before anyone crucifies me disclaimer i love that hbo ER show however i think their intended messaging about fatphobia and transphobia might resonate a lot more truthfully if they actually had doctors in the main cast who are fat and/or trans

#was trying to put my finger on why those subplots felt a bit performative and i think it's bc i'm #growing generally disillusioned with the 'exists in one episode as a perfect patient to teach the doctors a lesson' mode of representation #additionally i wish they would explicitly state that mel has adhd/autism. i think neurotypical audiences are very comfortable with the #'ambiguous disorder' method of writing adhd-coded or autistic-coded characters #and very uncomfortable if those characters are open and unapologetic about their diagnosis #especially since taylor has adhd and explicitly performs mel as also being on the adhd/autism spectrum #i think overall i would love to see fat characters written with fat audiences in mind and trans characters written with trans audiences #in mind and neurodivergent characters written with neurodivergent audiences in mind #rather than having to exist primarily to teach the majority a moral lesson #the pitt
