Just finished reading In The Margins. It was so beautiful, so well written. You always manage to make me fall for Yoongi in every fic you write. Road to you, Like butter, Countermelody, Matchmaker... He might be my favorite member to read honestly. I have a question about this story. So I think it was in the second or third chapter, where OC and Yoongi were going over the new ending for the story and Yoongi said Jimin was jealous of what was keeping them apart. What did he mean by that? Can you explain more about Jimin and Taehyung’s relationship? Or maybe I should say Yoongi and his friend’s relationship. Were they in love? Did Taehyung die at the end? I am guessing Yoongi’s friend did die at the end, at least that’s what I understood from the final paragraph where he said “he left”. Was Yoongi in love with him? Was Yoongi Jimin in the story? Sorry if I missed the obvious signs, I was just curious and wanted to know more. I seriously love your writing and cannot wait for your next works!
Ahh, hello!! Thank you so much for your kind, kind words! Trying to do our precious Yoongi justice!
Thanks so much for reading In the Margins! And thank you so much for reaching out! I could talk about this story for the rest of my life lol. I was really inspired by the song Dear My Friend and brought elements of the lyrics into the story. In the Margins is set in an AU where Yoongi is a food critic who secretly writes a novel to process a major fork in the road in an old friendship. In Yoongi's novel, Jimin and Taehyung are stand-ins for Yoongi and his friend (who is unknown to the Reader, but is known to Jungkook). Jimin represents Yoongi, and Taehyung represents this friend. More details (with some spoilers) after the cut! (trigger warning: discussion of heavy drug use)
In the story, Yoongi creates Jimin and Taehyung, two musicians who are starting out together, Taehyung gets caught up with a completely different crowd and gets addicted to heroin (I talk more about the specifics of that on here).
Jimin is jealous of this addiction to heroin. He's jealous that Taehyung abandoned the plans they had together, especially for something so destructive. Through writing the story, Yoongi realizes this is what he feels for his friend -- he's not angry, but rather, deeply hurt that his friend chose a different life over him. The way that Yoongi rewrites the ending is meant to symbolize Yoongi starting to understand that by that point, his friend wasn't really choosing to leave him, but was rather lost to something else in choosing the drug over him. In the end, Yoongi begins to make peace with that.
I leave "he left" open to interpretation. For me, the friend does die, but the friend could also just be "dead" to Yoongi in that he's no longer a part of his life. Their relationship is also up to interpretation. For me, it is a platonic friendship, but it could very well have been romantic. I wanted to leave those aspects open because the story is a more about Yoongi making peace with what has happened, not needing concrete answers anymore, and opening his life up to something new, just as the Reader does.
Thank you so much for engaging in the story so deeply! I am so touched that you enjoyed it, and I'm always so excited to share even more of the worlds that surround these stories. Thanks for giving me a chance to jump back into that world with you!
