Watching detour is such an emotional roller coaster because ohhh cute flirty telepathy in the car and LOOK Mulder running off to conjure up a case out of thin air and then actually confirms that he and Scully communicate telepathically.

Sooo cute, but then Scully brings over wine and cheese and makes a suggestive comment about male and female agents consorting in a hotel room and Mulder's telepathy short-circuits and he runs off to "check something out" but he still totally wants to build a tower with office furniture because she insulted his communication skills?

Some half-mumbled half-telepathic communication in the forest and then Mulder wants them to get naked and share a sleeping bag, to which Scully responds in a flirty manner before launching straight into a conversation about death and dying and her cancer, Mulder makes a joke, she makes a joke, they talk about the Flintstones and boobs and moth men, and then Mulder doesn't want to wrestle and what ensues is the cutest kind of bullshit with his head in Scully's lap, and she's holding him and singing about a bullfrog and they're just simply too adorable and in love for words.

And then she falls into a hole and he jumps after her instead of getting help as any sane person would and they try to macgyver their way out by building a tower of bodies??? And it ends with him rushing to the motel where she might be in danger, but she's fine and he's relieved. They're so good at being in love. Nobody does it like them, honestly.

You both already knew each other when it all started

"Hey, do you have any gum?”

"Gum?" You glance at your soldier friend.

"Yeah, I like to chew on them. Do you have any?”

"Uh... no sorry." But you checked on your pockets anyway. Who knows? Maybe you actually have it. Before you can even lift your head a breeze past you.

A breeze? In the middle of the hall where no windows open?

You glance at your side, seeing what is left of your friend on the ground, his throat ripped open as he choked on his own blood and died in mere seconds. You stared at him as his lifeless body lay down motionless.

"I was talking to him.”

"Pas désolé, he is pretty much dead now."

You glance at him unimpressed while he stared up at you with a smile, a sweet sickening one, making you feel annoyed even more. His bloody blades disappearing behind his wrists.

"You need to stop your little visits. They will notice our talks one day. And it's not gonna be pretty for both of us.”

“We never agreed it would be. Qui a dit que ça m'intéressait de toute façon.” He grinned at you as he connected his hands behind his back.

How do you two know each other? Well, you two met when you started to work for Eden, seemingly. You're an agent observing Eden's work and informing your superiors. That's it. That was your job. Being a spy. Dangerous you need to say. Thankfully, if someone notices your act, you know how to fight.

It wasn't long before the assassin and spy met in unfortunate circumstances. Forcing you to fight side by side in a station where both of you are in grave danger. It was in the past now. Either you regret meeting him or not… you weren’t sure.... yet

After that day, he didn't seem to forget about you. Or your purpose. It looks like you managed to catch his attention from the first moments.

He started to show his face whenever he could to the point you can't ignore anymore.

You did get irritated by that a lot of the time, especially in the beginning. But now you just… get used to it? You don’t know. It’s not like he listened when you told him to go.

Thankfully whenever he kills your ‘comrades’ he helps you to not get caught because of his reckless actions? You actually started to think he's doing it on purpose too. Just to stay a bit longer and interact with you more.

You don’t actually care who he kills. You just want him to not ruin your cover.

But when you start to notice every person you talk to starts to disappear or end up dead? You start to worry. Like a lot. How can you not? Your life is on the line.

You know it was him doing it. But you just didn't get why. You are more than capable of handling yourself.

What was he thibking doing all that? Risking your whole mission- YOUR life- To get you caught? There need to be more to it. There is something really wrong with him…

And you were proven right when you found one of your agent friends covered in his own blood, near him only stood and stared Bullfrog while he slowly... died. Like he wanted to teach him a lesson in his own mind.

His blades were bloody. There was something horrible the way he just… stared. What shocked you even more was what he uttered out to the body laying motionless, to the soulless eyes.

“No one… no one can take her away...” he slowly wiped the blood from his mouth.

Your eyes widen with that. How does a normal person would act in this situation? Run away for their life? Scream? Cry? Grow in anger? Probably. But you were a skilled agent. You stepped inside, even you couldn't belive how calm you were, he quickly got aware of your presence and tilted his head with a smirk. He never hid that glint in his eyes.

“Bonjour, mon lumière. How was your day? Good I hope?”

You shook your head, and went straigh to the point, “What have you done?” It was the only thing you could let out at the moment. A lot of things went trhough in your head but you just stood there and actually hoped to hear a manageable answer?

He opened his arms towards you and approached, he actually believed in what he said, “He was going to get in between like all the others. I couldn’t let that happen.”

The more he came closer the more you stepped back, you shook your head, “You are not even making any sense. You are sick, you are—“

You yelled in pain and dropped down on your knees before you could even put up a fight to get away. He cut your ankles. Not actually cut them in two but that still hurted like hell. You hissed and suck in a breath. You grimiced and tighten your fist. You are not going to show any weakness to him.

You panted in pain as he held you in his arms, caressing your back. You growled in anger on his shoulder, wiggling in his strong hold, trying to get away but he didn't even move an inch and continued holding you tightly, not very affected. How could he be so strong?

“Don’t worry, ma vie. You will soon understand that I’m freeing you from the burden of working under an organization as vile as Eden. You’ll be at peace with me. I promise." He caressed your head ‘lovingly’. “Nous serons ensemble pour toujours.”

Your angry yell muffled in his chest. As his eyes stared blankly into space with a smile on his lips.

Everything got so much worse after that...

Introducing a side-story to my Rayman Chibi AU: Dolphins with Laser Eyes!

"Dolphins with Laser Eyes" is a parody series based on "Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix". This story changes things to retell the original in a much more humorous way while also changing the characters a bit to be more in-line with their game counterparts and follows the story of the S.P.I.R.I.T. Farts comprising of Dolph "Dolphin" Laserhawk, his adopted sister Jade, their uncle and caretaker Pey'j, the not-so-secret agent Alex Taylor (alias "Agent Hot Wheels"), and his longest-running pupil Agent Bullfrog. They're out to stop Eden, the evil organization that stripped America of its freedom, but not before getting into some of the weird shenanigans without them, what with an apocalypse happening simultaneously and whatnot. They're also joined by Ramon "Rayman" le Grand, Eden's poster-boy and a former TV star and cafe owner who got bored of his lifestyle and wanted to get out more often.

Characters:

Dolph "Dolphin" Laserhawk: The main character of the story. Like his original iteration, he was used by Eden as a weapon instead of being treated more humanly, so he quit. Some traumatizing stuff happens to him, like the time he thought he found someone who cared about him, but it turned out that he was betrayed by him and he nearly got caught... and then he ended up running into a forest and going into hiding there. Now he's the adopted brother and nephew of Jade and Pey'j respectively, but ever since he rediscovered his powers and some forces sent by Eden attacked their home, they all agreed to go back to the city to fight Eden and to protect everything they loved, even going so far as to meet a speed-controlling agent and his "pet" frog, who asked if they could take on the evil forces head-on. Though Dolph was a bit more hesitant on accepting Agent Hot Wheels's offer, seeing as he reminded him of a familiar yet horrifying figure, he agreed alongside Jade and Pey'j, and the three became part of the S.P.I.R.I.T. Farts program. The only main difference from his first counterpart? Well, he expected the whole thing to be his story, but uhh... well, with so much else going on, he's much more confused than scared of what is even happening around him.

Ramon "Rayman" le Grand: He's the star of the show, the reason you tune into Eden's channel, the wacky thingy who makes everyone smile... at least, that's what Eden wanted him to be. Not one person can outmatch his uniqueness due to his strange body and his most charming charisma. The ladies love him, people at his bar love him, seemingly everyone loves him... everyone except those who are against Eden as a whole. Rayman, who notices this, wants to achieve the impossible: to make everyone, even his greatest enemies, happy, so he escapes, leaving his luxurious life behind... only to be jumped by a random angry mob. And then he accidentally jumps onto the S.P.I.R.I.T. Farts' car. And then they jump on him- wow, poor guy, am I right? Despite this, they decide to keep him around as their "hostage", but you know what? To him, it felt like it was the greatest honor he's ever had; in a pretty twisted way, he doesn't feel so... alone anymore...

Alex "Hot Wheels" Taylor: A middle-aged man and yet a fit special agent who works for S.P.I.R.I.T., who, with his trusty remote, has the ability to manipulate one's perception of speed and time with the push of a button, and who mentors and supervises the Farts. He even used to be a Fart himself; apparently, he got accused of a crime he didn't do, but the former director of S.P.I.R.I.T. rescued him and offered him a chance of redemption. Since then, he's sympathized for the group and especially despises Sarah Fisher for... some reason. Also he's... not dating Dolph? Like, at all? I dunno, I was looking through the characters' debut games and apparently he's from this game called "The Crew" where he speeds through roads with cars and worked for some lady to take down a corrupted FBI guy and Taylor's brother's murderer to clear his name, so I figured I might let him be more of a good guy but keep some of his negative traits both in the game and in the show. You can't really stop me because he wasn't always the bad guy. Just like how Rayman wasn't always a bad guy himself.

Balak "Bullfrog": An aspiring Fart with great reflexes and a utility of weapons on his belt. He claims to be the last of his creed, a group of rebelling assassins who used to work for Eden and guarded them with whatever chances they've got (though it was joked by the higher-ups of S.P.I.R.I.T. that he used to be more or less of just a fanboy). He was eventually taken in by Alex after accidentally getting himself trapped in a pet shop, though not before Alex paid to "adopt" him (he sensed that Bullfrog wasn't an ordinary frog, especially since he was literally clothed in front of the guy). Afterwards, he initially decided to play friendly towards the guy and reluctantly help him on his missions, but after realizing the truth, that being that Eden was the one to cause the apocalypse in the first place, he fully trusted Alex and the two became a crime-fighting duo ever since.

Jade "Shauni" Laserhawk: Dolph's adopted younger sister who took him in after finding him lying down unconscious by a brook she goes to to do yoga (because originally I wanted to put in "meditate", but apparently I looked up "is yoga a form of meditation?" and the internet said "no". The internet doesn't lie to me like that. Unless it's AI). Optimistic, headstrong, and an admittedly talented artist, she made sure she gave him the best their home had to offer, and the two siblings had fun hanging out with each other, whether it be practicing yoga or finding beautiful things in nature to look at and appreciate. She really cares about Dolph and is concerned about him fighting battles by himself without her help, so much so that when he reawakened his powers and deemed himself too dangerous to her and Pey'j, or when the evil forces attacked their home and he wanted to encounter Eden all alone, she was the first to convince him that he doesn't need to fight his battles without her because of how close of a family they were. After running into Agent Hot Wheels and Agent Bullfrog while on their way to Eden, Jade was eagerly the first one to agree upon the offer. Unfortunately, she was the only one who didn't have superhuman strength nor a powerful weapon, so S.P.I.R.I.T. gave her a mechanical staff to aid her in her fights. Why she's this ecstatic to take opportunities that involved taking down Eden and other evil forces is unknown to others, but it had been hinted that she used to work for them when she was just a teenager, only to soon catch onto Eden's evil ways and flee back to her home to tell Pey'j and the others about her realization.

Pey'j "Wild Boar" Laserhawk: The proud uncle and caretaker of the Laserhawk siblings. Despite having great amounts of strength, Pey'j is both brawn and brain, having built the house they lived in, several vehicles they could use to drive around the forest, and even repairing and reviving Dolph from his unconsciousness. He too cares about his adopted nephew being too stubborn to let him and Jade fight his battles with him, but he especially cared about Jade and her own safety more, not only because she's the only one in the family who can't fight unarmed, but also because he's raised her much longer than her brother, having done so ever since she was a little girl. As such, he considers her "his favorite child" and is a lot more hesitant on how she cares for Dolph, even when she was willing to help take Eden down with him, since he knows that she's putting herself in grave danger. Really though, the main reason why he even came with his niece and nephew to stop Eden in the first place was because he wanted to protect the former and felt like the latter would protect himself, what with the cyborg parts on him and all. Additionally, he's a bit more reclusive towards others, mostly towards those who seem like they're gonna hurt his kids. For example, when they first met Agent Hot Wheels and Agent Bullfrog, he thought that the two were gonna take them away to some prison run by Eden. Even after being explained to him that the agents were working for a rebel force against the government, he was still hesitant to trust them until Jade agreed to help, causing him to have a brief argument with her about the idea. He soon agreed, albeit reluctantly since now he has to look after her more constantly, and was soon a member of the rookie tier of S.P.I.R.I.T., the Farts.

Conclusion

And so ends the premise and character introductions for "Dolphins with Laser Eyes"! Really hope to draw more of this side-story, maybe play around with the art-style to get that half-serious, half-parody look I'm going for, but for now, I'll be seeing y'all soon. Take care!

It wasn't long before the assassin and spy met in unfortunate circumstances. Forcing you to fight side by side in a station where both of you are in grave danger. It was in the past now. Either you regret meeting him or not… you weren’t sure.... yet

After that day, he didn't seem to forget about you. Or your purpose. It looks like you managed to catch his attention from the first moments.

He started to show his face whenever he could to the point you can't ignore anymore.

You did get irritated by that a lot of the time, especially in the beginning. But now you just… get used to it? You don’t know. It’s not like he listened when you told him to go.

Thankfully whenever he kills your ‘comrades’ he helps you to not get caught because of his reckless actions? You actually started to think he's doing it on purpose too. Just to stay a bit longer and interact with you more.

You don’t actually care who he kills. You just want him to not ruin your cover.

But when you start to notice every person you talk to starts to disappear or end up dead? You start to worry. Like a lot. How can you not? Your life is on the line.

You know it was him doing it. But you just didn't get why. You are more than capable of handling yourself.

What was he thibking doing all that? Risking your whole mission- YOUR life- To get you caught? There need to be more to it. There is something really wrong with him…

And you were proven right when you found one of your agent friends covered in his own blood, near him only stood and stared Bullfrog while he slowly... died. Like he wanted to teach him a lesson in his own mind.

His blades were bloody. There was something horrible the way he just… stared. What shocked you even more was what he uttered out to the body laying motionless, to the soulless eyes.

“No one… no one can take her away...” he slowly wiped the blood from his mouth.

Your eyes widen with that. How does a normal person would act in this situation? Run away for their life? Scream? Cry? Grow in anger? Probably. But you were a skilled agent. You stepped inside, even you couldn't belive how calm you were, he quickly got aware of your presence and tilted his head with a smirk. He never hid that glint in his eyes.

“Bonjour, mon lumière. How was your day? Good I hope?”

You shook your head, and went straigh to the point, “What have you done?” It was the only thing you could let out at the moment. A lot of things went trhough in your head but you just stood there and actually hoped to hear a manageable answer?

He opened his arms towards you and approached, he actually believed in what he said, “He was going to get in between like all the others. I couldn’t let that happen.”

The more he came closer the more you stepped back, you shook your head, “You are not even making any sense. You are sick, you are—“

You yelled in pain and dropped down on your knees before you could even put up a fight to get away. He cut your ankles. Not actually cut them in two but that still hurted like hell. You hissed and suck in a breath. You grimiced and tighten your fist. You are not going to show any weakness to him.

You panted in pain as he held you in his arms, caressing your back. You growled in anger on his shoulder, wiggling in his strong hold, trying to get away but he didn't even move an inch and continued holding you tightly, not very affected. How could he be so strong?

“Don’t worry, ma vie. You will soon understand that I’m freeing you from the burden of working under an organization as vile as Eden. You’ll be at peace with me. I promise." He caressed your head ‘lovingly’. “Nous serons ensemble pour toujours.”

Your angry yell muffled in his chest. As his eyes stared blankly into space with a smile on his lips.

Everything got so much worse after that...

So I'm trying to make a Captain Laserhawk joke (turned kinda serious?) AU where the characters lean more into their game counterparts in looks, personalities, and even stories (except for Dolph because he doesn't have a game counterpart to speak of, so he's the guy who literally has no real idea on what's goin on x11) (and I guess Bullfrog's left to be untouched because he's fine) while the comedy's also cranked up a lot more, and I've already made a post explaining the main cast, but upon doing my research on how to understand the source source material more through people's posts, I stumbled upon your "Orphans of Eden" AU and discovered certain parallels between it and my AU:

Jade and Pey'j find Dolph unconscious in the past and decide to fix him up and treat him like family. This leads to Dolph and Jade forming a nice sibling bond (and also Pey'j is much more like a caring, sane uncle in both AUs)

Rayman works for the good guys as a double agent of sorts and doesn't get guns out of nowhere? •o• (although I guess the main difference is that in your AU he actually gets to do stuff while in my AU he's just some mostly pacifist guy who doesn't want to totally ruin his reputation but he still tags along because Bullfrog gave him some food so now he trusts the gang now even though he's more conflicted with their beliefs lol)

Hmm, what else, what else, uhh... I guess Alex didn't show up before Jade and Pey'j found Dolph, so that's a bonus..! (Though, in my AU, Dolph still went through whatever happened in episode 1 of the series but it's like... a different guy we don't know of yet while Alex is working in this organization called "S.P.I.R.I.T." as an agent mentoring rookie agents and stuff because of his backstory in "The Crew")

And I think that's about it. I really like the concept of your AU and I hope that mine's about on par with yours :D

Nice! it's always fun to see people come up with alternate universe concepts ^-^ It's nice to imagine a more playful version of CLH. It feels a little 'Super Smash bros'-y, which fits Rayman's personality at the very least and allows characters like Jade and Alex to be a bit more relaxed. If anything it's an opportunity to add more game elements from different Ubisoft properties. How about a nod to Valiant Hearts, Tonic Trouble or Child of Light?

I like how Alex and Bullfrog team up too. That's a unique idea. It would be interesting to see how their very different perspectives on life affect how they interact, what their moral standings are and how those contrast one another.

I will say I found it really distracting how the characters were called 'Farts' over and over. I'm sure it's a reference to something but it made it really hard to take the plotlines of the characters seriously, and any serious aspects of their backstories (being used as a tool of Eden, getting into fights, death of families and friends) were undermined by its inclusion.

I'm glad you like Orphans of Eden! I really need to draw more stuff for it. I wanted to draw some of the orphan hybrids Jade, Pey'j and Dolph are caring for XD

Welp, instead of actually watching Captain Laserhawk itself, I went and scoured through your posts to find a way to fix my AU. I know. Weird thing to do considering what you post. But you've gone and did your job, woman! So here's some things that I looked into because I still tried to take your criticism to do more research on the show and its themes and such (please let me know if I've gotten even one thing wrong):

Dolph barely had a proper childhood and was mainly treated as a weapon ever since he was a teenager, maybe even younger than that. It wasn't until Alex broke him out and… well… y'know… before abandoning him later on.

With Jade (since my AU involves combining the looks and personalities of the characters from their original games and CLH), her CLH personality… clashes with her BG&E counterpart, having more of an extroverted personality and yet being more inexperienced with some things in comparison to BG&E Jade who, while more introverted, has more experience with fighting and such. I'm not sure if I can work with this (I mean, as an ambivert, I'm pretty sure I'm aware of that term), both Jades have been, from what I've read, night and day.

Sarah and Bullfrog are meant to be parallels to each other(?)

According to a post you made, there are also biblical symbolisms that aren't just "America is Eden now, suck it". Alex's betrayal to Dolph is reminiscent of Judas betraying Jesus, and the talk Rayman and Bullfrog had has some resemblance to the forbidden fruit of knowledge. There could be more, but that's all I got from you.

Rayman was meant to be a mascot made for children. You mentioned that Dolph and Alex made him lose his job, but as of writing this, I never looked so deep into that, though from what I presume, maybe it was something not-kid-friendly they did? I also found out that Dolph and Alex encountered NijiRed at some point, so did they lead to the scene where Rayman snapped at the guy? There was a wasteland war at some point and a few of the characters lost their biological parents there O_O

In a reblog you made, I discovered that my AU is actually somewhat similar to Raye's "Orphans of Eden AU" (without the orphans ofc). Jade and Dolph being adopted siblings, Rayman being a double agent of sorts to help the good guys while struggling to keep his job, Pey'j… not… actually being weird towards Jade… there could be more parallels, but it's weird yet interesting that I've made my AU to have some of OoE's elements.

I cannot stress enough that if you’re gonna make a CLH au that’s specifically meant as a parody of CLH, you really should watch it (or change it where it’s not a parody but still comedy or whatever). But if you won’t watch CLH, I at least suggest you read @quixtrix posts regarding the show because I’m just one person with my own biases and thus I’ve missed details

Im assuming Alex isn’t romantically involved with Dolph in the au still? You should probably give the pair a deeper connection since Alex ends up sleeping with Pagan and Dolph catching them is a significant moment

Honestly get it, doesn’t exactly help that Jade has some of the crappest writing in the show. It just depends which version of her you’d prefer exploring (same with Pey’J)

That post is just a theory on Bullfrog’s possible backstory due to him being an Assassin and Sarah being a Templar. There’s stuff that’s likely not going to happen in the actual second season (Bullfrog and Sarah’s mothers being important characters the most likely)

Yep, there’s also themes criticising late stage capitalism and destructive ideologies (such as Alex’s belief in “burning it all to the ground”)

Oh my god, thank you so much! It's really... strange to have people ask me stuff that i made in an autism-fused fever dream.

Basically, (and a huge trigger warning for cults and child soldier shenanagans) in this AU, the good news is that the Assassins Order is still alive! Yay yippee yahoo! Bad news is that one sect of it, specifically the sect that this AU's Bullfrog is in... is a full-blown cult...

Bullfrog was brought into the sect at a very early age, after being rejected by Eden's military program, and infused him with the desire to both protect his brothers and sisters and to destroy Eden or die trying.

His upbringing by the cult has made him extremely religious, incredibly skilled at stealth and martial combat - how else are you supposed to destroy Eden after all, loyal to a fault, and overwhelmingly anti-social and wary of everyone outside the cult, to the point where he constantly wears a hood over his head so that no outsiders can see his face.

So, when the cult leaves him to die in order to gain a specific macguffin that they believe could summon their god (i dunno man i haven't ironed out the details), leaves Bullfrog in a more emotionally stunted way than he is in the OG Laserhawk.

Hopefully one particular thingimajig can help him heal from that..

I know you know cause its your fic but I’m so curious on how long bullfrog’s known about his future true love lunar. Do you think he tells comrades “I’ve seen my future love and they are the greatest thing that will happen to me.” Do you think he brags? Do you think Sarah is aware he is bragging about a future lover but is not aware of who it is? Oh god what if she is?

Bullfrog is sweet and kind, but he’s not naive. He’s the only one left standing twice over and that would not be the case if he was careless and it’s pretty clear they all knew Fisher was constantly watching them otherwise they would have given her up after capture. I’m playing it that he’s never brought it up to any of the Ghosts before.

But now that he’s a free agent? 👀

As for how long? Well I’m keeping that close for now.

How to write a query letter:

All right, here's some practical advice on finding an agent from an indie author. (I do love some irony.)

I decided to go indie after hearing several horror stories from trad-published authors. Zero editing of their book before being published; having an editor get super excited about their work and buy it only to have that editor leave and and the new one be really unexcited about their work; having a publisher be super excited about their work only for the publisher to go under before they can actually go to print and their rights to their book be part of the IP that gets swallowed up in the bankruptcy, etc.

But when I first started writing, trad publishing was the only viable way to go. So I busted my ass trying to get my books published. I came very close to breaking in, and then decided to back out and go indie when that became realistic.

Here's a version of the template I created to write up a good query letter. This is what got me notes back and requests to see more. I hope it helps someone.

Firstly, of course you're terrible at describing your own work. Doing that sucks and is hard! Every writer HATES it. You're not alone.

Describe your story in three bits, try to make them as short as possible:

1. Who is your main character, what do they do, what makes them cool? "Jeremiah is a party-loving bullfrog who believes in peace."

2. What happens to fuck their life up? "When his best friend drinks all his wine, what's a bullfrog to do?"

3. What's at stake/how will our hero cope? Avoid asking questions here, don't say things like "can love and joy prevail?" Obviously it will, or there's no story. Say something more factual, like, "Jeremiah wants to get mad, but his motto has always been joy to the world." Give more of an idea how the character approaches the problem and the conflict involved rather than asking if the problem will be resolved.

3. Continued. That's how you write a book description to hook a new reader, but editors aren't new readers. Give away the end in a query letter. "Through the power of joy to the world, Jeremiah will see his way to bringing joy to you and me." And DON'T GET CUTE and think "oh, if I give away the end, they won't be hooked!" This is NOT a reader, this is an EDITOR. Show them you know how to stick the landing. Tell them the end.

Secondly, a query should open with who you are, why you wanted to write this story, what the story is about, and thank them for their time. Close it. Done. One page. I cannot stress how important this is: ONE PAGE.

So to try and clarify how the whole thingy should look:

Paragraph one: Dear Mr./Mrs./Mme. Smith (FIND OUT THE CORRECT NAME. You can ABSOLUTELY phone the secretary and ask. DO IT!) Hello, I'm Sunny Jim, and I love bullfrogs and hippies. I've been writing since I was a wee lil chitlin telling yarns to amuse my grandmammy. (If you've been published before, or have a degree, mention it here. If not, don't say shit. Zip it!) Please find attached/enclosed the first three pages (or however many this particular publisher/agent wants FIND OUT HOW MANY PAGES THEY WANT!! Call those secretaries!! Don't trust the website, who updates that shit anyway?? Not the agent or editor, that's who!) of my novel, Joy to the World.

Paragraph two: I decided to write a story about bullfrogs when I had a wild acid trip and the frogs told me to love all mankind, even when they piss me off.

Paragraph three: Jeremiah is a party-loving bullfrog who believes in peace. When his best friend drinks all his wine, what's a bullfrog to do? Jeremiah wants to get mad, but his motto has always been joy to the world. With the help of the love from the fishes in the deep blue sea, he sees his way clear to bringing joy to you and me.

Thank them for their time: I do so deeply appreciate you taking a moment to gander at my tale, Joy to the World. I hope it scratches an itch you didn't know you had.

Thirdly, be yourself, be a little funny, but DON'T GET CUTE. Editors read hundred of these per HOUR, and the last thing they want is something the author thinks is cute. Think of your day job, maybe you have customers or new employees who think they'll be funny and just wind up looking dumb. Yeah, don't do that.

Be relaxed, be confident you've got a good story, don't write anything you think will make you "stand out." You know what will make you stand out? Being courteous, professional, and personable. Use your words judiciously and appropriately. Talk to the editor like you would talk to a busy co-worker whose work you value and who you genuinely like. Short and friendly. If things go well, that's who this person will become to you.

Anyhow, I hope this helps, and it's been a loooong time since I queried an agent and got a positive response, so if I'm getting this wrong now and you know better, do let me know. I can't imagine any of this advice has gone out of fashion, though. Being smart with your words, keeping your email short, and being polite and friendly has not steered me wrong yet.
