reuters.
The Saudi Society of Forensic Medicine lists him as a board member. He earned a master’s degree in forensic medicine from the University of Glasgow in 2004, the biography shows. A university spokeswoman declined to comment.
Tubaigy is 47 years old, according to the U.S. Treasury.
AHMED AL-ASIRI
Ahmed al-Asiri, former deputy head of General Intelligence, was among those sacked by King Salman. The public prosecutor said he was the one who ordered the operation to repatriate – but not kill – Khashoggi.
Asiri joined the military in 2002, according to Saudi media reports, and was spokesman for the Saudi-led coalition which intervened in Yemen’s civil war in 2015. He was named deputy chief of foreign intelligence by royal decree in April 2017.
US Treasury sanctions announced on Thursday did not include Asiri. Reuters was unable to reach him for comment.
MOUSTAFA AL-MADANI
Moustafa al-Madani led the intelligence efforts for the 15-man team in Istanbul, the senior Saudi official said.
According to that official, Madani donned Khashoggi’s clothes, eyeglasses and Apple watch and left through the back door of the consulate in an attempt to make it look like the journalist had walked out of the building.
Madani is a government employee who studied at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province, according to a Facebook profile with photographs resembling the suspect identified by Turkish media.
He is 56 years old, according to the U.S. Treasury. Reuters was unable to reach Madani for comment. University officials could not immediately be reached for comment.
MESHAL SAAD ALBOSTANI
Meshal Saad Albostani is lieutenant in the Saudi Air Force from the Red Sea port of Jeddah, according to a Facebook profile with multiple photographs resembling the suspect identified by Turkish media.
The senior Saudi official said he was responsible for the Istanbul team’s logistics.
Albostani studied at the University of Louisville in Kentucky, according to Facebook. University officials contacted by Reuters said they could not confirm a graduate of that name.
A LinkedIn profile matching his name and photo says he has served in the air force since 2006.
He is 31 years old, according to the U.S. Treasury. He could not immediately be reached for comment.
MOHAMMAD AL-OTAIBI
Mohammad al-Otaibi is the Istanbul Consul General. He gave Reuters a tour of the consulate four days after the murder, opening cupboards, filing cabinets and wooden panels covering air conditioning units in an effort to show that Khashoggi was not on the premises.
Otaibi left Istanbul ten days later and has not been heard from since. He was sanctioned on Thursday by the U.S. Treasury, which said he is 51 years old.
OTHER MEMBERS OF THE TEAM
Abdulaziz Mohammed al-Hawsawi is a member of the security team that travels with the Saudi crown prince, according to a New York Times report that cited a French professional who has worked with the royal family. He is 31, according to the U.S. Treasury. Reuters could not reach him for comment.
General Rashad bin Hamed al-Hamadi was removed as director of the general directorate of security and protection in the General Intelligence Presidency.
General Abdullah bin Khaleef al-Shaya was removed as assistant head of General Intelligence for human resources.
General Mohammed Saleh al-Ramih was removed as assistant head of General Intelligence for intelligence affairs.
None of the three generals were affected by U.S. Treasury sanctions announced on Thursday. They could not be reached for comment. The Treasury also named 10 other Saudis.
