"lan zhan, lan zhan!" a blur of black robes streaks across the jingshi, fairly hurling itself at lan wangji the moment he crosses the threshold. wei wuxian flings himself into lan zhan's arms, irrespective of any ceremony, and reaches up to kiss him. "i missed you." it's only been two days, but in his defense, two days without his husband is a very long time.
Tumblr media
༺🌕༻ Lan Wangji returned from the most recent hunt not so long ago, having stopped by the main hall to inform his brother and uncle of their success — he left Sizhui and Jingyi to handle the debriefing, knowing them both to be more than capable at this point while he settled back in at home with his things and greeted his no doubt restless husband.
Sure enough, no sooner had he set foot over the threshold he found himself assaulted by a flourish of black, hair and robes filling his field of vision as he teetered precariously on long legs and dropped the rucksack to the ground in order to catch the man by his waist in one arm.
“I’m home,” he barely managed to utter before lips were sealed in a kiss, returning it all-too-willingly with less of a willingness to part for more words. He set Wei Wuxian back on his feet, both hands reaching up to cup his cheeks and bestow another kiss on lips, nose, forehead. I missed you too, these kisses said without needing further explanation.

@aeipathic sent:
“a-xu.” he’s wearing his reading glasses — something he used to do only when actually reading, but has taken to doing at strategic intervals ever since the delightful discovery of one zhou zishu’s interest in them — as he leans over the back of zhou zishu’s chair to reach past him and deposit a package on the table in front of him. the glasses are, let’s call it, the icing on the cake and not the cake itself. a bonus. the point is this, rather: “i got you something.”
the “something” inside the package is a set of new paints, expensive, along with drawing pencils of various thicknesses and canvas paper. the thought hasn’t left his mind since he discovered a-xu’s well-hidden artistic talents; surely, with a little prompting, he can lure them out into the open
Tumblr media
⚍☯⚎ He couldn’t quite pinpoint the moment that Wen Kexing had started wearing those glasses more often, but he got the distinct impression it had something to do with his initial reaction to them. Could it be helped that he’d come home late one night to find his neighbor sitting in his recliner under the reading lamp with a book in hand, those frames perched just-so on the tip of his nose, giving him a studious allure that Zhou Zishu had not anticipated? He had tried to brush it off as a curiosity — have you always been a blind old man, Lao Wen? Is that why you call me a rare beauty? — but the effect could not remain hidden for long; he discovered a notable fondness for the way those glasses fogged between their harried breaths and how Wen Kexing would tear them from his face in irritation for obscuring the satisfied grin on his A-Xu’s lips.
Truly they were quite handsome on him, reflecting the way his eyes flashed and danced with mischief and mirth — with adoration. It made him look in turns mature and boyish, learned and studious. Even when Wen Kexing wore them just to rile him, as he did now, Zhou Zishu could not find it in him to be unaffected.
So when the man leaned over his shoulder to deposit the package and the elder of them caught sight of those frames glinting in the hanging overhead light he felt a little flutter stir in his stomach like a school boy whose teacher crush paid him special attention. Well that was an embarrassing notion…
He tore his eyes away from Wen Kexing’s face to eye the package set just beyond the grip of papers in front of him, a brow lifting as he made quick work of checking dates in his head — had he missed an anniversary of some sort? He hadn’t earned a promotion or made any real strides in his work lately, and it wasn’t his birthday… he reached out and plucked it up, finding it to be of reasonable heft as he gave it a little shake. “What’s this?” The rattle was an obscure jumble of sounds, only serving to peak his curiosity more, moving his work aside to set the package down again and pry open the wrapping.
What met his eye was, perhaps, more surprising than even Wen Kexing’s glasses. Paints. Pencils. Paper. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d had tools like this set before him, fresh and filled with purpose. He supposed it had something to do with the box of old sketch books and paintings his partner had found on helping him clear out his closet to afford Chengling more space in his bedroom. When asked why the other had never seen him exercising his talents, Zhou Zishu had given the excuse that all of his supplies had dried up or been lost over time.
In truth, he’d felt the creative drive had been sapped from his life when she left; he hadn’t bothered picking up a brush since. He’d thrown away the paints, broken a pencil or two in his frustration, or used them for work, and the only thing that had kept him from shit-canning the box of drawings and paintings was the fact that they were buried behind stacks of files and papers and junk too thick for him to bother with.
His fingers skimmed over the paints, the metal tubes firm and crisp in their newness, The pencils were sharp. He could smell the woodyness of the textured paper. He was speechless for what felt like too long before he turned his gaze up to the other, meeting his gaze through those glasses, and for a moment he did not see the shapely lenses at all. Only the depth of those eyes. Those beautiful, maddening, ever-watchful eyes that seemed to peer into the very soul of him, knowing the truth of what lay there hidden; the boxes he tried to keep buried. The expression on his own face was complex, but not ungrateful.
But words of gratitude came with difficulty at first, as they always had, shielded behind flat humor.
“If you think I’m going to paint a portrait of you in those ridiculous glasses then you’re definitely not as smart as they make you look.” And I’m not as good a liar as I like to think I am… ⚍☯⚎

@aeipathic asked: “ by all means, explain.” seteth @ sylvain >:)
There happened to be a moment in which Sylvain found himself in the library, actually perusing for a book he fully intended to read in the comfort of his own bedroom, where Sylvain and Flayn happened to be alone. In the library. Not together, not even talking, truth be told, he didn’t even know she was there until he heard a yelp and the scuttering of feet.
A sidelong glance toward the entrance, a long sigh before he turned back to the bookshelf, ruminating a bit more over the titles, running his fingers along the spine of them before finally making a decision. Grabbing two books, Sylvain tucked them under his right arm, sliding a his free hand into his pocket before turning on a heel and making his way into the hallway.
As he rounded the corner, Sylvain was stopped abruptly.
Tumblr media
“Oh, Seteth - !” He looked at the other, he supposed should’ve expected this. Should’ve expected being stopped by the elder man, all but red in the face as he stopped Sylvain in the hall outside his office. He tilted his head, an easy going smile on his face despite the agitation he felt at the hold up - there was a curfew, you know.
“I was just in the library, didn’t think a bit of light reading before going to sleep would hurt.” He grabbed the books from under his arm, displaying only the cover of the first one. It was a bit of fiction, a romantic novel if you will - one that was expected of someone like Sylvain to be carrying around. Not that he’d ever actually read it, it would lay there, discarded on his desk, until he finished the book he actually intended to read, and then return them both. No one would be any wiser and he could be left alone with the book he actually intended to read.
If everyone assumed he was a fool who read romance novels in hopes of making some girls swoon - then that was on them.
“Is everything alright?”

@aeipathic asked   :    if you haven't gotten it yet: 003 | for xie lian!   -   SEND ME A FANDOM/SHIP/CHARACTER (accepting i will reblog this in the morning dON’T TEST ME)
003 | Give me a character & I will tell you:
How I feel about this character:          Best. Boy. I think pretty much from the second I met him to now, like, 5 months later, I haven’t stopped sobbing about him, and quite honestly...I don’t think I ever will? I too, would be in love with this man for 800 years. In fact, I too have been in love with this man since the three seconds his mask fell off in flashback to the parade in the donghua. So quite honestly, I think Hua Cheng’s valid. Which is awkward because I also...feel like the way I understand Xie Lian is so...weirdly personal to me. I get into specifics in my Very Emotionally Charged headcanons but like...it really is that spirit of never giving up, of getting hurt over and over and still having the courage to be brave, be kind, bare your heart, of having the courage to believe in other people, believe that ultimately in the end it’s all worth it. I relate to a lot of his insecurities and fears and flaws and I just think it’s beautiful that he manages to be such a beautiful person in spite of all of his difficulties. He gives me hope.
Any/all the people I ship romantically with this character:          Hua Cheng at the top of this list because 1) I’m basic 2) he’d murder me in my sleep if I didn’t 3) they’re just...genuinely so good for each other. They know each other in their entirety, they understand, and they are so brave for each other. Like, I’m not gonna write you a thousand word essay on the spot but I could. Just know that I could. I’m also fond of the idea of the Xianle Trio as an OT3 but also fond of the idea of every leg of that ot3. I haven’t really thought In Depth about it but like...I think it’d be fun. There’s a lot of delicious things to work with there what with The Past and everything that happened in it. So there’s that.  Honestly I’m like...still exploring tbh. My time in this fandom has been pretty recent (tm) but like...genuinely, on the rpc end of this, I’m open to shipping so long as it’s not weird stuff. I Can Be Convinced. I do think, however, that Xie Lian is one of those muses I have that just...like I Currently Cannot See Being Into a Woman? So, until he like...tries to tell me otherwise, we’re calling him Tentatively Gay.
My favorite non-romantic relationship for this character:     Xianle Trio x 2, I’m counting it for romantic and non-romantic shhh. It’s so complicated and there’s so much shared history and pain and little snags of conflict but also prevailing care that is just...chef’s kiss. But also whatever fucked up shit relationship Xie Lian’s got going on w/ Junwu? I’m here for that. The “older brother figure/super-supportive friend turns out actually to be your sleep paralysis demon that ruined your life” dynamic....I have brain-rot, it’s fine. They’re also just...so similar, and so different in such distinct ways and it’s so interesting.  Oh!! And the kids!! Ban Yue and Pei Xiu and Guzi and Quan Yizhen a tiny bit shh don’t come at me I think of Him As a Fluffy Child!!! I just really love that this disaster man has sort of just, collected a little gang of random children that are His Kids now that he tries to feed Semi-Decent Food to.
My unpopular opinion about this character:     I Don’t Know What the Popular/Unpopular Opinions...are? Honestly, I feel like there are parts of him that are uglier and rawer and more jagged than people necessarily like to think about or portray. And I get it, because he’s Very Good, and it touches and shakes me how good he is - but it is also Such an Effort to be that good. He doesn’t give himself enough credit and I think...brushing it all away with “He’s Just That Good” feels a little bit like we’re not giving him enough credit...too? I do think that it’s important for he himself to acknowledge that struggling with choosing goodness and kindness is normal and does not mean that You Are a Bad Person, and so I would like to see it acknowledged more in our perceptions of him?
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon:     I’m gonna be honest...I think T.GCF is up there in terms of books I thought were Pretty Flawless As They Were. It hit all the right spots at all the right times. I don’t think any book is truly perfect but I think this was...pretty damn close. So...there’s not a lot to say here? I do wish he had More Than One Mental Breakdown in present timeline (that is to say, the kinda thing he did in Qi Rong’s cave when he was telling Hua Cheng about how it was better that no one knew the truth about Fangxin Guoshi), because I think moments of truth for characters are incredibly insightful. Oh, I guess adding onto that - I don’t think it needs to be in the book because the book was paced pretty beautifully, but I Do Wish We’d Gotten More of the 800 year block between 2nd and 3rd ascension. I just want to know the nitty gritty details of what he got up to beyond what I already have.
Favorite friendship for this character:     I can’t answer Xianle Trio for 3 different questions so Favorite Friendship Award goes to the lovely Lady Windmaster Shi Qingxuan, who is Too Gorgeous and Generous and Lovely not to end up on this list at least once. Blows kiss.
My crossover ship:     You know I have a lot of crossover friendships / found-family relations specifically in the M.DZS / my other xianxia fandoms sector, which is great, chef’s kiss. But surprisingly? I don’t have any ship ships. Which is very strange for me given I crossover....like, everything. So? I don’t know. RPC friends...I’m here to explore the possibilities like...hmu...

She laughs, but it’s a hollow sound, a far cry from how it used to sound— like the jingling of little bells or the sweet sound of chimes blowing in the wind. Her smile, too, is dim, as if all the light has been sucked from her being and nothing but a flickering flame remained, dangerously close to being snuffed out at any moment.
“Sometimes the choice is made for us. Sometimes there’s no pieces left to pick up when everything is said and done. Everything blows away but the shell that’s left.”
Qingxuan sits up after a beat, waving off her own words with a plastered on smile, one more like her smiles of the past only this one doesn’t meet her eyes. “Anyway, how’s Xie Lian?”

Xie Lian’s gut twisted with guilt and a deep sense of shame as he stared down at the white toes of his boots. He scuffed one back and forth across the coarse dirt of the cave the two found themselves trapped in. He didn’t want to have this conversation. He didn’t want to have it now, not when the both of them were sure to overly emotional and most likely say something that they would deeply regret later on. He hoped Feng Xin would find a way to dig them out of the cave in and spare them both from the current tide of painful memories from Xie Lian’s most disgraced period of his life. The way things were going, however, that prospect seemed less and less likely.
“I didn’t-” Xie Lian started to say, his voice croaking on the words. He paused to lick his lips, both to wet the dryness of them and to stall for time, and to clear his throat.
Speaking after that seemed almost impossible and the god worked his jaw as he struggled to find the words to express what the true depths of his feelings were on the subject of Mu Qing’s initial break from their group all those centuries ago. Finally, Xie Lian uttered a soft sigh and dropped his head back to rest against the stone wall of the cave.
“I wanted a lot of things back then, Mu Qing,” he finally said in a soft, infinitely sad voice. “I’m not proud of many of the things I said or did back then. And I wish I could take many of them back.” Xie Lian looked to the side to piece out Mu Qing’s profile in the dark gloom of the cave. “...I didn’t mean to hurt you, Mu Qing. I didn’t mean to hurt any of you. But... you’re right.” Xie Lian laughed then, humorless, and filled with bitterness. “You’ve always been right. I was hurting and I wanted all of you to hurt with me. At least initially.”
He drew his knees up and wrapped his arms around them to hug tight. “But deep down I was ashamed...” Xie Lian’s voice had dropped to a remorseful whisper. “That I let you all down. That I wasn’t strong enough or clever enough to save everyone-- to keep everyone safe and happy. I was angry at myself for that and I took it out on you all. And that wasn’t fair of me...”
He hadn’t wanted anyone to know about these dirty, flawed parts of him. He didn’t want anyone to know about the feelings he had regarding the initial time after his first banishment. But Mu Qing had a way of getting under a person’s defenses and ripping them down and exposing all their soft, vulnerable parts to the open. And Xie Lian didn’t like being vulnerable. He liked stability and safety. This conversation had none of those things.

xiang tensed, grimacing as she was not sure how to react to the boys sudden actions of affection as slender arms suddenly were tightly wrapped around her own figure.  “ what are you doing ? ” her voice sharp as she tried to fight of chengling from where she stood. pushing the boy away, though not harshly. somehow she came to care for this child on the other hand she is also still wary of him. it was an odd relationship all four of them had. like a family, but a very unfunctional family that worked just fine in the most unpredictable situations.
Tumblr media
“ don’t hug me again or i will cut of your hands when you sleep! “ a’xiang threathened, however, did not mean it. it was empty words, however,  her behaviour often very cold and distant but straight up bold and threatening  a self protecting behaviour she had adapted during her years growing up besides wen kexing.

@aeipathic hit the ♡ for a starter!
Tumblr media
⚍☯⚎ He sat languid like a cat in the seat in his chambers, one leg slung over the armrest with a lackadaisical demeanor, the silver chimes hanging from dark leather boots jingling with a soft, whimsical echo in the dim-lit room as he wagged his ankle in idle rhythm. In one hand he held a plum, the skin velvet dark and the inner flesh glistening where it had been pierced by sharp teeth. It drifted now and again to his lips where he would bite, tongue lapping the sweetness from his skin as the deep mahogany of his one good eye trailed up and down the slip of paper in his free hand.
A knock on the door caused the jingling of his boot to stop, his gaze drifting toward the sound and knowing before speaking who stood on the other side. He’d sent for him after all.
“Come in,” he called out, finishing one last bite of the fruit before letting the pit roll off his fingertips into the burnished tray beside his seat. He did not show his guest any particular deference, instead sucking on the tip of his thumb and then his forefinger before with a deep sigh he would fold the slip of paper nimbly into fours and fling it with arrow-like precision toward the masked man who entered and no doubt awaited the reason he’d been summoned.
“Your friend,” he spoke at last, resting his cheek on the backs of his knuckles, the quiet jingling resuming as he watched Yin Yu with subtle interest. “The one who was banished after you,” he paused, more for effect than anything — Yin Yu would know quite well of whom he spoke; it had been a matter of topic for some time now.
A slow smile crept over lips, a flash of satisfaction lighting that piercing gaze, “I may have found his whereabouts.”⚍☯⚎

Little idiot.
He had one foot out the door already when Chenling’s voice broke through the sounds of those seated around him. His entire body froze, mind moving rapidly in an attempt to come up with some plausible reason for leaving him behind at the inn. “You haven’t eaten, and I need to run a few errands. If you don’t eat, A-Xu will make that face he makes when he is disappointed in me, and I cannot have that.”
Truth be told, he’d become aware of someone following them shortly after they entered the village, though he hadn’t been certain until he took the round-about way down several alleys (telling Chenling that he was certain he’d seen an old friend he wanted to say hello to).  After the second twisting turn and the two men were still behind them, he knew whoever it was had ill intentions.
And he wasn’t going to see Chenling hurt because of a misdeed from his past that was likely about to catch up to him. “You know I don’t like to wait. You order food, get some tea too, and I’ll go buy the vegetables for dinner. We will get home before sundown that way.” Eyes tracked back toward the front, where, sure enough, the two men were attempting to nonchalantly blend in with the crowd prowling through the vendor stalls. “If we’re late getting home, you are cooking.” It was meant as a threat, hopefully a deterrent to any more questions. “And that includes catching the chicken.”
