or... The problem with sexism in the House of the Dragon fandom

time for another "controversial" post! this one is an article i wrote for a journalism course i just finished and since i got the highest grade, i'm sharing it here. it was originally written in swedish, but i've tried to do my best translating it and trying to keep the meaning as close to the original as possible. we didn't have a very high word limit, so there is much more to be said and many more examples to include, but i chose to focus on alicent because i knew it would be easy to find examples. in my first draft that was way over limit, i also included sansa stark and daenarys targaryen, and expanded way more on the why and how.

Sexism Around Fictional Characters Is Nothing New

Female characters are held to higher standards, their actions are seen as more criminal than those of men, and the right to be a victim? They lost that long ago.

This is evident in discussions about characters from the TV series House of the Dragon, based on Fire & Blood by George R.R. Martin, best known for writing the A Song of Ice and Fire series that inspired HBO's Game of Thrones.

Alicent Hightower: Criminally Female

In House of the Dragon, we follow characters like Alicent Hightower, a young girl married off to the king. She is isolated and lonely, with a strained relationship with the children she has with the much older Viserys. She is far from perfect and has certainly done things worthy of criticism, but the criticism she receives is disproportionately harsh compared to male characters.

For example, the burden of an entire war is placed solely on her shoulders.

Daemon Targaryen: Effortlessly Male

Male characters like Daemon Targaryen (rapist, murderer, pedophile) are placed on pedestals where their crimes are forgiven.

Of course, these are fictional characters—they haven’t committed real crimes; they exist in worlds with different views on law and justice. Yet people are hated for being fans of Alicent, while Daemon fans get a free pass. In fact, he is one of the most popular characters in House of the Dragon.

Female characters are judged as if they lived in our world, while male characters are understood as products of their fictional settings. For a woman to discipline a son she just learned is a rapist is as terrible as a man disowning a son for having a disability—and worse than committing mass murder.

This is sexism, though people deny it’s about gender. Of course, anyone can dislike any character, but when the language is harsher and being naïve is treated as a "crime" on par with rape, it’s hard not to see sexism at its core.

This issue isn’t unique to G.R.R.M.’s works. Galadriel from Rings of Power and Adriana from The Sopranos have also faced hate, despite the men in their series being worse: Sauron in Rings of Power and Christopher in The Sopranos.

Sexism in fandoms often stems from women and their interests not being taken as seriously. Like all forms of sexism, this isn’t a problem that’s easy to shake off. What we can do is keep asking people why they really hate that woman in that new TV series and hope that eventually, people realize a woman can be loved—even if she’s young, flawed, and fictional.

Just when did fandom become so toxic?

There have probably always been a few assholes lurking about but they seem to have become louder and more brazen in the past few years.

Take the case of Tom Glynn-Carney, who plays King Aegon II Targaryen on HBO's Game of Thrones prequel show House of the Dragon. This week, Glynn-Carney posted a plea to his Instagram Stories asking people to stop harassing his friends and loved ones, which is apparently a thing that's happening: « "It has been brought to my attention that there are messages being sent to my friends and loved ones that are of a hateful and harmful nature. Please stop. This behaviour is not acceptable. Accounts dedicated to this kind of trolling will be taken down. I think we can often forget the power of words. Spread only love. Tom" »

Tom Glynn-Carney is a very cool person. The sort of people who act like this to his friends and family deserve to have Ramsay Bolton as a landlord.

Online, some are assuming that people are targeting Glynn-Carney's friends and family specifically because of his role as Aegon. Glynn-Carney doesn't actually say that, although given that playing Aegon is by far what he's best known for, I don't suppose it could be anything else. Although that doesn't mean it makes any sense. Why in the holy hell would anyone send hateful messages to an actor for playing a role on a TV show, let alone send them to that actor's friends and family? What are people thinking?

The guardrails have come off of social media moderation in recent years. We need to show our displeasure by ditching and denouncing any platforms which make it easy for users to act like dicks to others.
