It’s Dear Santa time again!
Every year since 2010, I have spent the month of December posting children's Dear Santa letters.
Publishing letters to Santa in the newspaper first became widely popular in the late-1890s, though scattered newspapers did so as early as the mid-1880s. I believe this sudden explosion in popularity was at least partially the result of the famed "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Clause" editorial which was published in The New York Sun in September of 1897.
In large cities Dear Santa letters often acted as a method of getting needed clothing and supplies to impoverished children when parents might be ashamed to ask for charity. Subscribers to the newspaper could choose a child’s letter and provide the items they asked for. The most common requests were shoes and coats.
Sometimes newspapers offered prizes for the best letter (which I suspect often acted as another clandestine form of charity as the winners were often letters asking for basic clothing and school supplies.) Though these prizes could range from the ordinary (a sled or a doll) to the extravagant (a $20 gold piece or a live pony.)
Often local stores would enter children in a drawing if they mentioned the store in their letter - which on occasion would result in children hilariously name-dropping every store in town just in case.
Writing Dear Santa letters was also commonly an activity done at school, often following some rough form letter. These letters are fairly easy to spot as they often hype up what a good student the child was and include effusive praise for their teacher (who would likely see the letter before it was sent.)
So why have I spent hundreds of hours of my life over the last decade reading tens of thousands of these letters?
Children's voices are largely absent from the historical record.
Dear Santa letters offer an extremely rare opportunity to see history unfold through children's eyes - in their own (often creatively spelled) words.
1914′s “Remember the children in Belgium” becomes 1918′s “Please visit my brother in France”.
During the Great Depression the very common phrase “I know you’re poor this year too Santa” gives a glimpse into parents' attempts to explain to their children why they might not be getting as much this year.
1939′s “Be careful flying over Europe” becomes 1945′s “Since the war is over you’re making bb-guns again right?”
Requests for toy flying machines become aeroplanes become fighter jets become space shuttles.
Dolls and wagons become Shirley Temple merchandise become Erector Sets become Barbies and Star Wars action figures.
But through all these changes one thing remains clear throughout 130+ years of letters to Santa, despite the rapidly changing world around them - children have always been children.
I hope you enjoy these letters as much as I do! (All decade+ of posts are tagged “Dear Santa” if you’d like to see more than just this year’s selection.)

Not exactly our usual post this one. If you have come here hoping for some more stories of the cock up's we have made. Or a review of a funfair manufacturer. Then I can only apologise. The only connection we have with the star of this post, is that we are now based in Yorkshire. Oh, and I have a pilots licence, though not for rotary craft (helicopters). Most of us drive. Some of us quite a lot. A split second mistake could be disastrous, leaving any of us with serious injuries, possibly life threatening. At times like that we are quite likely to need these guys. So letting everyone know about them is always worthwhile. History Of The Air Ambulance The first air ambulance service started in 1933. With a flight from Wideford Airport in Orkney. A night time flight was made from the same location in February 1939 using car headlights to help during the take off and landing. The aircraft, registration G-ACEW was a General Aircraft Monospar. This was a fixed wing aircraft (think aeroplane) rather than the more common helicopters you see today. Both types of aircraft have their advantages. Fixed wing tend to be faster and have a longer range. Heli's the ability to land in small spaces such as on a minor road, or in an industrial estate. Emergency Air Ambulances Generally the modern service is based on helicopters. These are used to respond to medical emergencies in support of land based ambulances. Nearly all of them are charity funded. With the charities either owning the aircraft directly, or contracting in private service providers. The staff are usually seconded from the NHS and local ambulance services. There are a surprising number of Air services around the UK covering most of the country. Yorkshire Our local service was established in October 2000. Currently they operate two Airbus H145 aircraft. Like most of the services they are reliant solely on the donations of individuals and organisations. Originally developed between Airbus and Kawasaki Heavy Industries. The craft is basically the front end of Eurocopters EC135 and the rear of a BK117 C1 helicopter. A previous joint production between the two companies. Nostell Priory Base The charity was originally based in Nostell Priory, an estate in Yorkshire that was purchased by the Winn family in 1654. A family that originally made its fortune in the textile trade in London during Tudor times. The first active heli, was based at Leeds/Bradford airport, where overnight maintenance facilities allowed a high state of readiness. A new operations centre was built and became operational at Nostell in 2013, including a hanger and aircrew accommodation and the aircraft moved to that base. A second aircraft and base was opened in Sheffield in 2007, but closed a year later. With the aircraft being rebased first at Bagby in Thirsk, then eventually sharing a base at RAF Topcliffe with the 645 Gliding Squadron. There are landing pads for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance at most of the major regional hospitals including Leeds, Hull and Middlesbrough allowing high speed patient delivery straight to casualty. Photo Copyright of Wehha licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported license. Richard Hammond One of the services most high profile cases was the high speed crash suffered by Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond at Elvington airfield. Hammond was driving a jet powered drag car called Vampire, powered by a Bristol-Siddeley Orpheus turbojet engine, when he crashed at 319 MPH. He was airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary by the aircrew and spent five weeks recovering, including two weeks in a severe coma. The Yorkshire Air Ambulance relies entirely on charity donations. head over to their website and check out some of the merchandise on sale to support their operations. For a moment, Miles glanced over at her with an expressionless face. "Is that what people say?" He asked with genuine curiosity. The look was soon replaced with a lopsided grin, returning his attention to the cart before him. "They'd be missing out if they didn't want you." His tone reassuring. "You wanna take it for a spin? I'd offer it as your new carriage but I don't believe all this merchandise will fit. Also, driving–it's a lot more difficult than it appears, actually. Statistically speaking, it's nearly a hundred times more difficult than landing an aeroplane." The facts weren't meant as anything other than Miles' train of thought being voiced aloud. And a distraction to the task at hand. "No no, not to worry. I've got this entirely under control. But hey, do I look like I'm having that rough of a time?" Perhaps he had been slacking on his workouts during his grieving. "Really?" Everything about him softened at the mention of her daughter. A grin already finding its way to root onto his lips. "Separation anxiety, and all that. Just goes to show you can never replace a mother's love." And he meant that, despite he and his mother's rocky relationship. "Yeah? What thrillers are you reading these days?"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“I don’t do donations. Move it along.” Malia teased, trying to go with a stern sounding voice and ended up giggling instead. Must be nice to be Miles. No car, no problem. They’ll send him one. “Don’t take this the wrong way, but I hate you. Can a girl get the same type of treatment? Dannmmm…” She shook her head, “Good to know they take care of their star driver though. I should probably switch careers. Need me a company to send me free cars. Think they’re in the market for a 38 year old single mom? I could do CPR…” She said jokingly. As they walked, she noticed Miles seemed to be struggling a bit with the heavy cart, despite trying to hide it. She kind of felt bad for asking him to help now. “Want me to take over for a bit? I didn’t realize how heavy it was.” It wouldn’t do any of them good for him to hurt himself. “Same old, same old. On the grind… Did I tell you Lei just started preschool? That’s been an adjustment…. She bawled her eyes out the first few days but she loves it now.” Malia did the same. But that was going to her grave with her. “Apart from that, there’s not much happening in my life. Unless you count binge-reading thrillers after Leilani goes to bed.”

Thanks for the tag @rockanrolljunkie , very interesting questions!
1. What is the first song you remember hearing?
I don’t have any cool stories but it’s probably one of the numerous children DVDs I’ve watched for like developmental learning my parents used to show me when I was younger.  Disney Learning Adventures or something like that.
2. What is the first band you got into?
Rick Springfield and I know he isn’t really a band but he was the first artist I really latched onto aside from my mother’s influence.  However, I suppose it was partially her fault since I first saw him live after Night Ranger had opened up for him I think in the summer of 2015.  I didn’t want to stay anymore but then once we were leaving I remember hearing Jessie’s Girl and for the rest of the night I couldn’t stop singing that verse and well, the rest is history.
3. Do you collect music on any physical format?
Haha, yes, I often make many bad financial decisions due to this.  Well, my mother is also a very big collector and lately I’ve been collecting many used CDs that I’m able to find and vinyls from Mercari.  I like both CDs and vinyl but I got to admit vinyl is slightly cooler just because seeing that large disc spinning and hearing that slightly tinged sound knowing that somebody maybe half a century ago was listening to this same disc never fails to shake me.
4. What is your favourite piece of music-related memorabilia/merchandise?
I’ve accumulated a large amount of Burrn magazines from the 80s and 90s but my favorites have got to be the 1985 Ritchie Blackmore one:
Tumblr media
I also have a large Nelson poster across my bed which is a great conversation piece:
Tumblr media
5. What is your favourite concert you've been to?
I really enjoyed the Rick Springfield concert I went to in the summer of 2019 at a fair.  It was actually accompanied by an orchestra and I remember time going by so fast.  Something funny though is that there was a pretty large seating area and everyone was standing except my small section which for some reason refused to stand.  When I tried to get up I felt the glare of somebody behind me but besides that it was a great concert!
6. If you could see one artist (or band) who is no longer alive in concert, who would it be?
Damn, that’s really hard.  Technically DP and Rainbow are still playing today but I’d absolutely love to see Mark 4 of Rainbow live, I’d do almost anything to go to that Monsters of Rock show in 1980.  Just to see Cozy play with Ritchie, Graham, Don, and Roger, that would be something truly magical.
7. Have you met any musicians?
Mostly through my mom but I’ve met Night Ranger and I remember once even at an airport which was pretty surprising.  I’ve also met Firehouse which is another one of my mother’s favorite bands but they’re all really talented and humble people.  I’ve also met Rick Springfield which was...very nerve-racking for me.  I remember looking forward to that all of 8th grade...ha good times.  My mom actually was on the same plane as Chris Impellitterri but didn’t want to go up to him because she didn’t know him too well.  She also met the Queensryche guys and Daryl Hall so if anything you know, my mom has been places.
8. What is your go-to song/album when feeling sad?
I like listening to happy music when I’m sad actually but often times I find myself listening to After the Rain by Nelson.  This past year when I was in a bad mood or whatever I would put on In the Aeroplane Over the Sea which, I know, is a interesting choice to say the least, it’s really good at either releasing the tension or creating more.
9. What is your go-to song/album when feeling happy?
I mean, Down to Earth and Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow come to mind.  I also have been listening to a lot of Come Taste the Band and Private Eyes by Tommy Bolin as well as Because They Can by Nelson.
10. What is one music-related documentary you love?
I’ve watched lots of DP and Rainbow documentaries but I really adore the one aired on BBC and was part of the Rock Family Trees series.  It has lots of great interviews with Jon Lord and David as well as some Cozy segments talking about the Rainbow period.  I cited it a lot while writing my research paper too.
11. What is one concert DVD that you love?
I’m not sure about concert DVDs per-say however my favorite filmed concert would have to be either Deep Purple at California Jam 1974 or Operation Live Crime with the concerts in Madison Wisconsin.  The former because it’s an iconic moment in all of rock and roll history and David and Glenn just kill it and the latter because the band just sounds phenomenal and I wanna know if anybody here in Madison, Wisconsin believes in love?
Well I don’t....
12. Do you prefer listening to playlists or full albums?
Before I listened to playlists but lately I haven’t touched them.  I usually listen to albums, they’re kind of already like playlists except created by the artist lol.  If I don’t like certain parts or are in a hurry then I don’t mind skipping.
13. Do you tend to listen to albums in order or on shuffle?
In order, shuffling can be fun though like one time I shuffled Machine Head to pick my future wedding song and Space Truckin’ came on so I guess that’s going to happen.
14. What is your favourite deep cut song by your favourite artist?
I have several favorite artists but starting with Deep Purple, songs such as Blind, Chasing Shadows, The Gypsy, Love Child, Mad Dog, and all of Who Do We Think We Are besides Woman From Tokyo come to mind.  Then for Rainbow I think Self Portrait, Makin’ Love, and Midtown Tunnel Vision are just phenomenal.  For Nelson I really enjoy Nobody Wins In the End which is the final song on their second album and Written In Rock by Rick Springfield is probably my favorite song from his.
15. What is your favorite CD/vinyl/cassette that you own in terms of packaging?
I really enjoy the No Bad Habits vinyl that I own from Graham Bonnet just because I think the cover is gorgeous and the blue suede suit just fits him perfectly.  It always sits in front of my vinyls lol.
I’d like to tag @whodoesntlikewho , @houseofaffuso , @ritchieblackless ,  @high-way-star , @inthemidnightmeme , and @vibesfromepicforest and anyone else who wants to do it!

This is my 12th year posting Dear Santa letters on tumblr.
Over the last decade+ I have read more letters than I could ever count. This year alone I probably spent 50+ hours and read well over a thousand letters just to find the 50 or so I’m posting.
Publishing letters to Santa in the newspaper first became popular in the mid-1890s.
In large cities Dear Santa letters often acted as a method of getting needed clothing and supplies to impoverished children when parents might be ashamed to ask for charity. Subscribers to the newspaper could chose a child’s letter and provide the items they asked for.
Many local stores would enter children in a drawing if they mentioned the store in their letter - which on occasion would result in children hilariously name-dropping every store in town just in case.
Writing Dear Santa letters was commonly an activity done at school, often following some rough form letter. These letters are fairly easy to spot due as they often hype up what a good student the child was and include effusive praise for their teacher (who would likely see the letter before it was sent.)
Through Dear Santa letters you can see how Christmas traditions vary and evolve from place to place. Some places the presents go under the tree, others on it. Some place Santa brings the tree himself and sets it up.
Stockings were hung over the fireplace, or on the doorknob, or at the end of the bed, or by the kitchen stove.
In the Deep South fireworks are were the stocking-stuffer of choice, while fresh fruit, nuts and candy were popular everywhere.
The traditional milk & cookies left for Santa didn’t become popular until the 1930s, though that was hardly the beginning of leaving Santa something to eat. Popular choices prior to the 1930s included cake, donuts, “lunch” (it’s always lunch for some reason, never dinner), and “just help yourself to whatever’s in the kitchen.”
Dear Santa letters offer a rare chance to see history unfold through the eyes of children - often in their own creatively spelled words.
1914′s “Remember the children in Belgium” becomes 1918′s “Please visit my brother in France”.
During the Great Depression the very commonly seen phrase “I know you’re poor this year too Santa” gives a glimpse into parents attempts to explain to their children why they might not be getting as much this year.
1939′s “Be careful flying over Europe” becomes 1945′s “Since the war is over you’re making bb-guns again right?”
Requests for toy flying machines become aeroplanes become fighter jets become space shuttles.
Dolls and wagons become Shirley Temple merchandise and Erector Sets become Barbies and Star Wars action figures.
But despite all these changes one thing remains clear throughout 130+ years of letters to Santa - despite the rapidly changing world around them - children have always been children.
I hope you enjoy these letters as much as I do! (All twelve years of posts are tagged “Dear Santa” if you’d like to see more than just this year’s selection.)

Look at the effects work in the Star Wars films, Blade Runner, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, T2: Judgment Day, Aliens, Ghostbusters, The Abyss, and Jurassic Park — all of those Official Dallas Cowboys Haters Shirt hoodie, Sweater  released in the 80s or first half of the 1990s, and all had incredible visual effects that more than prove there was a capability to portray impossible things in totally life-like ways in film. Heck, 2001: A Space Odyssey had spectacular realistic effects and those were created way back in 1965-66 (the film didn’t release until 1968, but most of the visual effects work was done in 65-66). So for a lot of superhero films, it wouldn’t necessarily have been that hard to portray with the effects of the 80s and 90s.

In 1919, Detroit, Michigan, was the single most successful industrial city in the world. World War I had ended, and Detroit had played a significant part in the Allies’ victory, supplying them with tanks and trucks and aeroplanes. Now, with the threat of the Hun over, the automobile plants once again turned their energies to retooling for motorcars. Soon, four thousand automobiles a day were being manufactured, assembled and shipped. Skilled and unskilled labor came from all parts of the world to seek jobs in the automotive industry. Italians, Irish, Germans – they came in a flood tide. Among the new arrivals were Paul Templarhaus and his bride, Frieda. Paul had been a butcher’s apprentice in Munich. With the dowry he received when he married Frieda, he emigrated to New York and opened a Official Dallas Cowboys Haters Shirt hoodie, Sweater shop, which quickly showed a deficit. He then moved to St. Louis, Boston and, finally, Detroit, failing spectacularly in each city. In an era when business was booming and an increasing affluence meant a growing demand for meat, Paul Templarhaus managed to lose money everywhere he opened a shop. He was a good butcher but a hopelessly incompetent businessman. In truth he was more interested in writing poetry than in making money. He would spend hours dreaming up rhymes and poetic images. He would set them down on paper and mail them off to newspapers and magazines, but they never bought any of his masterpieces. To Paul, money was unimportant. He extended credit to everyone, and the word quickly spread: if you had no money and wanted the finest of meats, go to Paul Templarhaus.

Flight Tracking System Market Analysis, Growth by Top Companies, Trends by Application, Forecast 2016 – 2026
In a new report titled “Flight Tracking System Market: Global Industry Analysis and Opportunity Assessment, 2016-2026,” the expert analysts at Future Market Insights have observed that the Standards and Recommended Practices mandate establishes that aircraft are to be tracked at a time interval of 15 minutes whenever air traffic services obtain an aircraft’s position information at greater than 15-minute intervals for aeroplanes with a seating capacity greater than 19. Some of the modern aircraft are already equipped with the technology, while some of them require equipment up gradation, like software installation and equipment configuration as per the satellite provider. The estimated market size includes such costs and excludes the overall cost of equipment under such eccentrics. The report further highlights that for each of the above systems, the components installed in aircraft are only assessed during market estimation and forecast of the global flight tracking system market. The market size will only include the equipment or software cost and let off the installation cost and service cost.
Portable aircraft tracking systems, as well as other technologies and data that can be repurposed to facilitate aircraft tracking, are assessed across each aircraft types used for general aviation, civil aviation and military purposes. Portable flight tracking equipment not complying with government regulations and used for inflight tracking is also taken into consideration during market estimation. Pricing information collected through various primary and secondary sources is used in a weighted average model to arrive at the market size (in US$ Mn). Weighted average model is primarily based on each system type across each aircraft.
Production and sales of aircraft for general and civil aviation and military purposes has been tracked and assessed across various regions and countries
While collecting data to estimate the market value of the global flight tracking system market, we found that the mandate for real-time flight tracking is expected to get operational in 2018. However, normal tracking is already in place through several other systems fitted in the aircraft such as ADS-B (Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast), FANS (Future Air Navigation System), Radar-based System and other portable flight tracking equipment. Based on the service (aircraft tracking, weather information, communication) catered to by each of the systems, penetration of these systems is assessed across the aircraft in each country.
Visit For Sample>>https://www.futuremarketinsights.com/reports/sample/rep-gb-610
Average prices (US$/Unit) based on the components installed in the aircraft have been estimated through company brochures, quotations and interviews with industry experts
Necessary equipage of ADS-B, FANS systems in the U.S. and Europe is tracked through the data published on several government resources such as the U.S. Department of Transportation, International Civil Aviation Organization and General Aviation Manufacturers Association

Our unique research assumptions
The system components installed in aircraft are considered during market sizing. System components installed at ground stations, ATC (Air Traffic Control units), and VHF (Very High Frequency) stations are not considered. Services offered by third parties for aircraft tracking are not considered during market valuation. The global flight tracking system market estimation for new aircraft is based on the production of aircraft across different regions as most of the newly produced aircraft are already equipped with such systems. Most of the aircraft flying in oceanic or remote areas are already equipped with the hardware needed for tracking and hence these have been excluded during market estimation. These aircraft only need to be configured in order to obtain necessary aircraft information.

The Best and Worst Loyalty Programs in Canada
Do you want to know what are the best and worst loyalty programs in Canada are? Loyalty programs are all the rage these days. Just about every retailer seems to have one. It makes sense, by offering your customers something, they’ll hopefully stay loyal to the brand and spend more. Despite the fact that you may be giving up some of your data, I see loyalty programs as a good thing as it usually means you’ll get rewards and/or discounts.
Tumblr media
There’s just one problem with loyalty programs. Not all of them are created equal. While some offer incredible value, others are terrible and not worth your time. Not only do you need to think about how you’ll earn points, but also how you’ll be able to spend them. Here are my picks for the best and worst loyalty programs for Canadians.
Best – PC Optimum In my opinion, the best loyalty programs are where it’s easy to earn points quickly, and you can redeem your points effortlessly. With PC Optimum, you can earn points at the largest grocery store chain (Loblaws owned stores), the largest pharmacy chain (Shoppers Drug Mart/Pharmaprix), and one of the largest gas station chains in Esso. That’s a pretty good three-pronged attack for points collectors.
Tumblr media
In addition, you can earn even more points if you have one of the PC Mastercards. The PC Financial World Elite Mastercard gives you 45 points per $1 spent at Shoppers Drug Mart/Pharmaprix, 30 points per $1 spent at Loblaws owned stores, and 10 points per $1 spent on all other purchases. If you become a PC Insiders member, you could increase your earn rate on some products.
With PC Optimum, it takes 10,000 points to redeem $10 in groceries or merchandise. However, if you save your points for special redemption events, you can get even more value. For example, Shoppers Drug Mart often has promotions where if you redeem 300,000 points, you’ll get an extra $100 off. Loblaws recently had a similar offer, but it wasn’t as generous.
If you shop at Loblaws owned stores and Shoppers Drug Mart on a regular basis, joining PC Optimum and getting a PC Mastercard is a must.
Worst – Rexall Be Well When Rexall announced that they were dropping Air Miles (also on the worst list), I was very excited. It was clear that PC Optimum was one of the best loyalty programs, so surely Rexall would come up with something better. Why better? Because Rexall has fewer locations than Shoppers Drug Mart, so they need something that could potentially lure customers to them.
Unfortunately, Rexall Be Well is not very good. Although you’ll earn 10 points per $1 spent, it takes 25,000 points to redeem $10. For context, the base earn rate at Shoppers Drug Mart is 15 PC Optimum points per $1 spent. Remember, it only takes 10,000 PC Optimum points to redeem $10. In other words, your earn rate is lower, and it takes more points to make a redemption compared to PC Optimum.
Tumblr media
Yes, Rexall does have many promotions where you can earn additional points, but the rate of return is still nowhere close to what you get with PC Optimum. Plus, Rexall Be Well doesn’t have a credit card where you can earn more points. This really is a missed opportunity.
Best – Aeroplan Aeroplan completely overhauled its program in late 2020 and its grown on me. Admittedly, it now costs more points to fly to just about any destination, but it’s now easier for any travellers to make a redemption. That’s possible because Air Canada now makes every seat available on their planes available for redemptions and there are no more carrier surcharges.
Since TD and American Express have multiple Aeroplan cards, it’s quite easy to rack up a lot of points fast. Add in the fact that you get a Buddy Pass with the mid and top-tier cards, and that’s an easy way to save on flights. In the last year, Aeroplan has also added additional airline and merchant partners so there are more ways to earn and redeem points.
