AEW World’s End 2024 Review
Match 1: Will Ospreay VS Kyle Fletcher, Continental Classic Semi-Final 1
Oh, what a match!! Absolutely fantastic
I knew this one would be good, but one thing I wasn’t expecting was Ospreay having a full crimson mask for most of the match, those visuals, holy shit
Some of those spots were insane, which was to be expected with these two
Something I didn’t expect was Kyle losing though?? I was so convinced that he would win, but I guess this does set up a third match between them. AEW does love a trilogy!! And I can’t really complain, I love these two together
4.5/5
Match 2: Kazuchika Okada VS Ricochet, Continental Classic Semi-Final 2
Okay, listen. Okada running the ropes so enthusiastically before stopping completely just to slap Ricochet’s bald head was the funniest thing to happen in wrestling this year, and you can’t convince me otherwise
The rest of the match also slapped
There wasn’t really a doubt for me that Okada would win after Ospreay won the first semi-final, that match was too good to pass up
Plus, they’d been making too much of a big deal out of him being THE tournament wrestler that him not at least making the final would have been ridiculous
Not really the match itself, but I’m counting it - Swerve coming out with Nana to mock Ricochet and get everyone to throw toilet paper at him had me dying laughing, mostly at Ricochet’s face while it happened. I’m interested to see where that feud is going to go
4/5
Match 3: Mariah May VS Thunder Rosa, Tijuana Street Fight, AEW Women’s World Championship
I was looking forward to this match and it really didn’t disappoint and had a lot of fun moments
Stuff like the thumbtacks in the piñata and the dust/sand from the graveyard were so entertaining
Mariah’s heel work is just fantastic, she’s genuinely one of the most easily hatable heels in the company, like her stealing Thunder’s father’s cane and pretending to use it was brilliant
The final table spot before the match ended was BRUTAL and it was the perfect finish
3.75/5
Match 4: MJF VS Adam Cole, Dynamite Diamond Ring
I’ll be honest, the build to this match hasn’t really done anything for me, so I wasn’t really invested going into it
I was right to be that way, it was a bit of a non-event
Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed parts of it, like MJF getting Taven and Bennett ejected from ringside, that was fun
But the finish kind of fell flat for me, and Kyle coming out to help Cole didn’t make sense, there hadn’t been any indication that he was coming around to the idea of joining the others in the Undisputed Kingdom
I’m just hoping that this feud either ends or takes a drastically different turn, because both guys need it at this point
3/5
Match 5: Konosuke Takeshita VS Powerhouse Hobbs, AEW International Championship
Let it be know that I, like Big E, LOVE seeing two big meaty men slapping meat
And these two hunks did not disappoint
Takeshita is just SO good, and Hobbs can match (and probably exceed) his physical strength, so this match was insanely fun to watch
You know it’s a good match when the crowd are chanting ‘MEAT’ for most of it
The false finishes were really good, and the actual finish was great
I had a feeling Takeshita would win this, if for no other reason than Wrestle Kingdom and Wrestle Dynasty and how him still having the International Championship makes him look even stronger going in (prayer circle for Take Two Belts in 2025, let’s gooooo!!!)
However, the result being a bit predictable didn’t impact my enjoyment of the match in the slightest, really fun, one that I’ll have to go back and rewatch again
4/5
Match 6: Mercedes Moné VS Kris Statlander, AEW TBS Championship
This match. THIS MATCH.
Mercedes’ best match in AEW to this point, and to be honest Kris’ too
These two have such insane chemistry together, and they just went OFF in this match
All those piledrivers and near falls had me jumping out of my seat, and that moment when Kris JUST beat the count was a highlight of the whole show for me
Overall a phenomenal match, and it’s just further proof that women’s matches should be given more time, both on TV and PPV
GIVE US THE 60 MINUTE IRON WOMAN REMATCH TONY KHAN YOU COWARD
5/5
Match 7: Kazuchika Okada (C) VS Will Ospreay, Continental Championship/Continental Classic
Genuinely, this show just kept ramping up after Takeshita/Hobbs, and this match knocked it out of the park
I was worried at the start during Ospreay’s entrance because of how loopy he was acting (I didn’t want this to be comedy based/a replacement to be called), but once the match actually started all that went out the window
I didn’t realise how much I missed seeing these two in a ring together until this match
Who would have thought that putting two of the legit best wrestlers in the world in front of a hot crowd and letting them go off would make for such a good match? (I did, I remember their older matches all too well)
I genuinely have too many good things to say about this match, it was just excellent, and I think the right person won
I don’t want to hear a single bad thing said about Okada ever again after this match, there are so few wrestlers who can just casually put out an incredibly late contender for match of the year and make it look so effortless, and he is absolutely one of them (and, of course, so is Ospreay)
This next part does not have any effect on my rating for the match, but I OBVIOUSLY had to mention what happened post-match
MY GOAT IS BACK BABYYYYYY
I was SO happy to see Kenny back, I had a feeling he would show up in some way considering he’s making his in-ring comeback in a few days, but coming out to have an intense stare down with arguably his best rival??? While teasing another match between them next summer???? Lost my mind
I’m also interested to see what Christopher Daniels’ situation is going forward and what it means, very intriguing
5/5
Match 8: Jon Moxley (C) VS Orange Cassidy VS Jay White VS Hangman Adam Page, 4-Way Match, AEW Men’s World Championship
There were some things about this match that I liked, the start was very chaotic and fun, so was the triple powerbomb through the announce table (classic)
However, compared to some other matches on the card, I really don’t think this should have main evented. Like you mean to tell me you have Ospreay/Okada absolutely tear the house down AND have Kenneth Jerome Omega return immediately after, only to follow up with THIS match?? Be so fucking serious
Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t dislike this match at all, I actually enjoyed it for what it was
But even with Adam Copeland returning (who is one of my favourites of all time, by the way), I don’t think it was a big enough deal to main event over some of the other matches, which is a shame
A good match, with a sudden ending that for me came a bit out of nowhere, but I digress
3.75/5
All in all, a very fun show with some INCREDIBLE highlights that I’ll definitely be going back to rewatch at some point in the next few days. Some fun surprises and unexpected moments that I’ll be thinking about for a while.
Overall rating: 4.5/5
