Challenge: Monologue for Your Life

High Tide, Driftmark, 10th day of the 8th moon 129 AC

“Rhaenyra, Daemon and all our grandchildren. It is a great pleasure to have you all gathered around the dining table here at High Tide. The Princess Rhaenys and I were talking earlier, and we could not remember the last time you were all joined here at our home.

We are blessed that our grandchildren are frequent visitors, accomplished dragon riders and hard-working sailors. Even the younger princes and princesses are showing promising signs. I know The Princess Rhaenys is excited to take them flying and I am looking forward to teaching them the ways of Salt and Sea.

Speaking of Salt and Sea. The Princess Rhaenys and I are fully aware that the news we are about to share with you all, might cause some worry. This is not our goal. We are to share happy news.

Rhaenys and I are expecting. Around Winter Solstice the Velaryon family is set to expand with a new member.

And I want to take this chance, with all of us together, to lay to rest any and all worry about the succession of Driftmark. Lucerys is and will always be our chosen heir. As Laenor’s son Driftmark is his. We knew from the moment Rhaenyra and Laenor was to be wed that their firstborn would be the heir to the throne; our pride and joy Jacaerys. And their second born would be our heir. While the loss of Laenor remains painful, it is a joy to witness how Lucerys has grown into his role as heir of Driftmark.

It is our hope and wish that you will join us in the excitement that it is bringing new life into this world. Now that you; our closest family have all been told, we are happy to announce that it won’t remain a secret. I am aware that we, and especially The Princess Rhaenys, have not been as present at court and at The Red Keep as we usually are. This is because of this happy news. First of all, it’s no longer possible for The Princess Rhaenys to conceal her growing womb - which you will bear witness to when she stands and hugs you - Second of all, Meleys has refused to let The Princess Rhaenys ride and finally third of all, The Princess Rhaenys has been dealing with aches and pains, causing her to be bedridden for most hours of the day.

It was not with ill-intend that The Princess Rhaenys didn’t greet you with hugs as you are all accustomed to, it was to conceal the news until we were all gathered.

Now, I would like for you all to raise your glasses.

To Lucerys Velaryon, heir to the Driftwood Throne; may you continue to excel at sailing, may you always make us the proudest grandparents.

To Rhaenyra, to Daemon, I hope this will settle any ill rumours that might brew. This was never our intention.

To Baela and Rhaena, Visenya, Aemma, our beloved granddaughters, it is our hope you will always see Driftmark and High Tide as a second home, that’s always open for you.

To Jacaerys, Lucerys, Joffrey, Aegon, Viserys, Baelon, our beloved grandsons, it’s our hope that you will also always see Driftmark and High Tide as a second home. And it is, my hope in particular that you will allow me to teach you all of Salt and Sea.

And finally, to my wife, your muña, your cousin, your grandmother and all the other more informal titles she holds. Please stand and show off.”

Unlike many girls her age, Jaehaera was learning to wield a sword. This had been one of her greatest desires ever since she saw her brother and cousins training in combat.

They had tried to deny her the opportunity several times, insisting that a princess should not learn to fight. However, with much persistence and well-crafted arguments, Jaehaera managed to convince them to let her train. After all, Visenya, sister of Aegon I, had been a great warrior.

Even now, in King's Landing, Jaehaera continued her training, determined not to fall behind in her skills.

Dressed in armor similar to that of the other students, her long, silver hair was tied in a beautiful braid to keep it from getting in the way during practice.

As she entered the training grounds, she noticed that Aegon was also there. It seemed the two of them would be training together that morning.

"Pair up for practice. Prince Aegon and Princess Jaehaera, you two can team up." Ser Daven Lefford announced.

Jaehaera’s face showed surprise. It would be the first time she would train with a relative other than her brother. Taking a deep breath, the princess hoped not to make any mistakes that would embarrass her in front of her cousin, focusing on everything she had learned up until that day. "Hello, Aegon… I hope you're not disappointed to be practicing with me."

Aegon knew the streets of Flea Bottom like the back of his own hand, which he thought was quite an accomplishment.  The streets and buildings weren’t built in nice lines and rows like the nicer parts of the city.  Instead, they snaked and weaved back in on themselves, buildings having been built wherever they were needed most, which left behind dark alleys and confusing side streets that were easy for a person to get lost in.  Aegon had made his way here to Flea Bottom for a celebratory drink.  His elder sister had assured him he wasn’t being suspected of her poisoning, which meant Aegon could finally relax for the first time in weeks.  Knowing that he wasn’t going to be thrown into a cell or fed to Syrax or Caraxes had brightened his mood considerably.  

He stopped outside his favorite tavern in the area and pulled the hood off his head.  He was well known inside and he had no worries about letting anyone know his identity once he was inside its doors.  As he was about to step in, he felt a person slam into him.  Aegon quickly whirled around, hand flying to his Valyrian steel dagger, gripping it in his hand exactly how Dalton had shown him only a few days before.  Once he saw who had run into him though, Aegon quickly relaxed.  It was a boy who was quite a bit shorter than him, clearly a child.  Not that children couldn’t be viscous little creatures, but even Aegon could defend himself against one.  “It’s alright,” he started, figuring the boy might be nervous if he had recognized he’d run into a prince of the kingdom.  Except as the boy slightly shifted, Aegon caught a glimpse of his face and stared.  “Aegon?  What are you doing here?”  

Rhaenyra surely didn’t know he was here.  In fact, Aegon had a sneaking suspicion his small namesake hadn’t told anyone.  Aegon certainly hadn’t when he’d started to make his trips here around Aeg’s own age.  “This is a lucky coincidence!  I was just longing for a drinking buddy and here you are!  Well, perhaps not drinking but I can teach you how to play dice inside.”  Aegon had started his heavy drinking at Aeg’s age, but as a parent himself, he could acknowledge that probably wasn’t the best habit to instill in children.  “Don’t worry, I think being curious about Flea Bottom is a right of passage for any prince.  I actually brought your brother Lucerys down here the other day, so you’re in his and my wonderful company when it comes to visiting this fine establishment.”  Of course, the tavern before them was anything but nice.  It was certainly fun though, which was the most important thing for a tavern to be.

Daenaera held her father’s hand as she entered King’s Landing. This was the first time, she was young girl, but that all. She remember grabbing her father’s hand tightly as she looked around to see who was there.

The loud noises of the crowd all talking with one another, as the young girl approached the crowd to the front. She saw the royal family, and now Queen sitting on the Iron Throne.

She felt the jitters in her body as she looked excited as she looked up at her father. Standing beside them were all of the rest of her children. Standing all eldest to youngest.

Little Daenaera’s eyes traveled to the slightly smaller boy… someone she assumed was her age. She felt her face blushing. She looked at the Prince Aegon… she thought.

She had never been to King’s Landing, and this being her first made herself extremely excited. As courts proceedings went on, she couldn’t hold in her fidgeting as her father continue to look down at her.

Soon finally as the court proceedings had finally ended, her father had went to introduce her to the rest. She saw Princess Rhaenys and her Uncle Corlys.

Small giggles left her lips as she approached family. Then her father brought her to the royal family… her stood behind her father scared, as she peaked her head slightly to the side.

“Daenaera,” Her father warned as she was forced to come out of her shell. she was outgoing… if she wasn’t in front of the Royals.

She gave a curtsy to the Queen and then to the rest of her family as she looked directly at the Prince Aegon.

She giggled and smiled brightly once more before her father took her back their chambers. “Father! Father! I want to marry Prince Aegon!” She squealed!

“He is so lovely looking! and and and!” She started to run around.

Daemion laughed looking at her daughter, “My little sea angel, we can talk about that when you are older. But for now, you may have a crush,”

A little pout formed on her face, the little girl looking at her father. “I want to marry him now!” she demanded.

Her father looked at her with wide eyes, “If you marry him now, you will have duties to perform,” he warned her.

A gasped left Daenaera’s mouth as she crossed her arms, “I do not like duties, nor do I like attending any of my classes! I do not wish to marry him now then!”

Daemion laughed gently ruffling her daughter’s hair, “Just be patient, and you will meet the right prince, at the right time, sweet Daenaera ,” her told her as he kissed her head.

All I Know So Far

Rhaenyra had always held little patience for talk of favorite children, she was hardly known for her patience in most matters, but when it came the discussion that she held as the prime culprit for so much of the tension and pain hanging between herself and her younger siblings her impatience had long since turned into unbinding disdain. They would never be free of it, she knew the petty whispers and evergreen gossip would haunt this castle as long as there was a royal family inhabiting its walls; who did the new Queen love most? Her first born, the princess she would see him wed, or the one she gave so much of her time? Her tie to the Velaryons, the Prince who inherited her every feature save the color of her eyes, her firstborn daughter, or simply her first with the man she’d loved since he was her first?

She’s already made all those plans for Vis…She intends for Baelon to be The Hand one day…there must be some reason she waited five years after Princess Aemma. 

Rhaenyra could recite the speculations back to front and sideways, but she couldn’t allow them influence over the environment she’d created for her children off little more than the hope they’d lead easier, happier lives than her father’s children. Favorites were for objects, gowns, meals, games…things without feelings of their own. Rhaenyra would’ve given anything for something to define her life that was greater, heavier than her father’s favoritism, but she had screamed, wailed, mourned, for such an existence so desperately it had torn a wound in her throat at the tender age of sixteen. All she could do now was forbid such talk of favorite children around her own and allocate her time as best she could to seal up the gaps where it may seep in elsewhere. 

Jace and Baela’s wedding seemed almost too perfect of an opportunity to open up streams of uncertainty and insecurity, perhaps it was a testament to her philosophy’s success that few had, but Rhaenyra often worried most about the child who’d inherited her own anxious nature. “I think these will look fantastic together!” She praised the scabbard and coordinating surcoat Aegon had chosen to highlight the blade his father had gifted him for his thirteenth nameday She shifted to face her son a bit more on the chaise where they’d been looking over different garments, accents, and jewels for him to pick from for the week of wedding celebrations now only a fortnight away.

“With everything happening, with Jace and Baela, have you been thinking at all about what you might like to be doing in five or ten years time? It’s a long way off for all of us I know, and you know I wouldn’t have any issue if thinking about anything at all after the wedding feels too much right now. But perhaps you could take the opportunity to consider if you have any goals that have begun to feel more forefront or even just people you wish to ensure would remain in your life.” She offered another smile to the boy who had the name his father always wished to give his firstborn son and her own mother’s eyes before assuring, “And we both know I am hardly entitled to your thoughts, but I will always be interested in hearing them.”

We’re delighted to see they have arrived safely on their journey to King’s Landing. Around the court the thirteen year old has been praised as courteous, studious and kind but some have whispered they are also quiet, argumentative and suspicious.
