The first five-star admirals were Admirals Leahy, King, and Nimitz. Bill Halsey got his fifth star in December, 1945.
Did he actually do anything to deserve that fifth star, other than having a crackerjack public relations team?
I think it's fair to say that the Allies racked up some big victories in the South Pacific and Philippines under Halsey's command. Leyte Gulf alone was a massive battle and really important for the Allies. But I'm not an expert on naval warfare or the Pacific Theater, so there are much better people to ask about that than me.

Q: Did you listen to Ram? A: Yes, of course I did. A couple of times. The first time I heard it I thought, fucking hell, it was awful. And then, ahem, the second time I fixed the record player a bit, and it sounded better. I enjoyed a couple, like a little bit of ‘My Dog It’s Got Three Legs’ or something, and the intro to ‘Ram On’ and the intro to ‘Uncle Albert’. I can’t STAND the second track from the… I mean, well, that doesn’t matter anyway.[…]I was really surprised when I saw that bit…
(John Lennon, August 7th, 1971, interview with Alan Smith for NME)
Both John and I had a great love for music hall, what the Americans call vaudeville… I very much liked that old crooner style, the strange fruity voice that they used, so Honey Pie was me writing one of them to an imaginary woman, across the ocean, on the silver screen, who was called Honey Pie. It’s another of my fantasy songs.[…]
(Paul McCartney in Many Years From Now by Barry Miles)
…the butter wouldn't melt so I put it in the pie…
hands across the water heads across the sky hands…ahem…across the…ahem…
honey pie you are making me crazy I'm in love but I'm lazy so won't you please come home?
oh honey pie you are driving me frantic sail across the Atlantic to be where you belong* honey pie, come back to me
*get back to where you once belonged

Paul & Linda McCartney - "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey" From the album Wings Greatest (November 10, 1978)
Last song scrobbled from iTunes at Last.fm
So, the story was told in this documentary on Hipgnosis I watched, that the design team built the statue of Britannia you see, then flew to the Himalayas so that it could planted in the authentically Tibetan snows for the cover pic, rather than, I don't know, dumping some ice in an industrial sink or something and then taking the picture of the statue there--but *telling* people they went to Tibet, and--oh OK, I see what happened here.

nothing is more embarrassing than being in public and taking out your earbuds and realizing you've been living in musical world and practically skipping down the sidewalk this whole time when in fact no one else can hear your soundtrack

Middle kiddo was doing her ADHD thing of humming a single line from a song over and over again. It was driving me absolutely nuts because whatever she was humming was reminding me of an old as balls song my dad used to play when I was little. This happens a lot. I can remember tiny little snatches of melody, but not enough that I can actually look up the song, so these ghost melodies haunt my brain and make me itchy. (That’s MY adhd thing) She was humming it over and over again and it was setting my brain on fire so I kept asking her to stop.
Yesterday instead of just humming it she actually said some lyrics and I should have remembered that this kid only listens to retro music, because would you look at that, she was not humming something that sounded LIKE this old phantom song, she was actually humming THE old phantom song, and then I was able to find out what song it was and finally exorcise its ghost from my brain.

A very small ask. Just to satisfy my curiosity. In Simpson's chapter, an Admiral Halsey pops up very briefly. Is this a nod to "Bull" Halsey or just random dude with random name?
Both.
Also a reference to one of my most favorite Ice/Mav/Bradley songs which is "Uncle Albert / Admiral Halsey" by Paul & Linda McCartney. And I believe THAT song is a reference to Bull Halsey.
but jeez Louise it's the most Uncle Ice/Admiral Kazansky song ever...

Song of the day:
Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey - Paul & Linda McCartney
“Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey” was the second single released from Paul & Linda McCartney’s 1971 album Ram. It reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 September of 1971!
Paul said that he "would repeat the use of this song structure on the 1974 hit “Band On The Run”." (By that, I think he meant the slower song in the beginning, then changing to a whole new tempo & vibe in the second half of the song.
Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey is by Paul & Linda McCartney but it does appear on the "Wings Greatest" Album.
Paul said in an interview: “I had an uncle – Albert Kendall – who was a lot of fun, and when I came to write 'Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey' it was loosely about addressing that older generation, half thinking 'What would they think of the way my generation does things?, That's why I wrote the line 'We're so sorry, Uncle Albert. The song then shifts into the “Admiral Halsey” section, beginning with the upbeat refrain “hands across the water, heads across the sky.” Paul said this section was inspired by his relationship with his then-new wife, Linda.

I just saw how ten old boy listening to Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey for the first time! He looked so amazed - like he expected quiet calm bus tour between green hills and rosy fields and it suddenly turned into mad helter skelter across the whole universe
