Movie Review: Motichoor Chaknachoor

MOTICHOOR CHAKNACHOOR is a love story of two neighbours. Anita aka Annie (Athiya Shetty) resides in Bhopal and her only aim in life is to marry an NRI and settle abroad. However when she meets prospective grooms, she makes her demand clear and moreover she is bigmouthed. As a result, she gets rejected and in some cases, she rejects when she finds out that the guy is not going to move to foreign shores. Meanwhile, Pushpender Tyagi (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) has just returned from Dubai after a hiatus. He stays with his family in the house next to that of Annie. Pushpender falls for Annie instantly but Annie doesn’t show interest. Just like Annie, even Pushpender wants to get hitched desperately. When an overweight girl agrees to marry him, he gives his nod though he doesn’t have feelings for her.

Pushpender is 36 and he feels that he is way past the age where he can reject any girl. Hence he reluctantly accepts the proposal. Annie meanwhile gives up after rejecting and getting rejected. With no option in hand, her maternal aunt (Karuna Pandey) advises Annie to woo Pushpender. After all, even Pushpender works in Dubai, also a foreign place. Annie hence tries to serenade Pushpender. She tries to first break off his alliance with the overweight girl but her efforts prove futile. Thankfully for Annie, Pushpender’s mother (Vibha Chibber) calls off the alliance when the to-be-bride’s family refuses to pay dowry.

Annie then straightaway tells Pushpender that she wishes to marry him. Pushpender is overjoyed but Annie is a bit reluctant as she can’t pay the kind of dowry that his mother is asking for. Pushpender promises Annie that he won’t ask for a single paisa and both get married on the same day! The families obviously are shocked but they relent eventually. Annie is extremely happy as her dream of marrying an NRI is fulfilled. However, Pushpender has a secret that can prove disastrous for Annie. What happens next forms the rest of the film.

Debamitra Biswal's story is very simple and nothing great but has potential for a fine and entertaining script. The screenplay however is not consistent. There are scenes that are great but those are few and far between. Also, the first half has more interesting scenes than the second half due to which the post-interval portions aren’t that engaging. Bhupendra Singh's dialogues are very funny and clever, and raise laughs.

Debamitra Biswal's direction has promise but falters due to several reasons. On the plus side, the setting looks straight out of life. The director has neatly explained the neighbourhood, the way the houses of Annie and Pushpender are next to each other. Some scenes are very well handled. On the flipside, the interest rises and falls throughout. Also, the second half portions are difficult to digest.

Viewers are forced to accept that it’s Annie who was wrong for marrying Pushpender for the Dubai factor. Even Pushpender has hidden a fact about his employment which was also not acceptable at all. But Pushpender is not made a villain as such. Shockingly, in one crucial scene, he even slaps Annie. If that is not enough, then Annie’s father refuses to take her back in his house. One hopes that towards the end, both will profusely apologize to Annie for their behaviour. Shockingly, that never happens and only Pushpender says sorry, that too by writing a letter. Hence, it becomes difficult to root for such a character

MOTICHOOR CHAKNACHOOR begins on a fair note. The setting and characters are well established. The situations seem comical but don’t really make viewers laugh. But after the initial 30-35 minutes, the film turns into a riot. The scene where Pushpender meets the overweight girl is well executed and written. Same goes for the scene where Pushpender is buying vegetables and gets confronted by Annie. The best part of the first half is when Pushpender beats his brother Hakim with his chappal. The intermission point comes as a bolt from the blue. Post interval, the interest and even the humour quotient dip. The situations become very unconvincing and even regressive to an extent. The climax is supposed to be funny but seems unimaginative.

Talking of performances, Nawazuddin Siddiqui seems a bit off but then gets in the groove. His comic timing as expected is bang on and even in emotional scenes, he is great. Athiya Shetty is a surprise of the film. From her accent to her performance to body language and to her understanding the character, she is spot on! Karuna Pandey gets to play a fine character and is entertaining. Vibha Chibber is decent. Abhishek Rawat (Hakim) is superb as Pushpender’s brother. Navni Parihar (Annie’s mother), Bhumika Dube (Hema), Devansh Kumar (Ikka) and Usha Nagar Dadi are okay.

Music gels well with the film’s narrative. 'Crazy Lagdi' is catchy followed by 'Kaise Banegi Sarkar'. 'Choti Choti Gal' and 'Aaj Jaage Rehna' are soulful but drag the narrative. Abhijeet Vaghani's background score however is terrific and unique.

Suhas Gujarathi's cinematography is very nice. The film has been shot in unconventional locales of Bhopal, that one hasn’t seen in films before. Tariq Umar Khan's production design is realistic. Shadab Malik's costumes are straight out of life. Praveen Kathikuloth's editing is nothing special.

On the whole, MOTICHOOR CHAKNACHOOR boasts of a very entertaining first half but the second half plays spoilsport heavily. At the box office, it will face a tough time due to the lack of buzz.

However, Austin Abrams steals the show in this scene-stealing monologue that explains the scenario almost entirely in one shot and is deserving of an Oscar.

Emma Review: Anya Taylor-Joy Is Superb In Excellent Jane Austen Adaptation

[F]ronted by a captivating performance by Anya Taylor-Joy, and brought to life with beautiful style, it’s a delightful, funny, and sharp take on the material.

In 1995, Amy Heckerling wrote and directed what is arguably the perfect adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma.  Clueless is a modernization, set in mid-‘90s Beverly Hills, and most of the character names are changed, but it’s a wonderful translation of the source material that elegantly and hilariously showcased the timelessness of Austen’s work.

From the perspective of a millennial (of which I am), Clueless is a modern classic, both as a smart literary adaptation and as a movie that encapsulates an era of pop culture. By extension, it’s become a high bar that any other Emma adaptation works to reach, and while that makes for a challenging comparison, it’s one that Autumn de Wilde’s film walks away from positively. The new interpretation stands apart as a more directly faithful cinematic take on the Jane Austen book, complete with all period dressings, and fronted by a captivating performance by Anya Taylor-Joy, and brought to life with beautiful style, it’s a delightful, funny, and sharp take on the material.

Written by Eleanor Catton, Emma transports us back to 19th century England where we are introduced to Emma Woodhouse (Anya Taylor-Joy), a spoiled young woman who lives with her emotionally and physically fragile father (Bill Nighy), and while maintaining her own independence gets a special kick out of playing matchmaker. Unfortunately, it’s a habit that results in some dire consequences when she tries to meddle in the love life of her new friend, Harriet (Mia Goth).

When Emma learns that Harriet is romantically linked with a young farmer named Robert Martin (Connor Swindells), and that a proposal is imminent, she does what she can to disrupt the relationship so that she can try and “help” her friend finder a husband of a higher class – with Emma’s step brother, George Knightley (Johnny Flynn), making his protest well known. Emma sees potential for something between Harriet and the vicar Mr. Elton (Josh O'Connor), who seems to show an interest, but in cascading, farcical, and emotional fashion, things fall apart, leaving our protagonist to try and make things right while learning some important things about herself along the way.

Emma is not only successfully laugh-out-loud funny, but earnestly emotionally.

This is very much a case of the filmmakers behind a project loving the source material and understanding that they need to get out of the way of its unfolding story, and it’s simply a brilliant experience. While always feeling entirely authentic to its time period, the banter between characters is effortlessly quick and witty, while wonders are done with well-drawn caricatures. Miranda Hart is fantastic as the trying-too-hard Miss Bates, regularly and unwittingly boring everyone around her to tears; and Bill Nighy’s Mr. Woodhouse is delightfully weird, regularly fighting a war in his own home against a persistent draft with a series of carefully aligned screens.

What’s so impressive about Emma, though, is that it’s able to make you consistently laugh out loud, but also deeply feel for the characters. There is a scene late in the film when a casually stated insult aimed at Miss Bates lands with face-melting devastation; and though we may laugh at Mr. Woodhouse’s eccentricity, the love he has for his daughter is palpable and universally relatable.

Anya Taylor-Joy continues to prove herself as an excellent young talent.

It’s an excellent cast through and through, with Mia Goth providing Harriet with a lovely naivety, and Johnny Flynn makes for a perfectly charming Mr. Knightley, but as the title suggests, Emma is Anya Taylor-Joy’s show, and she is outstanding. Thus far we have primarily watched the actress at the center of dark and horrific tales like The Witch, Split, and Thoroughbreds, but she noticeably brings a special lightness to the role that proves entirely necessary.

Emma is a fascinating character, as her egocentricity in tandem with her matchmaking creates a messy selfish altruism that is exciting to explore, and Anya Taylor-Joy does an amazing job capturing that very specific energy. Her being so self-centered doesn’t make her the easiest protagonist to fall in love with, but the journey that the actress takes with her over the course of the narrative accentuates the growth in her, and completely wins you over.

Emma is as beautiful as it is entertaining.

Making Emma all the more exciting is the fact that it marks the feature directorial debut of Autumn de Wilde. The filmmaker is far from a novice, having spent 15 years making music videos for bands and singers like Beck, The Raconteurs, and Florence + The Machine, but still it’s thrilling to see the emergence of someone in the medium with such bold style. As cold and intimidating the grand estates can be, de Wilde uncovers a homey quality that never undercuts the beauty or stateliness. The color palette at play is utterly mesmerizing, particularly an eye-popping use of yellow. It’s a stunning work visually through-and-through, and the kind of movie you could watch on mute.

Being released just a few months after Greta Gerwig’s  Little Women, Emma feels like it is arriving at the exact perfect time, and deserves similar recognition for being a marvelous take on a piece of classic literature that doesn’t take the work out of its original element. Autumn de Wilde, Anya Taylor-Joy and everyone else involved with the production absolutely do right by Jane Austen, and it’s deserving of a large audience for doing so. on Afdah

Review of "Never Let Go": Halle Berry Gets Spooky

The direction of Alexandre Aja works okay. Positively, the director, who has directed movies such as THE HILLS HAVE EYES, masterfully creates an uncanny atmosphere on Afdah tv. The audience will be taken aback by a few unexpected twists that they won't have predicted. Conversely, the storyline is overly intricate. The viewers will be left perplexed since the creators fail to simplify the proceedings. The first part is a patience test because it moves slowly. Fortunately, the tale moves forward a bit in the second half. Finally, a significant character in the movie ends up having nothing to do, which may not appeal to all viewers. Halle Berry pulls off a challenging assignment with style.

The review of the substance: Amazingly, none of them

In a spine-tingling "birth" sequence, Elisabeth gives birth to Sue, who then emerges from her back. Maintaining these "selves" takes a lot of work: one of them must survive intravenously for seven days while the other sleeps, on the mystery contents of weekly kits that are delivered to a locked safe on Afdah Movies. The usual disclaimer applies: they have to alternate every seven days and the equilibrium needs to be maintained. As expected, Elisabeth and Sue require constant reminders that "there is only one of you." The stage is set for disaster: Elisabeth's body swells and decays with each temporal infraction as Sue, the network's favorite, quickly rises to prominence and starts to test the limits of her waking hours. She shrinks, gorges on food, and descends into frenzied misery.

A review of the film "The Killer's Game"

There aren't many thrilling moments in "The Killer's Game" movie. Before starting to write this review, I did some web browsing and discovered that this film has been around for a while, having been passed around between multiple studios since the 1990s in Afdah Movie. More interesting to me than anything in the movie was reading about the problematic production. Maybe I would be writing a completely different review if it had been filmed and released in the late 1990s. Hitman Joe Flood starts "The Killer's Game" by working at an opera house during a dance performance. The crowd and artists become terrified when the hit goes wrong. Joe and lead dancer Maize end up getting together as a result of this.

"The Union," Halle Berry divulges how she had Roxanne's hair chopped

They haven't seen each other in a very long time; Mike works in construction. We find out that they were once a couple in high school, that Roxanne broke up with him before going missing. They didn't immediately strike up a chemistry that I had anticipated afdah tv. Of course, there are the obligatory exchanges of barbs and quips. However, it's more like watching Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry as mere movie characters. Berry is five years older than Wahlberg, despite the fact that both are still in their 50s and still look good. Meanwhile, Mark Wahlberg remains the same Mark Wahlberg—you either adore him or despise him. Personally, I think that throughout, he seems to be phoning it in.
