afar; na jaemin [finale]

this was it, they thought. the two stayed still inside the car, not moving. jaemin tried to let go but his body just won't let him. when she finally braved herself to pull away from his grip, she silently wiped her tears that fell unconsciously throughout the ride to the airport. the sky was still dark early in the morning. dami turned her head to face jaemin and brought her hand to touch his cheek.

"i'll go now." she whispered.

jaemin couldn't answer immediately and he couldn't even look her in the eyes. he promised to himself that he would be strong and he would be brave but he couldn't even look her in the eyes.

dami's hands started to shake and she finally started moving her legs to go out of the car. in an instant, without much thought, jaemin also walked out of the car. he was strictly told to not leave the car, that was his condition to send her off at the airport, but he just couldn't let her walk out on him again.

when dami was on her feet she was surprised when she saw jaemin running towards her, crashing on to her, almost tripping her back.

"you can't go out the car, jaemin." she whispered in the crook of his neck.

"we can't make this work, can we?" jaemin asked. his voice was no longer desperate. there was no longer a strain on his voice as he asked the question. he understood the role he was put in and he had to push through it. he was finally at a place where he had to let her go. dami still kept her eyes trained to meet his before she shook her head,

“i love you,” those three words that was never said but has always been there are finally uttered, “it’s crazy—i’ve never said it before but i always have and always will. in the future, if our paths ever cross once more, know that i will always be here. if the world will ever be kind enough to accept this love, know that i will always be here.”

dami was thinking of words she wanted to say, what she needed to say. she had practiced her monologue over and over again but hearing jaemin's vulnerable words made her head go dizzy. she can no longer recall the things she had practiced, “whatever happens in the future… i want you to also know that you are the best thing that ever happened to me. even if—even if our paths don’t cross, even if we don’t see each other ever again after this… i am yours. never forget that. i too have never said it but… i love you, na jaemin.”

“you are and always will be my last, kang dami.”

the one and only time they finally say i love you to each other is the last time they will ever get to say it – or will it be the last time?

"a toast!" yumi cheered, holding the beer on her hand. dami along with yumi, haerin, hyunki, and daejung were spending their last dinner before dami has to fly tomorrow morning.

"to dami!" haerin started, "to the most understanding, full of love, caring person we've ever met. i hope you have all the success and kindness in the world!" with that all five of them cheered.

"also dami," daejung suddenly said, voice much quieter, afraid of his own question, "how are things with... you know... jaemin?"

the others were surprised to see dami smiling after hearing the question instead of how they expected her to react. she seemed to be in a much better place. they can tell she was still heartbroken, keeping to herself, but her smile felt genuine.

"i love him," dami said, "it's funny i've never actually said it to him and he's never said it to me but i know we love each other. i think, for now it just doesn't make sense to continue our relationship because well you guys have seen the result of it. i can't let him go just yet. i don't think i'll ever let him go. but i do believe that when the time is right and the world is ready, we'll meet again."

hyunki was listening to her every word. a heavy feeling weighed on his chest but he kept a strong face. he knew in this moment that jaemin meant the world to dami.

AUGUST 2022

Jaemin’s hands were sweating. His throat still feels dry even after drinking 3 glasses of water. He was beyond nervous. What did Dami want to talk about? Is it important? Is she trying to get back together? He was coming up with all sorts of scenarios but there was one he didn’t want to think about. Dami moving out of Seoul. He had heard it from Chenle – just rumors – talks that Dami was gonna move somewhere. It was just in passing that he mentioned it but Jaemin can’t quite get it out of his head.

He was getting closer to the cafe they used to always go to. The decorations were the same, the small benches in front of the cafe were the same, but they were not. He walked in and was met by the girl he couldn’t wait to meet. Dami’s back was visible from where he was standing. He dragged his feet slowly to where she sat. 

Finally reaching his destination, the two locked eyes. None of them said anything and Jaemin didn’t immediately sit down. He was still wearing his mask and bucket hat so Dami couldn’t study his face. But Jaemin could see hers perfectly. She wasn’t wearing any makeup, just some leftover mascara from the day before. Her hair was tied in a low ponytail and her lips were dry. Both her hands were holding the coffee that looked like it was already cold by the time he arrived. And then her eyes watered. He could see clearly that her nose started to turn red – not because of the cold – but because her eyes were tearing up. She quickly put her head down and pointed at the seat in front of her.

“You can sit down.” She said,

“Right.” He mumbled. He sat down as he took off his mask,  “Hi.”

“Hi.” A beat passed and no one said anything.

“Why did you.. What did you wanna talk about?” He nervously asked.

“I–” She stopped, bracing herself for the words she’s about to speak, “I’m quitting.”

He didn’t react. He kept his eyes trained on her waiting for more explanation, “But I’m not just quitting. I’m also moving.”

This was what he was afraid of.

“I put in my two weeks notice last week. So this week is my last week with SM. My new job starts in two weeks so I’ll move out by the end of next week.”

He still didn’t say anything, but his eyes were still unwavering from her face. Even when she was looking down at her coffee, “Where?”

“New york.” His heart sank.

“New york?” She nodded. Then his eyes fell, “You’re leaving for New York next week?” She nodded again, keeping her silence, “When have you been planning to leave Korea?”

“Not too long ago honestly,” She answered in a quiet voice, “The opportunity came by and it felt like the right time.”

“The right time?”

“To leave Korea.”

“To leave Korea…” Jaemin kept repeating everything she said. It was like he couldn’t believe what was happening in front of him, "and is this... is this what– what you want?"

"Honestly, I don't know." She answered truthfully, "But I know it's the best for me now. I can't be here, Jaemin. And it's not your fault. Please don't even for a second think this is because of you. I'm just... not strong enough to be here."

He words were to honest that he felt his lips quiver. She was being her most vulnerable in front of him. Without realizing he shed a tear.

"I'm gonna start crying if you cry." She whispered, already head down hiding her face.

"Sorry," He quickly wiped his tears away. He calmed himself down and tried to stop his tears but it wasn't working. More tears kept coming out and instead of hiding it, he was looking at her straight on, "I miss you."

She was sobbing by this point. Her head still looking down, hands on her lap, "Me too."

"Can we– meet up more? before you leave? if you don't want to it's okay– i'm not... I just want to be with you awhile longer." Jaemin stuttered.

"I'd love that, Jaem."

note–i think there's probably like 2/3 chapters left before i wrap this up!!!!

jaemin ended up going. he got there the earliest out of all the dreamies. he said hello, he sat, he ate, but he didn't speak. dami was there. she was the last to arrive and they once again pretended to be strangers. the rest of the group pretended with them.

jaemin didn't even finish his bowl of food before excusing himself to catch some fresh air outside. he stood outside for the past 20 minutes – far from any interaction from the rest of the group. why am i still here, he thought. why am i hurting myself, he asked. jeno walked outside to check up on his best friend. he finds himself worrying about jaemin more than himself for the past month or two. the two stood next to each other in silence and before jeno could ask how he was, jaemin beat him to it.

“you know, i never told her that i love her,” jaemin blurted out, “3 years i’ve known her. 3 years i’ve been head over heels for her. 2 and a half years i’ve been a coward. but when i finally built enough courage to confess… 5 months… we were only together for 5 months. this is so fucking funny.” he's barely had anything to eat and a lot of drink tonight. his head is making him dizzy and his mouth running.

“jaem—”

“i tried to hate her. i tried to pretend like i don’t feel anything but it’s no use. ‘cause she’s there. all the fucking time. i wake up, i think of her. i go to work, i see her face. i go back home, i sleep, and i dream of her. she’s all i can think about and it’s making me—” he stopped, “angry.”

“how am i supposed to love what i do—love my job—if this job is the reason why my heart is breaking every single day. what’s worse is that i can’t even talk about it. i have to smile and act as if i’m having the best time ever when all i wanna talk about is how much i miss dami’s obsession with strawberries even though i despise it. i can’t talk about how much i miss her voice when she wakes up in the morning. i can’t tell the world that she is the only thing that makes me want to be a better person because the world doesn’t want it. they don’t want to know anything about her and i am frustrated.” his whispers could almost be mistaken as screams at this point, “if this is love, i dont want it.”

MARCH 2022

“did you get home safe?” jaemin struggled to find the words to talk to her and dami could feel his nervousness even through the phone.

“mmhm, am home. safe.” dami mumbled over the phone.

“good, yeah—okay… that’s good,” silenced came to greet them as the both of them are too scared to speak up. dispatched had just released their pictures and in this moment where they could spend what potentially could be their last moments together are spent apart from one another, “how did—”

“just say it, jaemin.” dami finally cut him off, “please, no sugarcoating. we both know the pictures are out and it’s only a matter of time before people find out it’s me. so, just say whatever you need to say.”

jaemin contemplated on not saying anything, in fact, he contemplated on pretending that the whole dispatch scandal didn’t happen at all. but, there was no way they could run away from it.

“i think… for a while… we should lay low… and by that i mean we should—” jaemin couldn’t finish his sentence. he didn’t want to have to end things but when the company found out jaemin was lying about having a girlfriend, they were bewildered. they pressured him to end things. it makes sense, he thought. it would be easier to hide her identity. this was for the best, he repeated to himself, “break up.”

“did the company asked you to or…”

“no.” he lied.

“okay.” dami was quick to answer. it took jaemin by surprise how fast her response was. he hasn’t even processed what he had said and she already agreed.

“o–okay?” jaemin’s voice was faltering down and it was apparent even from across the phone.

“mmhm,” dami tried her best to held in her tears, making sure jaemin couldn’t hear her, “i understand.”

jaemin broke dami’s heart, but it broke him the same knowing that she didn’t even try to fight him on it.

AUGUST 2021

the night was filled with sounds of laughter as well as behind the scenes stories the boys are bringing up on the dinner table. dami and hyunki arrived at chenle’s at 8 and now it’s almost midnight. dami was supposed to go home with hyunki since she came with him but unfortunately he had to pick up his little brother at the airport which was the opposite direction of dami’s apartment. the dream boys were also planning on staying over chenle’s for the night so she can’t ask the boys to drive her home.

“he got an earlier flight than i thought,” hyunki began, “sorry dams. unless you wanna go to incheon and meet hyunjoo?”

“um.. no i am too tired. i’ll just wait for the bus. it’s not past midnight yet, so i hope it still runs pretty frequently.” dami answered.

“nuna, i can call a taxi for you.” jisung said.

“no, it’s okay. i’ll take the bus.”

“i can…” jaemin suddenly spoke up, “i can drive you home.”

as usual, jaemin didn’t speak a word to her throughout the dinner. they said hi, laughed at each other’s jokes, but they didn’t share a proper conversation, “you really don’t have to!” said dami.
