Amira took Mariela home, and Megan and Tess took Safiya, Amir, and Emily to the Diving Pelican. Emily’s still a picky eater, so what her moms do is that they allow her to have, for example, a bowl of Mac n cheese or just pasta if she wants, but also encourage her to try a variety of foods once a while to expand her palate. Now Megan helped Emily choose the fish taco, and placed their orders with Aidan, their waiter. While they waited, the family talked and goofed around. Once their food arrived, everyone dug in, and didn't talk for a few minutes. The chatter started again, and Megan goofed around with her kids for a bit. Plus, Tess flirted with Megan, which made Amir groan playfully. "Tess, stop flirting with mom, it's gross." He joked. Tess smiled, and just to tease Amir back she said, "Amir, I can't help it. Your mom is just so beautiful." Amir rolled his eyes but smiled as his mom's eyes lit up at Tess. As cheesy as Tess and his mom were together, it made him happy seeing his mom so happy. Emily laughed at the exchange, and joked with her older sis Safiya how silly Amir was. Safiya nodded and smiled. "He's always been silly, Em." She said.

Livin’ the Lemberos Life

Day 7, Thursday - Bryce & Moab

When we woke up we threw our stuff in the car and headed back to Bryce, straight to the Queen’s/Navajo Combination Loop. It was a nice little morning hike through the canyon and helped us get some steps in before the long drive back to Moab.We had to stop and charge again at Green River but it was worth it to have a full battery for Moab.

This time, we got back to Moab early enough to find a legit campsite. First, we went to check out some campsites along the Colorado River but due to all the recent rain, those sites were closed. We ended up on a scary dirt road on the edge of a canyon before we both decided to turn around. I was very glad that Aidan was driving instead of me.

I wanted to go back to Sand Flats Recreation Area for a site but Aidan was doubtful. We were in luck! It was early enough to grab a great site. After setting up camp, we went straight into town for an early dinner. Little did Aidan know, Irene would be meeting us there!

Irene and her family were in Moab for a vacation and I decided to keep it a secret. I sent Irene my location and she tracked us down to a gift shop to reveal the surprise. The three of us caught up and ate dinner at the Food Truck Park which was right next to Irene's hotel. She told us she had a pool and said we should've brought our swimsuits. Good thing we had the car with all of our stuff in it - benefits of car camping!

The three of us went for a swim and then got to take a shower. What a treat! When Irene's family got back from their dinner, they invited us to join them on their evening of stargazing in Arches. Somehow their car was big enough to fit all 8 of us! While it was a bit cloudy for good stargazing, we had a great time joining the Lemberos family.

Day 8, Friday - Canyonlands

As usual, we started the day by going to the Visitor's Center, this time at Canyonlands. There, they recommended a bunch of shorter walks. First up was, would you believe it, another arch trail - Mesa Arch. This trail gave us an expansive view of the canyon and another quality arch pic.

Next, we did the Upheaval Dome trail which reveals a ~mysterious~ dome shape in the canyon. There are two theories about how it formed - salt and a meteor. Aidan and I are on team meteor.

Whale Rock was next, although I don't think we followed the trail. Instead, we walked out as far as we could until we reached the edge of the canyon. There, we saw white throated swifts dive bombing the canyon. The longer we stayed, the closer they got to us. They flew so fast you could hear them soaring through the air. Something about their speed and proximity while sitting on the edge of the canyon was a little unnerving; however, it was such a special and memorable experience.

We had a picnic bench lunch and then went to the Grand View Point Overlook which gave us 360 degree views of the canyon.

We grabbed some quick tacos at the food trucks before heading back to the Lemberos' hotel for a swim - this time, with all the kids. We caught up about our days and hung out until dark. Aidan and I were looking forward to building a fire and making s'mores back at camp but unfortunately it was extremely windy so we had to take shelter in the tent and eat cold s'mores - if you can even call them that. I got a good whole body exfoliation that night from the sand whipping into our tent.

Day 9, Saturday - Arches & Drive to Denver

On Saturday morning Aidan and I went back to Arches to see the Windows. We were supposed to meet the Lemberos' there but we lost service. Aidan and I began the walk and went off to the primitive trail where Chris found us! We got to do the rest of the walk with the whole group and do a few photoshoots. Don't we blend in well with our adopted fam??

Sadly we had to head back to Denver, but at least we had a concert to look forward to on Sunday. Aidan had a great time at his first Red Rocks show! Eventually, we had to say goodbye. Stay tuned for when I go visit Aidan in London - hopefully next year and hopefully with Irene!

The Best Vacation Ever? Las Vegas, Death Valley & Lake Tahoe, Southwest Roadtrip, 7/5/22 - 7/11/22 (Part 2)

We packed up and began circling the lake counter clockwise.  The top down, DJ Ashlynn spinning tracks like “I Ain’t Worried” by OneRepublic and “Vegas” by Doja Cat, we were having a great time.  Around noon, we ended up at Emerald Bay.

Unfortunately, the parking lots were all full to get to the scenic lookout, so we vowed to come back tomorrow.  Just before completely circling the lake, I made the executive decision to stop at Jalapeno’s Taqueria for lunch.  My tacos were quite good, but the spot received mixed reviews from others.  We stopped at California Burger Company in Heavenly Village to let the kids have some more appealing food, like milkshakes, fries and wings.

Back to the hotel for…you guessed it, more swimming.  They swam in the beautiful lake all afternoon.  They didn’t want to get out.  Dyan and I walked across the street to the grocery store to get Lunchables that they could eat on the beach for dinner.  The kids were hooked on Lake Tahoe.

And then the most unexpected, crazy, amazing event happened.  Live Entertainment was about to kick off.  As the sun was setting, three DJ’s began handing out headphones to everybody on the beach.  They called it a “Silent Dance Party”.  Each DJ played a mix of songs that was broadcast to one of three channel on your headphones.  Each channel had a coordinating color illuminating the headset – red, green or blue.  As the DJ’s played their music, you could tell which channel everybody was listening to by the color of their headset.  The kids LOVED this!  And no surprise, our kids were the first to start dancing – even Aidan was getting into it!  There was a fire dance also dancing to the vibey tunes.

The entertainment didn’t stop there.  Another booth was setup for girls to make their own flower crowns.  Each of the girls spent over an hour building the perfect flower tiara. 

Also no surprise, the kids were the last to finish dancing as the beach party went deep into the night.  Vacation Gold.

7/8/22

Yes, we were up early, because that is what we do on vacations.  Dyan and I get so antsy and just want to go experience stuff!

By 8AM, we were back at Emerald Bay, and being relatively early, we had no problem finding a place to park. 

We took pictures of the scenic overview from multiple viewpoints along the highway.  While the pictures of the water are beautiful, I feel like photographs fail to capture the grandness of the surrounding mountains.

And of course, it wouldn’t be a vacation without a little unplanned adventure.  Leaving the overlook, we saw a sign for “Eagle Falls.”  We’ve never met a waterfall we’ve passed up…  So we parked at the trailhead.  One of the things I love about Dyan is how she puts us on adventures we aren’t really prepared for.  If I bring up any concerns, her standard operating response is, “Don’t worry, we’ll be fine.”  Completely unprepared for any kind of hike, we launched into the forest in tank tops and flip flops.  The hike took us about a mile up the mountain, which is where we were greeted with Vacation Gold. 

Eagle Falls was a long cascading waterfall that emptied into a icy crystal clear pool.  The temps were cranking up, and we were all warm from the hike.  It felt absolutely amazing dipping our legs in the pool.  We sat around the pool for nearly an hour just talking about past vacations and places we wanted to see someday. 

It was such a wonderful hour, with virtually no interruptions from other hikers.  At some point, I bet Brianna $20 she wouldn’t swim across the pool of water.  The water was probably in the 40 degree range, so it wasn’t an easy decision.  But, she decided that $20 to spend at the gift store was just too hard to pass up…

For lunch, we finally got into Riva Grill on the Lake. 

We ha been trying to get reservation the previous two days, but they’d been booked solid.  Everybody’s food was fabulous.  It is a pricey restaurant, but worth every penny for the view, ambiance and food.  Then it was back to the lake for more swimming.

Later in the afternoon, we ubered to downtown South Lake Tahoe in search of a dinner location ahead of The Chainsmokers concert.  What we had failed to realize is that the biggest Pro-Celebrity Golf Tournament of the summer also happened to be in Lake Tahoe on this same weekend.  The restaurants, bars and casinos were packed with celebrities (Miles Teller, Justin Timberlake), athletes (Pat Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Aaron Rodgers) and fans.  We stumbled on a Ace High Saloon and Smokehouse where we waited nearly an hour to get service – it was so busy.  We had a great table by the door so people watching was spectacular.  We ordered the kids non-alcoholic Miami Vice’s, and the bartender almost had a conniption because the frozen drinks take so long to make and he had so many drinks in queus.  He told his wait staff no more frozen drinks after ours.   Which really stinks for all the other people, because they have a huge sign at the front door that advertises amazing frozen beverages!  And since we were sitting by the front door, every other family that entered saw the five kids with a frozen drinks and spurred those kids to want a frozen drink.  There were a lot of unhappy campers in the frozen drink department!  And although the food took over an hour to come out, it was delicious – brisket, pulled pork, smoked chicken, beans, fries and mac & cheese.  We all feasted!

From dinner we walked the three blocks to Harvey’s Lake Tahoe Outdoor Amphitheater.  Since the kids were attending, we didn’t want to be on the “floor” of the arena and get stuck in some kind of mosh pit or rave, so we stuck to the bleachers just behind the floor. 

They were amazing seats!  Brianna and Felicity got Chainsmokers sweatshirts (Ashlynn & Scarlett got Lake Tahoe sweatshirts earlier in the day) and Dyan bought all the kids light up headband bows.

The concert started right at 7PM, which surprised us – no opening act???  And from the first song, “High” to the last song “Closer”, the girls sang and danced.  Some of the highlights of the concert were songs like “Don’t Let Me Down,” “Roses,” “Takeaway,” and “Paris.”  At one point The Chainsmokers called Travis Kelce on stage for “We Are The Champions,” which was a highlight for me.  But the best moment for the girls was the moment the Chainsmokers remixed Taylor Swift’s “Love Story” into their setlist.  The girls went NUTS!!  They are Swifties for life. What an amazing outdoor concert experience!

7/9/22

We slept in….it had been a long night.

Today was a beach day.  It’s what the kids wanted.  After the kids had been swimming a couple hours, Dyan rented them a paddle boat so they could go explore the lake. 

The wind was really howling, which churned up the sand and caused the water to be murky.  But that didn’t stop the kids. 

They paddled for a couple hours while Aidan worked out, and Dyan and I caught some rest on the beach.  The only time we left the beach was for a return visit to Riva Grill, which was just as amazing as our first visit.

We had a picnic on the beach that night for dinner, complete with homemade tropic beverages.

Do sunsets get any more beautiful? There was a wildfire burning close to Lake Tahoe that caused a plume of smoke to run right across the sun creating for the most dramatic shades of red an orange. It was absolutely unreal.

And you guessed it, we finished up the night with an evening swim.

Great Barrier Oasis

On Thursday morning we woke up early and rushed to Wynyard Quarter to catch our ferry to Great Barrier Island. We chose the ferry instead of flights so we could bring our camping gear and food for the whole trip. The ferry was nothing like we envisioned. The majority of the open space was taken up by the carpark, with a single row of seats lining the port and starboard decks. We put on our sweaters and sat on the deck where we were able to enjoy the fresh air and get a tour of the Hauraki Gulf.

We arrived on Great Barrier Island just before 1 PM and picked up our rental car right from the port. From there, we went into the town of Tryphena to rent an additional fishing rod. The mulleted shopkeeper gave us a few tips of things to see on island and we quickly followed his advice. We went straight to the mermaid pools to check them out, but the tides weren’t right so we decided to drive the rest of the way to our campground. 

For the first two nights of our adventure we were staying towards the North end of the Island, near Port Fitzroy, at a place called Orama Oasis. The word oasis is often used as hyperbole, but this was the most accurate depiction of the word that I’ve ever experienced. Our campground was located on a patch of grass overlooking Karaka Bay. The grounds were filled with little villas, a rec center, a big shared kitchen, and private bathrooms with flushable toilets and hot showers. I could’ve stayed there for weeks.

After we toured the grounds, it started pouring. Greg and I unpacked the chilly bin and food in the kitchen while Aidan and David went rock fishing. There were several “work-ups” which is a swarm of birds eating small fish on the surface of the water. This is usually a good sign for fishing, as it means that there are likely a bunch of larger fish feeding below. We saw one of the locals urgently pull his tinney into the water and catch a fish within 4 minutes of getting into the water, on his first cast. 

Aidan and David had similar luck. They came back with three snappers that were big enough to keep! We watched them show off their filleting skills and then quickly set up the tents while there was a break in the rain. Greg fired up the grill and made us some fresh fish burgers for dinner.

We came back to the campsite to find a puddle in my tent! After about twenty minutes of sopping up water, wringing out the towel, and wiping stuff down, the tent was finally habitable again. We were all tired from the long day and passed out pretty early.

On Friday we slept in a bit and went for a hunt along the grounds for kayaks we could rent. There were plenty of kayaks but, to our frustration, none of them were for hire. We decided to go into Port Fitzroy to explore, where we found a lonely port and a burger shop that sold coffee. Up the hill was a general store where the entertainment for the cashier and guests was a brand new Roomba. If the main islands of NZ are a decade behind the US, then GBI is at least 3 decades in the past.

From the store we spotted a sign for a trek with a waterfall and decided to have a go at it. Warrens Loop Track consisted of a path through the bush, canopied by kānuka trees filled in with silver ferns. We made it to a waterfall that was bigger than anticipated, followed the path down to a road, and then to a campground by Rarohara Bay. Greg ran into one of his frisbee friends from Auckland who we continued to encounter throughout the trip. We ate our lunches at the campsite and explored the coast and then went to Whangapoua Beach. The guys embraced their inner child and had a blast bodysurfing in the waves. We walked the length of the quiet beach and found a pool of mini hermit crabs and snails to observe.

Back at camp, the guys went rock fishing while I stayed back to read and relax. I watched a surreal picturesque sunset over the bay and then started to get nervous that the guys weren’t back yet. They had to climb over oyster-lined rocks to get back and the tide was rising. I donned my headlamp and went out to search for them. I didn’t have to go too far before I found them. Luckily they were all fine, but so much for my relaxation! At least they got a few keepers. We were able to make fish tacos with the fresh snapper that were delightful enough to change my mood.

David made us all G&Ts with his fancy new gin and we played too many rounds of President to count. There was much debate over the Kiwi vs. American rules of the game with some negotiation and a little compromise.

As December turns to January and 2020 turns to 2021, it gives us a moment to reflect on the past year and redirect for the new year. 2020 shook everyone’s world with the Covid-19 pandemic and 2021 brings promise of new hope with the rollout of Covid-19 vaccines. For me 2020 started in a very dark place. I was exhausted racing poorly and not having any fun. I went home mid season to rest and recover and hopefully come back to World Championships feeling refreshed and ready to go. In my break I was so focused on getting back to racing I just tried to solve what was on the surface and never took the time to take a step back and find the root of the problem. I returned to Europe as Covid-19 was just starting to spread, I was hopeful that I had rested enough to race well but there was no amount of hope that could have helped me. I struggled for a few more weeks in Italy and Belarus before heading back to Canmore. Back at home everything was slowly shutting down as this unknown threat of Covid-19 was growing. As things closed and we could no longer visit friends and family, I was forced to spend more time with myself and really take a deeper look at how I was feeling. The spring and early summer was hard. I had to do a lot of work on myself. I needed to figure out not only what I wanted and what I needed to get where I wanted but also how to speak up for myself and my needs. This pause created a lot of isolation for everyone, but it gave me the chance to be free from distractions and things to procrastinate with. I am not done working on myself, but I now know better who I am and what I need to make me happy. Everyday is different, some are more challenging than others, but I know have a better idea of what I need and where I am going. This fall brought the return to snow and then it flowed into racing. The beginning of the season was a mystery, but I was so happy and excited to be on the start line. The first trimester brought many positives and a few more lessons. As the clock ticked on and the calendar flipped over, I am hoping to bring my lessons from 2020 into 2021, to make time for the things and activities I need so I can make it possible to show up energized, strong, and happy.

With the first trimester over, our team’s Christmas camp gave me the opportunity to reconnect with the ongoing lessons from the spring to make sure I started the new year energized. In our lovely little apartments at the Tillga Gluck, I was able to relax and rejuvenate. The team all got to cook our own meals, Aidan and I tried to make as many items as we could that you would not find at a German/Austrian/Italian restaurant. This included stir fry, curry with naan, tacos, and burgers. Even without an oven I tried to get some “baking” in which included jelly doughnuts, churros for our team Secret Santa gift exchange and some eggnog. I found the time to catch up virtually with family as well as friends, for once I wasn’t the only one attending Christmas virtually. To help myself understand my calculus course better, I took the time to refresh some of my math knowledge by watching lots of youtube tutorials. I also took to youtube to try and learn how to cut hair to clean up the mop on Aidan’s head, good thing hair always grows back.  As for outdoor activities, Obertilliach gave us the perfect playground, during our stay we got two giant dumps over 1m to add to the 3m they had when we arrived. This gave us plenty of ski trails for our long skis, we didn’t even manage to ski to the end of the grooming! I got out sledding a couple of times, one time from the top of the gondola. Aidan, Nadia, Adam, and I traded our cross-country skis one day for a lovely ski tour, we got a perfect blue bird day with awesome skiing. Of course, we also did so solid training which included shooting, skiing, intensity, and strength. It was nice to be in a quiet hotel, in a quiet town and have some space and time to breath. Not every day was perfect, I had to work through the residual stress from the first 4 weeks of racing and the stress of catching up all the small things I let slide during those weeks. All in all, I would say the two weeks were well spent and I feel refreshed and excited to get back to racing this Friday. 2020 wasn’t the easiest year but I learnt a lot and I look forward to continue growing and learning in 2021!
