Maharashtra’s opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) allies Congress-Shiv Sena-UBT-Nationalist Congress Party-SP on Wednesday finalised their respective candidates for 85 seats each — totalling 255 out of the total 288 — after hectic deliberations.

Caretaker Role for Shinde 

Chief Minister Shinde, who leads a faction of the Shiv Sena aligned with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), is expected to stay on in a caretaker capacity until clarity emerges on the state’s political landscape. This arrangement would ensure continuity in governance and prevent administrative paralysis during the transition. 

Political analysts believe this move aligns with the central government’s strategy to avoid public backlash that often accompanies the imposition of President’s Rule. “Keeping Shinde in a caretaker role signals stability and avoids the perception of central overreach in state affairs,” said political commentator Rajiv Deshpande. 

Legal Challenges and Coalition Strain 

The Shinde-led government has been under strain following legal challenges to his leadership after his split from the original Shiv Sena headed by Uddhav Thackeray. The Supreme Court is yet to deliver its verdict on the disqualification petitions against Shinde and other rebel MLAs, a decision that could have significant repercussions for the government’s legitimacy. 

Adding to the complexity is the growing discord within the coalition. Reports suggest tensions between the BJP and Shinde’s Shiv Sena faction, with some BJP leaders expressing dissatisfaction over governance issues. 

Opposition’s Stand 

Meanwhile, the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), comprising the Shiv Sena (UBT), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), and Congress, has been pressuring for a floor test to prove the government’s majority. They argue that the ruling coalition no longer enjoys the confidence of the assembly.

As the political uncertainty persists, all eyes are on the Supreme Court's verdict and the strategies employed by the BJP-led central government.
