For want of a nail...

Earlier today I went to a hardware store to find a replacement part for a 40-year-old bandsaw. This is kind of annoying, inasmuch as the part I lost is this weird proprietary clip which is only available from the manufacturer for $10, and there exists several different industry-standard options which are under a dollar; and lack of this clip renders the entire tool non-functional. It's a bit of a miracle the manufacturer is still in business and sells the part - too often I've found myself lacking one very cheap piece which cannot be replaced.

That said, it did remind me of one of the funniest moments in my life.

When I was 19 and in college, my father made a deal with me: I could have my mother's old car if I replaced the timing belt.

I will not be delving into the details of what a timing belt is. Suffice to say it is a critical part of the car. Replacing it involves pulling the engine out of the vehicle altogether, and taking apart half of said engine. One does not often need to replace this part, but it's something which will reasonably happen a few times in the life of a car.

Doing this solo is not for the faint of heart. It is a lot of work and takes about two whole days if you know what you're doing, which fortunately I mostly did.

Mostly. Now, one part of this process is taking off the serpentine belt (a belt which runs pretty much every part of the engine that doesn't directly actually make the car go vroom: air conditioner, alternator, water pump, &c. Also important.) In the process I broke one of the pulleys. Which is impressive, and indicates the pulley was going to break: I'm not THAT strong.

Thus, I went to the dealership to get a new pulley, as I had found I could not buy one from cheaper sources (car dealerships are the worst place for parts and service; they're no more capable and cost many times more). I had brought the broken pulley in case there was a question as to what I needed. I went to the Parts counter.

Me: "Hi! I need a new serpentine pulley for a 1992 Camry!"

Clerk: "We don't sell those. They don't break."

Me: *Reaches into the bag I carried in* *Wordlessly sets the two pieces of the broken pulley on the counter*

Clerk: *Is not trained for this*

Me: *Is very done*

Clerk: "Uh. I'll check with the repair guys and see what I can do."

Me: "Thank you."

(Half an hour later they sold me a new pulley. They took it out of one of their new cars. I was honestly very impressed they could get it out that quickly.)
