The Untimely Demise of Stephen O'Brien (sometimes I call it fomf)

Stephen O’Brien never gave death much thought, until it happened to him.  First it took his best friend, Sophie, a month before they both graduated. She hadn’t been looking, and neither had the driver.   From then on he hoped that when he eventually died, he would slip into that long, dark tunnel without even realizing, and that would be that. It would be peaceful.  Well, it wasn’t peaceful, and it happened about six decades too early (in his opinion).  Suddenly thrown into a topsy-turvy world inhabited by celestial bureaucrats who seemingly serve the human race without knowing too much about it, Stephen teams up with a defected Post-Expiry Counselor named Bromley as he tries to reunite with Sophie against all odds.  Deep down Stephen dreams of the remote possibility of finding her, and escaping back to Earth, and returning to the normal lives they both lost when Sophie died three years ago. But Counselors are not allowed to defect, and human souls are not allowed to cheat death, and all the while, shadowy forces threaten to destroy the afterlife system at its base.
