AC-130J Ghostrider Gunship Has Operated From A Highway For The First Time
Operating from highways could make AC-130J gunships more survivable and flexible, but questions remain about their role in high-end fights.
Joseph Trevithick Posted on Aug 5, 2024 1:51 PM EDT
The US Air Force says an AC-130J Ghostrider gunship has operated from a highway for the first time as part of the service's larger push to reduce its dependence on traditional runways. This is also comes amid questions about the future of the gunships in future high-end fights.
USAF capture
An AC-130J Ghostrider gunship has operated from a highway for the first time during a recent exercise, according to the U.S. Air Force. This reflects a push across the U.S. military to be less dependent on traditional runways and established bases that would be high-priority targets for enemy forces during a future major conflict, such as one in the Pacific against China. This also comes as hard questions are being asked about what roles and missions there might be for the AC-130J in a high-end fight after the type has spent the past two decades supporting counter-terrorism and other lower-intensity operations.
The AC-130J in question landed on and then subsequently took off from a stretch of U.S. Highway 63 in Bono, Arkansas, on August 4 as part of the larger Emerald Warrior Field Training Exercise II (FTX II). An MC-130J Commando II special operations tanker-transport, a C-146A Wolfhound special operations light transport aircraft, and a standard C-130H cargo plane also participated in the road operations training. With the exception of the C-130H, all of these aircraft were from units assigned to Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC). The C-130H was from the Arkansas Air National Guard’s 189th Airlift Wing.
“The MC-130J crew then set up a Forward Arming and Refueling Point (FARP), as the AC-130J assigned to the 1st Special Operations Wing at Hurlburt Field, Florida, made its approach, landed, refueled, rearmed, and took off again,” according to an Air Force release. “The primary objective of this exercise was to validate AFSOC’s capability to operate in austere environments with minimal infrastructure.”

“The exercise provided an opportunity for participating units to refine their skills and advance ongoing pathfinding and experimentation efforts within AFSOC,” the release added.
A picture for the road operations portion of Emerald Warrior FTX II showed what appears to be a Common Launch Tube (CLT) being unloaded from a transit canister. What other munitions Air Force personnel may have practiced loading aboard the AC-130J in this austere environment is unclear.

The AC-130J’s current armament package consists of a 30mm automatic cannon and a 105mm howitzer that fire out the left side of the aircraft, as well as the ability to employ a variety of precision-guided bombs and missiles. This includes precision munitions that are launched via CLTs, such as the GBU-44/B Viper Strike glide bomb and AGM-176 Griffin missile.
“This exercise serves as a significant milestone for AFSOC, demonstrating our ability to operate in diverse and austere environments,” Tech. Sgt. Robert Gallagher, assigned to the AFSOC Air Commando Development Center, who acted as the lead planner for the highway landings, said, according to the Air Force release. “By leveraging ACE concepts, we enhance our operational flexibility and resilience.”
ACE here stands for Agile Combat Employment, which refers to a set of concepts of operations centered on expeditionary and distributed deployments that occur at irregular intervals across a broadening number of operating locations. The core function of ACE is to upend enemy targeting cycles, and by extension reduce the vulnerability of friendly forces, by operating in a less predictable fashion. The video at the top of this story from Emerald Warrior FTX II highlights all of this by showing the AC-130J being able to get in and out relatively quickly. The C-130 family’s impressive reverse thrust capability is on display, as well.
Being able to operate from remote and austere environments, such as highways, is a key element of current ACE planning. As such, the Air Force special operations aircraft, like MC-130Js and C-146As, as well as conventional ones, like A-10 Warthog ground attack aircraft and standard C-130 cargo planes, have been conducting road operations training on an increasingly regular basis. MQ-9 Reaper drones have also participated in similar exercises in the past.

Other services have been involved in this new burst of roadway exercises in the past few years. The U.S. Marine Corps has also been very actively training to use roads and other alternatives to large traditional runways as part of the service’s own array of new expeditionary and distributed concepts of operations.
AFSOC, as well as other elements of the U.S. special operations community, already have a long history of operating from impromptu forward locations, often in sensitive or denied areas, but generally on a more ad-hoc mission-to-mission basis.
“We’ve recently been returning to tactics, techniques, and procedures to find out where all of the 3,000-foot straight highways in the world are” as part of a broader push to become “runway agnostic,” Air Force Lt. Gen. Tony Bauernfeind, then head of AFSOC, said last year. Bauernfeind is now superintendent of the United States Air Force Academy.

For AC-130Js operating in their traditional special operations support role, being able to operate from roads and other remote locations on a more general basis could help allow them to fly (as well as refuel and rearm) closer to designated operating areas. This could increase their time on station and shorten how long it might take them to get to and from where they need to be, as well as just generally expand their operational flexibility.
At the same time, as the U.S. military shifts its main focus away from counter-terrorism and other low-intensity missions to preparing for high-end operations, especially in a potential future conflict against China, questions have emerged about AC-130J’s future. Even during the past two decades of support operations in largely permissive airspace over places like Iraq and Afghanistan, AC-130 gunships have operated almost exclusively at night in part to reduce vulnerability to potential threats from the ground. The War Zone just explored these broader issues facing the Ghostrider in the context of a rare appearance by one of the gunships at a sinking exercise (SINKEX) during the larger biennial Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) exercise, which just wrapped last week.

An AC-130J from the 27th Special Operations Wing at Marine Corps Air Station Kaneohe Bay in Hawaii during RIMPAC 2024. USAF
The Air Force is in the midst now of a review of the Ghostrider’s current and future capabilities that could lead to the aircraft losing their iconic, but relatively short-ranged 105mm howitzers. A plan to integrate a laser-directed energy weapon, described originally as having immense potential in lower-intensity warfare contexts, has already been scrapped.
There is growing emphasis now on increasing the AC-130J’s stand-off strike capabilities, including through the addition of small cruise missiles to the Ghostrider’s arsenal. The Air Force is looking into the potential of using other C-130 variants, including MC-130Js, as well as the C-17, as launch platforms for larger cruise missiles and other munitions using a palletized system called Rapid Dragon.

In addition, AFSOC is interested in adding a new active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar to the AC-130Js to help extend the reach of their targeting capabilities, as well as provide added situational awareness. The gunships have already been receiving upgrades to their electronic warfare and communications suites.
The AC-130J, its capabilities, and its roles and missions appear set to evolve significantly in the coming years. Operating more regularly from highways and other roads looks now to be on the horizon for the Ghostriders.

Safest Ways for Auto Transport
Let's check out the safest and most secure ways 🔒 for auto transport. Here are the Top 5 Safest Ways to transport a vehicle.
Auto Transport by Airplane

For those who own rare or valuable vehicles, auto transport by air is a secure and fast solution that prioritizes safety, speed, and convenience. While the cost can be high, the peace of mind that comes with knowing your car is in safe hands and on its way quickly is priceless. Whether you're shipping a classic car across the country or an exotic car internationally, air transport provides a level of service that meets the needs of high-end vehicle owners.
Auto Transport by Amtrak Auto Train

The Amtrak Auto Train offers a safe travel solution that combines convenience, cost savings, and security for those traveling between Virginia and Florida. While it has some limitations in terms of route and the need for passengers to travel with their vehicles, it remains an attractive option for many travelers seeking a hassle-free way to transport their cars over long distances.
Auto Transport by Cargo Ship

While auto transport via ship is a safe and effective method, it is only necessary for overseas shipping. For most mainland moves, land-based transport options like open or enclosed carriers remain the best choice. If you need to ship a car internationally, choosing a reputable company like Matson or CStar Line ensures a smooth experience.
Auto Transport by Enclosed Carrier

Enclosed car transport is an excellent choice for anyone looking to provide maximum safety, first class service and high level security for their high-value, classic, or luxury vehicle. The comprehensive protection from weather and road debris, combined with enhanced security measures, makes it the ideal option for ensuring your car arrives at its destination in perfect condition. While it may be more expensive and require careful planning, the benefits of enclosed car transport far outweigh the costs for those who prioritize the safety and preservation of their vehicles.
Auto Transport by Open Carrier

While open auto transport is the most commonly used method for shipping vehicles, it comes with certain safety disadvantages that should be considered before making a decision. The lack of protection from external elements, road debris, and potential theft are among the primary concerns for vehicle owners opting for this type of transport.

What are the duties of the royal guard?
Here’s the old post going into detail about the royal guard and their divisions. I added a few new branches to the guard since then!
There are five divisions to the royal guard!
The foot (or general) guard! They’re the unspecialized soldiers. Trained in combat and required to keep up a certain level of health to keep tue job. They are the largest part of the royal guard by far and are considered reserve troops for whenever things go south. Since ebott isn’t in active war right now, these monsters work providing public services like cleaning roads, providing security for basic public areas, even some unskilled construction like digging ditches and helping clear fields or unused land. Many monsters join the the foot guard because 10 years of service means that you can have your schooling paid for if you ever pursue higher education.
The peace guard, aka the police force of ebott is a branch of royal guard trained as the police officers. Undyne is head of the ebott city branch, and Star is a search and rescue peace guard. These guards include the average officer, investigators and the disaster relief teams.
The royal navy is the largest active combat ready division. Ebott has a very strong navy guard with the sea and hadal monsters joining it in droves. These monsters patrol and protect ebotts borders, and even accompany ships carrying cargo outside of the country, as well as search cargo coming in for dangerous items and people. Since ebott is surrounded by sea, this section of royal guards are constantly on duty being rotated in and out at all times
The royal air force is the newest division as ebott only has a tiny fleet of war ready ships (that the rest of the world knows about ;)). It’s growing slowly, but only takes the best recruits so it’s hard to get in
The smallest but most prestigious unit of the royal guard are the royal attendants. These guards personally work with the royals and some choice important individuals as security and other duties like secretary positions. You need both brains and brawn to even be considered, and one can’t apply. A royal attendant is always chosen by recommendation only
The royal guard is the backbone of ebott. It’s the largest growing “company” employing the largest number of monsters and humans alike in the country. Without it the country certainly wouldn’t be able to run as well as it does today

Amazon deliveries could be headed for some turbulence in the new year. Pilots for US-based Air Transport International, a cargo airline that ferries Amazon packages from its fulfillment centers to airports nearer to its customers, voted to authorize a strike last month. During the three and a half years the union has been negotiating with ATI, wages in the industry have soared, and ATI’s pilots complain that their pay has fallen behind. Meanwhile, they say ATI is facing record attrition as pilots jump ship to better-paying carriers.
A strike could throw a wrench in Amazon’s logistics network. ATI, owned by holding company ATSG, operates half of the 80 US aircraft currently in service for Amazon, according to an estimate by Planespotters. But the pilots, who are represented by the Air Line Pilots Association union, can’t walk out until at least next year.
Federal law requires airline labor disputes to be mediated by the US government’s National Mediation Board, which will implement a 30-day cooling-off period if it determines the parties have reached an impasse and they refuse arbitration. If a resolution isn’t reached during that time, the pilots can walk off the job or the airline can lock them out. Some 98 percent of ATI’s 640 pilots participated in the vote and only one didn’t vote to authorize the strike.
Amazon outsources the operation of its air service, which it calls Amazon Air, to a small network of cargo airlines whose pilots fly Amazon-branded planes. In the US alone, they collectively operate more than 330 daily flights for Amazon between more than 50 airports, according to the logistics consultancy MWPVL International.
Most airlines that work with Amazon also devote a large share of their businesses to transporting cargo for other customers, including DHL and the US military. In recent years, ATI has gone all-in on the retailer, however. Amazon deliveries now comprise 94 percent of ATI’s flying hours, according to the pilots’ union, making the company and its workers dependent on the ecommerce giant.
ATI’s pilots’ union says that more than a third of the airline’s pilots have left so far this year, after 27 percent of them departed last year. The union says 42 percent of its pilots are currently on probation, meaning they’re in their first year of service. “We’re watching our carrier disintegrate,” says Mike Sterling, chair of the ATI pilots’ union.
The pilots’ union says they have delivered a 98 percent on-time performance rate, but the rapid turnover and declining experience levels are threatening that. “This market is highly competitive, and ATSG is diminishing its ability to provide quality service to Amazon,” says Sterling. “We think this is a conversation that needs to be had between all three parties.” Amazon and ATI did not respond to requests for comment. During an earnings call in May, ATSG’s former CEO said that ATI’s service quality remained outstanding, but acknowledged that training replacements for departing pilots had raised costs for the airline.
When the pilots’ union negotiated a contract with the company in 2018, pilots’ pay, benefits, and schedules were competitive with similar airlines, says Josh Hoy, a captain who started at the airline seven years ago. He initially looked at the job as just a stepping stone but decided to stick around when ATI’s relationship with Amazon took off. “It was a really exciting time, being on the ground floor of that kind of growth,” he says. “I started to have the conversation with my wife and said, ‘I think this might be the place to stay.’”
However, “as time went on, we’ve fallen far behind,” Hoy says. ATI’s union says its pilots are paid less on an hourly basis than those at all of Amazon’s seven other carriers. “We operate under the same rules, in the same airspace, on the exact same routes. The airplanes cost the exact same to operate,” says Hoy. “Everything is exactly the same, except for our pay.”
No Fondness for Labor
Amazon generally goes to great lengths to avoid engaging with unions and to deter its employees or those who work for its contractors from joining them. The company spent the last year and a half unsuccessfully challenging the first and only union victory at a US Amazon warehouse. When employees of a delivery contractor in Southern California unionized earlier this year, Amazon refused to jointly bargain with the workers and terminated its agreement with the contractor. “Amazon has not demonstrated a real fondness for labor,” Sterling acknowledges. “I would love to change that narrative with them.”
The last and only time Amazon faced a strike by one of its air carriers was in 2016, during the early days of its air cargo operation, when 250 pilots for ABX Air walked off the job. A judge deemed the strike illegal, however, and ordered the pilots back to work the following day. Nonetheless, a former Amazon Air employee told WIRED last year that Amazon suspended its business with ABX for several weeks after the strike ended to demonstrate the relative power it held in the relationship, which soon soured.
ATI’s pilots are taking a less antagonistic tone in hopes of bringing Amazon to the negotiating table. “What we don’t want to do is affect our customers,” says Sterling. “We’ve done a lot to protect our obsession with Amazon.” However, he says the intransigence of ATSG’s management has left the pilots with no choice but to call a strike.
“This side of Amazon’s network is the most vulnerable to labor strikes,” says Marc Wulfraat, president of logistics consultancy MWPVL. If drivers or warehouse workers strike, the company can shift the flow of products and packages to one of its many nearby warehouses, but airports are fewer in number and farther apart.
Amazon could compensate for a walkout at ATI by shifting volume to other air carriers under the Amazon Air umbrella, but only if they have the capacity to handle the influx at all of the airports. It could also transport some of its packages by truck instead, which it did during the brief 2016 strike. However, this could result in slower shipping times and reduced service, says Wulfraat, which flies in the face of Amazon’s mantra of customer obsession.
Pilots also have the advantage of being generally in a strong position across the airline industry. “It’s still a very, very hot job market” for pilots, says Geoff Murray, a partner who works on aerospace at management consultancy Oliver Wyman. Plummeting demand for passenger pilots during the pandemic sent many into early retirement, worsening an existing pilot shortage that got more acute as the industry bounced back. Wages have soared. Oliver Wyman estimates that captains’ pay at the US mainline carriers, such as Delta and UPS, has increased 46 percent since 2020, while regional carriers have increased pay by 86 percent.
Pilot Drew Patterson came to ATI in 2021, attracted by the work-life balance the airline offered, but as the carrier lost pilots, he has seen his workload creep up and his schedule become more unpredictable. With fewer crews to operate the same number of flights, “everybody else's schedule gets compressed,” he says. “Sometimes you can be away from home for a long time.”
Long-term, he thinks Amazon’s continued growth should be a good thing for ATI and its employees, so he’s been willing to stick it out. But he’s not so sure all of his colleagues will feel the same about current conditions at the company.
“All of this has a real house-of-cards feeling to it,” says Sterling. “We just can’t sustain what we’re doing.”

Safe Transportation of Live Animals

The successful transportation of a sport horse, a specialized breed trained for competitive events, was accomplished by the ACGS experts. The international standards require a certain procedure for live animals. The company experts are IATA-trained professionals and know how to manage such projects. Transporting live animals necessitates careful preparations before delivery. The loadmaster develops a placement plan for the animals within the aircraft. To guarantee the utmost safety and comfort for the animals during transit, IATA LAR-certified stalls are utilized for the journey.
“Throughout the flight, we maintained optimal temperature and pressure conditions, which significantly contributed to the horse’s well-being and helped it endure the travel experience with ease”, – comments Daria Aksenova, ACGS Senior Sales Executive. “Our team is dedicated to providing the best possible care for all animals in transit, and this operation was no exception”.
In addition to ensuring the safety of the sport horse, comprehensive support services for the accompanying handler were provided. The commitment to excellence extends beyond the animal to the people involved in its care in ACGS.
Every detail matters when it comes to the transportation of equine athletes, and the highest standards of safety and comfort were met in this recent operation.

CDL Driving School in Seattle

CDL Driving School in Seattle: Launching a Successful Career Behind the Wheel Introduction The demand for commercial truck drivers has never been higher, and for many individuals in the Pacific Northwest, attending a CDL driving school in Seattle marks the beginning of a promising and stable career. Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) training programs are designed to prepare students for life on the road—equipping them with the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to safely and legally operate commercial vehicles such as tractor-trailers, buses, and tankers. Whether you’re switching careers, recently graduated, or looking for a new way to make a living, a CDL can be your ticket to independence, opportunity, and job security in an ever-growing industry. Why Seattle is a Smart Place to Start Your CDL Training Seattle is more than just the Emerald City—it’s a major hub for trade, shipping, and logistics. With its proximity to key transportation corridors like I-5 and its status as a gateway to international commerce via its busy ports, Seattle provides an ideal environment for learning the ins and outs of commercial driving. Students attending a CDL driving school in Seattle benefit from real-world driving scenarios, ranging from city traffic and rain-slicked roads to rural highways and mountainous terrain. These experiences enhance a student’s ability to adapt and handle diverse driving conditions, which is crucial for commercial drivers operating across various regions. Seattle’s diverse population and thriving economy also contribute to a high demand for CDL holders across multiple sectors, including delivery services, freight hauling, public transportation, and construction. From Amazon distribution routes to lumber supply chains headed east of the Cascades, the opportunities are widespread for graduates of local CDL programs. What to Expect at a CDL Driving School in Seattle Enrolling in a CDL driving school in Seattle typically involves classroom instruction, behind-the-wheel training, and rigorous testing. The process is designed to meet federal and state requirements to ensure all drivers are well-prepared for the responsibilities of operating large commercial vehicles. Here’s a breakdown of what students can expect:
Classroom Instruction The journey begins in the classroom, where students learn the rules of the road, safety protocols, and the technical knowledge required to pass the written CDL exam. Topics covered often include: • Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations • Hours of Service (HOS) compliance • Vehicle inspection procedures • Air brake systems • Cargo securement and hazardous material handling • Road signs, map reading, and trip planning This foundation is critical, as it not only prepares students for testing but also instills a mindset of safety and responsibility that is vital for every commercial driver.
Hands-On Driving Practice Once classroom training is complete, students transition to hands-on driving practice. This portion of the training typically takes place in a controlled environment before advancing to public roads. Skills developed during this stage include: • Pre-trip inspections • Backing maneuvers (straight line, offset, parallel) • Shifting gears (manual and automatic) • Lane control and turns • Highway merging and lane changes • Emergency braking and hazard avoidance Training in Seattle offers the unique benefit of mastering driving in varying weather conditions and traffic patterns. Navigating the wet streets of the Pacific Northwest or descending a steep hill in the Cascades can offer valuable experience that prepares drivers for almost any challenge on the road.
CDL Testing and Endorsements After completing the training, students must pass the CDL skills test, which includes: • The written knowledge test • The vehicle inspection test • The basic control skills test • The road driving test Additionally, students may choose to pursue specialized endorsements to increase their employment options, including: • T endorsement for double/triple trailers • P endorsement for passengers (e.g., bus drivers) • N endorsement for tank vehicles • H endorsement for hazardous materials • X endorsement for tankers with hazardous materials Each endorsement requires additional testing and, in some cases, background checks or TSA clearances. The Benefits of Attending a CDL Driving School in Seattle Completing a CDL driving school in Seattle provides more than just technical training. It sets the stage for long-term career success and opens doors to multiple industries. Here are just a few of the key benefits:
High Job Placement Rates With Seattle’s growing transportation and logistics sectors, many CDL graduates find employment quickly after completing their training. Companies across the region seek qualified drivers, often offering competitive wages, sign-on bonuses, and full benefits.
Job Security and Career Advancement CDL holders are in demand nationwide, with the American Trucking Associations (ATA) reporting a shortage of over 80,000 truck drivers in recent years. This demand translates to job security for qualified individuals and career growth potential. Drivers can move into specialized roles, training positions, or even launch their own owner-operator businesses.
Flexible Work Options A CDL can open up a variety of career paths. Some drivers prefer long-haul trucking and life on the open road, while others choose local delivery routes that let them return home every night. In Seattle, there are opportunities in municipal services, school bus driving, construction, and logistics—providing options for all lifestyles and preferences.
Independence and Travel Opportunities For those who enjoy travel and working independently, trucking offers a lifestyle that breaks free from the typical office routine. With a CDL, the entire country becomes your workplace, and the road becomes your office. Who Should Consider CDL Training in Seattle? A CDL driving school in Seattle is ideal for: • High school graduates looking for a stable and well-paying career path • Military veterans transitioning to civilian life • Individuals seeking a second career or a fresh start • People who enjoy driving and traveling • Workers affected by layoffs or industry changes • Aspiring entrepreneurs interested in owning and operating their own trucking business There are also training options available for individuals with limited or no prior driving experience, as well as programs designed to help with financing, job placement, and skill development. Important Considerations Before Enrolling Before committing to a CDL program, it’s important to understand a few key factors: • Medical Requirements: CDL applicants must pass a DOT physical exam to ensure they’re medically fit to operate a commercial vehicle. • Background Checks: Those pursuing certain endorsements, especially for hazardous materials, must undergo federal background screenings. • Time Commitment: Training programs can range from a few weeks to a few months, depending on whether the course is full-time, part-time, or accelerated. • Upfront Costs: CDL training involves tuition, fees for exams, licensing, and sometimes equipment. However, many schools offer financing, grants, or employer sponsorships. Conclusion Attending a CDL driving school in Seattle can be the first step toward a rewarding and in-demand career in commercial driving. With Seattle’s robust infrastructure, active ports, and constant flow of goods, the region offers a thriving environment for new drivers to learn, grow, and launch long-term careers. Whether you’re seeking job security, the freedom of the open road, or a fresh start in a high-demand industry, CDL training is a practical investment in your future. The road ahead is wide open—now’s the time to take the wheel.

IMAGES: KC-10 Extender flies its last combat mission as retirement approaches
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 10/07/2023 - 21:02in History, Military
The KC-10 Extender air refueling jet recorded its last combat mission, closing a penultimate chapter in the aircraft's four decades of service as it prepares for retirement.
The last KC-10 deployed left Prince Sultan Air Base, a U.S.-run outpost in Saudi Arabia, on October 5, after supporting combat operations in the U.S. Central Command, the Air Force said in a statement on Friday (06/10). The service did not provide details about the final missions of the tanker aircraft.
“The KC-10 has been the anchor of air refueling in the [region] since the Desert Storm,” said the head of the 908º Air Refueling Expeditionary Squadron, Maj. Joseph Rush, in the statement. “Thousands of aviators were deployed to support KC-10 combat operations. ... Being here at the height of this legacy is a privilege."
The 908º EARS has flown with the KC-10 in U.S.-led military campaigns against terrorist groups in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria from Prince Sultan Air Base and Al Dhafra Air Base in the United Arab Emirates since 2002.
Thursday's mission was the last trip of the KC-10 in combat operations around the world.
Since it entered service in 1981, the KC-10 has moved thousands of tons of cargo, transported thousands of soldiers and supplied many millions of gallons of fuel to other aircraft in conflicts around the world. Jets act as aerial gas stations where military aircraft can refuel without the need to divert to physical bases for service.

“For a fighter, air refueling can take two hours of flight without refueling and turn it into an eight-hour combat mission,” Rush said in the statement. "This translates into uninterrupted coverage of approximate air support for coalition troops on the ground or counter-aircraft defensive coverage for high-value air assets in a combat zone."
The exit of the KC-10 is part of the U.S. Air Force's comprehensive plan to review its old inventory with new aircraft that are cheaper to maintain and can withstand the demands of future wars.
The service is withdrawing the fleet of 59 Extender jets from service to make way for Boeing's new KC-46 Pegasus tanker aircraft, which can carry more than 212,000 pounds of fuel, 65,000 pounds of cargo and almost 60 passengers. The new fleet is also equipped with more defensive measures that can help it survive enemy attacks and is a test for communication software that can make it a data sharing center for forces in the area.
The KC-10s will continue to fly in the United States as the units complete the exchange of older fuselages and training on the KC-46, the statement said.
The first KC-10 went to the aircraft cemetery at Davis-Monthan Air Base, Arizona, in July 2020. The last of the fleet is scheduled to retire in September 2024.

Despite their age, aviators often consider the KC-10 their favorite fuselage in a fleet of tanker aircraft hampered by various software and hardware design problems.
The KC-135 Stratotanker faced years of flight restrictions while the service tried to fix the faulty autopilot software. And the KC-46 is in the middle of years of upgrades to its external chambers, the refueling boom, fuel leaks, load restrictions and much more that have delayed its full participation in global operations.
The KC-46 Pegasus is replacing the KC-10 and the KC-135 in the USAF.
The final deployment is a "bittersweet" end to KC-10 operations, Rush said in the statement.
"It's exciting for our community, as we've taken many of the best parts of the KC-10 culture we've built over the last 42 years and bring these best practices and experiences to a totally new weapon system," he said.

However, the increasing volume of shipments has also raised concerns about security risks, leading to a growing need for advanced security and screening systems in the air cargo sector.
Air cargo security refers to the measures and protocols implemented to ensure the safe transportation of goods by air. It includes efforts to prevent unauthorized access to cargo, detect dangerous or prohibited items, and ensure compliance with international safety standards. In recent years, technological advancements in cargo screening systems have revolutionized how security is managed in the air freight industry.

Market Overview
The air cargo security and screening systems market is evolving rapidly in response to the increasing need for safety and security in global logistics. In 2023, the market was valued at approximately USD 10 billion and is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of around 6% over the next five years. The market growth is driven by several factors, including increasing global trade, advancements in screening technologies, and growing concerns over the potential for terrorist threats and illegal trafficking.

Technological Advancements: The development of new and advanced screening technologies has revolutionized the air cargo security market. Innovations such as computed tomography (CT) scanners, artificial intelligence (AI)-powered analysis tools, and machine learning algorithms are making cargo screening faster, more accurate, and more efficient. These advancements are expected to play a pivotal role in driving market growth.
Government Regulations and Compliance: Governments worldwide have introduced stringent regulations to enhance air cargo security. For example, the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) mandates that all air cargo shipments undergo thorough screening before being loaded onto aircraft. Similarly, the European Union’s regulation EC 300/2008 requires that all cargo be screened in compliance with ICAO security standards. These regulations are driving the adoption of advanced screening systems among air cargo handlers and operators.

Conclusion
The air cargo security and screening systems market is poised for significant growth as global trade continues to expand and security threats evolve. Advances in technology, government regulations, and increasing demand for secure cargo transport are driving the adoption of cutting-edge security solutions. While challenges such as high costs and integration complexities exist, the continued development of innovative screening technologies will ensure that the market remains dynamic and resilient in addressing the security needs of the air cargo industry.
