A student asked me a few days ago, what inspires me ( on my art account @doodyfish but is just as true here ). It made me stop and really think about it and this beloved book had and has a lot to do with it. Itās a marvellous mix of the real and the unreal of beautiful art and real knowledge. So thank you Raymond Sheppard and Enid, for this wonderful gift #raymondsheppard#adventuresofpip #artspiration#whimsy#illustrationart#penandinkart#bjd#bjds#rumpeldollabby #enidblyton (at Birmingham, United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/B68t_IBJdCU/?igshid=xfxtchrku4j8

Adventures of Pip Review: Pixel Perfect?
Indie 2D side-scrollers are practically a dime a dozen nowadays, so when a new one comes along, it has to do SOMETHING to set it apart, or it risks fading into obscurity. Adventures of Pip is yet another game to grace the Wii U eShop, and it does bring an interesting gimmick to the table, but is that enough? Letās find out!
Set in a kingdom where pixels are status symbols, our lowly hero Pip is a red box in a land filled with 16 and 32-bit citizens. However, when the evil Queen DeRezzia arrives and sends the kingdom into chaos, absconding with the princess of the land and turning random villagers (including the king and queen) into similarly limited boxels, Pip sets out to be the hero he knows he can be. The story attempts to be funny and tongue-in-cheek, but it didnāt do much for me. Not that it tries to have much of a story. What it does is enough, and I canāt fault whatās there.
On the gameplay side of things, you initially canāt do much. Pip can basically only jump and squeeze into tight spaces. However, he quickly gains access to the Bistream, giving him the power to absorb pixels from special enemies and ascending to the realms of 16-bit and 32-bit, with new forms and abilities to match. However, being in the right form at the right time is crucial to advancing through stages and you canāt just swap as you please. Pip has to defeat special glowing enemies to obtain a new form, and can only regress by holding down the āAā button, which also releases a shockwave that both damages foes and can break special pink blocks that otherwise bar progress. For a game with such wildly different forms and abilities, and without the ability to freely switch, I canāt imagine how tough this game was to playtest. Iām extremely happy to say that Tic Toc Games and their testers did an admirable job making the game a smooth experience overall. I only got stuck in a bad situation once, and even then that was my fault. I went looking for secrets where there werenāt any. The game ends up being very competently designed, always placing a special enemy near you when you need it and making sure each form is used constantly.
Generally, in Pipās default form heās light, so heāll float in water, be carried up by wind and bounce higher off of enemies or special springy mushrooms. His 16-bit form is a tad heavier, not jumping as high off of those same mushrooms. To compensate, this form can swim, runs much faster and can jump off walls, as well as freely cling to them. He even has arms that allow him to punch enemies! Adorable, 16-bit arms. His 32-bit form is the heaviest of all, not being pushed by wind, sinking in water and outright squishing the bouncy mushrooms rather than bouncing off of them. This form grants him a sword that can break special stone blocks, and has more reach to it when fighting off enemies and Pip can also move around large blocks in this form. As you go through the game, you can collect pixels as currency (so people areā¦.MADE of moneyā¦.guess that explains why Pipās dirt poor) and purchase Boosts (health drinks, temporary invincibility, etc.) and Upgrades for Pip. Sadly, the upgrades donāt radically affect his moveset all that much, though doubling the money you gain from enemies IS pretty useful.
While overall the game does a good job of making all three forms equally useful, I canāt help but dislike 2/3s of the forms available. Pipās default form is slow and extremely limited in what he can do, while the 32-bit form is so heavy he doesnāt run as fast or jump as far as his 16-bit form. Outside of the block moving and the sword to destroy stone blocks, the 32-bit form feels like an inferior upgrade. Hell, one upgrade you can buy allows the 16-bit formās attacks to break through the sword blocks, limiting the 32-bit formās usefulness even more. The gameās design has you changing forms all the time and Iāll stress again that all forms feel useful, but when it comes to the moment-to-moment control, the 16-bit form just feels SO much better. In a game all about running and jumping, doesnāt it make sense to prefer to have the most mobility possible? In that sense, the middle-child that is the 16-bit form stands out as a favorite, and made me even kinda resent being in the other two forms even when they were needed to progress.
Iād say the game has a decent slew of content, with three villagers to find in nearly forty levels, and the musicās a great listen. (It IS Jake Kaufman after all, though!) The gameās art design is solid, colorful and evoking a nice little blocky style, with the mixture of 8-bit, 16-bit and 32-bit sprites being an interesting idea that I think sadly wasnāt quite realized. For a game all about pixels, I find the sprite work in the game to be average at best. Itās certainly not BAD, but overall it feels middle of the road. Thatās my one major criticism of the game in general, really. Adventures of Pip isnāt bad by any stretch, and itās well-designed. I did have fun with it, but was never really wowed. If anything, the game is consistent. It doesnāt really get to many highs, but it also doesnāt get very low either, so thatās something.
I can give Adventures of Pip a recommendation, but not a strong or glowing one. Its levels are crafted well enough to utilize all of the form-switching youāll be doing, and the art and music are fine, if not great. Iād say the game is probably better than a good portion of the countless other indie 2D platformers on the market right now, but in in a world where Shovel Knight and Freedom Planet existā¦.you gotta step your game up.
Until next time.

In the platformer Adventures of Pip, our hero is Pip, a working-class pixel who is thrust into adventure when he witnesses the evil Queen DeRezzia attacking the kingdom's castle. In this kingdom, how many pixels you're made out of determines your place in society, and the evil Queen wants to end this by turning everyone [...]
