Happy Storyteller Saturday! Who would your characters be if they were Greek Gods/Goddesses? (I was asked this question recently and found it fascinating so I'm passing it along!)
Oooh, yeah I like this!
Dr. Agau would be Hera like in demeanor: cold, harsh, punishing, etc. Her domain would probably be something like medicine and intelligence. Very authoritative. Doesn’t come down to earth to fuck around, figuratively or literally.
Beth is, of course, a deity of the ocean and also of storms. She is a goddess that has a lot of parallel imagery: she is portrayed both as kind and smiling, her blonde hair flowing in the water and her eyes closed, AND as a powerful storm goddess who has lightning cracking through her hair and bright blue eyes glaring at you. So she’s like a Zeus/Poseidon mashup!
There’s a legend about her that tells the story of how she came to earth and fell in love with a mortal. She snuck into her mother’s library and stole the knowledge on how to make him one of them.
So when Hans became a god, he becomes a god of the skies and the weather. He’s also sort of a protector god, and is prayed to for safe travels. (Over land, that is. His wife receives the prayers of shipgoers)
Hallie is a goddess of time and age. While Agau is the one prayed to for cures to sicknesses already ailing people, she is the one they pray to for long life, safety, continued good health. She ALSO controls the seasons!
Her image among the people is sort of... aloof but well intentioned? Like, she doesn’t answer all the prayers dedicated to her, but if she does, she DELIVERS.
Christian is the god of volcanoes and fire, but this includes the Hestia vibe of hearth and the warmth of family and home. For being such a god, he’s not really seen as... relatable? Or beloved?
At least not by the general populace; he also serves as the protector of outcasts. He’s somewhat like Hephaestus, with the volcano thing and the “reject god” vibe.
Matt is just about the opposite: beloved by the general citizens, and has a cheery and benevolent personality. This is a little at odds with his divine purpose: he is a patron god of warriors and is prayed to for strength and success in battle. So like a kinder Ares?
Michael serves as the god of death, but not like... carnage-death, more like... The moment of passing. His prayers are for the end of suffering, for quick and easy deaths (and probably honorable deaths too), for safe passage to the other world.
But ya know, he’s also called on to kill your enemies. (Which he doesn’t do, but hey).
Note: according to legend, he and Beth are the only deities created directly by Agau’s hand out of nothing.
Note, the Sequel: Finnigan is the god of family

Happy Storyteller Saturday! Do you spend a lot of time naming your characters? I swear, I probably spend weeks naming mine and I'm curious if other people do the same.
hello!! hmMMMMm. i can’t say that i spend a lot of time naming my characters, but i spend a long time figuring it out. does that make sense?? i don’t exactly sit down and brainstorm really hard for my character names, i just.. not write until they come to me. like i can’t keep writing without knowing their names, but i also don’t exactly spend time thinking about it. they’ll come if they come. most of my names are given on the spur of the moment, and i guess they stick. thanks!!

A couple of interesting and insightful reviews here from the lovely @aeschknight.
February Reads Pt. 1
This past month was a busy one for me reading wise. I read four books this month and I’m going to break up these posts because of how long it would be otherwise. These are the first two that I read! Video can be found here.
1. Shakespeare & Company by Sylvia Beach
First Published: 1956
Page Count: 217
Read For: University
This was my first time reading this book and in fact my first time hearing about Shakespeare & Company. This is a memoir written by Sylvia Beach, a woman largely forgotten by literary history despite how much she shaped it. Now she’s mostly remember as the first person to publish James Joyce’s controversial Ulysses but she did far more for the literary world than just that. Beach founded Shakespeare & Company a library and bookstore in Paris, France. Because Beach was an American her bookstore was English and was one of the earliest English bookstores in Paris. She only put books that she personally enjoyed in her store. That tidbit of information is very important because Beach’s personal taste largely makes up the modernist literary canon today. For those who don’t constantly have the words “literary canon” thrown in your face, it’s basically what is considered a good literary example of a certain time period. All of Beach’s favs, and most of her friends, make up this canon.
This is an interesting read because it’s largely a collection of anecdotes about Beach’s friends. Many of criticized the book because of that; they feel that it isn’t really about Beach at all. I think it’s very telling that only dedicates a few pages to her life before Shakespeare & Company and stops before it shows her life once the store closed. The store and the amazing people she met through it were Beach’s life and she truly showed that in her writing. Not to mention her intimate friendship with some of these largely recognizable names gives way to fascinating stories. She gives intimate details on James Joyce as a person and talks about the adventures she went on with Ernest Hemingway. She invites the readers to know these people as well. All in all it was an interesting read and nto very difficult to get through.
I love little artist hang-outs and Shakespeare & Company was one of the biggest and most influential gathering places in Paris during the 1920s. It closed in 1941. However, it’s legacy continues in a beautiful way. It’s been reincarnated, still in Paris and still named Shakespeare & Company. The new Shakespeare & Company is a haven for creative people of all sorts. You can even stay there! It seems like such a neat place and I’d love to go one day. You can find out more about it here.
2. The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath
First Published: 1963
Page Count: 244
Read For: University
This is an incredible novel that I highly recommend but before I go any further in my recommendation I want to mention that there is triggering content within the novel. I’m not really going to go into any detail here but I will go ahead and list what that content is so that everyone is aware of it: self-harm, suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, mentions of suicide, and sexual assault. Smaller warnings would include that this story is set in the 50s so you have ideas of the time about women’s roles (more of just an annoyance warning). There’s also a lot of talk of pregnancy and stuff which makes some people uncomfortable so just a warning. And depression. Lotta depression.
Sylvia Plath. What words are there. I’ve always loved her work but this novel really hit home for me. The Bell Jar is a pseudo-autobiographical novel and largely follows Plath’s own life though the novel stops before finishing the way her own life did. It should be noted that Sylvia Plath did not have much happiness in her life. She struggled deeply and truly. Most now believe she had Bipolar Disorder which is perhaps why I feel so connected to her and her work. What she describes is all too familiar to me. This novel was published 3 months before she killed herself. Reading the work shows why that’s an important fact. I’d highly recommend reading about Plath before you read this novel so you truly see those real world connections.
The novel follows Esther Greenwood, a college girl who’s always been top of her class and had her life together until suddenly she started to feel lost and sad without knowing why. She had her whole life figured out, why didn’t it seem right anymore? Esther falls into a deep depression and decides that she wants to die instead of having to fix all of this. There’s a shitty doctor who is introduced but as her later doctor shows, not all of them are bad. I genuinely love the psychiatrist she gets later in the novel. She’s a beautiful example of what mental health doctors can be like. But that’s jumping ahead a bit. Esther eventually gets the help that she needs and starts to get herself back on track. She also takes her life into her own hands so that she doesn’t have to rely on others (because of the time “others” connotes the husband that society dictates she should have by now).
The novel very accurately portrays the struggle with finding where to go and shows that when you walk alone, it’s a lot harder. It also very accurately portrays depression and anxiety, because Plath deeply understood. I found this to be an extremely relatable novel and, in fact, it’s pretty accurate in some ways to my own situation. I, too, am figuring out what to do next after college so perhaps I had a stronger connection with Esther/Plath (it’s hard not to count the author when the story follows her life). My only “complaint” is that the ending is abrupt and leaves the story open to interpretation. I think Plath just wanted to leave Esther’s story in a potentially happy life considering her own was so close to the end.
If you’ve read either or just have any thoughts/opinions, let me know! I’ll post part 2 soon with the other books and will link everything together.

Find The Word Tag
thank you for tagging me!! @romenna the words I had to find were bright, know, grass and help and I searched for them in my current wip ‘mahlyn’!
BRIGHT
A bright brown leather pouch is shovelled onto the bar, coins clinking quietly within. I don’t need to give it a closer look, but even if I wanted to, the lady palms the bag again quickly and puts it back into her coat in the blinking of an eye. “Do we have a deal?” she asks solemnly.
KNOW
I close my eyes before the images get too real. „I left Youn there.“ My breath is heavy and shaky and I can smell the blood and taste it in my mouth and and I want to choke it all out, I want to scream. But instead, I am whispering. „I still don‘t know who he was. I don‘t remember what happened clearly enough, I don‘t think he ever introduced himself,“ I let out a dry laughter, „why would he, anyway? Since then he has been following me. He wants to kill me, Raeven, like he killed her. I don‘t know what to do.“
GRASS
My mouth opens with the intention of saying goodbye, but no words pass my lips. Raeven cracks a smile, pulling me in for a hug. I am pressed against his warm chest, smell his body, his hair, the scent of wood and grass and trees in the undergrowth I haven‘t smelled in so long.
HELP
But what I do remember is the blood. So, so much blood. Blood on the floor. Blood on the walls. Even at the ceiling. Blood on my clothes and my hands and in my hair and everywhere and I couldn‘t get rid of it because I was drowning in it and I couldn‘t breathe nor find a way out and I had to stay with my friend, I had to help her – for the blood was hers. And she would not stop losing it.
I barely post my writing so I guess! these snippets actually tell a lot about mahlyn and marea sjsjsjsk like this is basically all that ever happens. bargains. death. some cute shit. death. blood. that‘s all
I‘m tagging some of my new mutuals!!! only do it if you want to, of course! @theythoughtthelionswerebad @vespatrix @trifoyle @vhum @allisonwyeth @aeschknight your words are smirk, red, pain and light (in any form)

I’m *sort of* back (aka FUBAR and foobar)
It’s been a while...about 6 months or so since I last posted anything at all on here...and I thought I *really* should let you all know that I am still here and I am alive.
I’ve not written anything since my failed attempt at NaNo last year, and although I started a sketch a week or two (or three?) ago, it’s still sitting there unfinished...
So, what’s been going on?
I’ve struggled with mental health issues around my redundancy last year, and my inability - so far - to find a new job. Not that the current climate has helped in any way, shape or form. That said, I was already pretty much isolating before COVID hit, so it wasn’t a huge adjustment in some ways.
I am now feeling a little more positive - I’ve widened my job search to Python developer roles (which I think would suit me better) as well as Business Analyst roles, and I’ve been given a small financial reprieve in the form of a tax refund from HMRC that should keep me going for a couple more months.
...That’s the FUBAR part...
...so what’s the foobar bit about?
foobar is a term often used in programming circles, where you’ll see example code written like:
x = foo + bar
in this case, it refers to something that found me a week or so ago - the Google foobar coding challenge.
I’d been doing a lot of searches related to Python coding for a combination of a personal coding project I’m doing (as a portfolio piece for prospective employers) and a course that I was taking to test my current skills over 100 coding challenges. Then the search results page seemed to tilt backwards revealing a message along the lines of “You’re speaking our language, would you like to take a challenge?”
It’s been interesting so far, interpreting the requirements that are given in the form of a story narrative (complete the challenges to progress through the evil mastermind’s organisation to thwart her plans) and working out how to code them so that they pass a set of criteria - some that you’re given up front and others that you don’t know what they are.
I’m half-way through level 2 and have just picked up the new challenge this morning, so that’ll keep me busy for the next couple of days (I have 72 hours to complete and submit it).
The good news with this is that apparently Google have been known to use it as a recruitment tool, so fingers crossed! But even if that doesn’t pan out, I can still use it to highlight my skills to other potential employers.
That’s a pretty condensed version of the last 6 months, and I will do my best to post / interact more than I have done - even if it’s nothing to do with writing. I know I’ve not been much of a friend lately, and I’m sorry for that.
If anyone’s interested, I’ve got a nascent developer blog / portfolio website that I’ve set up to chart my coding journey (and hopefully showcase my skills). You can reach it here.
And no, @themerrywriterreturns, @adie-dee, @bexminx, @stephrawlingwrites and @aeschknight!, I haven’t forgotten I owe you each a piece of art. You will get them!

FIND THE WORD TAG
Thank you @fdehbiwrites for tagging me! 💗 (I did it five centuries later but it’s alright xD)
tension
Something else that helped the Isior release the tension of the day was water. Under its surface they felt safe and calm, like infants in amniotic liquid. They could hold their breath approximatelly for half an hour while immersed. Watching them fly close to lakes, rivers and the sea and then dissapear in them for so long humans had mistaken them for water deities in the previous centuries.
pale
A man blocked Athos way. “And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him”
“And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth,” Athos continued in the loud, merry tone of a preacher. This shocked the mortal, who stared at him blankly. Athos turned to Raphael. “You are right, those people are so much fun!“
sun
“But I looked at the sun,” she heard a child, a little boy, saying.
“You are lying!” said another boy. “Mum said that if you look at it you will go blind!”
“Maybe if it’s your first time looking at it it doesn’t harm you,” guessed a little girl.
“This is not possible!“ said the first one. “It’s a huge ball of fire in the sky!“
“To be honest, I expected it to be more impressive,“ added the other boy.
“Yes, I wanted it to seem bigger!“ exclaimed the girl. “And where was the fire? I saw none of it!“
wind
I couln’t find something non spoilery for this, sorry :/
nature
“Mother, please!“ Manik exclaimed. “Had a Niruvei dared to appear here you would chop him to pieces!“ Her father’s statement wasn’t far from the truth. Despite her old age, handling weapons was like a second nature for her grandmother.

Tagging: I have some new followers and I would like to interact with them! So, I am tagging @g0thgirlcliquex , @acutorfantasia , @somethingwriterly @would-be-trickster and @hell-yeah-fantasy ! 💗 Also @aeschknight cause I haven’t tagged you in a while!

Rules: Post the last sentence you wrote (fanfic/original/anything!) and tag as many people as there are words in the sentence!
I was tagged by @antique-symbolism! Thank you for tagging me and so sorry it took me a while to complete this.
Iara didn’t know what she expected as a reasonable response to such a statement, and perhaps there were certainly a plethora of ways in which Iara could have phrased such a statement so that it didn’t sound as suspicious, but she certainly didn’t expect to be shoved up against the wall, by a woman who appeared human but certainly did not smell or exude human strength, holding a knife to her neck.
I shall tag: @cassandra-yannu-writes, @arwallace, @sarmarble, @the-midwrite-oil, @merielleswriting, @aeschknight, @allyn-racki and anyone who would like to take part. As usual, there is no need to do the tag if you don’t want to.

Yes, I know I’ve been away licking my wounds for a few weeks, and just generally struggling over much of the last year (or few years, tbh), but I figured that if I keep putting it off I’ll never do either of them, so why not do them this year while I’m not working?
Inktober will make planning for NaNo a tiny bit more complicated for me - especially as I’m (currently) going to work on a brand new WIP rather than one of my existing ones. I’m taking the view that it *should* be easier to adopt the “it’s just a first draft” attitude with something that I don’t have a huge amount of time already invested in. Plus, it’s also kind of relevant to the current climate here in the UK.
Anyway, if you’d like to be tagged in either my Inktober and / or NaNo posts, please let me know. I’m tagging a few of you here just to get the ball rolling (and for some self-accountability) but if any of you want off the list, let me know.
