100 Days of Code
27/04/2023 || Day 5
Welp...haven't been here in a hot minute. Had to wrap things up for school, which took a lot of energy, but I'm officially done! And because of that, now's the perfect time to get back into practising coding! My friend lent me her book on preparing for coding interviews, so I'll be spending all of my time now studying that and of course doing mini projects. I've already got 2 in mind to practice specific things that I didn't cover at school, so once I finish this little project, I'll get started on those.
For now, I've been continuing my work on this age calculator mini-project, provided by Frontend Mentor. I've never touched Javascript before this, and messing around in HTML and CSS for school this semester has been really fun and has made me want to delve deeper into front-end stuff, so this was a good exercise to learn the basics of Javascript. I'm still not 100% finished with this, but all the JS stuff is done; now it's just CSS to get it to look as it should.
One cool (and important) thing that I learned today with CSS was the ability to add background images to buttons, and to adjust the size of that image to look good inside that button. It's a small thing, but something I wasn't aware of before. Oh, and I also learned how to adjust CSS properties with JS code (aka in a .js file, and not .css file). I have problems figuring out how code in different files connect together, so this was a win.

How do you write ChatGPT prompts for coding?
The recent rise in the use of ChatGPT has triggered the demand for skilled and qualified prompt engineers. Remember, ChatGPT is still evolving and will provide the best output based on prompts that have been entered.
Prompt engineering is expected to emerge as a new skill set and become one of the most in-demand skill sets. So, how do you master ChatGPT prompts for coding? As a prompt engineer, I unfold the fascinating world of crafting instructions that will help you interact more efficiently with large language models like ChatGPT.
Today, we'll focus on how coders can leverage this power by writing effective prompts for their coding needs.
Whether you're a seasoned developer or just starting your coding journey, ChatGPT can be a valuable companion. But to truly benefit from its assistance, you need to master the art of prompt engineering.
Here, we'll embark on a comprehensive exploration of crafting the perfect prompts for various coding tasks. We'll delve into the essential elements, explore different use cases, and showcase practical examples to guide your coding adventures with ChatGPT.
The pillars of effective ChatGPT prompts for coding
1. Specificity is your compass
Language & functionality
The foundation of a good prompt lies in clear communication. Start by explicitly stating the programming language you're working with (Python, Java, etc.) and the specific functionality you desire from the code. The more precise you are, the more accurately ChatGPT can understand your needs and generate the desired output.
Example prompt
"Write a Python function that calculates the area of a rectangle, taking its length and width as input." This prompt clearly states the language, desired function (area calculation), and expected input parameters (length, width).
2. Context is Your Map
Existing codebase
If your code interacts with an existing program, provide relevant context to ChatGPT. This could involve including snippets of the existing code or explaining its structure. ChatGPT can generate code that seamlessly integrates with your project by understanding the bigger picture.
Example prompt
"I'm working on a Python program that manages a to-do list application. I need a function to mark a task as complete. Here's a snippet of the code that defines the task data structure." (Include the relevant code snippet)
3. Define your inputs & outputs
Data flow
Imagine your code as a processing machine. Clearly define the format of the data it expects as input and how it should be manipulated to produce the desired output. This ensures ChatGPT understands the data flow and generates code that transforms data as intended.
Example prompt
"Write a JavaScript function that takes a string as input and returns a new string with all vowels removed." Here, the input is a string, and the expected output is a modified string without vowels.
Beyond Code Generation
ChatGPT's capabilities extend beyond simply generating new code. It can be your coding partner for a variety of tasks:
Debugging
Struggling with a pesky bug? Describe the issue in detail and provide the problematic code snippet. ChatGPT can analyze the code and suggest potential fixes, helping you identify the root cause of the problem.
Example prompt
"This Python function is supposed to find the maximum value in a list, but it's always returning the wrong result. Can you analyze the code and suggest what might be causing the error?" (Include the code snippet)
Code review
Want a fresh perspective on your code? Explain its purpose and ask ChatGPT to review it for efficiency, best practices, or potential improvements.
Example prompt
"I've written this Java function to sort user data by age. Please review the code and suggest any ways to improve its readability or efficiency." (Include the code snippet)
5. Tips & tricks for mastering prompts
Start simple
Begin with clear, basic prompts and gradually increase complexity as you gain experience and confidence.
Iterative approach
Don't expect perfect code in the first attempt. Refine your prompts based on ChatGPT's responses, tweaking them until you achieve the desired outcome. This iterative process is key to successful prompt engineering.
Be cautious
While ChatGPT can generate code, always thoroughly review and test it yourself. AI-generated code should not be blindly incorporated into critical applications.
Examples of ChatGPT prompts for coding: Putting theory into practice
Let's solidify our understanding with three practical examples showcasing how to craft effective prompts for different coding scenarios:
Example 1: Generating code for data manipulation
Scenario
You're building a Python program to analyze customer data and need a function to calculate the average purchase amount for each customer.
Prompt
"Write a Python function that takes a list of dictionaries as input, where each dictionary represents a customer purchase (including customer ID and purchase amount). The function should return a dictionary with the customer ID as the key and the average purchase amount for that customer as the value."
Example 2: Debugging assistance
Scenario
You're working on a JavaScript program to validate user input, but you encounter an error where email addresses with special characters are not correctly recognised.
Prompt
"I'm working on a JavaScript function that validates email addresses. It checks for '@' and '.' symbols, but emails with special characters like '+' or '-' are not being flagged as valid. Can you analyze the code and suggest where the issue might lie?" (Include the relevant code snippet for email validation)
Expected Outcome
ChatGPT might identify the issue in the regular expression used for email validation and suggest modifications to handle special characters.
Example 3: Code Review and Improvement
Scenario

What is Coding for Kids? What Age is Appropriate to Learn to Code?
What is coding?
In simplest terms, the method of communicating with any computer is called coding. This implies that the language that we use to give the computer instructions to perform different functions is called coding. Often coding is also known as software programming or computer programming. It can take various forms like visual blocks, JavaScript, Python, HTML, and CSS. Coding, therefore, is a language. This language is what allows our technology to thrive. It allows microprocessors in everyday objects like air-conditioners and televisions to function properly. It is the very base of Artificial Intelligence (AI) that allows more sophisticated technology like self-driven cars and security systems to operate.
Coding for children: One might wonder then about the relationship between coding and children. We have already established that coding is a language. And like any other language, it is never too early to learn it. Learning any language from an early age gives one proficiency. It allows children to gain many cognitive and social benefits. These benefits not only allow them to fit in a more globalized world but also aids them in becoming more successful.
We are living in a hyper-digital world. Technology has become more prominent in our lives today than it was even five years back. The pandemic currently sweeping across the globe has made the importance of technology even more prominent. And coding is the language of conversation with technology. Hence, kids learning programming or coding is becoming valuable, if not a necessary skill set.
One might ask why kids need to learn to program? Is it not enough that they know how to operate the technology without going into too much detail? The answer to this is hidden in the benefits that kids learn from programming.
The benefits of Coding for Kids.
To overcome all adversities in life, children need to know how to solve the problems that arise. As parents, we have to help our children. We can solve their problems, but that is not a sustainable measure. We need to equip our children with the methods that will enable them to solve their problems. Children learn programming by understanding how programming works. It helps them understand how software developers use coding and mathematics to solve problems and build applications logically and creatively. In traditional science, failure is often feared. But through coding, children learn that failure is not something to fear. Coding is a learning opportunity for children that allows them to constantly fail without consequences. It allows them to creatively solve a problem through a trial and error method. Children learn programming by breaking larger problems into smaller components. It enables them to solve problems through creative thinking and action. Increases your logical thinking skills and creative thinking. This, in turn, increases your confidence and self-esteem. One of the greatest benefits of programming is that it teaches children to enjoy math. Traditional teaching often makes math a daunting subject. But through coding, children learn to organize and analyze data in a fun and creative way. This, in turn, helps them delve deeper into calculations in a lighthearted and entertaining way. Writing code for children is generally a fun and engaging method. It's the perfect gift if you want your kids to be creative problem solvers and enjoy math.

100 Days of Code
18/04/2023 || Day 4
I took a break yesterday from literally everything since I submitted a big project the night before. That's ok, I'm not forcing myself to do 100 days of code all in a row.
As for today, I've gotten back to working on a mini-project from FrontEnd Mentor of creating an age calculator using HTML, CSS, and Javascript (my first time learning/using JS). I'm really dumb and over-complicated the calculations, but that's my brain when I have to do math. I probably would've save a lot of time and energy had I slowed down. The good news is that with my over-complicated methods I have the correct amount of days since one's birthday up to the present day, but the bad new is that that's not really required, so...oh well, it's always a learning experience!
I think I have the logic all down, so now it'll be time to mess around in CSS! I left the design part for last because I really like working with visuals, and thought it would be a reward after completing the logic. For today, enjoy this bland-looking interface.

Create a new Python script and import the required libraries. Initialize the Google Maps API client with your API key.import googlemaps import pandas as pd api_key = 'YOUR_API_KEY' gmaps = googlemaps.Client(key=api_key)
Step 4: Retrieve Place Details
Choose the location for which you want to scrape reviews. You'll need the place ID, which you can obtain using the places API.place_id = 'YOUR_PLACE_ID' place_details = gmaps.place(place_id=place_id, fields=['name', 'rating', 'reviews'])
Step 5: Extract and Store Reviews
Now, you can extract reviews from the obtained place details and store them in a pandas DataFrame for further analysis.reviews = place_details['reviews'] df_reviews = pd.DataFrame(reviews) df_reviews.to_csv('google_reviews.csv', index=False)
This snippet saves the reviews in a CSV file for easy access and sharing.
Step 6: Analyze and Visualize
With your reviews in hand, you can perform sentiment analysis, aggregate ratings, or visualize the data. Utilize Python's data manipulation and visualization tools to gain insights into customer sentiments.# Example: Calculate average rating average_rating = df_reviews['rating'].mean() print(f'Average Rating: {average_rating}')
