Second of all since nobody else seems to be interested in sending me actual asks, I’m not even gonna put this under a readmore and I’m blaming you personally

5.What was your first Hawke like (gender/class/temperament)?

My first Hawke was my Mia, a two handed warrior with a shit temper but very good intentions. She was red/purple with everyone except friends and family.

6. First Inquisitor (gender/class/race/personality)?

It was a female mage dalish elf, with a very sweet, positive personality, and hern name was Sol. It was a very shitty thing to find out that the Lavellan/Solas ship gets called Solavellan because I literally fucking named my first fucking character Sol Lavellan.

9. Do you tend to play male or female characters most?

Female. I’m agender but afab and I present as a woman so I guess that’s me being a fucking coward

10. Share a pic of your favorite OC from any DA game.

I have no ingame pics of Mia but I have a ton of art of her. I draw her half naked a lot

11. Best Hawke quote?

I don’t remember the exact quote, but when you lose Leandra and go to Aveline and start The Captain’s Condolences, I accidentally picked an option that said something along the lines of “I’m smiling isn’t that enough?” when Aveline asks you if you’re ok. Of course bc it cuts off the whole conversation I reloaded, but I found it to be really representative of how Hawke deals with their own grief and feelings in general.

12. Do you prefer DA:O, DA2, or DA:I most?

Dragon Age II, hands down.

13. Favorite mission from DA:O?

Shit fam that’s a really hard question because all the main quests are amazing. I’d tentatively say The Nature of the Beast, despite of how much it irks me that the “good” ending forces me to do something I would not be able to do otherwise. I loved the forest, I loved the sad story, I loved the Lady of the Forest and I even loved the werewolves. Funny thing? in my first playthrough I got stuck in that part because I ignored everything and went straight to the woods after stopping in Lothering, so I was of course SUPER underlevelled.

14. Favorite DA:O party combo?

Alistair, Zevran and Wynne.

15. Favorite DA:O companion overall?

Zevran or Wynne!

16. DA:O: Did your Warden survive?

Nope, my canon Warden died killing the Archdemon. I even did a whole new playthrough and it was perfect and she survived and all but I stuck with the dead Warden story.

17. What did you name your Mabari?

My canon doggos didn’t have creative names. Nyneve (my Warden) named hers Pat, because Pat the Dog is a great pun. Mia named hers Sam, because Carver couldn’t say long names, but she calls him he Grand Dong Lord Sam Big Anal Fistula Hawke, the Fart Master

18. Who did you choose to rule Fereldan?

I always stick with Anora as ruler of Ferelden.

19. Favorite mission from DA2?

All of Anders and Fenris’ personal quests. I legitimately can’t pick just one. They’re super emotionally charged and intense and a lot of the time they hit super close to home.

20. Was everyone loyal at the end?

Yes. I don’t know how I managed but at the end of my playthrough I had romanced Anders and had full friendship from Anders, Fenris and Varric and a respectable ammount of friendship with Aveline.

21. Did Hawke side with the Mages or Templars?

Mages.

22. Favorite DA2 party combo?

Anders, Fenris and Varric, because I hate myself, or Isabela, Aveline and Merrill when I feel like having a girl day.

23. Did you give Fenris back to Danarius?

No, if it had been up to me I’d have pickled Danarius’ head and sent it to whoever’s in charge up there in Tevinter.

24. Favorite main-story quest from DA:I?

Another tough one but I’m gonna go for the easy answer and say In Hushed Whispers. The thought of all your friends who are literally dying but are still willing to help you because there might be a sliver of hope that things will work out in the end, and Leliana praying as she shoots arrow after arrow walking towards her death gives me the chills every fucking time.

25. Favorite DA:I place?

Emprise du Lion!!

26. Did your Inquisitor choose the Mages or the Templars?

Mages.

27. Which did you leave behind (Abyss)?

I never import my games to the Keep so I don’t have to chose between a character I care for and Stroud, so I always leave Stroud behind.

28. Inquisitor’s feelings on being the Herald of Andraste?

My canon quizzy is a Lavellan so honestly? He hates it but loves throwing it around to make andrastian human nobles suffer.

29. What are your feelings on the Chantry?

I hate it and hope it dies, slowly and painfully.

30. What are your feelings on the Circle?

They should all fucking burn and disappear forever.

31. DLC for the first 2 games: All of it, some of it, or none of it?

I have only played Awakening!

32. Favorite DLC mission overall?

Getting Sigrun!

33. Favorite DA character overall?

Fenris.

Solas, he can suck my left nut

One where you can dropkick Solas from a mountain into the sea

When Elthinia dies

39. Creepiest moment in the games?

Bartrand’s fucking haunted house in DA2-for some reason, maybe the pacing, that one really grated my nerves. Also the thing in Inquisition with the Crestwood village. It was very somber.

40. Who did you romance in your first playthrough for each game?

Alistair, Anders and Cullen. I got a thing for crusty boys I guess

41. Who do you wish you could romance that you can’t?

Varric and Krem!!!

42. Favorite romance overall so far?

The Iron Bull. It’s a no bullshit, 0 stress romance. I love Anders’ romance because it’s a super emotional catharsis and it’s passionate from beginning to end, but I love The Iron Bull and the way the relationship turns into romance slowly from a purely sexual based one, because sex isn’t -believe it or not-the most important thing in a relationship or symbollic of romance.

43. One romance you just can’t stand/doesn’t make sense/etc?

Solas.

44. Which 3 DA characters would you want as your best friends?

Fenris, Dorian and Zevran but I know for a fact that if they met me they’d kill me on the spot.

45. A character you’d love to drop in a volcano and forget about?

Solas.

46. Best antagonist in the series?

Bioware can’t write antagonists because they can’t handle nuanced characters, but I’d say Meredith. Her final fight is incredible and she’s a terrifying character with an aura of inmense charisma and coldness.

47. Worst antagonist in the series?

Loghain. They tried too hard to give people reasons to like him but he never cared for anything besides his own outdated ideals. He sold elves from the Alienage to Tevinter. Bitch how do you even manage to like someone like that

48. Something you do in EVERY DA playthrough, no matter what?

Recruiting all the companions, siding with elves and mages, promise myself I’m not gonna romance anyone and doing it anyway

49. Describe your perfect playthrough for any DA game.

Zevran romanced, mages and elves saved, dwarves can go to shit, Anora’s queen, Loghain is dead.

Anders romanced, mages saved, Elthinia’s dead, all my companions are on my side, the rest can go to shit I don’t care.

Mages and elves get all the support this joke of a game offers, Cullen doesn’t take lyrium, I put a mage in the Sunburst Throne to piss off the Chantry and keep the Inquisition pretending to collaborate with her while actually doing what I want with her blessing

ahahaha I HOPE YOU'RE READY FOR THIS 💜💜💜 (thank you for asking about Neri~)

Neri originated as my first-ever DAO OC over 10 years ago (!). I'd never played a Bioware game before and had no idea what I was doing in so many ways. A cis female mage, that version of Neri accidentally flirted with and then rejected Alistair, declined Morrigan's offer, and made the ultimate sacrifice against the Archdemon.

Early during the pandemic, I picked up DAO again and decided to try an OC I headcanoned as agender. It, uh, didn't work. Gendering is everywhere in that game. And it helped me realize just how damned uncomfortable it was, how much I personally hated being gendered all the time. Somewhere in there, I also first played DA2, which prompted me to try Awakening for the first time. (No idea how I managed to have Awakening all these years without playing it.)

On a whim, I decided to use updated agender Neri as my Awakening Warden since even a Warden who died at the end can still be loaded into Awakening. I'm so glad I did. Neri felt more sure of themself after surviving the Fifth Blight, an outcome only made possible by Loghain's sacrifice (since they still rejected Morrigan's ritual). Their post-Circle experience ensured they had a foundation from which to function as a noble and a Warden. And they found a family among the new Wardens and other inhabitants of Vigil's Keep, family they grew to trust more than their Blight companions.

Plus, with DA2 Anders fresh in my head, Awakening Anders threw me for a loop. As did his interactions with Neri. I started to think that perhaps he was someone who could accept Neri for themself, as themself, in part because he intimately knew what Circle life was like and what it could do to a person.

Because that kind of acceptance, something Neri never had in the Circle and barely found before the Archdemon fell, is what they needed to begin embracing who they are. Their Harrowing was delayed which fed into their insecurities, they were thrust into the role of Warden with little information or training, they fumbled through diplomatic tasks with the weight of nations on their shoulders. Yet, despite the horrors in Amaranthine, they also found peace and belonging and friendship. A place they could call home. A place to safely navigate their own identity, their strengths and weaknesses, their loves and fears.

All that rambling and I didn't really talk about Neri's queer labels. 😅 They're agender (they/them pronouns), pansexual, demiromantic, and struggle with gender dysphoria. Their title is "arlen" rather than "arl" or "arlessa." If they could change one thing about their body, they'd be flat-chested. Their queerness is an essential part of who they are. Neri has pushed me so far out of my comfort zone writing-wise and helped me discover my own labels along the way. 💜

Going to answer it because I’m waiting for dinner

How did you get into Dragon Age? A friend of mine got a Bioware bundle I think, and gave me Origins.

Have you finished all three games? Nope, Currently starting Trespasser and at the beginning of DA2 (finished Origins)

How long did it take you to finish the series? I can say it took me around 50-ish hours to finish Origins and I’m currently at 105h on Inquisition.

What was your first Warden (gender/class/race/personality)? Curiously enough, it was a female mage elf. But since you can’t marry Alistair with that warden, I started a new game with a Warrior Female Human, Ellyah Cousland. Personality wise, I usually go for the dork sarcastic and maybe a tiny violent dialog. I can’t really remember, it was 2 years ago :T

What was your first Hawke like (gender/class/temperament)? First Hawke was a male mage, I actually forgot his name, with the sarcastic temperament. Best.Hawke.Ever

First Inquisitor (gender/class/race/personality)? Mage \female (my headcanon, they are agender but we have to choose one so YEH)\, again with the sarcasm violent dork. Also another headcanon, they aren’t a Lavellan, but a Mahariel (dalish origin from Origins), but that’s another story.

Favorite DA:O backstory? I only played the dalish mage and the noble warrior, so I’m going with the second one.

Preferred class overall? Mage. I wish they were stronger ;_;

Do you tend to play male or female characters most? Good question. I’d say it’s 50/50. Right now I have 2 male inquisitors created, and 1 female (let’s make it 2 then). on Origins I’ve only played female, on DA2 I’ve only played with males.

Which did you leave behind (Abyss)? Hawke. Here’s why: Anders died and I wanted him to join him in Andraste’s bosom. Besides, Strout had to restore the Wardens.

Inquisitor’s feelings on being the Herald of Andraste? They don’t believe in it, but if the people want to, then what can they do? (aside from denying it every time)

What are your feelings on the Chantry? I’m going to skip this one sorry

What are your feelings on the Circle? Needs retirement tbh

DLC for the first 2 games: All of it, some of it, or none of it? All of them I guess?

Favorite DLC mission overall? from the first game? I’ve only played the Shale one so I’ll go with that one, besides I love her from da:I I loved the last part of JoH, but I’m sure Trespasser will kill me

Bloodmagic: yes or no? it’s a yay for me, my Mahariel is a bloodmage. Again, it’s a type of magic that depends on how you use it.

Funniest moment in the games? for starters, when you go talk to your companions on Trespasser? I cry. The avvar-goat-situation. The Bull x Quizzy x companions moment (yes, that one) I...can’t remember anything else

Creepiest moment in the games? BROODMOTHER

A moment/action you regret in-game? Sentencing that stupid dude to tranquility in Inquisition. KINDA goes against what Mahariel is, BUT it’s still in character but eeh

Who did you romance in your first playthrough for each game? DA:O - Alistair DA2 - was going for Fenris but ended up Anders DA:I - Cullen

Who do you wish you could romance that you can’t? SAMSON AND KREM

I stand to begin a search for my clothes, a search quickly halted by Anders embracing me from behind, his chin resting on my shoulder. “What… what is it?”

“If you need me for anything today, you’ll say so. Right?”

“Anything?”

He twirls me around to face him. “Anything.”

“You might regret saying that.” I kiss his cheek and fight my desire to go further. “Check in with the other Grey Wardens—I’d like to know who ended up on patrol today. Ask Elias if there’s anything I should be aware of… and ask him to send food to the study.” I glance at the small desk in my room. As I feared, the stack of vellum is higher than when I left. And there’s an unopened letter on top with Varel’s stamp in the wax. “I doubt I’ll have time to take meals in the dining hall today.”

For a second, Anders looks ready to protest in jest, but that humor quickly fades, perhaps as he notices the growing tension in my jaw. “It’s that bad?” he asks.

“A lot has piled up. If I prepare for the worst, I’ll be pleasantly surprised should it turn out otherwise.”

“Ever the optimist.”

“Isn’t that why I have you around?”

He brushes his lips against my forehead. “One of many reasons, it seems.”

Fic update: An affliction I can't cure

a Dragon Age fanfic

A simple mission to investigate reports of darkspawn activity ends in disaster and changes Neri's life forever. They never named how they felt for Anders. They thought they had more time. Now, it's too late. Yet Neri must somehow continue serving as Amaranthine's arlen and Ferelden's Warden-Commander despite their soul spiraling into despair.

Chapter 2: untold dreams, shattered

Nathaniel returns to Vigil's Keep, injured and alone. Neri finds out why.

Words blur in front of me. I rub my eyes; a glance out the window reveals the sun low on the horizon. It doesn’t feel like I’ve been reviewing reports and writing letters and confirming inventory since breakfast until I stand and my muscles groan in protest. I stretch, allowing myself an audible sigh as my neck and shoulders relax for the first time in hours.

The doors to the study burst open, Lynne rushing inside. “Arlen, it’s urgent,” she says breathlessly.

I’m immediately on my feet. I haven’t heard any odd noises, so an explosion can’t be the cause of her panic. Unless I was so focused on my work that I didn’t hear it. “What happened?”

“You’re needed… in the clinic.” She inhales as she wipes a hand across her brow. “Warden Howe has returned to the Keep, my liege. But he’s injured… and alone.”

My heart leaps into my throat. Anders.

I don’t wait for her. I sprint out of the study, down the corridors, and through the courtyard to the outbuilding where Jowan’s medical clinic resides. And then I force myself to catch my breath before I walk inside. I shouldn’t panic. The arlen can’t panic. But my rebel heart refuses to listen, pounding a too-swift drumbeat within my chest.

Then I enter.

Where do I start with this fic? Born as a one-shot inspired by my first-ever Awakening run (which has since spawned an entire worldstate), I wanted to explore a Warden who survived the Battle of Denerim but didn't romance any of the DAO companions. I used my first-ever Warden as the initial inspiration, but Neri Surana is ultimately quite different from that character.

My beloved demiromantic pansexual agender arcane warrior, ice mage extraordinare and Arlen of Amaranthine. They carry the weight of their Circle past and the burden of having battled through the Fifth Blight. Neri rejected Alistair's advances but also forced him to be king alongside Anora as queen. They were wholly unprepared to fall for Anders, and they refuse to name their feelings… until it's too late.

This story has been challenging for me to write from Neri's gender dysphoria to their imposter syndrome (too much like me) to their eagerness for sex but discomfort with romance (not at all like me). But I adore them. I love their journey and their growth. And I promise I'll post another chapter in the not-too-distant future.

Neri Surana: former Circle mage. Hero of Ferelden. Warden-Commander. Never been in love (probably), never sought it out (definitely). But after an unexpected kiss from Anders, Neri can't stop thinking about him, and they aren't ready for what those thoughts imply.

If I never enter the Fade again, it’ll be too soon. First my Harrowing, then that blighted sloth demon’s domain in the Circle Tower, then saving Connor. All of which happened before facing a bloody Archdemon. Then again, given my luck in life, perhaps I should’ve expected that investigating darkspawn activity in Amaranthine would somehow send me back into the Fade.

A trip preceded by finding tears in the Veil. I’m not anywhere near ready to wrap my mind around that. Our subsequent journey through the Fade closed those tears. I think. They were gone by the time we returned to reality, and that outcome has to be good enough for now.

Exhausted and wounded, I trudge through the muddy courtyard of Vigil’s Keep, Anders and Sigrun and not-Kristoff-but-Justice in tow. With the rush of battle long faded from my system, I’m all too aware of my fellow mage’s presence. Shit.

Then I spot a slender figure standing next to the well. Maker, not Aura, not now, not before I have time to consider the ramifications of a Fade spirit taking over a Grey Warden’s corpse—

Of course Aura sees us, of course she confronts us, of course she runs away heavy with grief, of course Justice wants to do something for her. Later. After rest, healing, washing up. Later.

At the Keep’s front steps, the private has nothing to report. Thank everything still good in this world that there are no new errands or favors or crises for me to handle.

“Neri, are you all right?” Anders murmurs near my ear as our small group slowly climbs the stairs toward the throne room.

He’s too close. My heart pounds, and I glance at the wall. “Tired. Been a long few days.”
