:o could you make a text tutorial on the best ways to bleach hair at home? my hair is a natural light brown but i have always wanted an almost platinum
Hey anon! Of course I can - I’ve tried to cover all bases, including how to make your hair bleach ready and to keep it shiny after, so I hope this helps!
Tumblr media
Bee’s tips for at home hair bleaching!
First off, a disclaimer: everyone’s hair is different, and what works a treat for some can be ineffective for others. I’m not a professional! Just someone whose done a lot of a at home dying and styling, and has been rocking the bleached pastels for almost three years now. It’s advisable to go to a good salon and ask for a consultation (most stylists will do this, especially if you’re a regular) to assess your hair and how well it will respond to bleach.
Assess the strength and quality of your hair. For the best results and to minimise damage and breakage hair should be untreated and strong before bleaching. If you have split ends, a lot of frizz, very thin hair or hair that easily snaps, for example, a good cut or trim and a keratin mask will be in order before you attempt bleach. Avoiding or cutting back on blow drying, straightening and curling your hair for a while before bleaching will also help keep it strong. If you’ve dyed, permed or chemically treated your hair in the last six months bleaching your hair is not advisable. Also bleaching over hair that’s already dyed can lead to some awful green or orange mishmashes so it’s best not to do that. My hair is very thick and holds style, so it handles the bleach well but I also wear it short which means I’m constantly getting it trimmed: that helps keep it an a good condition! Remember that very dark hair may need a few applications of bleach, whilst lighter hair will lift much faster. It’s important to know your hair type before buying and bleaching.
Make sure you have the right tools and products. If you aren’t already, invest in a sulfate free shampoo and conditioner: sulfates ‘clean’ your hair by stripping it and are in most big brand products, but are actually awful for your hair. Using a sulfate free will not only be gentler and better for your hair, it’s much better for maintaining colour as you’re not stripping it constantly. I use OGX’s Fade Defy, but there are a tonne of options out there now. Make sure to be a good quality bleach. Like @sweet-teeth-mfs I would recommend Bleach London’s ‘Total Bleach’ (along with all their products tbh) but I’d also suggest researching what product might be best for your hair type and colour. If you’re bleaching for the first time and your hair is long or very thick, you may need a couple of packs. You’ll also need a hairdressing cape, gloves and dye brush for the application. Oh, and PATCH TEST YOUR PRODUCTS. Apply a small amount of your bleach and any toners to your skin a day or two before you are going to do your hair to make sure you’re not allergic.
Prep your head and hair. Some stylists insist on a strand test, to see how the bleach will lift your hair and to avoid that awful yellow bleach we all saw in the mid 2000’s. With the dawn of toners, this is less of an issue but you may want to do it regardless. Before you begin make sure you have towels and cotton wool at the ready, and use barrier cream (or Vaseline) along your hairline, the back of your neck and ears to protect your skin. As a rule, you should apply bleach to unwashed hair (shampoo can strip your hairs essential oils and thus your more likely to get breakage and irritation) but double check the instructions on your chosen product. Some stylists also recommend soaking your hair in coconut oil the night before a bleach. I don’t do this, but I do use a lot of products with coconut in between bleaches (which I’ll mention later!). Don’t be tempted to leave the bleach on for any longer than advised, so make sure you have a timer.
Once you’ve mixed your bleach, apply to the lengths of your hair first. When bleaching for the first time, you want to start from bottom and work up - the heat from your head will mean the bleach develops faster on your roots. Section your hair and begin with bottom (starting at the back is best if your doing it yourself, as it’s hard to reach!). Once you’ve applied the bleach to your lengths, let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes and then begin applying to the roots. This should ensure that you have an even colour all over. Note this is just for first time bleaching. If you’re already bleached/platinum, you just need to focus on your roots and then work the bleach through toward the end of the time to lift any remaining colour or toner.
Keep your head warm! Heat helps bleach develop and work it’s magic, so put a shower cap, plastic bag or plastic hairdressing cap over your head once you’ve fully applied the bleach.
Keep an eye on the time. Don’t leave the bleach on for any longer than is stated in the product instructions: usually this is 30 - 45 minutes. You can keep checking your hair periodically to see how it’s lifting. Some stylists also recommend massaging the hair midway through to keep the bleach from drying out and making sure it’s evenly distributed, which we usually do with mine. Just make sure you have your gloves on!
Wash the bleach off. Once the time is up, use warm (but not too hot, it’ll hurt your scalp) water to shampoo and condition your hair - I’d recommend using OGX’s coconut range for this, or sulfate free keratin or protein products.
Dry it! If you have the time, gently towel off your hair and let it dry naturally. If you don’t, use a hairdryer on a very low setting to dry your hair without damaging it.
More bleach? Depending on your hair type and colour, you might need more than one application of bleach to be able to get to a platinum. As my hair is very dark it’s usually very yellow/orange after the first bleach and needs a second application to reach that platinum goal. If so, once dry, follow the above steps and reapply the bleach. If your hair feels overly fragile or you can see a lot of breakage, it might be best to give your hair some TLC and wait a day or two before doing this. Don’t worry if you get some little bits of breakage or wisps as your drying off - this is natural. But if the strands themselves seemed weakened, then don’t reapply.
Toner time! Once your hair is light enough, it’s time to get that platinum or pastel goodness. If your hair has any yellow or brassiness to it, the toner won’t work: you need to have a nice ice white base, ideally. Apply a white toner to your hair for ten to fifteen minutes - this will knock all that nasty yellowness out of your hair and hopefully leave it nice and snowy. Toner should be applied quickly and in one go to ensure even colour - I put the toner directly on gloved hands and apply it like a hair mask - as they begin to work as soon as they hit your hair. Then where you choose to go next is up to you! I cycle between grey or silver and pastels (pink, blue and purple mostly). These aren’t like permanent hair colours, and won’t last more than a few washes but can be maintained by coloured shampoos. Also, they, as a rule, aren’t damaging to your hair so you can do them often! For soft, pastelised colour you can mix toner with a little conditioner or leave on for just 10 to 15 minutes. For bolder or deeper colours, leave to develop for 20 to 30 minutes.
After care. Bleaching, even when done right, is rough going on your scalp and hair. You need to follow it up with a product that helps repair and strengthen your hair so it doesn’t break, or go limp and frizzy. As mentioned before, I swear by Olaplex. It’s full of sciencey goodness and will repair the bonds of your hair, keeping it strong and healthy whilst also maintaining colour. Their no.1 and no.2 are only for salon use, but their no.3 treatment is available online (or can be bought directly from a salon) and should be applied after you’ve done your toner. For best results, leave it on overnight and wash it off in the morning - the longer you leave it on, the better it will be for your hair. They now do a shampoo, conditioner and a styler too. Olaplex is pricey, but I can vouch for it being amazingly good - however, products like L’Oréal’s Smart Bond are a good dupe. To ensure your hair doesn’t break and is healthy, you need to use a product like this that repairs bonds after you’ve bleached.
Upkeep. To make sure that your hair stays bouncy and beautiful between bleaches, you need to use the right products to keep it so. Using sulfate free shampoo and conditioner, as I mentioned, will not only be kind to your hair but will stop toners from instantly washing out too. I use a coconut mask once a week between shampooing and conditioning to keep my hair hydrated, and occasionally a keratin or protein mask if I feel it needs it. Using moisturing styling products, like Lee Stafford’s CocoLoco range (which I love!) or products with argan oil, will also help: this won’t repair your hair, but keeping it mositurised will help keep it shiny, soft and protected. I’d also highly recommend getting a UV protection spray, especially for the summer, and sleeping on a silk pillowcase or with hair turban to prevent tangling and breakage in the night. If you’re going for ice white or platinum, using lavender or purple shampoo’s will help maintain the colour and prevent any yellowness.
As I said at the start, bleaching works differently for everyone and there is always a risk that you might damage your hair so you do need to be careful and choose the right products for your hair type. However, with the wonders of modern technology having and maintaining ice white, platinum, silver and pastel hair is very doable and doesn’t have to mean broken, battered locks! If in doubt, go to salon - if you think your hair wouldn’t manage the bleach or is in poor condition, an olaplex treatment on damaged hair can work wonders! A lot of people now choose to visit a salon for their first bleach - which is generally the hardest and most time consuming - then maintain at home with store bought products and toners/colours.
I hope you find this useful, and I wish you (and anyone else) luck in the quest for awesome idol worthy hair.

Damaged Hair Fixes with a Cult Following
New Post has been published on https://wholerestart.com/damaged-hair-fixes-with-a-cult-following/
Damaged Hair Fixes with a Cult Following
Tumblr media
Looking to get soft luscious locks? Let me share the damaged hair fixes with a cult following on Amazon that are also naturally better for your hair. Most of these are inexpensive and their users RAVE about them.
Plus they are all products that I use and believe in. They support a healthy and natural routine by not using harmful ingredients or by removing harmful ingredients.
These focus on what you put on your hair, how you style your hair, and what you put in your body that feeds your hair.
Not a sulfate, silicone, phthalate insight!
So let’s get started!
Tumblr media
AquaBliss High Output 12-Stage Shower Filter – Reduces Dry Itchy Skin, Dandruff, Eczema, and Dramatically Improves The Condition of Your Skin, Hair and Nails – Chrome (SF100)
You will not believe what a difference this little device makes! Not to mention it is so easy to install it took me less than 10 minutes to add it to my current shower.
Plus it is very inexpensive and depending on how much water you use one filter could last you as long as an entire year.
I have a water softener and still use this!
Tumblr media
2. Briogeo – Rosarco Blow Dry Perfection and Heat Protectant Crème, Weightless Blow-Dry Finishing and Heat Protectant Cream for Dry, Damaged, Chemically-Treated, or Heat-Styled Hair, 4 oz.
Dry hair can be caused by heat styling. Whether you are firing up your blow dryer, flat ironing, or curling.
Turn down your hot styling tools and use a heat protectant on your wet hair before you add any heat.
This one is lightweight, has natural products that will soften, and protect your hair.
No silicones, phthalates, sulfates or any other damaging ingredients.
Tumblr media
3. Olaplex Hair Perfector No 3 Repairing Treatment, 3.3 Fl Oz.
If you have been styling your hair with heat, perming, relaxing, coloring, sitting in the sun or a hundred other damaging things Olaplex is the go-to for repairing your broken disulfide bonds.
This little treatment I use every week. I leave it in my hair for about an hour with a really cute shower cap on my head.
My kids think I’m crazy but this has improved my hair health by leaps and bounds.
After the treatment, my natural curls look amazing. Without it, they look like a frizzy mess.
So, on the weekends I treat my hair with Olaplex and then let it air dry curly.
Tumblr media
4. KIPOZI Flat Iron 1 Inch Titanium Plates Professional Hair Straightener with Adjustable Temperature Suitable for All Hair Types Makes Hair Shiny and Silky Heats Up Fast Dual Voltage Rose Pink.
With the titanium plates and heat adjustable setting it’s no wonder people love this flat iron.
The price tag is better than most of the high-end brands. Titanium is key to avoiding heat damage which leads to dry brittle hair.
This allows for heating of the inside of the hair strand out to retain your hairs natural moisture.
Tumblr media
5. OUAI Wave Spray 1.7 oz. Mini Size.
This stuff I love. I have been committed to letting my hair air dry at least once per week.
This was a Best in Beauty Award winner because it actually does what it says.
It makes your hair naturally dry in pretty waves without feeling icky and sticky.
What? A product that actually does what it says it does? Its a bit pricy but a small bottle lasts a long time since you don’t need a lot.
Tumblr media
6. CURLY HAIR SOLUTIONS – Curl Keeper Original: Total Control for Frizzy Hair (12 oz)
Amazing, this gel actually defines curls without the crunch.
You can watch this YouTube video by Bianca Renee for her review of this product.
If your hair is naturally curly or wavy and you’ve become a heat junkie, it might be time to let those curls out.
Tumblr media
7. Great Lakes Gelatin, Certified Paleo Friendly, Pasture-Raised Grass-Fed, Collagen Hydrolysate, Collagen Peptides, Non GMO, 16 oz, 2-Pack, Frustration Free Packaging.
No you don’t put this on your hair!  Protein is the building block of all healthy hair.
Collagen Hydrolysate is easy to add to your morning smoothie, coffee, brownie mix, or really anything you might ingest.  It is tasteless!
This article from Healthline explains some of the benefits for hair but it is also good for skin and nails.  You can try it in my favorite smoothie recipe here.
Tumblr media
8. Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer Iron/Fuchsia
This little hairdryer has a lot going for it.
It has smart technology that measures the temperature of the air 20 times per minute to evaluate whether the dryer is too hot.
This cuts down on heat damage to the hair. It is also extremely quiet and fast.
My hair is shiny and smooth when I am done with my blowout.

Silk18 Natural Hair Conditioner Argan Oil Sulfate Free Treatment for Dry and Damaged Hair Silk Amino Acids Jojoba & Keratin All Hair Types Women & Men & Teens Safe for Color Treated Hair 8 Ounce
This conditioner! Oh, how I love it. It is completely natural. It is difficult to find a good conditioner that has no silicone.
Most manufacturers like to coat your hair with silicone because initially, it will make you hair look great.
The problem? Silicone builds up on the hair over time and can make it dull, limp, and dry.
This conditioner uses naturally moisturizing ingredients to improve the health of your hair rather than put a coating on it to make it look like it’s getting better.
Well, that’s it! These are some of the items I use every week like clockwork to combat my dry frizzy hair. It has made a world of difference.
Do you have other things that work for you? Leave a comment in the comment section, share the love!

Hair care routine?
Before showering Olaplex hair masks once a week and I'm starting to do the rice water hair masks as well. If I‘m not doing a hair mask I’ll sit with some coconut oil or castor oil in my hair before my shower. In the shower I use the blonde Brilliance purple shampoo. After the shower when my hair is damp I use IGK mistress leave-in conditioner, argan magic split ends repair cream, pureology serious colour care spray, and then at the ends some Macadamia oil. then when my hair is dry I spray in my Label.M protein spray and heat protectant. LOL blonde is a nightmare to take care of.

{Moroccan Argan Oil Beauty|Top 12 Benefits Of Laser Hair Removal For Men|Argan Oil Vs Jojoba Oil.
Because most women suffer from a Vitamin B or Biotin deficiency, which can trigger hair loss, Keranique designed an advanced formula that contains Keratin and Pro Vitamin B5. The hero ingredient in this bottle is the only ingredient in this bottle: pure, organic Argan Oil packed with vitamin e and omega-6 fatty acids. I use this as a treatment for my hair, it has no silicon so its a good healthy alternative to a lot of moroccan oil products out there and gives my curls a bit of a boost. Natural Argan oil smells nutty, with an almost warm popcorn aroma. My recommendation with oils is generally to leave them on overnight, since with argan oil, your main job is to allow the vitamin E to soak in and be thoroughly absorbed into the skin where it can prevent acne. Our special hair serum,Hair Magick, is a total repair serum with 40% of pure Argan Oil blended with other natural oils. Simply put a few drops of oil in your palm, along with a few drops of essential oils for added benefits (use peppermint for dry hair, lavender for fine to normal, or lemon for golden highlights) and rub your hands together. If it does, I recommend trying pure argan oil or extra virgin coconut oil. Applying Vitamin E oil regularly can significantly reduce the risk of cracking or breaking a nail. After applying Actually Organic's argan oil in my hair after my shower, brushing it became so much easier. A high Vitamin E content in argan oil hair treatment salon selectives oil helps remove damaged cells and encourages new ones to grow, thus fading acne scars. The Vitamin E in the oil helps to increase the elasticity of the skin while lightening scarring, so current stretch marks can be lightened while developing additional stretch marks is less likely. Thought to strengthen nails, argan oil is sometimes recommended for treatment of brittle nails. To condition, I work the oil between my hands and smooth up to, but not all the way to the root, on my damp hair after a shower and leave overnight to give it time to work its magic. Enriched with Proteins derived from plants and olive oil, this concentrated treatment hydrates from root to tip to repel dehydration, calms frizz, and prevents static, making hair easier to detangle. Before washing out the mask, put conditioner on your hair to help break down the oil, which makes it easier to wash out. Cold-pressed, organic and rich in natural fatty acids, vitamin E and omega-6, this antioxidant powerhouse combats frizzy hair, dry scalp, split ends, breakage and dull hair appearance. If you are looking to promote hair growth, there are various effective shampoos and conditioners available that can have positive effects. From my hair treatment, to shampoos to styling products and creams, I regularly use Argan Oil on a daily basis. It repairs dry damaged hair and split-ends. This specialized shampoo features an argan keratin hair treatment with Vitamins A, B1, B2, D, & E to increase the strength of hair and eliminate frizz. So now it's time for you to relax and read this article on our page , which will present to you some advantages of propolis for your overall health, your skin along with your hair. While you can use Viva Naturals Organic Jojoba Oil on its own - and it comes in an easy-to-use pump spray bottle - you can also combine it with your favorite hair care product to bring moisture back to your hair while preventing it from becoming dry and brittle. The best value proposition is Honest Amish Classic Beard Oil , which gives you the vitamin-rich goodness of avocado, pumpkin and almond oils at less than $7 an ounce. As mentioned, Argan oil contains a high level of fatty acids, in fact, it is comprised of roughly 80% fatty acids which work wonders to erase signs of premature aging. Compared to grapeseed oil or sea buckthorn oil, top quality argan oils are very easy to find. Ingredients: pure, unadulterated, cold pressed, undeodorized, virgin, organic argania spinosa (argan oil). I normally always read the ingredients of products I buy (food and cosmetics) but on the tiny sample bottle my mother uses I didn't see any ingredients and then I just assumed the MoroccanOil is a good and healthy product. Relieves Dry, Itchy And Oily Scalps. In fact, argan oil and Moroccan oil both contain argan oil—so they really are essentially the same thing. In any case, it's the minoxidil that helps curb hair loss and not the propylene glycol. Khadavi told us that a third of my patients get irritated from minoxidil products because of propylene glycol," we decided to cut any treatments with it. An excellent source of vitamin E, walnuts provide a crunchy and satisfying way to give your hair the oils it needs to stay full of shine and luster. This blend is not only meant to smell nice it also infuses all the benefits of each oil to nicely complement the argan oil. All these oils have skin regenerative properties which renew skin cells at a faster rate and exfoliates dead cells which ultimately lightens the dark spots. There are basically two ways to go about treating your hair with it: you can buy a conditioning product which has argan oil within the formula, or you can buy pure argan oil for your hair.

I can’t believe another month is gone! Where is this year going? I had a great month and used up a ton of products. I am killing the empty game this year, so I can’t wait to share what I used up this month! Make sure to let me know in the comments below what you used up this past month! P.S. I’m trying out a new layout for this post this month, so make sure you let me know what you think of this type of empties post please! 🙂
  hair.
+ Suave Rosemary + Mint Conditioner, 28 FL OZ ($3.94). I’ve used up a ton of these before. They’re really good, especially for the price. I definitely recommend them, and I’ll definitely repurchase. Plus, it smells so incredible! + vo5 Island Coconut Moisturizing Shampoo, 12.5 FL OZ ($5.91). My husband actually used this up. He liked it. He prefers slightly higher end shampoos, but he is trying to go through the small stash that we have of these leftover from our apartment days. I personally am not a fan, but I love the scent of this. + PINK Beach Hair But Better Wave Spray, 8 FL OZ ($14.50). This is actually no longer available, but it was a pretty decent wave spray. They had this as part of their most recent Semi-Annual sale for like, $5, and I seriously debated grabbing some more, but I couldn’t bring myself to do it. I didn’t LOVE this spray, but it worked for daily life. + American Wave Glint Texture & Shine Spray, 6.7 FL OZ ($30.00). I got this in a limited edition of some sort, and when I first tried it I absolutely hated it. But the more I used it, the more I loved it and now I’m obsessed. It gives some nice volume, and it does add a beautiful sheen to my hair. I definitely recommend. + Schwarzkopf GLISS Hair Repair Ultimate Repair Conditioner, 13.6 FL OZ ($5.47). I really like this conditioner, and I am loving that price. It works well, it makes my hair super smooth and I don’t notice any issues with my coloring since I do dye my hair. I’ll definitely be grabbing a few more bottles of this! + Renpure Advanced Tea Tree & Lemon Sage Shampoo, 3.4 FL OZ ($2.99). This was pretty good. I loved the scent, and it really did feel invigorating. It was great to use in the morning, and I would grab this again. + Renpure Advanced Tea Tree & Lemon Sage Conditioner, 3.4 FL OZ ($2.99). I didn’t love this as much as the shampoo. It was okay, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to hunt this down in stores. + HASK Orchid & White Truffle Moisture Rich Deep Conditioner, 1.75 FL OZ ($1.77). This made my hair feel so amazing. It smelled great, and there is a lot of product in this little sample sized packet. I love that you can buy these in one-time uses – it’s really convenient! + Garnier Whole Blends Honey Treasures Repairing Mask, 0.6 FL OZ ($0.32). There wasn’t really enough product in this sample for me to really test, so unfortunately I don’t really have an opinion since I had to mix this with another hair mask. + Christophe Robin Cleansing Volumizing Paste, 1.35 FL OZ ($8.58). This was kind of an odd-ball product to me. I don’t quite get the point, but my hair felt incredible after using this. It was similar to a scalp scrub, I suppose. I’d definitely buy the full size. + Redken Extreme Shampoo, 1.7 FL OZ ($5.99). This was a nice basic shampoo, but didn’t do anything crazy to my hair. I think it would be really good for low matience hair people. + Kenra Luxe One Leave-In, 1 FL OZ ($5.00). This little guy worked really well. I have another sample of this that I will happily use. This made my hair feel very lush and soft. I would definitely buy this in the full size. + Alterna Caviar CC Cream Leave-In Hair Perfecter, 0.85 FL OZ ($8.84). This is really good. I’ve gone through so many of these travel size tubes. This is always what I use in between trying new leave in treatments. This is always my go-to!
body.
+ Bath & Body Works French Lavender & Honey Shower Gel, 10 FL OZ ($12.50). Love this! I normally love Bath & Body Works shower gels, but this scent is one of my all time favorites. It’s so relaxing and luxurious. I will always repurchase. + Fortune Cookie Soap Time To Shine Shimmer Body Wash, 7 OZ ($10.99). This was a cute concept. It’s shaped like a wine bottle and was available as part of their New Year’s collection. It smelled really nice, but it had a lot of shimmer. I don’t really have much of a want for a shimmer body wash, so I’d pass on this. + David Beckham Homme Shower Gel, 6.7 FL OZ ($24.99). I got this as part of a cologne set that I got for Kylor (and he was the one primarily using this). I wouldn’t really be down for paying the price per bottle, but if you’re interested in paying for it, I will say it smells INCREDIBLE. I loved when he was using this, but I’m also a fan of the matching cologne. + Gillette Satin Care Ultra Sensitive Shave Gel, 7 OZ ($1.99). This was really nice. I found it to be pretty soothing. I’ll definitely use this again – it’s great for a basic shave gel that doesn’t cause irritation. + Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Bum Bum Cream, 0.84 FL OZ ($4.66). This is quickly becoming a cult classic product. I’ll admit, I think it smells delicious. I get why everyone thinks it smells so great, but (hold your pitchforks), I don’t get why everyone is so obsessed with it. It’s just like a normal lotion to me, so I wouldn’t go searching for the full size.
skincare.
+ Beauty 360 Premium Cotton Rounds, 80 CT ($3.79). These were pretty good. I didn’t find them to shed too much, and I really liked the quilted side for removing my eye makeup. I would get these again. Actually I have, this is like my 24th pack of these! + Simple Cleansing Facial Wipes, 7 CT ($4.99). I’m pretty sure this price is wrong, but it’s all I can find online? These are good, but this pack dried out very quickly. I’ve gotten the full size packs and didn’t have any issues, so I’d purchase the full size but I did find it weird that I had an issue with this travel size pack. + MAC Prep + Prime FIX+ , 3.4 FL OZ ($26.00). This is definitely not my first bottle of this. I love it, it works great at so many different things. I am trying out a few cheaper alternatives of this right now, but I’ll probably switch back to this once those are empty because OG is OG! + The Body Shop Smoky Poppy Shower Gel, 8.4 FL OZ ($10.00). This scent is no longer available :(. I actually got this on clearance from TJ Maxx. I loved the scent of it, very musky, while still having a sweeter side to it. My husband really enjoyed this too. + eb5 Anti-Aging Toner, 0.75 FL OZ ($1.24). I really did like this. This is the first product from this brand that I’ve used, and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked it. I would buy the full size. + Luzern La Defense Urban Protect Daily Moisturizer, 0.33 FL OZ ($16.50). This was a really thick moisturizer. It was sooo amazing though. My skin felt so damn good after using this. I definitely see why it has such a high price tag. + Clinique Clarifying Lotion 3, 1 FL OZ ($2.38). This has always been one of my go-to skincare products. I have full size bottles of this, and I’ll always repurchase. This is definitely a cult classic for a reason! + Clinique Liquid Facial Soap Mild, 1 FL OZ ($2.76). This is another cult classic. So great for sensitive skin. This makes my skin feel so clean and refreshed. It’s great for those really long, stressful days. + Purlisse Blue Lotus 4-in-1 Eye Adore Serum, 0.24 FL OZ ($27.84). This seriously made my undereyes feel and look so amazing. I am really surprised at the estimated value cost of this tiny size, but I might be willing to pay retail for the full size because it really did make my eyes feel incredible! + Caudalie Make-Up Removing Cleansing Oil, 1 FL OZ ($8.28). I love cleansing oils and balms. They always work so well to remove my makeup, and this is no exception. This was interesting since it is an oil and I’ve always hated cleansing oils before trying this one. This totally changed my mind though. Bring on the cleansing oils!
masks.
+ Grace & Stella Anti-Wrinkle and Energizing Eye Mask ($2.00). + Esfolio Pearl Essence Mask Sheet ($2.20). + It’s Skin Blueberry Vitality & Moisture Sheet Mask ($1.99). + Annie’s Way Ginkgo + Seaweed Anti-Wrinkle Eye Mask ($2.99). + Mizon Enjoy Vital-Up Time Anti Wrinkle Mask ($3.50). + Urban Dollkiss Elephant Nose Pack ($5.99). + Etude House Collagen Eye Patch ($1.96). + no:hj Modeling Mask Serum ($4.00). + Etude House Black Charcoal Chin Pack ($2.90). + Her Story Aqua Mask Sheet ($4.00). + Dr. Brandt Shake & Shot Shaking Rubber Hydro Shot ($12.00) + Mario Badescu Enzyme Revitalizing Mask, 0.5 OZ ($5.00) + GlamGlow InstaMud 60-Second Pore-Refining Treatment, 0.24 OZ ($5.92)
makeup.
+ Urban Decay Troublemaker Mascara, 0.10 OZ ($11.00). I only got to use this a couple of times before it dried out. I did really like the mascara, but the fact that the travel size dried out so quickly really concerns me about the full size + Manna Kadar Flutter Mascara Jet Black ($29.00). This was an okay mascara. I don’t think that I would pay $30 for it, but it was pretty decent. This did dry out pretty quick too, though. Shame. + Urban Decay 24/7 Glide On Eye Pencil in Perversion ($21.00). This line is my holy grail eye liners. This eye liner ended up falling out of the pencil. Ugh. I’ll still repurchase though. A must-have!
I used up $370.72 worth of products this month! I’ve used up $2,996.04 worth of products so far this year!
What did you use up this month? What do you think of this layout for future empties posts?

If you had told 13-year-old me that someday, in the faraway future, hundreds of people would generously teach me how to take care of my curly hair on an app called Instagram, I would have cried. Okay, I would have asked what an app is and then I would have cried.
I have only very recently (like, in the last year) started loving my hair in all its maximalist, effusive glory. I used to straighten it every week all the way through high school and college. Now, though, I’ve come to realize that much like bright colors and clashing patterns, frizz and curls better reflect how I feel on the inside than stick-straight strands do. My hair is as much an expression of my personal style as my rainbow sweater collection.
That doesn’t mean it’s easy, however. Sometimes it looks like this (please see left). I often think about what Shiona Turini said when she shared her hair routine on Man Repeller after switching from straightening it for years to finally wearing it natural: “I’m […] learning that no two hair days are the same. It has a mind of its own and it depends on so many variables. I can only embrace it.”
She hit the nail on the head. Curly hair is higher-maintenance than a teacup poodle. As much as I’ve come to enjoy mine, I do not enjoy the mental space it takes up in my effort to make it look its best — the product application, the air-drying, the spritzing, the oiling — and even then it often turns on me out of the blue, sticking out at a weird angle after a restless night’s sleep or becoming broom-like after too much contact with my beloved chartreuse mohair peacoat.
Exasperated after a recent bout of curly hair betrayals, I turned to my favorite therapist-cum-search-engine (Instagram!) for advice. I asked for three things: 1.) general curly hair tips, 2.) how to preserve my curls so they maintain their luster for multiple days after washing, and 3.) where to get a good curly haircut in New York.
Messages poured in from people with every curl type under the sun, some offering advice and others asking for me to share said advice. I was originally going to post the responses on my Instagram Stories, but I received so many requests I figured there was a real thirst for it — enough to merit a permanent post on the interwebs that could be easily referenced in a post-mohair pinch. Below, find the answers to my three queries as culled from Instagram, plus the routine I’ve adopted since, and please oh puhleeze deposit any additional curly hair secrets in the comments below if you have them.
General product recommendations:
“Camille Rose. All its products are great! But the Algae Renew Deep Conditioner is my holy grail. I have super duper curly hair and it helps my curls stay lush.”
“Shea Moisture!!!!! Truly revolutionary!!!! It isn’t high-end and it’s very affordable. But the same brand has a higher-end line called Madam C.J. Walker. Absolutely life-changing. Use the shampoos and the hair cream for after the shower to keep the integrity of your curls.”
“Shu Uemura Wonder Worker — best product I’ve used for a frizz-free air dry.”
“Philip Kingsley Elasticizer Pre Shampoo Treatment!! It is a pre-wash treatment but I leave it in overnight. It is the only thing that saves my curls from all the heat damage I do to it!”
“I use Curl Keeper. It’s a Canadian product line, so I’m not sure if you can order it to the states but nothing tames my curls quite like it!”
“I just started using L’Oreal EverCurl Sculpt and Hold Cream. It’s NOT CRUNCHY and makes my hair shiny with less frizz. I also love Paul Mitchell Skinny Serum and Davines Curl Building Serum.”
“Evo Liquid Rollers Curl Balm is a game-changing product!! My hair is just like yours and it supports the curls but is not crunchy one bit! So soft!”
“Lush’s Dirty Hair Styling Cream is really good for light definition and it smells like someone who believes in crystal magic in the best possible way.”
“AG Hair Recoil Curl Activator is gooooood! Recommended to me by another curly-haired babe and I was skeptical but now can’t live without it.”
“Davines Oi All In One Milk! Also Davines has a whole line ‘Love Curl‘ with an amazing curl refresher. Cruelty-free and paraben-free!”
“I use the Whipped Cream by Sebastian! It’s super lightweight so doesn’t make your hair greasy, but it’s enough to hold your curls in place for a week.”
“R&B Hair Moisturizer from Lush!!! I used to bleach my hair and it was the only thing that’s kept it alive and soft, especially in the winter.”
“The best conditioner I’ve ever used and have used for the last eight years (!!!) is the Moisture Repair Conditioner by Moroccan Oil — you don’t need much, just comb that sucker through with a wide-tooth comb in the shower and rinse with cold water. [You’ll have] the silkiest hair [right] out of the shower.”
“I really like Miss Jessie’s Pillow Soft Curls Styling Lotion! It’s good for definition that’s not crunchy and it smells like fresh laundry. A woman stopped me in a bar last weekend to tell me how wonderful my hair smells!”
“A product called Cantu has rocked my world. It’s only 7 bucks but don’t let that fool ya. My curls are feelin’ themselves.”

Curl preservation tips:
“I started leaving coconut oil in my hair for a full day before my shampoo day, and it feels aaaaaamazing. Highly recommend.”
“I really like Living Proof No Frizz Leave-In conditioner. It really helps tame the post-shower frizz for close to a week.”
“Put lots of salt (sea salt or kosher) in a big bowl with warm water, whisk it together and after a shower dunk it over your head.”
“Moisturize in the morning and evening! Spritz with a bit of water, let that sink in and then smooth over with a tiny bit of your favorite moisturizing styler.”
“I change up my products so I don’t use the same thing all the time or my hair starts to get used to it and starts to frizz.”
“Use a glass spray bottle to spray day 2 or 3 (or 4 or 5) after washing, and just get your whole head damp and add a little of whatever your after-shower product is, it kind of brings curls back to life a little.”
“For third-day hair, I’ve used Klorane Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk and then I’ll spritz my curls with water and then spray in a little more Briogeo Leave-In Conditioning Spray.”
“I like to use a spray bottle with a little argan oil in it to spray over those curls that need help day 2 or 3 after washing.”
“Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk Refresher Spray.”
“Bumble and bumble’s Bb. Curl (Style) Pre-Style/Re-Style Primer is CLUTCH for extending curls! You apply it before your other styling products and then just spray it on again to re-define and re-moisturize after a few days. If I need even more moisture I’ll spray Infusium 23 Moisture Replenisher (which is dirt cheap yay) and then the Bumble and bumble.”

Where to get a good curly haircut in NYC:
“Fox & Jane on Grand St. — Kiki is a lifesaver.”
“Jennifer Luna at Fox & Jane is a curly-haired, curly hair genius and super bubbly and sweet.”
“Go to Angela at Whistle Salon!
“Chokmah Hair Lab”
“Bull in The Heather Salon”
“Stacy at Butterfly Studio on 23rd street. She’s amazing. A little pricey but worth it.”
“Coby at Little Axe in Williamsburg will change your life.”
“Brush on 19th St”
“Dante Pronio!!! The only haircut I haven’t cried after in my life. I have followed him to four different salons. He is at Sally Hershberger now. When my hair was short he cut it to visually compensate for my right shoulder which is a little higher than my left shoulder. He also does this cute dance when flicking cut pieces of hair to the group. I think he is totally unaware of it, which makes it even better.”
“Antonio at John Barrett is great with curls. He’s been my hair stylist for 16 years from Cleveland to NYC. He’s a hair genius and the nicest person IRL.”
“Chris Chase in Chelsea”
“Cindy at Linden Salon is a genius with curly hair — removing weight without length. She’s in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. Worth a trip.”
“SELF Salon in Williamsburg. Go to one of their DevaChan-certified stylists.”
“Shuki Zikri”
“Girl, it’s Head Chop in Williamsburg. $100 for a cut and curl set. Ask for Martha Ellen — she’s a curl wizard AND she has a cute dog.”
“Molly at Sara June — she’s a curly-haired stylist.”
My new hair routine:
1. Wash in the shower once a week with DevaCurl Low Poo Shampoo
2. Condition with DevaCurl One Conditioner OR the Tony Moly Mayo Hair Mask and comb through with fingers
3. Scrunch in IGK Mistress Hydrating Hair Balm while it’s still pretty wet
4. Tie up using the “plopping” method for about ~20 minutes (an Instagram recommendation — TYSM!)
5. Air dry
6. Spritz with water throughout the week and reapply IGK Mistress Hydrating Hair Balm as-needed (also an Instagram recommendation, and probably the most impactful change in my routine in that I’m able to maintain the integrity of my curls for longer between washes)
Overall I couldn’t be more thrilled with the results of my Help Harling’s Curls social media campaign, the only downside being that I now have so many products and hair salons I want to try it will probably take me until age 175 to fully vet them all. That’s okay, though. If there’s one thing curly hair has taught me, it’s patience.

Damaged Hair Fixes with a Cult Following

Tumblr media
