What did you think of Emma (2020)?

I quibble with some of the adaptational choices, but I was so swept up in the Aesthetique I can’t dwell on them. It was such a visually stunning film. Every movement through the frames was beautifully choreographed. I nerded out-- and am still nerding out!-- over the costumes and color palettes. It’s so clear that the costumer, production designer, director, etc. did their research. The costumes were sooooo gooood. Even the shoes looked right! (Something I am noticing because I’m laughing my way through The Tudors-- an alternate universe England where apparently stockings haven’t been invented! No lady ever wears them! It’s skirt up, bare legs, every. Single. Time. Henry VIII’s sister Princess Margaret wears bedazzled espadrilles on her bare feet in her whole wedding sequence to the king of Portugal.)

I don’t like Mr. Knightley as a character-- I mean, I think he is a great character, but personally the whole “he’s been in love with her since she was thirteen” aged so WILDLY BADLY that I don’t enjoy the romance in Emma. If I reread it, it’s for the riddles, or to find some detail about Regency life I recall. But Johnny Flynn convinced me to like him! His manner of delivering lectures, and Anne Taylor Joy’s way of responding to them made me feel less weird about their relationship and made it seem a lot more like arguing equals who were just so accustomed to having their own way they butted heads frequently. I loved the focus on Emma and Harriet’s friendship, and the line of red cloaked young ladies trailing after Mrs. Goddard like bonneted ducklings. 

By far my favorite part of the film though, was the reactions of the servants. The two poor footmen who deal with Mr. Woodhouse and his screens steal every scene they’re in. The best part of the whole movie, to me, was when Mr. Knightley gets home, tears off his coat, and collapses dramatically on the floor-- just in time for a footman to walk in through the doorway, take stock of the situation in half-a-second, turn on his heel, and march away. I have been there, Servant at Mr. Knightley’s House. You made the right choice.

Honestly, the two characters that I *most* associate with you are the Darkling (dramatic bitch that loves to lounge) & Henry Winter (everything, but mostly your commitment to the aesthetic)... like those are the two I see and think of you.

absolutely fantastic tbh... a very good representation of the kind of drama and aesthetique I like to bring to daily life with a subtle nod at the fact that I’m completely deranged!!

aunt caroline’s joy mojo (proprietary formula) based on an old voodoo recipe from new orleans. described as “bottled happiness” and tbh? it works!!! smother it on!!!! feel joy again!!!!

fairy wine (dandelion, honey, red currants) this perfume activated my sense memory and sent me hurtling straight past five glasses of wine right to the verge of vomiting so of course i had to purchase it immediately

l’heure verte (absinthe, sugar, opium smoke) so aesthetique i think i’ll die

leanan sidhe (native irish herbs and flowers) as an irish fae spirit who moonlights as a vampiric muse i really feel seen and represented by this perfume oil.

rose red (rose and dew) if i could smell like roses all the time i absolutely would. i want to bathe in this. i want henry cavill to massage it into my skin. i want roses to literally bloom where i walk. i feel like this is not too much to ask.

“Well, I was hired as a thief, they can’t complain if I act like one.” he’s amused that she believes that would stop him- morally, taking candy wasn’t the worst thing that he could do. If anyone’s in need for that talk, many Sully and Henry will be the ones in need for it, given brashly trying to coax everyone into fighting her, or just...whatever Henry did was likely a bit worse. 

His lips quirk up into a smile at her agreement- he’d be willing to split the goods for her trouble, especially since he has his eyes on a couple of different things, not just chocolate. Chocolate is good, though, he’ll give her that. Meisha has good taste and having a Pegasus knight on his side will make escaping all the easier- especially with Gaius’ skills.

“Eh, it’s not too hard to pick up, just follow your instincts when I’ve not given instructions. Though, this sounds like the beginning of a beautiful partnership, Chiffon.” Sugarcubes is a new name, but he’ll take it. “You wanna hit the place up at night? Our chances will be better then, but if you want a challenge? Daylight never hurt anyone.”
