Rams on verge of NFC West title after spectacular INT by Ahkello Witherspoon
The Los Angeles Rams will play for the NFC West title next week, if they don't clinch it this weekend — or Monday night — in one of the most complicated ways possible.
The Rams moved within a heartbeat of the NFC West title on Saturday with a 13-9 win over the Arizona Cardinals, improving their record to 10-6 and keeping them a game ahead of the 9-7 Seattle Seahawks. It was L.A.'s fifth straight win.
The game came down to one final drive, in which the Cardinals had plenty of time to score a touchdown and take the lead. They got all the way to Los Angeles' 5-yard line, when a Kyler Murray pass hit tight end Trey McBride in the helmet.
Rams cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon laid all the way out to catch the deflection and all but seal the game. The play was reviewed to see if Witherspoon came down with the ball and the ruling of an interception was upheld, though the Rams did need to do some pushing after they were given the ball at the 1-yard line.
The Seahawks play the Rams in Week 18. If Los Angeles wins, the division crown is L.A.'s. If Seattle wins, well, let's get into that.
Should the Seahawks beat the Rams in Week 18, both teams would be 10-7 and the division title would come down to tiebreakers. The first tiebreaker: head-to-head, where the teams would be even (the Rams beat the Seahawks in Week 9). Second tiebreaker: divisional record, where they would be even. Third tiebreaker: record against common opponents, even. Fourth tiebreaker: conference record, even.

It wasn’t easy, but the Los Angeles Rams kept their playoff hopes alive after Saturday’s victory over the Arizona Cardinals 13-9.
Los Angeles took a 10-0 lead at the half after running. Kyren Williams scored a 1-yard touchdown run, followed by Joshua Karty’s 53-yard field goal with 32 seconds left in the 2nd quarter. The Cardinals had no answers in the first half.
In the 3rd quarter, the Cardinals chewed up 6 minutes and 29 seconds in their first drive. Cardinals tight end Trey McBride scored a one-yard touchdown catch, putting the Cardinals on the board 10-6 with a missed extra point. McBride caught his 98th reception this season, his first touchdown. Arizona had the ball for over 12 minutes in the 3rd quarter.
Chris Ryland kicked a 28-yard field goal at the beginning of the 4th quarter to pull them within one of the Rams; it wasn’t too long before Karty kicked a 25-yard field goal to extend the Rams’ lead 13-9.
Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray drove to the Rams' 40-yard line with 3:14 left in the game. Murray threw a deep pass intended for Marvin Harrison Jr. but was intercepted by Rams’ Karmen Kitchens.
However, the Rams couldn’t capitalize on the turnover and went three and out, giving the Cardinals another chance.
Arizona took advantage of the three-and-out and drove the ball to Los Angeles's 5-yard line with 28 seconds left. Kyler Murray threw a pass to Trey McBride, which bounced off his hands and landed in the hands of Rams’ cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon, keeping the Rams' playoff hopes alive and making the Cardinals lose their fifth game of their last six.
Despite the two interceptions, Kyler Murray did throw for 321 yards and one touchdown, completing 33 of his 48 passes. Trey McBride caught 12 passes for 123 yards and one touchdown, and Marvin Harrison Jr. snagged six for 96 yards.
James Conner gained 4 yards in 4 carries before leaving the game with a knee injury. Michael Carter filled the void, carrying the ball 13 times for 70 yards.
Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford completed 17 of 32 passes for 189 yards. Wide receiver Puka Nacua caught 10 passes for 129 yards, while Kyren Williams had the Rams’ only touchdown, with 56 yards in 13 carries and three catches for 16 yards.
The Rams will host their final regular season home game against the Seahawks for the battle of the NFC West title, while the Cardinals will try to have some pride to end the season as they host the 49ers for their final home game of the year.

Los Angeles Rams' 2024 Veteran Free Agent is Already a Solidified Leader At Training Camp
Tre’Davious White was a risky free agent signing for the Los Angeles Rams. The former All-Pro cornerback has missed 21 games over his last three seasons, playing in just 10 games in the last two seasons combined. The Rams didn’t have to opt for White. The cornerback had plenty of good options to choose from. They could have gone back to a familiar face and re-signed Ahkello Witherspoon. But the…

[ad_1] The Rams’ cornerback group is full of youth and potential, from Cobie Durant down to rookie Tre Tomlinson. Ahkello Witherspoon added a nice dash of veteran experience when the Rams signed him, but there probably isn’t a cornerback room in the NFL that’s younger than Los Angeles’.As such, there’s a lot of room for movement. The Rams could keep as many as six or seven corners this year and Jordan Jones is making the case to be one of them. The undrafted rookie out of Rhode Island played well in his preseason debut against the Chargers on Saturday night, leading the team with five tackles and constantly finding himself around the ball.He wasn’t perfect in coverage, allowing seven catches for 65 yards, but Jones was often close enough to the receiver to make the tackle shortly after the reception was made. That’s a good sign for a cornerback, even if he’s allowing receptions. He showed off his play recognition on this screen pass, which he blew up for a loss of yardage.Jones’ play caught the attention of Raheem Morris, who noted his impressive play with the first unit on defense – a group that included other potential starters such as Russ Yeast, Quentin Lake, Michael Hoecht and Byron Young.“Jordan had a chance to go out there with the first group the other night and really did a nice job,” Morris said. “He made some mistakes, he made some really good tackles, he ran around, he played fast, and I look forward to him making the next step in this next game as well.”That quote stemmed from a question about the star position, which is where Jalen Ramsey played for the last few years. The star is the defender who lines up in the slot, but he can also play outside cornerback when needed, too.Jones played there on Saturday and has lined up in the slot throughout the summer, adding some depth behind Durant. The same goes for Shaun Jolly, while Tanner Ingle and Yeast have also gotten opportunities in the slot. For now, it sounds like Jones is behind Jolly on the depth chart, but if he continues to impress in the preseason, he could earn himself a spot on the 53-man roster as the sixth or seventh cornerback.“Cobie’s been out going out with the ones most of the time. We’ve seen a lot of Shaun Jolly out there with the twos and sometimes mixed in with the ones based on rotations of the day, so to speak,” Morris said. “And then that provided days when you gave Cobie a rest or Jolly due to a small tweak or setback. And then you got guys like Jordan Jones in there. You’ve been able to see Tanner Ingle go in there, and you’ve seen a bunch of different guys bounce around, a little bit of Russ in walk-through. So when you watch those guys go out and you’re developing all these guys that play inside, you’re just increasing their knowledge base.”No one had a higher tackle grade for the Rams on Saturday than Jones, which is where he really stood out. He’s a physical defender, which is exactly what you need to be in order to play the star position. Jones just needs to improve in coverage, which we’ll hopefully see this weekend against the Raiders. But there’s no doubt he’s a player to watch as we approach the start of the season.Story originally appeared on Rams Wire [ad_2] Source link
