God forgives. Period.

aimlesswander-er asked: Hi Unka Glen! I tried to read an article by [name removed] and I just didn't understand it. I have so much fear that I have committed the unforgivable sin. Can you explain that passage in Hebrews 12:17? I'm over here literally physically shaking under the fear of being irredeemable to a Holy God. I left God and pursued life and sin outside of Him because I was so afraid and did not understand Him. I’ll read a really difficult Bible verse and I’m thrown right back into this absolutely crippling fear. Help me please... this is torture. [edited for length]

Unka Glen answered: I read the article you mentioned, and he made a royal mess of it. So let’s start here: if you’re concerned that you’ve committed the “unforgivable sin”, you haven’t. The only sin that won’t be forgiven is a sin that you refuse to confess, because you’re in a place where you’re unwilling to confess. The Bible is crystal clear: all confessed sin is forgiven (1 John 1:9)

The NIV translation of the verse you mentioned is this: “when Esau wanted to inherit this blessing, he was rejected. Even though he sought the blessing with tears, he could not change what he had done.” 

If you replace the word “blessing” with the word “salvation”, then, oh no! It could mean that you can’t be saved if you do something really bad! But here’s the thing, you don’t get to swap words around in scripture. When you find yourself literally re-writing the Bible to allow for your guilt, it’s time to drop the guilt.

The Bible could not possibly be more clear on this point: everyone sins (Rom. 3:23), and God wants everyone to be saved (1 Tim. 2:4), so if you want salvation from your sins, and God wants it for you, then who do you think can stop that salvation from happening?

Also, I get asked about the “unforgivable sin” a lot. Also, everyone who asks me about the unforgivable sin thinks it’s about sex. 

You feel tortured today because you won’t let God forgive you of your sexual past. Don’t play games and accuse God of not wanting to forgive you. Jesus paid for it all so it could be removed from you as far as the east is from the west (Psa. 103:12). So why are you still holding on to it?

That crippling fear you talked about… it’s not coming from God. The emotions of guilt and fear are the enemy’s attacks designed to hinder your walk with the Lord. Rip all that thinking out by the root and take it to the Lord and pray this prayer: “Lord, take these lies away from me. I want to live in the truth of your grace.”
