Red Flag Detector
Tumblr media
Beth, age 15, had to program a small digital device in school — an Adafruit Circuit Playground Express, I think.
“I finished the project today,” she said after she got home from school. “Everyone in class had to give their projects to other students to test them.”
“What did you make?” I asked.
“I made a red flag detector. There are a series of multiple-choice questions to answer, and it adds up your score to let me know how many red flags or green flags are in your personality.”
I looked at the picture on her phone. “Are you wearing this on your wrist?”
“That’s what I wanted originally, but then I felt it was too big with the green/red background envelope, so I made it a large pendant instead.”
“What were the questions?” asked Mom.
“They were folded up on a piece of paper slipped into the envelope behind the circuit board.” She showed us the list:
-----
1. Do you drink at least 64 oz. (8 cups) of water each day?
Yes (green)
No (red)
2. Did you enjoy playing with LEGOs as a child?
Yes (green)
No (red)
3. How do you prefer broccoli?
Roasted (green)
Boiled (red)
Not at all (red)
4. Is $100 too much for a hoodie?
Yes (green)
No (red)
5. Do you shower on a daily basis?
Yes (green)
No (red)
6. Do you floss your teeth every day?
Yes (green)
No (red)
7. How was the Barbie movie with Margot Robbie? Or, if you didn’t see it, then what about Legally Blonde or the cartoon version of Mulan?
Good (green)
Bad (red)
Didn’t see any of them (red)
8. Is any given movie adaptation better than the book?
Yes (red)
No (green)
9. Do you enjoy watching people suffer?
Yes (green)
No (red)
10. Have you committed larceny recently?
Yes (red)
No (green)
Don’t know what it is (red)
11. Do you like dogs?
Yes (green)
Yes, just not Chihuahuas (green)
No (red)
12. Can you cook for yourself? (toasters and microwaves don’t count)
Yes (green)
No (red)
13. Are neon colors better than pastels?
Yes (red)
No (green)
14. Do you spend at least ten minutes outdoors every day?
Yes (green)
No (red)
15. Did you make your bed this morning?
Yes (green)
No (red)
-----
“That’s pretty funny,” I said, “though it’s rather subjective to you.”
“Yes,” said Mom, “and I think you need to weight these scores. Not liking broccoli is one thing, but ‘watching people suffer’ is a whole different level of red flag.”
“Yeah, that’s a few thousand red flags compared to broccoli or neon colors, or even larceny,” I said. “So how did the testing go with other students?”
Beth sighed. “The first group of testers were all boys. They decided to change some of the red flag answers to green flags. Like, ‘Do you shower on a daily basis?’ they decided ‘yes’ was a red flag. Or ‘Can you cook for yourself?’ they decided ‘yes’ was a red flag. So they changed how they answered the questions just to mess up the results. And they didn’t know what larceny was, so they decided that was not a valid question.”
“That’s a lesson in itself,” I said. “If you’re looking to date, other people are going to have very different standards than you.”
Mom rolled her eyes. “And boys are going to try to change the answers on you — and they’ll probably argue with you about why they think you’re wrong.”
Beth shrugged. “They didn’t argue,” she said. “They didn’t really say anything. I think they don’t know how to talk to girls who are already thinking about red flags.”

Ah, your comic reading experience is interesting considering how the anime and manga boon seems to keep most of its young audience in perpetual adolesnce - by that I mean that there are 30 year olds that read and watched those shows and read the comics since they were young kids, yet even the surface level messaging intended for 10 year olds in japan seems to fly over their heads instead just obssessing over deabtes of "who would beat who" lol
Yes, and I'm trying to be literal about this, not judgmental. I've read manga that makes literary and cultural allusions, certainly, but the average American mainstream comic circa 1985 or 1995, like an X-Men or Superman comic, simply had more words on the page and a broader and more sophisticated vocabulary. Again, not a claim about aesthetic quality but about the perceived verbal literacy of the audience. The counter-argument, familiar from McCloud's Understanding Comics, is that the American material was actually less sophisticated in its use of form than much manga: that something like Claremont's X-Men, for all its vaunted literacy, was little better than an illustrated text compared for example to the verbally null but formally rich Akira. And that's true, too. Comics, like cinema and theater, aren't exactly literature and don't need to be held to that standard from an artistic point of view any more than painting or sculpture do; but from the point of view of cultural criticism these forms can seem to be implicated in the general decline of literacy. It's difficult but necessary to take both these views at once.

Quincy Horst Headcanons (New Year Edition 🐉🇦🇺)
Hello. Happy 2024! 🎇
I still struggle to articulate my thoughts at the moment, but I want to thank everyone for the support during this 2023. 💞 I'm genuinely grateful that even if this blog remains small, there's people out there that want to listen to the silly stories I give these characters. There's so much to share yet, like the Euro B coaches and the Toro Blanco, but I have confidence I will be able to do it soon. Thank you for waiting, and on the meantime, let's talk about something else today.
Back on my main blog @/brucemarlin I remember reblogging a drawing with THE Bruce Marlin for the first post of the year 2023. Why not doing the same for here, too? Given I don't post much about Quincy Horst despite my URL, I guess this is a good way to fix it.
To clarify, this is a summarized outline. So unlike Gareth -which I divided in detailed parts-, this is a bullet point with smaller pieces, but that do explain my overall ideas with Quincy at least until the FFI. This is also a very rushed post, so forgive me for any mistakes.
Quincy was born in Kalgoorlie, the so-called aussie city of gold. However due to issues his family had to move out to Esperance later on.
Overall, the Horst family had been operating a mining company since their arrival to Australia, but lately the business has been struggling with many things, such as past controversies and their main goldmine starting to dry out.
This is where Quincy's profile comes out, he desires as to find a goldmine mainly as economical support (and a quick way to gain fame for himself). Ironically he does get into the geological aspects later on in life.
He is the 5th child in a family of 7, mostly composed of girls. The other boy in the family went already to study at Canberra, so he's absent most of the time. This led for Quincy to interact with his sisters more, obviously with the consequence of him getting mannerisms, atitude and interests that can be seen as """girly""". Not a bad thing at all, but it did gave him a hard time at school; specially from the other boys.
But unlike similar situations, Quincy did the risky thing of actually fighting his own bullies back. It didn’t end up well, and while it helped his parents realize the gravity of the situation, by that point Quincy had gotten tried.
For the rest of his adolesnce, he developed the radical choice of hating anything girly (Be interests or even just the color pink), at the same time trying to find ways to look "cooler" or "macho". Until he grew up from it, this did strain the relationship with most of his sisters; specially those he once used to play with.
But not everything was bad, at least. Around the end of Primary School, turns out Quincy's aunt started to date a man of surname Marlin, who also had a son. The boy named Bruce was quick to befriend Quincy due to their similar age and interests, so at least Quin finally had another boy to rely on. Hell, he does consider Bruce to be more of an older brother figure than his actual bro.
Thanks to him Quincy also got onto soccer, though by getting accidentally hit by one of his show-off shots. The sudden incident at least made Quincy develop interest into becoming a goalkeeper. While researching aboit the sport he soon stumbled upon Jean Baker, the keeper from Sydney whose fame was slowly growing. Finding him badass, Quin started to use him as a role-model on his training. But soon the sentiment grew from "I want to be like him" to "I will be BETTER than him C:<"
I guess that's the most essential info for now; there's still quite lots of things to talk about Quincy and his family on detail, but this is a good outline of what I have.
But, here's a little add-on, since we are on the Year of the Dragon: Since their origins, the Horst family has kept for generations the very exclusive belief of the Horst Dragon, a mythical draconic creature that has been protecting them for centuries, even when the family moved from Germany to Australia. Even to this day Mr. Horst is a firm believer of this creature, and he was succesful to pass this enthusiasm on his son. Quincy is the most passionate child about the Horst Dragon, even more than his other -skeptical- siblings. He even claims at times that the Horst Dragon helps him to guard the goal. Huh.

SPEAKING + WRITING - GLOBAL 9.1 (Part 2)
Adolescence.
Everyone has experienced their adolesnce, that is one of the most memorable time. Adolescence is the time of your body starting to grow many aspects of mental and physical health. It's the period between childhood and young adult hood. It means it usually starts at the age from 12 to 18. Your body starts to form our own shape and your height increases a lot faster. Moreover, your brain grows, makes your thoughts and your feeling sharper. You have your self-control better and more reasoning skills. The emotional changes can make you feel more independent. You have to take on responsibilities for what you have done. Self-aware which makes you think more carefully before doing something important. Finally, You will care more about people's opinion and what they say about you. That is why we need to get the advices from our adults such as our parents, our teacher, the advisors, and so on.
----
OUR WAYS OF ENTERTAINMENT IN THE PAST.
In the past, people used to prefer outdoor activities such as playing football, riding a bike, and flying kites. They took nature as their own playground. They often spent time playing and talking to each other. Also, they didn't know about obesity and girls didn't have worry about fat and go on a diet. Otherwise, they didn't eat out, they ate at home, sometimes with a snack from the street vendors. They did use to keep a diary, in which they could write some events and their feeling and their private thoughts too. Finally, children used their time in the day for reading books a lot, using lots of imagination that they could think of the content of the books longer and easily.
-----------
LIVING IN THE CITY.
Living in urban areas brings many great advantages. Firstly, it offers a great convenience of services to its dwellers. As a result, they stand the chance to receive the best possible healthcare and enjoy the entertainment options, as there is a huge range of recreational places and healthcare systems available in every city.
Secondly, the urban areas open avenue for job hunting. Most of the corporate offices, factories, government offices, garments and companies are either situated in a city or close to the city.
Finally, the recent advancements in technology and transportation comfort the urban lifestyle. The large number of transports facilities has made life easy to live in the metropolis areas and the commuting to work is not a problem. Furthermore, the media and means of communication enables people to get information, catch up with the latest. To sum up, living in a big city is generally considered to be beneficial in multiple ways.
LIVING IN THE COUNTRYSIDE.
I like living in the countryside for a number of reasons. It is a peaceful place with fresh air. We can enjoy a healthy natural condition without worrying much about air pollution. Moreover, rural is a safer place than a city. Because most of the villagers are friendly and willing to help each other. There is less traffic so it's safe for children. The special thing that people like living in the countryside is the cost of living here usually cheaper so this is an idea place to raise the child. In contrast, the bad thing is very rare in the countryside. To sum up, except the problem of income, the countryside is a residence better than the cities.

taking backstory revealed in Adolesnce of Utena (and thus the revelation that he was abused as a child) conjunction w touga’s silence in the black rose arc actually creates an extremely interesting dissonance in the show’s narrative. because you have a character, at this point, adament in their belief that people hurt by others deserve such for being foolish enough to have been tricked by them. and touga’s utter silence on the abuse he faced as a child in that arc is rlly striking to me. because the ommission almost speaks to the fact that touga can’t acknowledge what happened to him, by virtue of what he’s come to believe because it happened.

A Lazytown that focuses on Mental Health, with a new hero. That’s what Thoughtville is!
Lazytown (2), "Thoughtville" takes a different approach to health by focusing on the mental health aspect of children, teens and adults alike. It's all about helping people through depression, anxiety, and all the mental illnesses or troubles one may face in their youth/late adolesnce. It's the message that no one is ever too far gone - that nothing is ever hopeless including you. Lazytown 2 is about recovery and personal growth  from trauma both emotionally and mentally.
In Lazytown (2), the villain of the show is Rottenella, or just Ella; the cold and depressive successor to Robbie Rotten. In the original show, Rottenella was a music box toy brought to life and in this show, she's gotten her own life and story and has separated herself from simply being a robot/music box doll brought to life... kind of. She lacks emotions - or at least she thinks she does - resigning herself to the cold heart of wires and cogs. She sees no point in trying to be anything else, and expands this to the children when they're sad that "well deal with it, that’s life” kind of approach.
Unlike Lazytown 1, Rottenella is openly included in the lessons in Lazytown 2. Sportacus makes an effort to help her too, despite her villainous ways.
Lazytown 2 is also a tad darker, though. It goes into much more real and serious, less-talked about topics. Including but not limited to: Hallucinations, suicide, grief, self-harm, drug addictions, personality/mood disorders, sleep paralysis/nightmares, intrusive thought, therapy, the importance of medication... Eating disorders, too.
The main kids of the show pay a homage to mental illness, similar to how the kids of Lazytown pay homage to some traits (greediness, computer obsession, etc.) The main kid is named Stefan (as a tribute) who represents gender dysphoria. He comes to Thoughtville after being kicked out of his home and meets  a few kids there who are Fret, Preston, Annie, Bobbie, Charlie (the triplets), and Seth. All of them represent, in some way, something troubling. Similar to how Stingy represents Greed, Pixel is computer addiction, Ziggy is obesity, you get it. Fret is Anxiety. Preston is Depression. Annie, Bobbie and Charlie group together Cluster A/B/ and C. Seth is Self-Esteem.
Over the first season, we meet Sportacus Eleven (obviously) in episode 2 (first episode is dedicated to establishing the kids). Each kid has their own unique troubles that Sportacus helps them with, cuz shes an Emotional Hero unlike Sportacus Ten who was more physical, and her villain, Rottenella, or Ella struggles with feelings and emotions since she was originally just a music box doll, shes not really human enough to feel until Eleven comes along, of course.
By the end of season 1, there’s this reveal thats been built up throughout that Stefan (our main kid) is actually transgender and thats why they were kicked out of their house and by the start of season 2 begins to be comfortable in their identity and begins to go by she/her and the name Stephanie which is a throwback to the first Lazytown’s main character.
That’s all I’ve got so far - but tell me what you think!

*Dealing Challenges of Adolescence Stage
When entering adolesnce it means that we are preparing for adulthood. Of course, some of us are excited for the new things and some are worried or afraid because they are still not ready for the responsibilities they gonna take. When I was entering this stage I was excited and worried at the same time. I face challenges that leads me to changes my perspective, the way I think, the way I find any solution to overcome this problems or challenges. Sometimes when my groupmates don't cooperate, I Initiate to them that we should make this and that. I gave my idea and help them to understand so that we can work together as a group. Because of this I gain experiences and lessons that I still have untill now. Taking challenges doesn't mean that you are superior that anyone. But you are ready to accept changes in you.
Also when adolescence come up, there are many issues or factor that everyone faces, and this affect us individually. But despite of this negative factors we overcome it and now we are better than before. Don't think that this challenges can bring you down. But this challenges, challenge you and to motivate you "Stay positive, even when it feels like life is falling apart. - ctto". Keep in mind that as long as we live. Their are many opportunities and chances to take this challenge. It may break you or make you a better person but at least you take the opportunity to challenge yourself. Don't be afraid to lose, just keep facing challenges and be strong, physically, emotionally and mentally.

before i even knew what the internet was and what it could of been to my young adolesnce brain what with forums and other online social media at the time so no roleplaying as neopets for me no me and my brother for the most part created "fanfiction" stories about my sims characters and it wasn't like "oh these 2 get together oh and these work at a coffee shop" or whatever it was like someone dies, chaotic story plots, and even like making some of the characters catholic for no reason.

“You keep worrying you’re taking up too much space. I wish you’d let yourself be the milky way” - Andrea Gibson
Savoring the morning with the first actual mug of coffee I’ve found in this country, everything else comes in a shot glass. My aversion to coffee in the mornings has been in part a result of an (involuntary) abstaining from caffeine. The break has been unexpectedly lovely, as I’ve known coffee isn’t great for me, assumed it made my thoughts, which are already prone to operating like luggage carousel in overdrive, rev in a hyperactive state.
But the other reason for this absence of my favorite morning ritual, is I need more physical space than this country offers to enjoy the quintessential moments that one simply must try in order to say they’ve been to France. Yes, tiny cafes lining the alleyways and bordering the open squares are absolutely adorable, but trying to fumble your way into them is tough, trying to make yourself comfortable once the fumbling has subsided is impossible. It’s not that these people have shorter limbs than me (although they do keep commenting on my height), but maybe their upbringing in these contained environments aided their ability to remain gracefully compact. I grew up where I could stretch and flail and twirl about, throw myself into the ocean then onto the sand covering myself in a ganache that was a real treat to get out of my hair. Plus, my gene pool makes my susceptible to expressing a distinct presence as we pass down vocal chords that produce what kind people describe as “a voice that carries” and honest people say, “you’re loud.”
As I’ve gotten older, I’m uncovering how the physical ways I carry myself influenced my understanding of self-worth. I used to equate the volume with which I spoke as an indicator of the quality of my thoughts, so that being acknowledged (aka speaking loud enough) meant what I said was important. This false understanding also persuaded me to think that what wasn’t heard and acknowledged was insignificant. In recent years, I’ve relearned that old tree falling in the forest saying and understood the value of my words is not dictated by their volume or by the quantity of people they reach or by the speed at which they come out.
I also studied how the inconspicuous physical grace of girls and women around me afforded them either more attention or the ability to go unnoticed in a way my insecurity craved. I wanted both. Starting in my adolesnce, I hoped to make myself small to fulfill this distorted idea that the smaller my presence, the higher my desirability, as well as fulfill my wish to dissolve, to physically escape from my internal, perpetual self-doubt. Note: when I refer to this physicality, I’m referencing the weight of one’s personality & presence, not necessarily one’s actual figure, although there is something to be said for the connection between the two.
This summer, I highlighted this quote in a book as it perfectly summed up the paradox of female adolescence: “I’m so tired [of] letting myself get smaller and smaller in hopes that he would notice me more. How can someone notice you if you keep getting smaller?”
I’m still trying to unpack this rationale, but what I’ve got so far is as we perceive our value as a reflection of our desirability by others, we shrink further away into ourselves to become a piece of tissue paper: we can be crumpled and folded, our shapes dependent on the actions of others, and without their control, we would fly away.
My upbringing nurtured my confidence as I was permitted to unapologetically take up space, but once I began to compare myself, I became tired of being told I “intimated others, made it seem like I didn’t need them” and would be attractive “later on in life, men love confident women.” With an adolescent inability to see far into the future and a need to fit in (ty undeveloped frontal lobe), I ignored the beauty others would eventually find in my perceivable high self-esteem and sought instant gratification, becoming tissue paper.
Alas, I’ve shed that tissue paper bullshit because being crumpled and held down hurt more than being told I was intimidating, that one day, men would love my confidence. Saying men love confidence suggests boys love insecurity, and both perpetuate fucked up power dynamics and create unsustainable reasons/ineffective solutions to loving yourself.
By challenging myself to take up as much space as possible, by throwing myself out into the world, I stopped equating the space I take up to my desirability, the love I have for myself to the love others have for me, and learned how much more I could open myself up to the love of others as I started to I know myself as a rad fucking chick.
What a long journey to figuring out how and why I like to sprawl when I drink coffee. I think I have to switch to decaf or tea tho.
