“What’s often not discussed often in the oh-i’m-so-busy-it-should-blow-your-mind discussions is the underlying motivation behind the busyness. Sometimes, we use our busyness to impress. If I’m busy, I’m important, and if I’m important, then you’ll be impress. Right? Aren’t we all guilty of this fact? A buddy calls you up and asks you out for lunch sometime, and instead of answering succiently, you feel compelled to give them the numerous rundowns for the week.

Why can’t we just say no? Or at a minimum, reply, that’s a kind offer. You know, I could swing some Friday this week, or else would some time early next week work for you instead?” 

Here’s why we can’t say that, because that is not an impressive answer. 

Busyness serves as a kind of existential resassurance, a hedge against emptiness. Obviouls your life cannot be silly or trivial or meaningless if you are so busy, completely booked, in demand every hour of the day?”

We love to impress, because we tend to base our self worth on those numerous hours of schedules and meetings and revolve our life around them. It makes us significant, impressive, actually doing something with our life and being successful.

But why do we seek such external affirmation when God has given us the greatest affirmation of our worth?

Luke 12:6-7

Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.
