Remembering Andres Siim (1962--2020). This is the 1988 competition entry for L.A.'s West Coast Gateway, a massive cultural centre in downtown, rising above an 8-lane highway, for which @vilenkunnapu and Ain Padrik together with the young Siim received 2nd prize out of 150 entries. @studio_hani_rashid and @liseannecouture_architect won the competition, but sadly it was never built. The Estonians' entry drew heavily from the region's indigenous mythology and symbolism, incorporating, among other elements, an egg, and a fight between an eagle and a snake in the overall scheme (can you see it?). The late 80s and early 90s was a great time for Estonian architects: works by Künnapu & Co and Leonhard Lapin performed well in international competitions (thanks to Finnish colleagues who shared information and helped a lot with submissions!), and even graced the covers of @casabella and @thearchitecturalreview #arhitektuurimuuseum #arhitektuur #architecture #archdaily #archidaily #archilovers #architexture #archistory #estonianarchitecture #architectureinlosangeles #architectureincalifornia #losangelesarchitecture #downtownlosangeles #mythology #andressiim #1980sarchitecture #1980s #mythological #westcoastgateway #ainpadrik #vilenkünnapu #coolarchitecture #architecturelovers #losangeles #unbuilt #unrealised #unbuiltarchitecture #architecturalsection #california #neoconstructivism (at Downtown Los Angeles) https://www.instagram.com/p/B-KRCJ7prSU/?igshid=i45kpe60rjd
