Blur and Creative Photography – Why Your Photos Shouldn’t Be 100% Sharp?
Tumblr media
I’ve an image of a blueberry shot at the finish of a spoon with my big scale focal factor. It has an exceptionally constrained profundity of area (DOF). Just, the front of the blueberry is in middle hobby. The relaxation has a first-rate sensitive haze.
The essential observation after I published it on fb become 'it might look better on the off risk that it has been all in canter interest.'
No.
There may be a discernment amongst a few photograph takers who are extraordinarily positioned resources into the information of taking pictures, that absolutely each photo needs to be a 100% sharp. While it is an altogether legitimate decision – and I absolutely bolster the selection to shoot their pics that manner – it is not the 'foremost' decision.
For the ones of us who need to investigate distinct inventive styles, mess around with various focal factors and push the boundaries of what pictures can enable us to do in making craftsmanship, there are a variety of options.
We offer wedding photography in Pakistan at the lowest rates.
Note: to resolve, at times a photograph 'only is' out of canter for motives unknown. This text has a tendency to the picture takers conscious resourceful selection to use delicate fine or obscure in a photograph. It might be an unpretentious distinction for some, yet it's far a difference.
Beyond Bokeh
It interests me that numerous picture takers accept as true with all pix 'ought to be tack sharp.' Still, they may be obtainable taking pix of winged creatures, representations or wedding photographs with sensitive obscured bokeh foundations. Notwithstanding, the motives they do as such are impeccably valid.
Some Lensmen Do as Such to:
·         Mellow a diverting basis
·         Bring the difficulty into significant quality
·         Make it tastefully pleasing
·         Supply profundity and three-D sense to the picture
Be that as it may, for bokeh to characteristic admirably, you need some explicit additives present and going on. For example, adequate pleasant focal points, a notable deal of separation in the back of the problem to the foundation, and high-quality sensitive light. Few out of each ordinary shoot gives the ones occasions, nor might everybody be able to manipulate the value of the exceptional focal point.
Remember the possibility that we want lots extra delicate first-rate in our image, such as the issue. Possibly, we want the muse sharp, and the subject obscured – a approach regularly utilized in a few street photography styles.
Should not something be said approximately ICM – intentional camera movement? or However Wabi-Sabi, the Japanese/Zen tasteful of the excellence of illness.
Get our engagement photography packages Karachi.
There is such a full-size quantity of different techniques to peer the world and present our photographs with our unique inventive attitude. In the occasion that that suggests spreading stuff on a channel earlier than your focal point, at that point smear-away :).
Figure out the Way to Love the Blur
Carry your hand as near your face as you could, so you can at present highlight on it. The cease result for the foundation? In the event which you pass middle to the muse alternatively, your hand obscures.
A long way off mountains are obscured as we physically cannot listen plainly that remote.
So, it’s not unusual for haze to be available in our photos. Along these traces on the off threat that we use it all the extra inventively to give our pics a change vibe or inclination, we're upgrading a characteristic issue in our fact.
Painters can communicate to a tree in various routes relying upon their strategy and fashion. It is probably rendered perfectly with each leaf painted as an individual aspect. It would have distinct traces speak me to a trunk and branches, or splendid masses out of sight.
Images can be perky, resourceful, complex and masterful too. We will allow ourselves to cherish difficult to understand.
We provide female event photographers in Lahore.
Planned camera improvement is famous with stands of trees, delicate coastline scenes, and fields of blooms. To improve it, a whole lot step by step, a few humans expand plastic movie earlier than the focus. Or alternatively fold it over the front leaving a bit opening to shoot via.
We recognise blossom/huge scale picture takers who fold bandage texture over the front in their focal factor for an option delicate impact and to encompass a few shadings too. Extending pantyhose over the front of the focal point is also shabby and feasible.
Spreading oil jam on a channel screwed to the front of the point of interest is sensibly regular for an effective sensitive haze effect.
Lens Choices
Lens with a f forestall of 2.8 to at least 1.4 give a really tight profundity of discipline, which functions the concern and mollifies the foundation. Complete scale focal points are first-rate for this effect.
Numerous picture and wedding photographic artists will have an 85mm representation focal point with a f-prevent in this range. Often explicitly used to obscure the muse for a pleasant impact.
We offer lighting photography Sahiwal.
Lens baby are awesome for his or her embellishment focal factors. Their focal factors provide bunches of innovative haze influences. The 'writer' run permits you to pick an express point inside the photo to be in middle whilst softening the rest of. the 'turn' extend offers a swirly bokeh effect out of sight, and there are unique alternatives as nicely.
'Helios' and 'Vivitar' antique focal factors are encountering a renaissance in prominence. They have got numerous progressive bokeh affects (counting the whirl style) and are very shabby in contrast with lens baby. Nonetheless, they may be vintage guide-middle focal factors and may require an authority mount to enrol in for your slicing area digicam, but might they be capable of can be received at actually affordable expenses.
Have Fun
For some human beings, it has a tendency to be startling to relinquish the requirement for sharpness and hold close the gentler facet. Other people take a seat cheerfully in that put and rarely shoot a traditionally sharp shot.
there’re room inner images as an innovative mechanism for us to be ingenious. To relinquish the obvious guidelines, unwind and have an exceptional time conducting something other than what's anticipated.
Gige Studio offers jewellery photography Islamabad.
Certainly, a few impacts are strong point, and you won't have any choice to use them continuously. Anyhow, you would not use a fish-eye focal factor each day either.
Having a scope of selections gives you appreciably more diploma to shoot in a surprising manner, consist of your certainly one of a kind take an image. Using unique focal points can enable us to see the sector in new energizing ways and open up chances to make paramount pictures.
Methods to Play 1. Bokeh
Bokeh identifies with the pleasant and smoothness of your obscured basis while you shoot the difficulty with a shallow profundity of field. Various focal factors give a shifted type of bokeh. Often, the higher best brief primes or complete scale focal factors have the smoothest, maximum gratifying bokeh.
Bokeh takes place whilst the issue is closer to the digicam than it's far to the inspiration. Capturing wide open, i.e., f2. eight to f1.2 will give greatest haze of the inspiration.
Get the best photography services.
So, attempt to shoot your subjects extensive open with a decent profundity of discipline. With the foundation in addition far from them, you'll accomplish the pleasant sensitive haze.
2. Specific Recognition
Whilst you join a limited profundity of field, for example, f2.8, with deciding on a specific piece of the challenge, it's going to mollify the whole thing else inside the photo.
Doing as such makes a lovely effect with blossoms and large-scale symbolism.
Don’t let slide our party photography in Peshawar.
3. Shoot Via
Area something before the focal point to include a few dimensions of non-abrasiveness. It can both totally cover the focal point or be folded over it to just mellow the rims.
·         You can make use of:
·         Nylons prolonged over the focal point
·         Gauzy texture folded over the focus
·         Plastic movie crosswise over or folded over the point of interest
·         Channels spread with oil jam
·         Hold texture or blooms earlier than a part of the focus to consist of non-abrasiveness (normal in blossom images)
4. ICM (Intentional Camera Movement)
Purposeful digital camera movement is the point at which the digicam is deliberately moved amid the display commencing and shutting to feature difficult to understand to the image. An independent thickness channel can assist with supplying you with a touch longer display velocity if taking pictures in sunshine.
You may have seen this applied in shots of backwoods with vertical stands of tree trunks.
5. Vintage Lenses
Take a stab at buying 'Helios' or 'Vivitar' lenses (or distinctive options) and related mounts to your digital camera. A massive quantity of those focal points has unexpected greater visualizations (now and then located as a blame) however may be utilized appropriately for revolutionary photographs.

6. Capacity Lenses

7. Filters

Conclusion
For the folks that endeavour to have every photograph as sharp as might be predicted beneath the situations, continue with your endeavours. At the off chance that you who want extra variety, adaptability, and imagination to your work, there may be space to play and make that fashion of a picture as properly.

Artisan
Project: Artisan #artisan
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Overview.
“If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a video is worth a million.”
Modern SLR cameras shoot very high quality video. In today’s world Photographers are often expected to be able to shoot both stills and moving images.
This project will help you develop many key photographic skills.
Create.
Make a blog entry (tumblr) identifying a minimum of 5 short movie clips that are visually interesting, diverse and employ a variety of camera techniques to help you develop a creative approach and methodology for your own work.
At least one of the clips should have an ‘Artisan’ subject.
Create a storyboard for your project. Include as much detail as possible. Regarding not only your choice of subject but also your planned use of camera techniques and movements, lenses and viewpoint, lighting techniques, use of props and locations etc.
Your Storyboard has to be approved by your tutor before you start shooting and is fundamental to a successful outcome.
Produce.
1. Evidence of research and project development.
2. A detailed storyboard document uploaded to MYCITY
3. Shoot using a minimum of 3 camera angles and a variety of movement capture techniques.
4. Effectively Edit footage using Adobe Premiere Pro.
5. Upload One 90sec H.264, Vimeo 1080p, ‘stand-alone’ video mp4 file to Moodle submission area.
6. Evaluate your project on the #Artisan blog page
Artisan Research
“Artisan Blacksmith” Short Film
https://vimeo.com/88949700
I love the opening shot of this video – It starts in complete blackness and the door of the workshop is opened to the left of the frame, revealing the blacksmith (in the style of a “wipe” transition), while the camera gently tracks to the right of the frame. The shot at 00’45” is also really effective as we are introduced to the artisan with a very tight shot on his face, showing him intently looking into the camera.
Otium - The Artisan Story
https://vimeo.com/171843366
The 20 seconds from 00’10” onwards works really well at setting the tone for the video and shows really dynamic shots of close ups of the different artisans who will feature in the video. There is only slight movement in the camera as there is so much happening visually in the shots.
Handcrafted Artisan Pizza
https://vimeo.com/84880882
From the outset, this video is extremely visually engaging, using slow motion techniques to capture water movement and flour being thrown in preparation of making the pizza base. The soundtrack also works particularly well with the visuals on screen and set an upbeat mood for the video. The tracking shot over the ingredients works extremely well and takes the viewer on a journey setting the stage for the preparation of the pizza.
Searching for the Perfect Loaf — Babettes Artisan Breads
https://vimeo.com/135403569
As with the previous video, this one starts out with very close up tracking shots of the food that will appear in the video. There are lots of cuts and movement in the shots that keep the viewer interested. This is followed by a really nicely composed exterior shot, establishing where the rest of the video will take place. This video employs both slow motion techniques, to give sense of grace to the processes of preparation and speeded up sections to show the latter, more automated stages of production. Most of the video is shot with a really shallow depth of field which has the effect of bringing the subject into clear and central focus and creating interesting, out of focus backgrounds for the shots.
Artisan Made
https://vimeo.com/296028303
This one minute video is incredibly colourful and utilises a variety of close-up shots with a very shallow depth of file while the camera is constantly tracking, retaining the viewers interest. The story is very well told from the outset, establishing shots showing the location the video will be in through to the close-up shots showing the really delicate work that goes into making the bracelets.
Snowdrift - Artisan Hard Ciders
https://vimeo.com/33258259
As with the previous examples, this video employs a lot of extreme close-ups with a very shallow depth of field. There is a very effective scene at 00’20” where the shadow of the worker is shown on a white wall performing the task and is much more visually interesting than just seeing him in person, quickly followed by his reflection in the bottle, having the same effect. The video also employs several focus pulls which are very effective at taking the viewer’s eye in to the subject the film maker wants to concentrate you on. The next section uses some very effective tracking shots to pull away and up from the subjects and give a wider viewpoint of the subject and help put it in context and situ.
The video
Initially, I had planned on using my friends wife who has a jewellery making business as the subject for the video, however, when I approached her, she wasn’t keen to be filmed. I have decided to use Linsey as the subject as she writes and records music in our home studio. I think the kit would work well visually and will now start writing the scoreboard for the shoot (along with a piece of bespoke music for the project). In order to produce enough footage, I think I will need a minimum of 40 shots to give me enough useable material for creating a 90 sec video. I found the use of sliders really effective at keeping movement in the shots and the viewer’s attention, so managed to find a basic one with really good reviews on Amazon for £19, so have ordered this.
Adobe Premier Pro Notes
IMPORT
How do you import files into Premier Pro?
To import files you can either select them via the media browser or use “File”, “Import” to locate the files you wish to import.
EDIT
To review each imported clip before adding it to the timeline you hover your mouse over the clip to play by moving right or rewind by moving left or double click the clip and it will open in the window above and you can preview using full transport controls.
Then, once you have established which clips you want to use, you drag the clip over to the timeline in the preview window on the bottom left of the screen (assuming standard layout settings haven’t been modified) to add the clip to the timeline.
If you need to shorten or lengthen a section of the clip, you can do this by left clicking and holding your mouse at the end or beginning of the sequence and contacting or expanding the clip.
OPTIMISE
To adapt light levels, colour balance and other general optimisations, you can do this in the colour panel.
To create a transition between two clips you can do this in the effects panel.
To add a title to the beginning or the end of your video, you would do this in the graphics panel. In this section there are multiple pre-set titles.
EXPORT
The settings for the Artisan Video are:
Codec: H.264
Preset: Vimeo 1080p
File type: *.mp4
To export a finished video in Premier Pro you go to “File” > “Export” > “Media” and use the Export Settings dialogue box to set parameters for your file.
To package a file that you are working on, including links, sequences, files etc. you go to “File” > “Project Manager” and use the Project Manager dialogue box to save your files.
Uses for DSLR video
There are a variety of reasons for using a DSLR to capture video which include:
Sensor
The sensor in a DSLR is naturally much larger than the small light sensors in more traditional video cameras. The sensor processes the images into digital information, and so the bigger the sensor, the more information can be processed, resulting in sharp and detailed images.
A large sensor also means much better control of depth of field. A Canon 5D is capable of shooting the foreground crisply in focus and the background entirely soft and blurred, creating a cinematic and polished shot.
The other important benefit of a large sensor is the capability in low light. This means you can shoot natural shots at night or in poor lighting conditions to create a natural feel and to remove the need for artificial lighting in some cases.
Portability
DSLRs do get heavy with a big lens and battery pack, but on the whole they are much smaller and lighter than equivalent video cameras. Additionally, they can be broken down into smaller components and this means their portability both in transit, and whilst filming is much more flexible than a standard broadcast rig.
Interchangeable lenses
As the still camera market is well established there are a lot of different lenses available, which means we can select from a wide range to pick the right one for the job. As there are many manufacturers offering different price points the lenses can be quite affordable, meaning filmmaking on a DSLR is much more accessible than ever before.
Less intimidating appearance
As the shape and size of a DSLR is associated with photography for most people, a lot of the time no-one actually realises you’re filming. This is beneficial for shooting natural shots of people in a public space and helpful for blending into the background to get the shot you want.
Even filming interviews or a piece to camera is a lot easier with a DSLR, especially with those who are camera shy or inexperienced. People are less intimated by the unassuming appearance, and generally relax and deliver a more natural performance.
Filming techniques
Camera Angles
Eye level – camera points straight ahead. Intention is to be objective.
Low angle – camera points up from a lower angle. It makes the subject dominating.
High angle – camera points down from a higher angle. It makes the subject diminutive. A variation: Top angle or bird’s eye view – special case when you want to show the topography of a location. Aerial shots fall under this.
Dutch – tilted angle. It draws attention to the fact it’s not a balanced frame. Something is literally off kilter.
Over the shoulder (OTS) – not strictly an angle, but it’s a specialized shot that deserves its own place. Confrontational by nature.
Shot Sizes
Close up – facial features and expression is more important than anything else. Variation: Extreme close up – you probably want to chop something off for an even closer look.
Long shot – When you want to add action and location along with the subject. Variation: Extreme long shot – when the location is more important than the character at that moment.
Medium shot or Mid shot – half of a person, roughly, where body language is important while eliminating distracting elements of the background.
Single, two shot, three shot. etc. – Number of people in frame decide this. You can combine this with a CU, MS or LS.
POV – as if the audience were the subject.
Camera Movement
360 degree – showcase the subject by moving around it.
Zoom – when you want to get closer or further away without making an emotional statement.
Pan and tilt – when you want to observe the space from a single vantage point, follow the subject so you feel like you’re a spectator observing. The movement happens on a pivot.
Tracking shot, crane, dolly – when you want to follow the subject and be more involved with the space and location. The audience is drawn into the world.
Random – camera shake or motion to provide energy.
Compound Motion
You can combine motion into more complex shots. The two most popular examples are:
Dolly Zoom or Vertigo Shot – where the camera dollies in/our and zooms in/out (the opposite direction to the dolly movement) at the same time.
Single take shot – where the action is a complex choreography of different camera angles, shot sizes and motion. The toughest and most time consuming to pull off.

Storyboard
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is my final storyboard that was approved by my lecturer prior to shooting.
The shoot
I set everything up in the studio, as per my plan, using a soft box to provide constant light, however, this made the lighting too harsh and wasn’t conducive to the mood I was trying to create, so I filmed all the shots using the available lighting in the studio which I feel gave the shots a warmer and more atmospheric feel which I was trying to achieve. I managed to get the majority of the shots I had planned for in my storyboard with the exception of the shots I had planned for the train window as I had enough footage in the studio to use that would be more relevant and hopefully cut together well in the edit.
The edit
I decided to cut together a rough draft of the edit using iMovie, to gauge how well the shots would work together and experiment with some of the transitions.
I don’t have Premier Pro on my Mac at home so downloaded a 7 day trial to allow me to start the edit. Some of the transitions (focus morphing between clips) I had used for my draft edit weren’t available in Premier Pro, so I used a film dissolve between the cuts, which I think was more effective and gave more of a feeling of movement in the final edit. Below are some stills from the transitions I feel worked well.

Conclusion and reflection
I enjoyed this project, although there was a very steep learning curve with using the software, I am reasonably happy with the final video. My first edits were much closer to the 2 minute mark, so began to drag a little and become quite repetitive, so I cut down some of the less visually interesting scenes and feel it flows much better with the final edit at 1 min 31 sec. I think investing in my budget slider was a really good investment, as it added movement to all the shots I used it for, which keeps the viewer more engaged and looks more professional in my opinion. I colour graded the sequences but wasn’t happy with the results, as the footage became too grainy with noise when I lightened it up and lost the atmosphere and mood I liked with the initial clips. I really appreciate the value of the storyboard, as it is a great starting point for your shoot and let’s you pre-visualise how the edit will look which really helps you shoot the footage which should work best.

Things to see and do in Kenya

Things to see and do in Kenya
Climb Mount Kenya At 4,986m (16,358ft) above sea level, this extinct volcano is the second-highest mountain in Africa. The Mountain Club of Kenya runs mountain huts and publishes guides for climbers. Even if you don't climb to the upper slopes, it is worth spending time on the forested lower slopes below the ice-capped peak, where interesting wildlife abounds. Climb Mount Longonot This distinctive volcano, which last erupted in the 1860s, rises dramatically above the Rift Valley floor, and its slopes can be ascended in around 90 minutes. Allow another hour for the descent, and 3-4 hours if you want to walk around the rim of the perfect volcanic crater. Day trip to Nairobi National Park Nairobi National Park, only 8km (5 miles) from the city centre, is Kenya's oldest national park. Today, it still looks much as it did in the early photographs – wild, undulating pasture – and supports most of East Africa’s best known wildlife, including lion, rhino, giraffe, buffalo and zebra (but not elephant). Experience the magic of the Masai Mara Kenya's most popular game park is named after the Maasai tribe, who migrated south from the Nile Valley in the 17th century. A northern extension to Tanzania’s Serengeti Plains, it is one of the best places in Africa for seeing lion, cheetah and leopard, but is most famous for the annual wildebeest migration and dramatic crossing of the crocodile-infested Mara River. Explore Kenya’s coral coast Visitors can choose between scuba-diving, snorkelling, sailing, water-skiing, swimming or surfing along Kenya's coral coast. The most popular resorts near Mombasa include Bamburi, Kikambala, Kilifi, Malindi, Nyali and the 10km- (6-mile) long, dazzlingly white Diani Beach. Another good base for watersports is the Rift Valley lake of Naivasha, about 1.5 hours drive from Nairobi. Explore Lamu Town Set on a picturesque offshore island close to the Somali border, Lamu is a charming old Swahili city and UNESCO World Heritage Site with many historic mosques and fine old Arab houses replete with impressive carved wooden doors. Highlights of the town include the Lamu Museum, the Swahili House Museum and the Fortress. Go twitching in Kakamega Forest The only rainforest in Kenya, this lovely spot near the Ugandan border is arguably the prime birdwatching site in the country, thanks to the presence of several dozen forest species found nowhere else in the country. For non-birders, the shady forest paths and plentiful monkeys still offer lots of charm. Go wild at Lake Nakuru National Park Boasting a dramatic setting in the Rift Valley, this park is dominated by a lake whose edges are frequently home to hundreds of thousands of pink flamingos. It is also one of Kenya's best rhino sanctuaries, supporting high concentrations of both black and white rhino, and you may spot a leopard in the giant yellowwood acacia trees. Help save the elephants at Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage Watch baby elephants play at the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, an important sanctuary where orphaned elephants are hand-reared before being released back into the wild. Bordering Nairobi National Park, the sanctuary is also home to several orphaned rhinos, and is an important player in the fight against poaching. Jump aboard a dhow Spend an evening afloat on a romantic dhow (traditional Arab sailing boat), feasting on delicious seafood and watching the moon rise over Mombasa's old harbour. Lunchtime or dinner cruises are available on these beautiful floating restaurants, and some even have space for dancing on the deck. Marvel at Mombasa Enjoy this coastal city's Swahili flavour in the Old Town, with its narrow, crowded streets; watch the sailing dhows in the Old Harbour and catch the sound and light show at Fort Jesus, which was built by the Portuguese in the 17th century and is now a museum. Pay a visit to Laikipia Plateau Discover a recent conservation success where former farmland has been opened up as game sanctuaries and stocked with big game including the Big Five: elephant, buffalo, lion, rhino and leopard. The old farmsteads here have been converted into delightful, luxurious accommodations. This vast wilderness area remains largely underexplored by tourists. Quaff high tea at Elsamere Situated on the shores of Lake Naivasha, the former home of Joy Adamson (of Born Free fame) is now a museum and conservation research centre. Set in grounds teeming with birds – and home to a group of handsome colobus monkeys – Elsamere also serves excellent high tea. Shop until you drop in Mombasa Biashara Street is a great place to buy traditional kikoy and khanga clothing. Makupa Market, off Mwembe Tayari, is the main city market. Serious souvenir shoppers should also head for the Bombolulu Workshops and Cultural Village, where disabled men and women produce high-quality leatherwork, jewellery and other crafts. Stay a night at Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary Situated a short distance from the main highway between Nairobi and Mombasa, this small private sanctuary bordering the vast Tsavo National Park doubles as a luxury hotel and well-positioned hide, overlooking a salt lick and a waterhole that frequently attracts aggregations of a hundred or more elephants. Step into the land of giants at Amboseli National Park The 392sq km (151sq mile) Amboseli National Park lies at the base of snow-capped Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak. Wildlife includes lion, cheetah, wildebeest, hippo and gazelle, but the park is most famous for the large herds of elephant attracted by the perennial swamps. Bird-watching is popular, and visitors can learn about the local Maasai people through homestead visits. Take the road less travelled to Lake Turkana In the barren northern reaches of Kenya, Lake Turkana is a strange and beautiful oasis, known to locals as the Jade Sea due to its size and striking colour. The lake provides great fishing, while its islands have healthy crocodile and hippo populations. The semi-nomadic Turkana tribe are just as interesting as the lake itself. Take to the skies in a hot air balloon Float over great herds of game in the Masai Mara National Reserve. Hour-long excursions set off at dawn and end with champagne breakfasts. Almost all the lodges in the reserve offer this experience, which gives ballooners the chance to see the wildebeest migration from the air between July and September. Tour Nairobi's museums Browse the ethnographic and archaeological exhibits of the National Museum, which lies within walking distance of the city centre. And then head out to the suburban Karen Blixen Museum, which occupies the farmhouse made famous by the nominal author's book, Out of Africa. The Nairobi Railway Museum also covers an important chapter of the city’s history. Shop online with these businesses located in drought-affected areas
The super power of the Styling You community is our ability to get behind and support other women in need. Over the last couple of weeks we’ve done that through fundraising for Dress for Success Brisbane (our $10,000 raised will help 30 unemployed people get a leg up into a job – how GREAT is that?) and this week we’ve been supporting our rural sisters, women living in drought-affected areas of Australia but making a go of it in very tough times through their online businesses.
I caught The Today Show on Monday morning in among the chaos that is the start of the week. The team was in Dirranbandi, 600km west of Brisbane, and I saw Sylvia interviewing Karena, the owner of The Linen Cupboard, who had moved to the area more than seven years ago to live on her partner’s family sheep station. Two years in, she opened The Linen Cupboard to bring convenience to the people of the town, who would otherwise have to drive two hours to buy a gift or a new set of sheets.
What I learned from that interview was that businesses in these drought-affected towns need us to spend our city dollars with them. Relying on the dollars just in their communities, which have been hit hard by the drought, will not keep their businesses afloat. The danger in businesses like Karena’s closing is that with each closure, the sense of community is lessened. Men, women and children in drought-affected areas need that sense of community more than ever.
LIGHTBULB MOMENT … if a business is online but based in a drought-affected area, then city people shopping online could help boost the communities where those businesses are based.
So, I took to Instagram and posted an Insta Story asking for people to share online businesses operating in affected rural areas. And share they did! Most of the businesses shared are owned and operated by other women, women who genuinely were stoked to be featured and linked to. I collated them all on the DROUGHT tab of my Instagram highlights but, below, I’ve taken that list and popped them into easy categories.
I’ve already been shopping and all that I ask that you consider is that when you next have to buy a gift – it’s never too early to plan Father’s Day and Christmas shopping – check out the links to each of these businesses. Your shopping will have a positive ripple effect within those communities.
And, if you own a lifestyle/fashion/gift store, why not contact any of the makers linked to below to see if they’d be keen to supply to you.
This is not to take away from the funding that’s needed for organisations working in drought-affected areas. I wholeheartedly support donating to those organisations. My friend Beth has listed them in her very comprehensive blog post about how we can help.
I’ve received some beautiful messages from store owners this week, grateful for the mention, yes, but just happy that we’re thinking about their plight and that we care. One thing that really struck me was the positive spirit that shined through in each message. Despite the current hardship, the feeling is: “every day is one day closer to rain”, as one store owner signed off her message to me. Another shared this quote with me below.

Antoni Porowski Talks Food, Fashion and Finding Simplicity During Quarantine
Please note this interview and photo shoot with Antoni Porowski for FASHION Canada took place prior to the historic events and peaceful protests that have occurred over the past several weeks.
“I’ve cooked more in the past six weeks than I have in the past 2½ years. That’s been the silver lining to it all.” Antoni Porowski, the 36-year-old food and wine expert for the hit Netflix series Queer Eye, is describing his current (quarantine) status in relation to the pop culture juggernaut he has found himself on. Porowski spoke to us in April from an Airbnb in Austin, Tex., where he’d been holed up since the lockdown began. His much-loved show, which launched its fifth instalment of episodes in June, was just beginning to film another season in the southern metropolis before everything came to a standstill.
Photography by Ashlee Huff. Top, $1,250, shorts, price upon request, and hat, $2,600, Dior Men. Jewellery (worn throughout), Porowski’s own.
Porowski, who hails from Montreal, says he has used the isolation time to “lead a much simpler life.” And it’s undoubtedly much needed; he and his co-stars have had an intense few years, with each of the five personalities going from relative anonymity to the kind of superstardom that saw them host Elton John’s Oscars-night viewing party this year. It was a major pinch-me moment for Porowski, who recalls the “beautiful burgundy Zegna couture tux” he wore to the annual AIDS fundraiser. “I was standing there thinking, ‘Elton John is performing right now and I’m four feet away from him.’ I felt a chill go down my back. And I couldn’t sleep that night because I wanted to remember every sensation and moment of the night.”
Photography by Ashlee Huff. Suit, $995, Boss. Top, $50, Hugo.
That L.A. evening must seem like a lifetime ago now, and Porowski—who is typically based in New York City—has switched his focus to less star-studded but no less admirable networks, making the most of the local flavours (pun intended) that he’s surrounded by. “I got obsessed with this new app called Vinder,” he says about an Austin-based digital hub that connects restaurants and home cooks with local agricultural businesses. “I’ve been ordering all kinds of farm goods. In some ways, I’m living my best Martha Stewart or Ina Garten life.”
Photography by Ashlee Huff. Top and shorts, $290 each, Boss. Shoes, $350, Axel Arigato at Ssense. Belt, $395, Toga Virilis at WDLT117. Socks, $15, Hugo.
It’s not hard to conceive of Porowski following in the footsteps of such legendary lifestyle gurus. His first cookbook, which was released last year, touts the appeal of easily achievable cooking for people who are “too busy to make dinner.” That describes plenty of the guests made over in each episode of Queer Eye—“heroes” as they’re dubbed on the show—so Porowski has become an authority on getting people excited about uncomplicated food, be it chicken Milanese or mac ’n’ cheese. (Both recipes are found in Antoni in the Kitchen.) “We’re given so little information about the heroes,” he says. “I always come up with 10 different recipes to teach them. Then I meet the person and realize that some people want to be taught and they want to expand their palate. And other times, it’s really just helping someone do what they already do but more efficiently.”
Photography by Ashlee Huff. Top, $625, Dsquared2 at North42. Shorts, $130, Hugo.
Porowski inspires people from many walks of life through an approach that favours connection over pontification. “I do my best not to come in and be preachy because for anybody who’s ever tried to be preachy with me, it never really falls well,” he laughs. This gentleness in spirit translates to Porowski’s own philosophy about eating, which he says is rooted in a harmonious mix. “It’s about listening to your body,” he says about how he navigates a love of noshing with taking care of his well-being, noting that he’s just as much a fan of fried chicken as he is of raw beets. “I think balance is the key.”
Photography by Ashlee Huff. Jumpsuit, price upon request, Dior Men.
These complementary contrasts are found in Porowski’s closet, too. Favouring a “uniform of a nice pair of jeans and the perfect white T-shirt” (the kind that come from brands ranging from The Row to Sunspel), he’s had to amplify that covetable nonchalance since starting on the show. “When we got our mood boards for Queer Eye and specific visuals in terms of what they wanted us to lean into, for me it was ‘We want the James Dean look.’ I thought: ‘OK, how do I make it a little different? What am I going to do?’”
Photography by Ashlee Huff. Hat, $90, Hugo.
Pops of his personality have come from the brightly hued vintage bandanas around his neck—ones he would typically wear around his hairline while taking a run—and the quirky message shirts he’s now known for. Tees from his favourite musical acts are rooted in watching bands like Arcade Fire rise to fame in Montreal’s thriving music scene. “You can tell a lot about a person from their taste in music—kind of like food,” he says.
His selection of non-music-related tops—which includes a T-shirt that boasts the names of influential women in the art world, like Louise Bourgeois and Yayoi Kusama, and one featuring the logo from Montreal’s Expo 67, a nod to his hometown—also tells us so much about Porowski (an avid art and design fan) without him uttering a word. “I think that’s a Canadian sensibility,” he says. “I’m not an aggressive person. I like to do things sort of covertly.”
Photography by Ashlee Huff. Top, $1,620, Louis Vuitton. Jewellery, Porowski’s own.
Within his collection there are some pieces that retain a special sentiment that begs to be shared, in particular a handmade cashmere sweater from California-based nouveau-hippie brand The Elder Statesman. (Porowski has several of the label’s eclectic slogan sweaters in his wardrobe.) “People just think it’s badass,” he says of the piece—a bright-red pullover that replicates the iconic Marlboro cigarette packaging but with the word “meditate” replacing the brand name. “When I saw it, I remember thinking, ‘This is a beautiful sweater that is hand-stitched and high-grade cashmere.’ It made me reflect on the life I have now, where I’m in this incredible position where I can afford to have such a beautiful piece,” he says, adding that the sweater is also a clever juxtaposition of his previous and present pastimes. “When I was in my teens and partying like a monster, I used to smoke so many cigarettes. Now, I’m a non-smoker and I meditate every morning.”
Photography by Ashlee Huff. Top, $4,850, Pants, $1,500, and necklace, $720, Hermès. bracelet, Porowski’s own.
Though Porowski might favour comfortable casualness for his every day, that doesn’t mean he doesn’t enjoy expressing himself with clothing when the occasion suits—or, rather, in the case of the premiere of the Cats movie last winter, not in a suit at all. Instead, he hit the red carpet wearing an unconventional Thom Browne ensemble composed of a private school-style cardigan, a starched white shirt and a pleated skirt.
“I’m so obsessed with Thom Browne,” he says. The New York-based designer’s celebrated irreverence speaks to Porowski’s wilder side and lets him tap into the captivating quality that great clothing can have. “I consider myself fairly conservative, but I have busted into more colour and had some daring looks,” he says. “Clothing can be so empowering.”

5 Top Tips to Create a Stronger Jewellery Brand
By Sarah Jordan, founder and director, The William Agency
For emerging brands and aspirational designer-makers, developing a strong brand identity is an essential step to making a fantastic first impression. Retailers, buyers and the press need to be able to identify what you’re all about in one glance – instead of thinking about what makes you unique, consider how you are communicating your brand identity uniquely. This subtle difference is one of the best keys to success.
Related Blogs: Essential Advice to Improve Your Digital Customer Experience
If you are struggling to establish a strong brand identity, take a step back and consider your business from every angle. Remember, even the most sensational product can’t compete against a poor brand.
Create an overarching story
To develop a long-term, loyal customer base, the bedrock of your storytelling must remain the same. Consider a brand like Fairy Liquid – since the 1930s its storytelling has centred on longer-lasting, economical, superior cleaning. No matter how many adverts or iterations it goes through, this core principle remains the same. It may be simple, but it is effective. When creating new collections, consider how they link back to your brand story.
Related Blogs: The Art of Social Media Marketing For Jewellery Retailers
Choose a strapline and mission statement
‘Just Do It’, ‘I’m Lovin’ It’, ‘A Diamond is Forever’ – these straplines aren’t just memorable, they sum up the essence of a brand. A strapline is both engaging for consumers and an important way to say ‘on-brand’ across all your communications. Similarly, a mission statement is one or two sentences that sum up your entire identity. If you can crack this, your future copywriting and collections are more likely to stay on-brand.
Remember, your visual identity reflects your brand values
Asking your customers to look past a low quality website, poor photography and lacklustre social media channels to see beautiful jewellery beneath is a fool’s game. How can they trust your jewellery is top quality when it is poorly packaged? Your brand’s visual identity is a reflection of the value you place in your product; whether it costs £20 or £20,000. Start with an easy to navigate, vibrant, image-led website and invest in the best photography you can afford. You will benefit in the long term.

Understand your target customer
Never presume who your customer is… chances are you will be surprised! Take a closer look at who follows you on social media; discover how they are reaching your website via Google Analytics; reply to their requests on Facebook and Twitter. Over time, this will help you to develop buyer personas –fictional characters that summarise the core wants, needs and personalities of your average customers. Using this information, you can create assets, images, videos and blog posts that tap into their lifestyles. This is a fantastic way to build loyalty.
Don’t forget: If it doesn’t look good, it’s not worth doing
Different brand specialists may disagree, but at The William Agency we believe that quality counts. For example, if your brand Twitter account hasn’t been updated in six months – does this speak louder than if you didn’t have a Twitter account at all?
Related Blogs: 5 Reasons Why Your Jewellery Business Needs Content Marketing
Stick to a workload that you can handle, don’t feel the need to spread yourself thinly across a portfolio of social media accounts, and don’t rush something for the sake of it. The strongest brands are built with time and consideration.

On The Hotlist: Top September Events, Dining, Style & Travel
Hands up whoever is hoping for an Indian Summer! I for one am not ready to let go of the warm weather just yet. This month is a great time to check out new places as the crowds thin out, so we’ve come up with our picks for the best September events, dining, style and travel.
September Events
Zurich will be hosting their 7th Street Food Festival from 7-17 September, and with over 150 food sellers ranging from chocolates to ceviche, dumplings and tacos, there’s something to suit everyone.
The Leica Oskar Barnack Award (LOBA) is one of the most iconic international photography competitions. The winners have recently been chosen and members of the public will be able to view the works of the finalists and winners from 14 September to 15 October in Berlin at the Neue Schule für Fotografie.
London Fashion Week will be taking place from 15-19 September and as I’ll be at both the events above I’ll be missing most of the action including the Aspinal of London presentation which promises to be brilliant. Members of the public can buy tickets to London Fashion Week Festival which takes place from 21-24 September and is a lot of fun!
Style Picks
Continuing the fashion theme, I wanted to share a really great day out that I went on recently. The Landmark London is one of my favourite London hotels, with its stunning Winter Garden complete with palm trees. They’re capitalizing on their handy location near to Marylebone station to offer a Shop ‘Till You Drop Spa and Shopping package with Bicester Village. The designer outlet in Oxfordshire can be reached directly from Marylebone station in less than an hour. The package includes breakfast in the beautiful Winter Garden, direct return train tickets, a 10% discount VIP card for Bicester Village, exclusive complimentary hands-free shopping, access to the VIP lounge, and once back in London a cocktail, glass of champagne or soft drink at the Landmark followed by a candlelight massage and access to the spa and gym. It would make a great gift for a loved one at only £175 per person, though I wouldn’t blame you if you self-gift! Bicester Village is expanding to include even more luxury stores and has been beautifully decorated by acclaimed florist Nikki Tibbles. There are quotes by Shakespeare dotted around, as well as Liberty print phone boxes for that all important selfie and a very tasty lunch spot, Farmshop, which is part of the Soho House group.
In the hope of a never ending Summer, we created a late Summer beach trip packing list and gave our tips on how to beautify your home with tropical decor. However, if your skin is feeling the Summer heat, then we’ve got two suggestions for you. Firstly, Lumaesthetic is a London clinic specializing in the natural-looking enhancement of your features. They’re plastic surgery doctors who also work in the NHS and I recently tried their non-surgical facial with Dr Dominic Yue. I was very impressed by the results – my skin was smoother and more hydrated afterwards. I was able to forgo foundation for the photo below, taken the next day. The effects get better after a day or two when the skin has had a chance to settle down and it feels like your face is illuminated from within. Lumaesthetic can also prescribe you clinically proven skincare that’s really affordable, so I’m looking forward to seeing the long-term effects from that. As a treat for readers, if you mention “Luxury Columnist” when booking a treatment at Lumaesthetic, you’ll get 20% off for a limited time only!
I was recently sent a bottle of Institut Esthederm City Protect Spray to try and am loving the hydrating effect as well as the stylish gold packaging. It’s designed to combat pollution and photo-ageing, thanks to its Cellular Water Patent. Seeing as I live right in the City, it’s coming in very handy indeed.
If you’re a fan of designer handbags but not such a fan of the crazy price tags, then you’ll love Bagista. They’re specialists in pre-loved luxury handbags and accessories yet you’d never guess that the items weren’t brand new, they’re in such great condition. They’ve opened a pop-up store at 227 Kings Road, Chelsea, in collaboration with other luxury brands such as Sweetpea & Willow luxury furniture designers, Chelsea Prints, Astrid & Miyu unique jewellery and Maverick & Wolf designer eyewear. I popped along to the launch where I feasted on sweet treats made by the lovely Cupcake King but I’ll definitely be returning to browse their beautifully curated pieces.
This month I was fortunate to be a guest on She Builds Brands, the international radio show hosted every Saturday on Channel Radio by brand expert Kubi Springer. I’d definitely recommend a listen to her upcoming shows or New York City Business Weekender event in November if you’re interested in marketing.
Sometimes you come across an idea so clever that you wonder why no one thought of it before. The clever folks at MyHeritage have come up with a DNA Testing Kit that will reveal your ethnic origins. They’re a leading source of information on family history and their technology enables users to find matches with other users and to expand the details of their family tree. For the DNA kit, its simplicity itself – you order it online, then do a cheek swab which you place in the vial provided and send back for analysis. Now I just have to wait patiently for the results, can’t wait to share them with you!
Travel Tales
The Cotswolds is one of Britain’s most charming areas, with its golden coloured cottages and quaint village pubs. September is a lovely time to visit, when it’s normally gorgeous weather. We headed up there a few weeks ago to visit my sister and her family, including her triplets who have all just got into university – proud Auntie alert! While we weren’t so lucky with the weather, we hardly noticed the downpour thanks to our cosy home from home. Bruern Cottages are a collection of luxury cottages, nestled in the grounds of Bruern Abbey. Only an hour away from London, they’re also close to Daylesford Organic Farm and Bicester Village. We’ll be writing about our stay in detail but here’s a teaser, the beautiful bedroom in our cottage.
This is also a great season to visit Ibiza, as the majority of partygoers have left and you can explore the island’s hidden gems in peace.
For a UK vacation, Bournemouth has one of the most beautiful beaches as well as RockReef PierZip, the world’s only pier to shore zip wire. I tried it and loved it!
youtube
Wining and Dining
Wondering where to eat in September? We’ve got lots of suggestions on seasonal menus and the hottest new restaurants, starting with Mac and Wild. This Fitzrovia stalwart is famous for its Scottish cooking and has over 200 whiskies, craft beers, gins as well as their own range of Scottish cocktails. We recently tried the Summer Menu including a hearty roast with succulent beef and Yorkshire pudding, their award-winning Venimoo venison burger and moriesh Broke Millionaire’s Shortbread.
The Baglioni Hotel in Kensington is another London classic, and I’m a fan of their Italian afternoon tea. They have recently restyled their restaurant to give it a contemporary Italian feel. Brunello at The Baglioni has a new Italian executive chef, Alberto Rossetti. As you can see, the food is a delight, being light yet exceptionally tasty.
To dine in what is arguably the prettiest restaurant in London, head to Bronte. It has been designed by Tom Dixon and has cosy green leather booths, dusty pink chairs, and a pewter bar. There are great views of Trafalgar Square from the leafy terrace. Despite the stylish feel, it’s a very relaxed eatery that’s open all day, serving up modern British and Asian food. Chefs Andrew Lassetter and Guy Betteridge are highly skilled, with every dish being flawless. From the flavourful chilli salt squid to the accomplished lobster tempura and superb miso black cod, there is real passion here. Even the side dishes are interesting – a bowl of 7 types of heritage tomato and another of grilled green courgettes enlivened with black sesame tahini & truffle. You’ll want to save room for desserts like the chocolate bomb with cherry sorbet and hazlenut praline and the pineapple carpaccio with lime and coconut sorbet. There’s also a separate bar menu which sounds tempting, with breakfast dishes, bao buns and the Bronte burger…
For a relaxing meal in Marylebone, you can’t beat Bernardi’s. This neighbourhood Italian restaurant on Seymour Street is open all day for brunch, lunch or dinner and you don’t need to reserve in advance unless you’re a large group. Although the attention to detail is superb, the food isn’t at all fussy, just healthy and delicious. The newly opened basement cocktail bar, The Dog House looks like fun too! We recommend the heritage tomato salad, the rump of Spring lamb and their incredible desserts.
The capital has a stunning new hotel in the shape of  The LaLiT London, set in a former school. This atmospheric boutique hotel combines British charm with Indian culture to great effect and has retained many original features. I recently attended their Indian Independence Day dinner, with live music from famous sitar players. Baluchi restaurant is located in the Grade II listed former Assembly Hall and is without a doubt one of the best places in London to experience Indian cuisine. Admire the blue glass Indian chandeliers whilst you feast on organic dishes created by Executive Chef Arup Dasgupta. With delights such as rassam soup, tender monkfish tikka, butter chicken and a delicate Gulab Jamun cheesecake on the menu, you won’t be disappointed! The LaLiT also has a lovely outdoor shisha terrace for those Indian Summer evenings!
London certainly is a great place to savour all the cuisines of the world and the German picnic at the German Gymnasium is another culinary hotspot set in a historic building. This former gym is now a light and airy all-day café and bar with a charming outdoor terrace and spectacular interior. They’ve come up with a fun idea for Summer, a selection of picnic hampers designed in partnership with Wines of Germany. If the weather isn’t playing ball like on our visit, you can eat it inside the restaurant, but if it’s a sunny day then head to the canalside in King’s Cross. Either way, you’ll enjoy delicacies such as Bavarian Giga rolls filled with a variety of fillings including Black Forest ham and Obatzda cheese. The Nussecken shortbread topped with apricot jam and hazelnuts is a real winner, as are the Niederegger Luebecker Taler marzipan treats. We toasted our feast with sparkling Sekt wine, which is a bit like a German Prosecco, followed by an aromatic white Riesling. They’ve thought of everything, right down to the faux grass table cover and complimentary green sunglasses!
Another good place to soak up those last Summer rays is the new terrace at St Martins Lane in Covent Garden. We’d actually been invited to experience the innovative Speakeasy Cocktail Tea which is served in the hotel’s secret bar, Blind Spot. Guests give a secret password to gain access into this stylish space which hosts regular jazz and swing music sessions. However, with it being a gorgeous day we were tempted outdoors instead. The twist with this tea is that it’s served in the evening, on Sundays to Thursdays from 7 to 9 pm and likely to appeal to men and women alike. That’s thanks to the array of savoury treats such as mini quiche Lorraine, spinach and feta feuilleté and my personal favourite, the mini brioche buns filled with crayfish and mango. They’re served with three cocktails inspired by the British Empire’s tea trade including the Teetotaller with chamomile-infused Grey Goose vodka, the Giggle Water with Bombay Sapphire gin, and Have The Bee’s with Bacardi Carta D’oro rum. Sweet treats such as passion fruit macarons, dulce panna cotta and a chocolate Bailey’s cake are the perfect ending.
We hope you’ve enjoyed this round up of the best September events, style picks, restaurant and travel tips. What do you have planned for September?
