#SJComix365 - Jan 30 - Today marks the anniversary of the launch of the Vietnamese Tet Offensive, notes by many to be a turning point in the war. It became a moment when critical reflection on the US military machine could no longer be denied. “Addicted to War: Why the Us Can’t Kick Militarism” by Joel Andreas is a summary of those critical reflections, in comic book form. In the 1990s, when Joel was a high school teacher, he was disappointed in the precious few resources he could find about the role of war in #USHistory - so he set out to make such a resource. Each chapter handles a different aspect of US militarism, moving more or less chronologically. Since it’s original publishing, this book (originally self-published) has sold 100,000s of copies, and is being used in a number of school districts. An indispensable read for anyone who needs a crash course in 250 years of US military history. #addictedtowar #joelandreas #comics #warcomics #graphichistory #miltarism #USmilitarism #USforeignpolicy #UScolonialism #manifestdestiny #USimperialism https://www.instagram.com/p/BtRL_qQg7T-/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=7g4vho42b3sr

'Schools are run down and over-crowded. In some inner-city high schools, 80% of the students drop out. More than a fifth of all adults can't read a job application or a street sign. Yet federal education funding per student has declined substantially over the last two decades. ' Books that I come across ! Non-fiction is not my cup of tea, but graphic non-fiction is something I have soft corner for. But never had I thought graphic expose was possible too! This sleek book is a critique of American imperialism that has spread over eight decades now. It traces the history of The U.S. and it's never ending wars with various countries. The book opens with a mother and her child. The child asks his mom to help at bake sale to raise money for toilet paper. Hence with this begins the doodle mother and son's digging out history of the land and economics. Where does her half of the pay check go? She begins to question why Federal Discretionary Budget have 51% devoted to military expenditure but 7% to education.the book covers all the wars from Cuba to Vietnam to Iraq. And describes American Populations frustration through what is known as Vietnam Syndrome. The art is very clean and simple, discards animisim and sticks to caricature of big shots from Fox News to General Electrics. Portrays victims of war with sympathy and doesn't shy away to show anger towards the serious war addicts of The U.S. #addictedtowar by #joelandreas #book #reading #bookstagram #bookreview #instabook #reader #bibliophile #literaturelover #graphicnonfiction #illustrated #illustration #booklover #graphicnovel #bookworm #art #instabooks #literature #booknerd #comicbooks #bookgeek #bookworm #bookover #bookphotography #bookaholic #booklovers #booklove #bookaddict #bookish #caricature (at Golf Green)

Great read, the history of militarization in the U.S. is truly disturbing. All the more reason for troops to GTFO of other countries, esp in the Middle East & the Asia-Pacific #addictedtowar #UStroopsout #notoUSimperialism
