1 3 or 4 for the hlvrai roommates prompts? <3
1. There is a blackout in the whole building and now we stumble through our apartment, trying to find some candles.
Tommy and Benrey had been playing video games when it happened. Benrey was finally about to win their first Skullgirls match against Tommy when the lights in the living room flickered and then went out, taking the television with it. Benrey groaned and slumped back against the couch.
“Bro, come on, using powers is cheating.”
“That wasn’t me!” Tommy protested, putting down the controller and looking around. “I think- it must be a power outage, look outside.”
Benrey followed his pointing finger out the window and sure enough, the building next to theirs had gone dark. Before Benrey could comment on it, however, there was a loud thunk from Gordon’s room. Tommy and Benrey looked at each other for a moment, confused, then realization spread across Tommy’s face.
“Oh no-” He jumped to his feet, wringing his hands anxiously. “Benrey, stay here, okay?”
“Huh? Uh, okay.” Benrey stayed put on the couch and watched Tommy rush over to Gordon’s door, unsure what was going on.
Tommy knocked lightly on the door and raised his voice just a little. “Gordon? It’s me, it’s Tommy. I’m gonna- I’m gonna come inside, alright?” He opened the door slowly and slid inside, shutting it behind himself.
Benrey stared at the now closed door, then drifted their gaze over to the window again. Man, it really got dark out there when all the lights were out, huh? They beeped out a few bubbles of bored Sweet Voice and tried not to pay attention to the hushed voices muffled behind Gordon’s door.
The door opened again an indeterminate amount of time later, and Benrey cut their Sweet Voice rendition of the Sims 3 theme short. Tommy emerged from the room, closely followed by Gordon, bundled in the quilt from his bed. Both of them had their phone flashlights on, and they illuminated the room just enough to reveal that Gordon looked like he’d been put through the wringer. It finally slotted into place in Benrey’s brain why Gordon might not be the happiest about a blackout.
“I’m going to look for candles and flashlights,” Tommy said, using his gentlest tone of voice. “Benrey can you, um, can you do some Sweet Voice to make the room brighter?”
“Not blue,” Gordon cut in sharply.
“Not blue,” Tommy repeated with a nod.
“Yeah, I can do not blue. You want, uhhhhh, yellow? I got yellow. Maybe some orange,” Benrey said, pronouncing orange with a soft ‘g’ in an attempt to make Gordon laugh. He didn’t laugh, but his mouth did quirk into an almost smile, which Benrey counted as a win.
“Yellow is fine, man.” Gordon shuffled over to sit on the other end of the couch. Benrey twinged with guilt when they noticed Gordon didn’t immediately lean in for cuddles, like he had been more often lately. They nodded and sang out a long string of buttercup yellow, filling the room with golden light.
Benrey eventually paused for breath and gave Gordon a worried look. “You good, dude?” They asked in their most concerned variety of monotone. Gordon sighed and pulled the quilt tighter over his shoulders.
“Yeah. Blackouts just suck,” He said. The light from the Sweet Voice reflected off the metal of his prosthetic. Benrey looked away and continued singing yellow.
Eventually, Tommy had lined every countertop, table, and shelf with candles and flashlights, and the room was almost as bright as it was before the lights went out. He approached the other two on the couch, holding several decks of cards like an offering.
“We can’t play video games or use the TV for, uh, obvious reasons,” He said, sitting opposite them at the coffee table and placing the cards down. “But I thought we could play cards! Have I- Maybe I can teach you guys how to play nuts?”
Benrey muffled a snort in their hands, and Gordon raised an eyebrow, a smile pulling at his lips. “Play what?” He asked.
“Nuts! Like, uh, like ‘aw nuts!’” Tommy said, adding a defeated hand gesture for good measure.
“Sure, dude.” A full grin had appeared on Gordon’s face by now.
“I’m sorry, Mr. Freeman, were you thinking of something else?” Tommy asked with exaggerated innocence.
“Yeah, Freeman, what were you thinking of?” Benrey added, unable to resist ribbing Gordon a little. “Get your mind out of the gutter.”
“Listen, can you blame me? This guy’s over here spitting out balls-” Gordon gestured dramatically at Benrey, his tone having returned to its typical state of exasperated amusement. Benrey threw their head back and laughed, cackle interspersed with more bubbles of light.
By the time Tommy had explained the rules and the game began speeding up, Gordon was more or less back to himself, his quilt dropped on his lap so he could smack Benrey’s hands out of the way to lay down cards. Tommy, predictably, won by a landslide, and Benrey’s score was so deep in the negatives it should’ve been mathematically impossible, but they didn’t mind too much. They just flopped to the side with a groan and peered out the window.
“Hey,” they said, interrupting Tommy’s shuffling. “They got stars. Outside? Let’s go outside, yes please?”
Gordon and Tommy glanced at each other and shrugged, grabbing flashlights and following Benrey as they shuffled out onto the small balcony attached to their apartment. Without all the light pollution, the sky was full of stars they couldn’t normally see. Gordon’s shoulder brushed against Benrey’s as they all peered up at the sky, and Benrey could hear Gordon take in a deep breath and slowly let it out. He leaned gently against Benrey’s side and outstretched his opposite hand to interlace his fingers with Tommy’s.
“Thanks, you guys,” Gordon said, a vulnerable expression on his face. Tommy smiled and squeezed his hand, and Benrey leaned up to kiss his cheek.
“Of course,” Tommy said like there was never any other option. Benrey didn’t say anything, just hummed their agreement.
The three of them stood pressed against each other, watching the stars until the city slowly lit up again.

Congratulations Amos you’ve been accepted to Crimson Revolt as Gideon Prewett!
↳ please refer to our character checklist
First of all, I have to address that there’s a wonderful irony in accepting someone with the same name as my character in the rp. But honestly, your app was a delight to read -- the depth of exploration in your personification of Gideon absolutely beautiful. You left us with such a clear picture of the character, both in his backstory and in the potential future effects of the war, all while bringing through Gideon’s humor as well. Were so thrilled to welcome you into the rp and can’t wait to see you explore all of the dimensions to Gideon that you presented in your app! *your FC change to Eddie Redmayne has been accepted!
application beneath the cut
OUT OF CHARACTER
INTRODUCTION
Amos, 20, he/him, GMT
ACTIVITY
I won’t lie, I can get extremely busy, I am currently training at drama school in technical theatre, and some weeks it is manic, that being said, I have missed writing so much, and I have missed being part of an rp group even more, I am committed to making it part of my daily routine again. My uni work should calm down for the next couple of months and I really want to write as much as I can in that spare time. 5/10
TRIGGERS
*removed for privacy
HOW DID YOU FIND US?
I searched for HP RP in tumblr and your ad was one of the most recent posts, I had a click around your blog and really liked the look of you!
WHAT HARRY POTTER CHARACTER DO YOU IDENTIFY WITH MOST?
I am a Neville Longbottom through and through. I could be painfully awkward, self conscious, under confident, clumsy, making goofy mistakes, but in the last couple of years I think I’ve really come a long way. I’ve found my voice, and my confidence, I am happy with who I am as a person, and am no longer striving to be someone I’m not, I have recently decided to stop being so embarrassed all the effing time and just accept that sometimes I do silly things and it’s better just to laugh about it than worry over it for the next week. It has honestly enhanced my life. I’m still waiting on the magic physical transformation into a greek God though.
ANYTHING ELSE?
If there is anything in my app that doesn’t fit with your current Fabian’s headcanons and such, then I will be most happy to adapt if I got in and had a chance to speak with them!
IN CHARACTER
DESIRED CHARACTER
Gideon Prewett
FACE CLAIM
I would be happy to keep Ryan Gosling, although in Fabian’s bio it says the twins look exactly the same, so I would also be quite happy to take on Eddie Redmayne. I would quite like them to be identical, unless of course Beth would prefer them to be unidentical.
REASON FOR CHOSEN CHARACTER
I have been in love with the Prewett twins for a good couple of years now. I wrote Fabian in another rp for a long time and got very attached to him, although I have played both Fabian and Gideon at various different points. When I first started I thought every rps interpretation of the twins would be very different because there is so little on them in the books, but it turns out everyone has very similar ideas. I love that, I love that their character shines through those small details and through the legacy of their family in the books and through the reputation of the Order and through what we imagine the first wizarding war must have been like.
I love that they are essentially broken people trying so hard to make everyone else around them safe and happy, and I love that they are the kind of people who rebel against growing up. I do think it’s very important to see them as individuals, but I think their relationship with each other is one of their most essential qualities. I think it is what makes them unique characters to write. Even if you were writing other twins, I don’t think you’d have the same kind of experience. I think it’s that relationship that keeps drawing me back to them. Their personalities and their backstories, occupation, hair colour whatever, can change from rp to rp, and I love exploring each slightly new character, but most of all I love finding out how they interact with their twin, and what their priorities are during the war, and what lengths they are willing to go for their family.
I think my interpretation of Gid in this rp, is someone who is not necessarily hiding their negative emotions by putting on a brave face and cracking jokes, but instead, he is separating the good from the bad. He doesn’t mind when people see he’s having a bad day, or if people can tell he’s angry, or stressed, he won’t do much to hide it whilst the situation is still having that negative affect on him. But as soon as he gets to the party or the pub, or he’s having a laugh with a friend, he lets go of whatever is bothering him and enjoys the moment. And think it is people who generally make him happiest, like, he can find enjoyment in food and sunsets and such, but it’s interacting with people that really brightens his mood.
PREFERRED SHIPS // CHARACTER SEXUALITY // GENDER & PRONOUNS
No Preferred ships as yet. Bisexual but with a higher preference for men that he’s not quite willing to admit yet. Male, he/him.
CREATE ONE (OR MORE!) OF THE FOLLOWING FOR YOUR CHARACTER:
Gideon works in the Department of Magical Transportation. It’s not his dream job, or something he’s particularly enthused about, but it keeps him busy and it pays the rent. He got a job in a low level position a couple of years after graduating Hogwarts, thinking it would simply be a filler until he found what he was really supposed to be doing. However a summer temp job turned into 7 years of small talk, paperwork and rank climbing. The truth is he never really figured out what he wanted to do, apart from boyhood dreams of being a quidditch player, he never found a career that grabbed his entire attention. Now with the war, he has higher priorities than finding his true calling. It is a stable job and it gives him a good position in the Ministry, which is helpful for Order work. Despite what all this may point too, Gideon is a very intelligent individual, perhaps not academically outstanding, but his brain is always ticking along, even when it is being numbed by repetitive form filling and box ticking.
Gideon is very interested in the arts. He always liked music, but after graduating from Hogwarts and moving to London he fell in love with muggle artist like Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin. It started with him curiously walking into a muggle record shop and buying a few singles, now he is hooked on Ginsberg’s poetry, and Robert Mapplethorpe’s photography. Particularly Mapplethorpe. Gid really likes that they don’t move, like a one way mirror, he can take as much as he likes from the photo but it doesn’t take anything back, it almost feels like a secret, and being a twin, he doesn’t get too many of those. A couple of years back he picked up a guitar, and now he can play a few chords or pick a few tunes. He also likes to scribble down ideas whenever he gets a chance, half finished lines of poetry or prose litter his apartment collecting coffee stains and dust.. Sometimes he thinks maybe he was meant to be an artist, but he brushes those thoughts quickly away.
Gideon isn’t great at relationships anymore. A couple of years ago he had a fling with a guy at the ministry called Anthony. Gid fell head over heals, he felt it was a lot more than a fling, but Anthony insisted that it was just a bit of fun. He didn’t allow Gid to tell anyone, explaining that his family wouldn’t be very understanding if they found out, and at first he was fine with that. At first everything was spectacular. But eventually Gid ended up giving a lot more into the relationship than he was getting back. Gid was essentially at his boyfriend’s beck and call, but if Gid ever had a bad day, Anthony always had some excuse for why he couldn’t come over. It went as far as Gid being guilt tripped into missing the birth of one of his nephews because his boyfriend had a cold and needed looking after. Anthony often asked to borrow money from Gideon and although Gideon barely had anything to give, he would give it freely, to the point where the boyfriend spent money Gid needed for food on a new pair of shoes. Anthony would near constantly flirt with people infront of Gid, but if Gid so much as looked at someone else the wrong way, Anthony would fly into a jealous rage. In short Gid was miserable, but he was living in those moment of blissful hope where Anthony would make him feel like the only person in the entire world who was worth a damn. Unfortunately, those moment became few and far between. Eventually someone (probably Fabian, let’s be honest) got worried about how far Gid had declined from his old chipper self, and intervened. Gid had to break up with Anthony, and after a tumultuous on again off again period Gid finally broke ties completely. On the outside it appeared like Gid soon bounced back to his old self, but underneath he still carries the scars of the relationship. He finds it hard to commit, or trust people’s affection, the insecurity that probably lead to the relationship getting so out of hand in the first place, even more pronounced now. He never thought he would be sucked into abuse like that, always the first to speak up about other people’s injustices, but he quickly found out it was much different when he was submerged in the situation himself.
IN CHARACTER QUESTIONNAIRE
♔ If you were able to invent one spell, potion, or charm, what would it do, what would you use it for or how would you use it? Feel free to name it: Right, I was thinking about this the other day, and I think it would be really very useful to have a spell that let me see round corners. Because, the other day, I was in the arse end of London, at a pub, a muggle pub I should add, those places are crazy! But anyway, I needed the toilet quite badly, I stumbled in, there are just two stalls, neither of them have door so I storm into one, and there’s two people furious shagging on the loo, now, if I’d been able to see round that corner, I would have made a strategic retreat before getting anyway close to that cubicle. Although, I suppose, being in muggle London, I couldn’t have used magic anyway. And really, if I hadn’t been so drunk I might have taken the loud moaning and groaning as a cue too. But, you get my point! It would be a handy thing to have up your sleeve!
♔ You have to venture deep into the Forbidden Forest one night. Pick one other character and one object (muggle or magical), besides your wand, that you’d want with you: Fabian, of course, in this purely hypothetical situation that we have never done before because it is completely FORBIDDEN and not allowed at all. But I’d probably bring a packet of smokes, maybe something a little stronger, Fabian could bring a wireless because I’m cheating and assuming he’s getting one item too. Then we could find a nice little clearing somewhere and relax far away from the troubles of the world, closer to the very real troubles of getting speared by an angry centaur. Again, like I said, a purely hypothetical situation.
♔ What kinds of decisions are the most difficult for you to make? It takes me forever to decide what to eat at restaurants, everything sounds so good, the whole place smells amazing, the guy across from me has something on his plate that looks delicious, but it’s all so expensive! Maybe I’ll just have a salad. Oh no, but you’re ordering a steak and my mouth will water the whole meal, Screw it! Bring out three pheasants, oysters and a bucket of champagne!
♔ What is one thing you would never want said about you? That I don’t care about something I definitely do care about. I don’t care if someone says I don’t care enough about signing Stacy’s leaving card, because honestly I spoke to Stacy once and I really don’t care about signing her leaving card. But if someone dared say I didn’t care about my family, they were have a hex coming their way. I know sometimes I can come off a little nonchalant because I like to have a good time, but that does not mean I don’t care. I care way too much for it to be discarded by an offhand comment from someone who has no idea what they’re talking about.
WRITING SAMPLE
It was the hottest day of the year so far. Gid could feel the sweat making his shirt stick to his back, his school tie and cloak had long since abandoned. Nearly everybody was down by the lake. Couples were sitting on the grass enjoying the last light of the sun giving their significant other’s acne clad faces a golden glow. Groups of friends pretended to do their homework whilst exchanging the latest gossip and daring each other to throw things at the squid. And then there was Gideon and Fabian. They stood apart from the rest, purveying over the scene in front of them. Gideon was relatively satisfied by the turnout, of course, the poor fools didn’t yet realise they had turned out for anything.
“You definitely set the timer up right?” Gideon asked Fab as they waited.
“Yes, definitely. Any second now.”
“Really? Because that’s what you said last time. Remember how disappointing that was. Just a good job we didn’t advertise this time.” Gideon smiled despite himself and Fabian gave an amused huff.
“Any second n-”
Fabian was cut off by the abrupt explosion from across the lake. Reds and greens and purples burst into the twilight sky. Flowers and streamers of light illuminating the faces of the Hogwarts populations as they looked on in avid fascination. Gideon very nearly fist bumped the air. The fireworks were an incredible success. People were gasping and laughing and screaming.
People were screaming.
Gideon came too. He was on his knees, sweat slick hair stuck to his face and his head hung uselessly on his chest. His hand clenched around his wand feebly at first, then stronger. People were screaming. They were running. They were terrified. Someone booted his leg as they ran past and stumbled over his inanimate body. He barely felt it.
His eyes were open, but he couldn’t see anything. Just dust, the thickest cloud of dust, he couldn’t even make out the ground in front of him. He struggled to remember where he was.
He had lit a fuse. He had been told to light a fuse. He had thought it would be a good idea. He had thought it would make a difference. Now people were screaming. There was a baby crying somewhere. The dust and chaos cleared fractionally and Gideon could make out the wreckage of the blast.
What had he done? He tried to get to his feet, but his legs wouldn’t work. He dragged himself over to a wall, he couldn’t breath. Every time he drew in a breath, he sucked in the dust and began to cough. He would die here. He couldn’t breath. He had killed people here. Innocent people. The baby had stopped crying. He had to get out.

Something New- Chapter 2 (Trixya) - Julie
AN: Thank you guys so much for your lovely feedback! I’m really inspired right now and very excited to see where this is going. Thanks for reading! - Julie
Chapter 2 includes lots of fluff, Kim Chi and painted nails
Brian did not see Katya again for five days. However he often caught himself thinking about the weird woman living above him. He didn’t know what it was but somehow he found her intriguing. Then, one day he met her on the staircase together with Keira. It was a sunny Tuesday morning and he was about to take Keira to school. The four years old was dressed in all pink, a fashion choice which Brian approved of for once, her little backpack and her two pigtails bounced as she happily jumped down the steps of the stair. Brian had to grab her backpack to hold her back before she could bump into Katya.
It was an early morning and Katya was dressed in a short skirt and a somewhat see-through blouse. Brian could make out her red lacy bra underneath. Her make-up was smudged and faded, only her bright red lipstick, which she must have reapplied, stood out. Her hair was pulled back into a messy ponytail but a few strands of hair had fallen out and framed her face. She smelled of smoke. Brian wondered if she had spent the night at home.
“Good morning”, she smiled at Keira, “you’re up early.”
“I have to go to school”, the little girl explained.
“Is it Monday already?”, the woman asked perplexed.
“It’s Tuesday”, Brian said.
“Shit”, Katya muttered. She looked at Keira and sighed “Shit now I said shit in front of a child. Three times. Shit.” Keira giggled and Brian instinctively pulled her closer.
“I should go”, Katya said apologetically and began to climb the stairs. Brian stared at her. After a few steps she turned around and looked him directly in the eyes.
“It was nice seeing you again, Brian”, she winked and turned back with a flip of her ponytail.
Brian watched her go but then he felt Keira tuck at his sleeve. “We gotta go, Dad”, she said and he took her hand. They walked next to each other in silence for a few minutes.
“Katya is weird”, Keira said eventually. Brian nodded.
“But also nice. She liked my shoes.” Brian nodded once more.
“And she’s pretty.”
“You think so?”, he asked. Brian didn’t think that Katya was ugly. She had nice cheekbones and an amazing smile but she looked like various pieces of ill-fitting fabric thrown together and her foundation was a tone too dark so that she had visible lines. But Keira nodded eagerly.
“I like her”, she sighed, “do you think I could play with her?”
“I don’t know, Honey”, Brian said, “Maybe you should play with people your own age? I think Katya’s pretty busy.” In reality he just didn’t want his daughter to spend too much time with the strange woman. Ever since Keira was in his life he had become more wary of people and chain-smoking women who had Russian names, despite being from Boston and who couldn’t seem to remember their weekends did not strike him as particularly trustworthy.
Brian dropped Keira off at her school and kissed her on the forehead.
“I’ll pick you up later. Have a nice day, Honey.” She waved as she ran off to a group of other children her age. He looked after her for a moment and asked himself if he was a good father. That was something he asked himself quite often, if he could give her anything she needed. Sure, he loved her with all his heart but sometimes he wondered if he was too judgemental when she presented her strange outfits and if he could be more supportive of her. In particularly dark nights, when he couldn’t sleep and just tossed and turned he asked himself if maybe he was too young, if she would have been better of with his parents, or if maybe she did need a mother. But then in the mornings, when she woke him up by jumping on his bed all his doubts were gone and he felt like the happiest man alive.
Brian dropped his bag behind the counter and greeted Kim with a kiss on the cheek.
“Hey you”, the chubby man laughed, “finally unpacked all those boxes so I can come visit?”
He groaned and helped himself to some coffee. He and Kim had met a few years ago in Wisconsin and had become friends instantly. Kim moved to La two years ago and that’s when Brian had decided to move as well. Kim was now the manager of the MAC store and had offered Brian a job, knowing how good he was with make-up.
“The place is a complete mess”, he admitted and sipped his coffee, “I still haven’t had the time to assemble Keira’s wardrobe.”
“The time or the stamina?”, Kim laughed and Brian had to grin as well.
“How is Keira then? I haven’t seen her in ages!”, the store was empty, as usual in the morning and so Kim and Brian took advantage of the quite time to catch up.
“Oh god she’s grown so much”, Brian sighed, “and she’s wearing these terrible clothes and I can’t say anything because she needs to find herself and so on but it’s hard, Kim. It’s really hard!” Kim laughed. “Last week she wore gumboots in the house”, Brain continued his complaining, “and then our wacko neighbour told her that they looked good so now I’m going to have to burn them or something”, he groaned.
“Or you’ll have to take out the neighbour”, Kim grinned.
“Her wardrobe is probably even weirder than Keira’s. What if they gang up on me?”
“Tell me about your weird neighbour”, Kim demanded, “I love hearing about weird people.”
“You are weird people, Kim”, Brian chuckled. “No but she’s really strange. She smells like she smokes 7 packs of cigarettes a day, she thought that today was still the weekend, she has a Russian name that no one can pronounce so she just goes by ‘Katya’ and she’s trans which means she actually chose that name. She dresses like she robbed several thrift stores, and she has like the whitest teeth ever. It’s kinda freaking me out.”
Kim threw her head back and laughed out loud “Welcome to La, Baby. When you think that’s weird, you’re in for a few surprises.”
With these words he went over to the middle-aged woman who had entered the store a few moments ago to offer his help. Brian finished his coffee and started to clean up the already clean counter.
In the afternoon he picked up Keira from school. He had decided to finally get to the wardrobe today and after he heated up some leftovers he disappeared into Keira’s room. At first his daughter watched him as he struggled with various screwdrivers but after fifteen minutes she lost interest. Instead she gabbed some toys and went into the living room.
Brian had no idea how to build stuff and the instructions didn’t really help much but after two hours he had done something that resembled a wardrobe. It was good enough to hold some clothes he decided and started to unpack the boxes. He thought about hiding some particularly hideous pieces but then he thought about how he had to support his daughter more and stored them in the wardrobe.
“Keira?”, he called out as he was finished, “Keira, I’m done, do you wanna look?”. He didn’t get a response. “Keira!”, he called louder this time but still nothing.
“Keira, sweetie”, he went into the living room but she wasn’t there. Panic began to rise inside him and he quickly looked inside the other rooms, calling her name. Then he discovered that the front door was open.
“Keira?!”, he called into the hallway and suddenly he knew where she was. Taking two steps at a time he sprinted up the stairs until he reached the top floor and stood in front of Katya’s door. He knocked onto it almost frantically. After a few seconds she opened it and he was greeted by her incredible smile.
“Brian!”, she exclaimed, “It’s nice to see you. Come in, come in.”
“Is Keira with you?”, he asked out of breath.
“Oh yeah, she came by like 40 minutes ago. Come on.” Katya grabbed his hand and pulled him inside. Her fingers were dry like she needed to moisturise them more often. Brian’s hand was clammy against hers. But she didn’t let go. He let himself be pulled behind her as she led him into what must have been her living room. Right in the centre sat Keira surrounded by lots of different nail polishes. She looked up as they entered the room and grinned as she spotted her father.
“Daddy!”, she exclaimed, “Katya is doing my nails.”
Brian tried to be angry with her, he really did. But it was hard seeing her so happy.
“Keira, Honey! You can’t just run away like that. I was worried! And you can’t just go bothering the neighbours. I’m sure Katya has stuff to do”, he said as sternly as possible.
“I’m sorry”, he turned to Katya but the blonde woman just laughed.
“It’s fine. I can use the company, really.”
“Look, Daddy!”, Keira showed him her little nails. Each was painted in a different colour.
“Very pretty”, he complimented her.
“And I did Katya”, she said and Katya showed him her nails, which were equally colourful. All of them were overdrawn and, honestly, the messy look of them kind of fit. But Keira looked so proud and Katya didn’t seem to mind.
“Oh!”, Keira suddenly made, “Can we do yours now?”, her eyes sparkled with excitement.
Brian hadn’t painted his nails in a long time and he did kind of miss it, so he let himself fall onto the ground with a sigh and stretched his hands out. Keira and Katya grabbed one each and started painting. He could feel Katya’s hand around his again and he watched her as she painted careful strokes of nail polish. He could see that she was concentrating because her tongue was slightly out of her mouth and he could see that she bit down on it. It was adorable.
Keira was done quickly and his nails looked, as expected, terribly. Nevertheless he bent over and kissed the top of her head.
“Thank you, Honey, I love it”, he mumbled and Keira smiled. His left hand, the one that Katya painted, however looked great. Nothing was overdrawn and while he normally wasn’t a fan of multicoloured nails he was kind of digging the look.
“We could head straight to Pride with our rainbow-nails”, he joked and Katya blinked.
Then she grinned.
“Well, maybe not straight”, she said and threw her head back laughing out loud. Her arms flailed and Brian couldn’t help himself but to join. Her laugh was contagious. Even Keira laughed with them, even though Brian was sure that she didn’t understand what they were laughing about.
“I made myself laugh!”, Katya grinned once she had calmed down and Brian smiled at her.
Maybe, he thought, she was kind of nice. She certainly was something else, something new.

What makes a good life? Lessons from the longest study on happiness | Robert Waldinger
Tumblr media
What keeps us healthy and joyful as we go through life? When you have been going to take a position now on your future pleasant self, the place would you put your time and your vigor? There was a up to date survey of millennials asking them what their most important life targets had been, and over eighty percentage mentioned that a primary existence purpose for them was to get rich. And a different 50 percent of those equal younger adults stated that another important lifestyles goal was to end up noted. (Laughter) And we’re constantly informed to lean in to work, to push more difficult and attain extra. We’re given the impact that these are the things that we ought to go after as a way to have a just right lifestyles. Photographs of whole lives, of the decisions that individuals make and how these selections work out for them, these pix are practically unattainable to get. Most of what we know about human life we all know from asking individuals to don’t forget the prior, and as we all know, hindsight is some thing but 20/20. We forget monstrous quantities of what happens to us in lifestyles, and mostly memory is downright ingenious. However what if we could watch complete lives as they unfold by means of time? What if we would be taught men and women from the time that they were young adults all the way into historical age to look what particularly continues folks pleased and healthy? We did that. The Harvard study of adult progress could also be the longest study of adult lifestyles that’s ever been completed. For 75 years, now we have tracked the lives of 724 guys, year after 12 months, asking about their work, their house lives, their wellness, and of course asking all along the best way without understanding how their lifestyles studies have been going to prove. Stories like this are particularly infrequent. Virtually all tasks of this style fall apart inside a decade considering the fact that too many folks drop out of the study, or funding for the study dries up, or the researchers get distracted, or they die, and no one moves the ball additional down the discipline. But through a combination of success and the persistence of a couple of generations of researchers, this be trained has survived. About 60 of our normal 724 guys are still alive, nonetheless taking part in the be taught, most of them of their 90s. And we at the moment are beginning to be trained the more than 2,000 children of those guys. And i am the fourth director of the gain knowledge of. On the grounds that 1938, now we have tracked the lives of two organizations of men. The primary crew started in the learn once they have been sophomores at Harvard tuition. They all finished institution for the duration of World warfare II, after which most went off to serve within the battle. And the 2d staff that we’ve adopted was a gaggle of boys from Boston’s poorest neighborhoods, boys who had been chosen for the be trained particularly for the reason that they have been from one of the most stricken and disadvantaged households within the Boston of the 1930s.Most lived in tenements, many without hot and cold running water. Once they entered the learn, all of those young adults have been interviewed. They got clinical tests. We went to their properties and we interviewed their mother and father. And then these teenagers grew up into adults who entered all walks of life. They grew to be manufacturing unit employees and legal professionals and bricklayers and medical professionals, one President of the U.S.. Some developed alcoholism. Just a few developed schizophrenia. Some climbed the social ladder from the bottom all the way to the very top, and some made that trip in the opposite path. The founders of this study would on no account in their wildest dreams have imagined that i might be standing here in these days, 75 years later, telling you that the gain knowledge of still continues. Every two years, our sufferer and dedicated research staff calls up our men and asks them if we are able to send them but a different set of questions about their lives. Many of the inside metropolis Boston guys ask us, "Why do you preserve wanting to gain knowledge of me? My lifestyles simply isn’t that fascinating." The Harvard men on no account ask that question. (Laughter) To get the clearest picture of these lives, we do not just send them questionnaires. We interview them of their residing rooms. We get their clinical files from their medical professionals. We draw their blood, we scan their brains, we talk to their children. We videotape them speakme with their wives about their deepest concerns. And when, about a decade in the past, we in the end requested the better halves if they might become a member of us as members of the learn, the various women stated, "you know, it can be about time." (Laughter) So what have we learned? What are the teachings that come from the tens of countless numbers of pages of information that we’ve generated on these lives? Well, the teachings don’t seem to be about wealth or repute or working tougher and more difficult. The clearest message that we get from this seventy five-yr study is this: excellent relationships maintain us happier and more healthy. Period. We now have realized three significant classes about relationships. The first is that social connections are really excellent for us, and that loneliness kills. It turns out that persons who are more socially connected to household, to pals, to community, are happier, they’re bodily healthier, and so they outlast people who’re much less good connected. And the experience of loneliness turns out to be poisonous. Folks who are more remoted than they wish to be from others to find that they are less blissful, their health declines earlier in midlife, their brain functioning declines faster and so they reside shorter lives than men and women who are not lonely. And the unhappy reality is that at any given time, a couple of in five american citizens will document that they are lonely. And we know you could be lonely in a crowd and that you may be lonely in a marriage, so the 2d large lesson that we realized is that it’s now not just the number of neighbors you have, and it’s now not whether or not you are in a dedicated relationship, nevertheless it’s the nice of your close relationships that issues. It seems that living in the middle of conflict is quite dangerous for our wellbeing. High-conflict marriages, for illustration, without much affection, become very bad for our well being, might be worse than getting divorced. And residing in the course of excellent, warm relationships is protecting. When we had adopted our guys all the method into their 80s, we wanted to seem again at them at midlife and to see if we could predict who was going to develop right into a completely happy, healthful octogenarian and who wasn’t. And after we gathered collectively the whole lot we knew about them at age 50, it wasn’t their middle age ldl cholesterol phases that estimated how they had been going to grow old. It was how satisfied they had been in their relationships. The humans who had been probably the most satisfied in their relationships at age 50 were the healthiest at age eighty. And excellent, close relationships look to buffer us from one of the slings and arrows of getting ancient. Our most fortunately partnered guys and females pronounced, of their 80s, that on the times when they had more physical anguish, their mood stayed simply as comfortable. But the individuals who were in sad relationships, on the days once they pronounced extra bodily pain, it was magnified through extra emotional discomfort. And the third big lesson that we discovered about relationships and our wellness is that excellent relationships don’t just defend our our bodies, they protect our brains. It seems that being in a securely hooked up relationship to an additional individual on your 80s is protective, that the people who’re in relationships where they quite feel they can rely on the other individual in times of need, these folks’s recollections keep sharper longer. And the humans in relationships the place they think they fairly can not rely on the opposite one, those are the persons who experience prior reminiscence decline. And those just right relationships, they don’t ought to be delicate at all times. A few of our octogenarian couples might bicker with each different day in and day trip, but as long as they felt that they would rather depend on the other when the going got hard, those arguments failed to take a toll on their recollections. So this message, that excellent, shut relationships are good for our wellbeing and good-being, this is knowledge that’s as historic as the hills. Why is that this so rough to get and so easy to disregard? Well, we’re human. What we’d quite like is a speedy repair, whatever we are able to get that’ll make our lives just right and hold them that method. Relationships are messy and so they’re complicated and the hard work of tending to household and buddies, it’s now not attractive or glamorous. It is usually lifelong. It on no account ends. The individuals in our seventy five-12 months study who had been the happiest in retirement had been the folks who had actively worked to interchange workmates with new playmates. Just like the millennials in that recent survey, many of our men when they had been opening out as young adults particularly believed that reputation and wealth and excessive fulfillment had been what they wanted to go after to have a good lifestyles. However again and again, over these 75 years, our be trained has shown that the men and women who fared the exceptional have been the humans who leaned in to relationships, with household, with friends, with group. So what about you? Shall we embrace you’re 25, or you’re 40, or you’re 60. What could leaning in to relationships even look like? Well, the possibilities are practically never-ending. It possibly anything so simple as exchanging reveal time with individuals time or livening up a stale relationship through doing some thing new together, lengthy walks or date nights, or attaining out to that family member who you haven’t spoken to in years, since these all-too-usual family feuds take a horrible toll on the persons who hold the grudges.I would like to shut with a quote from Mark Twain. More than a century in the past, he used to be watching back on his lifestyles, and he wrote this: "There isn’t time, so transient is existence, for bickerings, apologies, heartburnings, callings to account. There may be simplest time for loving, and but an immediate, as a way to communicate, for that." the great life is built with excellent relationships. Thank you. (Applause) .

What maintains us healthy and completely satisfied as we go by way of existence? In the event you were going to invest now on your future exceptional self, where would you set your time and your energy? There was a contemporary survey of millennials asking them what their major life targets were, and over eighty percent said that a predominant life goal for them was to get rich. And a different 50 percentage of those equal young adults stated that one more main life intention was to emerge as famous. (Laughter) And we’re always told to lean in to work, to push tougher and reap extra. We’re given the influence that these are the things that we must go after in order to have a just right lifestyles. Portraits of complete lives, of the selections that humans make and the way those choices work out for them, those portraits are nearly unimaginable to get. Most of what we know about human life we all know from asking persons to don’t forget the prior, and as we all know, hindsight is whatever however 20/20. We overlook significant quantities of what happens to us in existence, and routinely memory is downright inventive. But what if we could watch complete lives as they unfold via time? What if we might gain knowledge of individuals from the time that they had been young adults the entire way into old age to look what fairly maintains people pleased and healthy? We did that. The Harvard gain knowledge of of adult progress could also be the longest learn of adult existence that is ever been executed. For seventy five years, we have now tracked the lives of 724 guys, yr after yr, asking about their work, their home lives, their health, and of direction asking all along the way in which without knowing how their life reports were going to turn out. Experiences like this are quite infrequent. Virtually all projects of this form fall apart within a decade considering the fact that too many men and women drop out of the study, or funding for the study dries up, or the researchers get distracted, or they die, and no one moves the ball further down the field. However via a blend of luck and the persistence of several generations of researchers, this be trained has survived. About 60 of our customary 724 guys are nonetheless alive, nonetheless taking part in the be trained, most of them in their 90s. And we at the moment are establishing to learn the more than 2,000 kids of these guys. And i’m the fourth director of the be taught. Due to the fact that 1938, now we have tracked the lives of two agencies of men. The first team began in the be trained when they had been sophomores at Harvard college. All of them completed university throughout World warfare II, and then most went off to serve in the battle. And the second workforce that we now have followed was once a group of boys from Boston’s poorest neighborhoods, boys who had been chosen for the study specifically due to the fact they had been from one of the crucial most afflicted and deprived families in the Boston of the 1930s.Most lived in tenements, many with out sizzling and bloodless walking water. After they entered the learn, all of those teens had been interviewed. They got clinical tests. We went to their houses and we interviewed their mothers and fathers. After which these teenagers grew up into adults who entered all walks of lifestyles. They grew to be factory staff and attorneys and bricklayers and doctors, one President of the us. Some developed alcoholism. Just a few developed schizophrenia. Some climbed the social ladder from the bottom all the technique to the very top, and a few made that journey in the reverse direction. The founders of this learn would certainly not of their wildest dreams have imagined that i would be standing right here in these days, 75 years later, telling you that the be taught still continues. Every two years, our sufferer and committed study employees calls up our men and asks them if we are able to send them yet yet another set of questions about their lives. Some of the inside metropolis Boston men ask us, "Why do you preserve looking to gain knowledge of me? My existence simply is not that exciting." The Harvard men certainly not ask that query. (Laughter) To get the clearest image of these lives, we do not just ship them questionnaires. We interview them in their dwelling rooms. We get their clinical documents from their medical professionals. We draw their blood, we scan their brains, we talk to their children. We videotape them talking with their wives about their deepest concerns. And when, a couple of decade in the past, we finally asked the better halves if they might join us as individuals of the be trained, some of the females stated, "you know, it is about time." (Laughter) So what have we learned? What are the lessons that come from the tens of hundreds of thousands of pages of knowledge that we now have generated on these lives? Good, the teachings don’t seem to be about wealth or fame or working more difficult and tougher. And the folks in relationships the place they feel they really can’t depend on the opposite one, those are the individuals who experience prior memory decline. And people just right relationships, they do not need to be soft all the time. Some of our octogenarian couples might bicker with every different day in and day trip, however as long as they felt that they could quite count on the other when the going got difficult, these arguments failed to take a toll on their reminiscences. So this message, that excellent, close relationships are just right for our wellness and good-being, this is knowledge that’s as historic as the hills. Why is that this so hard to get and so effortless to disregard? Well, we’re human. Relationships are messy and so they’re tricky and the hard work of tending to loved ones and buddies, it’s now not sexy or glamorous. It is usually lifelong. It in no way ends. Enough- A Sirius Black Imagine
A/N: Hey there guys. Here is a little thing I’m pulling from my archive of writings. I wrote this a while back for @princesse-de-ravenclaw and am finally getting around to posting it. Figured I’d get something out to you guys because it might be a while before I post any other work that has not been written yet. I’ll try my best but I make no promises, to which I’m sorry. I hope you don’t mind that it’s kinda short. Enjoy.
Tumblr media
The grass felt soft and slightly cool against your smooth skin as you laid down, however you were far too frustrated to enjoy any of it at the moment. You simply huffed for what seemed to be the sixth time in the last half hour and stared up at the sky above you. It was slowly growing darker, and closer to dinner as your stomach growled in slight hunger. You thought about giving up and just heading back to the castle, but you were never one to give in without a fight.
Thus you took in a deep breath and rose to your feet. You pulled out your wand, raising it with all the confidence you could muster.
"Come on, just do it. Think of your happiest thought. Every other one of your friends can do this, don't disappoint them."
You steeled yourself and mentally leafed through all your memories until you found one you thought would be sufficient.
"Expecto patronum." You swished your wand and felt a small wisp of power flow through but died as soon as it left the tip.
"Concentrate, damn it. Expecto patronum." You repeated with a bit more gusto, yet still nothing.
"Expecto patronum!" You shrieked, now far too aggravated to perform the spell but you still attempted.
Groaning loudly you stopped and tossed your wand to the ground, near your bag and began pacing. You ran a hand through your hair and thought about everything you could be doing wrong.
“I have the wand movement down, I am pronouncing it correctly--I’ve checked twice! I am thinking of the happiest thing I can, why isn’t this working!?” Seemingly too exhausted and dejected, you sat down and pulled your knees closer to your chest.
You were lost in thought, pitifully thinking about how much of a poor witch you must be when you heard him.
“Knut for your thoughts, love?”
“Go away, Black. I’m not in the mood.” You responded sharply, and he simply chuckled.
“You never seem to be in the mood. That’s never stopped me before.” Even staring straight ahead at the Black Lake, you could hear the smug grin on his face.
“Seriously, piss off.” You snapped and turned to grab a few nearby pebbles to skip across the water.
You began throwing them, each skipping at least three times before sinking into the depths of the lake. After a few moments, you stopped and looked down at the smooth rock now twirling idly in your hands.
You took in a shaky breath and asked, just above a whisper, “Sirius--how do you know when you’re happy enough?”
Sirius looked at you, confused as to the random question. He paused and smirked halfheartedly, “if you have to ask, I don’t think you are, love.”
A deeper sadness settled in the bottom of your chest. He always took things as a joke, why should this be any different? You felt your eyes betray you as they filled with unwanted tears. You sniffed softly, and closed your eyes, determined to keep them at bay.
“I suppose you’re right. It was stupid to even ask. Nevermind then.” You moved to start packing your things, suddenly not feeling hungry anymore but wanting to return to the castle anyways.
Sirius stilled as he looked at you. He’s never heard you sound so small, so defeated, so-- sad. Before his brain caught up with his body, he reached out and softly grabbed your wrist.
“You’re not, er, happy?”
Slowly you opened your eyes, and looked up at him. He looked at you with an uncertainty you’ve never seen from the dark haired boy. Feeling the sharp prick of tears again you turned your head away and tried to pull yourself from his grasp.
He held on firmly though, and lifted your chin slightly to reach his eyes again. “What’s wrong?”
“I--,” you paused, unsure as to whether or not you should confess something so trivial to someone who already had it under his belt. “I can’t produce a patronus. Not even a wisp! I know I have the technicalities down, I just don’t think I have any memory that is happy enough. I’ve thought of everything, but I still come up short.”
He smiled gently and started to chuckle, seemingly very amused with the whole situation. “That’s all?”
“What do you mean ‘that’s all!’ Not all of us can be like you, you know. I’m not a good witch, I’m just- you know what, forget it. I knew I shouldn’t have said anything.” You pulled away and started back on gathering up your supplies.
For a second time, he grabbed your wrist. “I didn’t mean it like that, I just meant that casting a patronus isn’t a big deal. I’m sure you have lots of happy memories. You’re just too mixed up to sort through them all.” He paused, “I could help you if you’d like?”
Your brain screeched to a halt at the thought of him helping you. Surely, you’d die of embarrassment. Although, he had produced his patronus so easily in Defense class; maybe it wouldn’t be such a bad idea. After all, what else did you have to lose?
“Fine.”
A broad grin grew on his face and he abruptly stood. “Alright then, darling. Let’s do this.”
You looked up at him--his arm extended out to you, a cheeky yet reassuring smile on his face, his hair blowing gently in the wind. You took his hand and he pulled you to your feet, so you now stood inches from him.
His eyes sparkled with excitement and something just so very happy that it seemed to pour into you. You felt a warmth spread from his body into yours, starting with your intertwined hands and traveled throughout your whole being.
You smiled softly, looking up at him and felt at peace. Maybe--you thought.
Maybe you had a happy enough memory after all.

hello sobs could you please spell out your name in all the different phonetic ways it could be because I cannot think of it in any way but popsicles but I want that Big Brained Energy of reading it like a Greek name but I am Also Very Dumb please and thank you
okay, so. as far as i know, this is what we've got.
the people who pronounce it the same way you would say popsicles (and i am in this group, if that matters), which is like this: sob-sick-els
the people who pronounce it the same way you would pronounce socrates the greek philosopher (which is pretty awesome, if i do say so myself), which is like this: sob-sick-el-ees
there has now been an addition of someone who will use the french pronunciation, which i have no idea how that would sound, but i like it on principle alone.
and, as always, there's the additional option of just calling me "sobs" like a lil nickname, so there's that.
however makes your brain happiest is my motto, so have fun :)
