Just finished Jane Eyre (1973) and I cannot say otherwise than that I absolutely adored it! 2006 must always be my favourite; I first saw it when I was little and it left a lasting impression on me; but this definitely takes second place! I think this adaptation was very successful in compressing some things—as is almost unavoidable—but never giving the feeling like something is truly missing. The compression in the film adaptations always makes it feel like something is lacking, but here I really did feel all the essentials were there. 1983 has as much, if not more, but the acting in this version elevates it beyond that one. Episode four was just constantly spot on, and their chemistry was so, so good. I love them together. The St John section was very, very decent, and I'm so glad we got Jane teasing Rochester at the end! The one thing missing in this adaptation is perhaps a certain moody atmosphere, but it has so much to make up for that and I'll take good acting over good cinematography any day!
I'm sorry it took me so long to answer this ask, but in the interim since I got it: i) an assignment I had for the end of October was moved to last friday and I had to rush it ii) the washer broke down iii) the water purifier broke down iii) the dishwasher broke down. So I have been running after things and being too tired at night to answer asks.
I'm so glad you liked it! It truly is a hidden gem. While I think the St John part is better in 83, this Rochester brings so much more to the rest. I think Michael Jayston commits to the notion that yes, Rochester loves Jane and really truly means to make her happy and is ALSO being very stupid about it and hurting her deeply in the process too. It's very clear (and poignant) in that bit at the wedding where he grabs Jane's hand and holds it over his heart, like he fears something will happen and she will be taken away from him. The very gesture shows both, how much she means to him, but also the fear and guilt that are plaguing him because he knows he's doing something he shouldn't.
I get what you mean about the moody atmosphere. It IS a big deal, but ultimately we have so many adaptations now, that time has made it less of an issue for me. If we only had, say, 73 and 83, I'd be begging for some Gothic atmosphere. As is, having 97, 06 and 11, I'm like "we can have a happy go lucky Jane Eyre. As a treat."

So about that...
I'm all in to recognize that and implement it into our vision if it's true, and it would mean a lot. Now is it actually true ?
Emperor Varius Avitus Bassianus, later known as Elagabalus after the god they (i'm using they out of prudence here, because ultimately i'll get to it but their gender isn't known with certainty, and please know that I do not exactly like defaulting to a neutral they here) were a priest and advocate of, was a teen emperor who reigned about 4 years.
They're one of the few emperors who received a Damnatio Memoriae, which means "damnation of memory", i.e. people were to forget about them after the fact, because they were considered to be such a shameful moment in history.
Which means the texts we have are very scarce, mostly coming from people in the roman Senate... who absolutely HATED Elagabalus, most likely because of their fringe religious beliefs and practices. I didn't actually read these texts as my latin skills are way too light for that, but an archaeologist friend actually did, as well as tried to understand how these texts were considered in terms of reliability.
What came out of that is (simply put) : -> People during their reign absolutely despised them. They were considered tyrannical, unpredictable, depraved, and all of that kind of stuff. Which in some aspects, considering they were a teenager, would not be all that surprising after being put in charge of the Roman Empire after their parents and adult relatives were all dead.
-> The tone of the text is vitriolic, and roman writers (just as in other times) are known for slandering very hard when talking about people they hate. (they have done that a ton for non-roman/"barbarian" people, and it's usually taken into account when reading their texts that it's often a very biased descrption)
-> The sentence "call me not lord, for I am a Lady" is indeed in those texts. As well as stories of Elagabalus selling sex, roleplaying as an abused woman, and taking the place of the "dominated" during the sexual act (which was seen as very dishonoring for a man in these times, as sexuality was not seen in terms of hetero/homosexuality but in a penetrator/penetrated way, of which only the first was considered correct for a man - and I say man in their understanding of a man, not my personal one), as well as many other stuff that's clearly considered unfit for a roman citizen or emperor, including stuff that would be considered dishonoring for women.
Now given the context of the writing, which is full of hate, can it be true that all of that happened ? Yeah, it certainly can, if you trust the text in a literal manner. But it's also very likely given the context we have that the text that contains that kind of information is also full of false information written to throw shade to Elagabalus (and to clarify, I do not have a personal negative judgement to anything the emperor is cited to have done - the authors did and that's the problem). Even Cassius Dio, prominent historian of the time, cites their reign as shrouded in misinformation (rephrasing a little here but that's the jist of it)
So.... yeah Elagabalus could have been a trans woman. And I really wouldn't dislike it if it was true, as said in the intro it would be very meaningful as a part of trans history. But known facts would be good. And this is, sadly, not a known fact, and probably won't be (we could some day find a text that's less biased and confirms it, but given the short timeframe and the Damnatio Memoriae pronounced shortly after, i would not count on it).
It's a cool move from the British museum in terms of comm to have said that - especially given the general context in the UK when it comes to trans people-, but they are either very generous in their interpretation, or way too trusting of the source for their interpretation to be considered sound in my opinion.
I'm truly sorry.

I bring you… my silly little comics. Saw a tik tok this morning about British Museum recognizing emperor Elagabalus as a trans woman 🏳️‍⚧️, and I just had to draw this.

hello. going forward, if i don't reply immediately, please don't think that i have abandoned you. i'm currently overwhelmed, but i'm continuing to truck on, despite that. it might take longer to reply to everyone, so please be patient with me.
if anyone here does feel disappointed, angry, ashamed, or anything like that towards me, just know that you are valid to feel however you feel.
again, i might take longer to reply to everyone, but just know that no one here is being forgotten. i promise. i do apologize for my lack of responses to everyone going forward.

I know I have been sharing a lot of fundraisers for people in palestine. You may notice that they all sound kind of similar. For that I'm sorry, I'm not very good with words, I'm writing them as soon as they come in, and I don't really know what to say. I still hope I can help but if you are going to send an ask about a fundraiser, know that I might not respond immediately. I'm sorry about that.

I actually was trying to agree with what you were saying, I'm sorry my tags came across at being directed at you or insinuating that you were the one guilting smut writers, I didn't think that was the case all. Mine was a general complaint related to when others put down or demean what they don't like (whether that be smut or fluff or angst, etc.) and yet don't hold up and promote what they do like.
What I was trying to say but clearly didn't get across as I was just feeling frustrated and was speaking very flippantly, was that often I see people complain about how smut is pointless or gross and is only written to get interactions, when it's just as valid a genre as any other and is just as much work, and isn't putting down or elbowing out non-smut simply by existing. Hence my evidently poor attempt to communicate the idea that people should support what they like instead of putting down/complaining about what they don't, and shaming the writers who write something just for the simple fact that that it's not their preference. Otherwise, how are readers going to get more of their favourite stories if the writers don't know that people actually like them.
Thank you for adding your follow-up, as I had in fact not seen it, and once again I completely agree with all of those points.
“all i see is smut” “why can’t i find fluff and angst and not smut” “how come fluff isn’t—”
yet when nonsmut fics come across your dash you don’t support it by circulating it with a reblog. smut is pushed because it’s the smut audience that tends to be more supportive when it comes to boosting the fics they read 💗

bring back zooterkins, the best 17th-century swear word
I don't normally do Just Characters Swearing, but. ...this kind of wrote itself and then wouldn't leave my head. it comes from both a piece of character-writing advice that has always stuck with me, and also my conviction that Leona is 1000% funnier as a character if his dialogue has to stay G-rated. let Kalim say fuck, but don't let Leona say bastard.
(I'm sorry)
