Happy 19th Birthday, Stargate Atlantis!

On July 16th, 2004, the pilot aired. Here's a handy little primer for anyone who doesn't know what the heckity heck this show is about. Everything is totally accurate, 100% true and very, very serious.

So.

This is the lost city of the Ancients, Atlantis, in the Pegasus galaxy, about 3 million light years from Earth. (The Ancients can go fuck themselves. Long story.) Atlantis is a city/spaceship approximately the size of Manhattan. She's semi-sentient, but not really, except actually yes, maybe, sometimes, totally. The whole city can go underwater or into hyperspace. Loves her humans. Home. Declaration of independence imminent.

The Atlantis expedition consists of civilians and military from at least 34 countries (in later seasons, the original expedition was just over a dozen). In no particular order:

Dr. Elizabeth Weir. The first leader of the expedition. The only adult. Sometimes. Okay, not very often. Is not above a little war crime for the good of the galaxy—or at least, for the good of Atlantis. Left a boyfriend and a dog on Earth, but we all miss the dog more than the boyfriend. Eats UN representatives for breakfast. Is terribly awkward on dates and really good at solitaire. Loves her chaos children. Which are:

Lt. Colonel Suicide Mission John Sheppard. Walked through the Gate and Atlantis said, "dibs". Thinks people who don't want to fly are crazy. Not good with emotional stuff. (He's getting better.) Loves his found space family and would die for them, often literally. Stop that. Also loves Ferris wheels, things that go fast, and Rodney McKay. And no, we don't know how he gets his hair to go like that.

Dr. Meredith Rodney McKay. Four degrees, two of which are PhDs, none of which are in social skills. Smartest man in two galaxies. Used to be an asshole, but got himself some friends who loved him such a stupid amount that he had no choice but to change. Still a work in progress. We love to see it. Blew up three quarters five sixths of a solar system. (It was uninhabited.) (Mostly.) Deathly allergic to citrus. Loves fully charged ZPMs, arguing with Dr. Zelenka, MREs, and John Sheppard.

Lieutenant Aiden Ford. Went ass first through the Gate with a grin and a whoop on his very first trip. One of the youngest members of the expedition. Is not allowed to name anything, ever. Mild case of hero worship when it comes to his commanding officer, which is totally understandable. A cautionary tale of how addiction messes up not only you, but the people around you.

Ronon Dex. Used to be hunted by the Wraith, lost his people in a terrible war, and is now a member of Sheppard's team where he gets to shoot things and beat up bad guys. Doesn't talk much, but when he does, he has something to say. Good friend. Excellent hugs, but have Carson check you out for any cracked ribs after. Is one bottle of Athosian wine away from staging an intervention regarding the Sheppard/McKay situation.

Teyla Emmagan. In possession of the team's one brain cell. Leader of the Athosian people. Will rock a baby to sleep and then go outside where a Wraith is dangling from the highest tower of the city and stomp on his hands until he falls 800 feet. Can either beat you up in the gym or force you to meditate on your problem, your choice. Has the aforementioned bottle of wine ready and loaded.

Dr. Radek Zelenka. Keeps the science team sane because Rodney sure as hell doesn't. Loves pigeons, cursing in Czech, and overseeing the thriving black market underground economy that has developed in the city. (Thanks @shaddyr for that lovely headcanon). Zachránil všechny naše zadky víc než jednou.

Chuck the Technician. Aggressively Canadian. Doesn't have a last name, doesn't need one. Is ALWAYS in the control room, seriously man, when do you sleep? Reads trashy sci fi novels on night shifts and organized a betting pool in 5 different currencies when Ronon was fighting Teal'c. Needs to share his eyelash routine because we're jealous.

Dr. Carson Beckett. The most Scottish Scot to ever Scot. Brilliant medical doctor who is not above the occasional unethical unorthodox treatment method. Sweet cinnamon roll of a man. Beloved by all. Loves his mom and wee baby turtles. Someone should take him fishing soon. 🥹

Colonel Samantha Carter. Member of SG-1. Legend. Awesome. Boss. Absolute BAMF. Punched a Goa'uld system lord in the face once. We all have a crush on her.

Dr. Jennifer Keller. Is very doctor-y, for better and for worse. Was all of us when she freaked out being on an alien planet for the first time, like a normal person would. Should totally have gone on a date with Captain Vega in that one deleted scene. [WE COULD HAVE HAD IT AAAAALL]

Jeannie Miller. Rodney's sister. Gave up a career in science to be a mom. Solved Rodney's math problem in her spare time, with finger paints. Loves her brother even when he's being an idiot. Fanfic canon says: her house is always open for him and certain Air Force Colonels to crash in. Don't you dare get a hotel room. Yes, the guest room has Only One Bed, Mer, what's your point?

Major Evan Lorne. If you are a moron and get yourself captured and imprisoned off world, he will swing by real quick with a couple Marines and bust you out. Co-parents Atlantis with Dr. Weir. Is actually a really talented painter. Needs a raise, a holiday, and a drink.

Colonel Steven Caldwell. Grumpy. Has to deal with Elizabeth's chaos children on a regular basis. Will make the enemy ship go away with a big boom and save your sorry ass in space. AGAIN.

Richard Woolsey. Used to be a New York City lawyer, one of the most ruthless creatures in the universe. His wife got the Yorkie in the divorce. Broke his heart. Is actually pretty cool if you let him do his thing (like get you out of an intergalactic war crimes trial by bribing the judges).

I know some characters and all the villains are missing, but this post is already longer than a trip on the Daedalus, so there you have it.

Stargate Atlantis. A show about wormholes, life-sucking aliens, ancient civilisations, space battles—and family, friendship, allowing yourself to love and be loved, and what it means to be home.

Stargate-Atlantis S5: E3 Broken Ties

Sheppard retaining self-control when talking to Woolsey and asking for permission to go off world was great. The room not opening for Woolsey is his payback. Lol. Atlantis is toying with the man.

Another Sheppard/McKay mirroring. McKay comes into the mess hall and doesn't even feel like eating because he's worried about Ronon. He sees Sheppard who also isn't eating because he's worried about Ronon.

Sheppard does good when he refuses to let Teyla blame him for her indecision. He can't wait on missions every time to see if she does or doesn't want to go.

(Total personal note: while I'm glad they show Teyla hesitating to rejoin the team, I wish they'd actually had her not join, but take up a position that let her be with her son. I think it would have been her doing the more important work. There are other ways to serve other than combat. Think of the power if she had focused on raising a son to take over the leadership of her people, maybe Atlantis, and defend the Galaxy. What a gift that would have been.)

Sheppard: this is about a desperate guy willing to do anything to save his buddy?

Woolsey: how can you be so sure?

Sheppard: because I've been there.

Ronon takes Sheppard out with one blow. Poor Tyer knowing Ronon's "betrayal" is his fault. Rodney being Rodney and worrying over the whole situation. Sheppard being Sheppard and repeating that they're going to get Ronon back.

The team gathered and worried about Ronon is perfect. Ronon saying Sheppard's name first when he wakes sane and drug free. Rodney joyfully screaming, "he's back!"

Um, at the end, when they're debriefing with Woolsey, down at the side of the shot, John face is hysterical when he drinks some coffee. What even was that???

I love Woolsey "relaxed".

The ultimate beauty of this episode is the Wraith telling Tyre it's not too late to be forgiven. Tyre rejects Wraith's forgiveness to earn Ronon's forgiveness. Then Sheppard told Ronon Tyre was a real friend and gave him Tyre's sword. Just beautiful.

Woot! I’m gonna do SGA, bc it’s my main fandom, and SGU, bc I know it’s more your favorite.

(I do wish I was more aware of what the unpopular opinions in the fandom are bc I have no idea how mine rank on a popularity scale...)

💚: What does everyone else get wrong about your favorite character?

My favorite SGA character is Todd, and I’m not sure I can think of a specific something that I think everyone gets wrong about him. I encourage people to have more, wilder takes on Todd. Maybe always pairing him up with John is something I don't like? Lmao, it’s the pot calling the kettle black, but I do wish that there were more fics that explored him in other relationships. They do have good chemistry, so I get it, but I guess I'm just a rare-pair shipper at heart and now that John/Todd is getting more popular I want rarer stuff. 😅

My favorite SGU character is Greer. I do not remember ever reading anything that I felt got him wrong, so... Please have wrong takes about Greer, world. Reading bad takes annoys me and makes me want to write my own fics. 😂

🖤: Which character is not as morally good as everyone else seems to think?

This is so interesting, because SGA is the war-crimes apologist fandom, so I don’t think everyone thinks anyone is particularly morally good.  I’m gonna say Heightmeyer. I can never forgive her specifically for the way she lied to Michael, betraying her profession and his trust, and I was unmoved by her death. I feel like she has a few fans so that’s probably an unpopular opinion.

SGU is a morally grey character hot spot so... Maybe Caine? I think we’re supposed to think he’s “good” but I’m not sure if everyone actually does. I'll say also that Riley is really annoying me on my current watch-through of the series. I feel like he'd be that friend who's always like "we should do this because it's the right thing to do" in whatever situation, when actually it's just the most annoying thing to do.

💖: What is your biggest unpopular opinion about the series?

I’m not sure about biggest… I feel like this is probably pretty niche, but I’ve seen a couple takes about Kolya being sexually abusive to Todd during his captivity. I don't know if people are taking this as a headcanon or just a fic idea... but while I think it’s an interesting idea, I disagree with it having happened. Mostly just because I don’t see Kolya as being a sexual person, I don't get that energy from him. (Yes, he is certainly a sadist, he gets pleasure from breaking people down, but I don’t think it’s sexual for him.)

For SGU, I once got a repudiating comment on a post because I was ragging on the show for having bad writing, but I don’t necessarily think that’s an unpopular opinion. How about, I wish Amanda was in more episodes and I wish there was more exploration of Amanda and Ginn being in the ship. I think Amanda is a fascinatingly flawed character with a lot of potential that is never realized, because of the aforementioned bad writing issues. Stop focusing on her obsession with Rush and explore her general hedonism! (I'm thinking of the episode of SG1 where Daniel gets addicted to the sarcophagus as a model... give us more of Amanda being obsessed with being able to "feed herself" alien strawberries or whatever, and she makes it a problem for the whole crew because she's stopped caring about fixing the ship.) If I'm not going to complain about needing to rewrite the entire arc that ended them up there, I think the show cuts off the idea of Ginn and Amanda being "spirits in the ship" right when it could have gotten interesting, not that that is unusual for Stargate. We can't have nice things 😭 and I would have liked to explore that more as a plot point, and also had more for Eli and Ginn to do. The whole "together but apart" and "dead but still here" thing is super tragic, and I would have liked to get more of it explored through a lens that wasn't just Amanda's obsession with Rush.

Fandom ask, SG1 or SGA (or both 💜 since they crossover sometimes)

I will do SGA, since I watched it more recently.

Who I want to be friends with: Teyla! Teyla Teyla Teyla. She would be so fun. We could go to Kernels and she could get all the popcorn. She could teach me to meditate. We could do yoga together. And! She would have more women friends. That woman deserves to talk to more women.

Who I don’t like: As a character? Kavanagh, in a shocking twist that surprises nobody. He's just so obnoxious. Sir who allowed you to be on this expedition.

Overrated character: Todd. He's fine, I don't hate him or anything, but I don't get the hype. But there are many things I just don't get so...what can you do.

Underrated character: This fandom does not appreciate Elizabeth enough, but neither did the show. She did a negotiation blindfolded and by herself and won! She's cool as hell! But they go and do that to her????? In front of my salad! And then they replace her with Sam, who I love, but then they didn't....use her in any interesting fashion.

I am also a part of the Jennifer Keller Support Squad, and I hate that they made her Rodney's Nagging Girlfriend instead of letting her be the smart, capable woman rising to a challenge.

Who I LOVEEEEE: Ronon! There is just so much potential in his character and his story. Warrior poet, having his sense of self gradually eroded? Having to rebuild that, bit by bit, once he found a place he was safe? The Spock dilemma! When you find your people again, where does your responsibility lie?

Who I would give a hug:

Aiden. That boy deserves a hug, a hot beverage, and a narrative that doesn't shaft him. He could have been deeply compelling, but they decided to write him off as a drug addict instead.

Summary:

John is leaning in, head bent low towards the curly-haired guy he’s talking to. Rodney is a little annoyed instantly because hey, what’s so important they would need to whisper it? Why isn’t John pulling him into this?

And then John reaches out and pulls the other guy in. Over the table, by his neck, and suddenly this other guy is kissing John.

Or: With DADT gone, John starts kissing guys. Rodney is (very mysteriously!) not having a great time.

And now I am rewatching Stargate Atlantis. Because why not? It was a great show, and I have loved those characters from the start.

I know it had its problems then. And it’s going to have even more problems watching it from a “now” perspective. Just the idea of the expedition “now” has a lot of colonialism tones and shades. And the way so many of the episodes, specially in season one, we’re handled makes it even more so.

Watching these episodes again makes me want to start writing SGA fic.

Fix it pieces. Trying to undo some of the bullshit that set such an uncomfortable tone. These are good characters, and they are mostly good people, and they were done so wrong with some of those scripts and stories.

Atlantis never sent the “Letters from Pegasus” data burst. I have always loved the idea of an independent Atlantis. Self sufficient and shrugging off the Earth-Superiority complex the SGC and IOA and World Powers have. Integrating themselves into Pegasus culture, developing their own social norms and traditions.

And how would all that look? Would they have taken the ZPM from 677’s kids - brought them all back to Atlantis - when the Wraith came? Would they have pursued The Brotherhood harder for their ZPM? How would their relationship with the Athoseans be different if Elizabeth hadn’t forgotten how to be a diplomat during Suspicion? How would they have survived the Wraith encounter? Would Ford still have gotten addicted to the enzyme and run off? If yes, without Lorne would they still have found Ford and Ronan on the “the sun is a deadly laser” planet?

So many questions!

Info Dump Part 3: Carrot Man! (Part 1)

How did it take me this long to do an info dump on Carrot Man's story?

I only really talked about him in Part 1, and I kinda forgot what I said in that despite just reading it so I wouldn't, so I'm just gonna go over everything again.

Carrot Man's IRL Origins

SGA

Carrot Man's story has it's roots in something I created in 2nd grade. It was the idea for a game that I called "Gameventure", before "Super Game Venture" and finally "Super Game Adventure" or SGA for short. (I was addicted to acronyms as a kid, hence why I called myself "TMH" TheModHead)

The only thing that really stayed the same with SGA through all the years, was that it was a flatformer, with a stickfigure as the main character.

Anyways, SGA is when it finally gets interesting, as I created some characters for it, and wanted to tell some simple stories with each game.

Here's a drawing I made with all the characters a while later. Ignore Potato Man, Carrot Man, that blue thing, and the mug, they weren't part of it at the time. (I just don't have any artwork without them) From left to right, they are: Random Facer, Eanie, Fleepy, Pinky, Bluey, Miney, Floopy, and Pencil Kid.

Anyways, one day, my sister shows me a character she created named "Potato Man", and he fit the artstyle perfectly! So I had this idea that maybe I could make a game with him, and his arch enemy would be "The Uncool Carrot", Carrot Man, whose goal was to be cooler than Potato Man, who was the coolest person in the galaxy. Carrot Man's design is basically identical to how it was when he was originally created. In this series, the SGA characters would occasionally appear, helping Potato Man defeat Carrot Man, or sometimes even being playable characters getting antagonized by Carrot Man.

Now then, for my Freshman English class, I ended up drawing a comic called "Random Facers Random Origins", which explained how Random Facer became part of the SGA crew. I have a digital remake of it that I might release, it's not very good cause I made it before I was good at writing or drawing, but some might find it interesting. (I was going to release it in this post, but Tumblr won't let me attach PDF files). (Also I forgot to mention this, but that mug appears in this comic cause one of my friends, who I had to borrow a marker from, had me create them. Their name is Rootbeer Man in the comic)

In this comic, I introduced a new character, "Magi-Facer", who was the 1-off antagonist. He's the blue thing I told you to ignore. However, I had the idea that, in the next comic, Carrot Man and Magi-Facer would team up! They'd be constantly bickering, only staying together cause of their mutual goal to defeat Potato Man.

I then realized I could have Potato Man team up with Random Facer! And then came a massive change!

Adventures of Potato Man

During my freshman year, I began developing the story more and more, and realized the "SGA Crew" weren't very interesting, so I ended up cutting them down, and focused on Potato Man!

Here's what the crew looked like after this!

Potato Man, Random Facer, Pencil Kid, Rootbeer Guy, Magi-Facer, and Carrot Man!

This version of the story is SO developed! There was an actual story with an ending to it!

I also have a TON of artwork from this era, so here it is!

(I should note that I redacted my name from the last 3, it's especially noticeable on the Space Carrot one.)

Anyways, I forgot to mention that, Carrot Man is a fucking idiot in this version of the story. He's constantly messing up, constantly bickering with Magi-Facer who's just as dumb, and seemingly can't do anything right! However, he does have a dynamic with Magi-Facer. Carrot Man is the one who comes up with ideas, like a mech or a space station, and Magi-Facer uses his magic to make it a reality!

As I developed this version of the story, I ended up focusing more on Carrot Man and Magi-Facer, cause Potato Man is completely mute. I don't know why I did that, and it's a detail that remains in the story to this day for some reason, but this made it hard to make him interesting.

So, the story ended up following Carrot Man and Magi-Facer, two villains who want revenge on Potato Man, turning good, and helping save the last of humanity.

Oh yeah! I forgot to mention a critical part of the lore! And this part is still mostly canon!

Long before the events of the story, the humans sent out Voyager 1, which ended up reaching a highly intelligent race known as the "Pencils" (This was to explain Pencil kid, before turning serious.), they ended up replying, and became friends with humanity, before creating the Galactic Union, uniting other intelligent species in the galaxy. Unfortunately, humanity began to grow lazy. They all decided to stay on Earth, and they polluted the atmosphere. They asked the Pencils for help, and they gave them the tools to help themselves, but they refused. Eventually, they went to war with the Pencils, making both species go extinct, with Earth becoming inhabitable.

Fortunately, 2 Pencils survived! Pencil Kid, and Jeffery Benstalk. Rootbeer Guy found Pencil Kid, and began taking care of him, keeping him secret from everyone else. (I should note, Pencil Kid was mute as well) Jeffery Bentalk lived on an unknown planet, where he made plans to revive humanity.

The reason they hid, was due to unorganized "Space Pirates", who'd potentially kill them. They were also the people Potato Man was fighting prior to Carrot Man and Magi-Facer

Eventually, Jeffery would team up with Potato Man, and later Carrot Man and Magi-Facer as well. They'd then go onto the inhospitable Earth, and find a young child in cryo sleep, they'd then decide that Carrot Man and Magi-Facer should take care of them. They'd then try returning home, realize one of them had to stay, and Jeffery would trick them into leaving him.

End of that version of the story!

This would've been what I wrote, if it weren't for...

TheModSeries

This story is a can of worms I'm not gonna open just yet. Just know, this story let me develop Carrot Man on his own! It gave me an excuse to put him in a show I was watching, and I developed him in that show by himself!

This slowly turned Carrot Man into a serious, intelligent, and stern person. He built robots modeled after himself called "Robo-Carrots", they basically Amazon Alexa if it was an android, and this was before I even knew what those were. You'd say "Robo-Carrot!" and the nearest, non-busy one, would come running up to you, awaiting a command.

Post TMS

This intelligence meant Carrot Man didn't need Magi-Facer anymore, he was dead weight. So I scrapped him!

I then continued to develop the series, but mostly Carrot Man. He was now a genius! And the story was now meant to be a comic series again, so I had ideas for scenarios and such, most of which would never get used.

There was one character however, who actually made it to the current version of the story! One who originates from the SGA time period!

He was: THE DIGITIZER!!

His game was gonna revolve around him turning physical objects, into digital data! I absolutely LOVED his design, so I brought him back! He'd be Carrot Man arch nemesis! He was:

Proxy Swift!

It says design not final on that, but it never changed.

He was a rival scientist, wanting to kill Carrot Man... for some reason I never wrote in this version. He was part of the Space Pirates, who were now organized in this version!

His main weapon was "The Digitizer!", which would send out a beam, that would turn things into digital data, before sucking them up! I didn't develop him much in this stage...

The Adventures of Carrot Man

At some point, I realized Carrot Man was 1000x times more interesting than Potato Man, so I made him the main character.

This version of the story is very similar to the current version, in fact, the previous version of Carrot Man's story falls under this umbrella. As such, i'm not really gonna go into detail.

However, Proxy now started as Carrot Man's best friend, before the Space Pirates attacked the Space Carrot, burned Proxy, and he came back a villain, believing it was all Carrot Man's fault.

This is also the version of the story where Carrot Man burned to death!

This version of the story still had Jeffery Benstalk, and Pencil Kid. After Carrot Man burned to death on the Space Carrot, Jeffery saved him, modified his brain so he'd be hyper intelligent, and sent him back to continue his life. At the end, he'd team up with Potato Man to defeat the head of the Space Pirates, tying into TheModSeries as well! Which I've cut due to scrapping TheModSeries.

Despite having Random Facer and Magi-Facer, this was from this era! I still really liked Random and Magi-Facer, and I'll still occasionally draw them!

Okay, that is a LOT more than I was expecting to write! I think I'm gonna have to make a part 2 of this, cause I'm tired of writing.

1,223,777. Which might be slipping into writing addiction territory.

3. What fandoms do you write for?

Stargate Atlantis, primarily, with a couple for The Magnus Archives, because I recently fell for it headlong.

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

Yes, always. I love comments, they show that people are engaging with the work and I understand and appreciate the effort that it takes to make them. They deserve a thank you. Also, sometimes comments have sparked off an interesting train of ideas, which I love.

6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Probably The nightingale with fethers new depending on which angle you look at it. Or A Short Space of Fair Weather, which is pretty sad.

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Pretty impossible to tell as most of my fics end happily. But There and Back Again has positive outcomes, not just for the protagonists, but for two whole galaxies, so I’m voting that one.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Fortunately not, so far at least.

9. Do you write smut? If so what kind?

Occasionally. It tends to be awkward and laced with humour.

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?

I have one sort of crossover comic, which is SGA meets Lord of the Rings: Of Rings and Ill-Advised Succumbing to Curiosity

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

It seems unlikely

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

No, but would be very happy for anyone to do so.

13. Have you ever cowritten a fic before?

Yes, wrote a couple with @trainofcommand from just having a little fun back and forth on Discord.

14. What's your all-time favourite ship?

McShep.

15. What's a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?

My WIPs tend to be either an aimless few sentences or paragraphs which trail off and lose my interest, or they get finished. I rarely have a plot in mind beforehand, so I don’t really have anything that’s itching to come out.

16. What are your writing strengths?

Humour, I think. I enjoy writing dialogue and having fun with language.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Too many to mention, but I’ll go with plotting. Unless it’s a very short and complete idea, I can’t plot until I’ve written half of something and kind of have to work out a possible direction and wriggle the words around to fit. Often this takes a few goes and lots of reversing and trying a different fork.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

If it works for the fic and you have reasonable confidence in the accuracy, go for it.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

SGA. My Rodney McKay addiction tipped me over the edge from reader to writer and that just kept going. And going.

20. Favourite fic you've ever written?

This one is impossible and very much depends on mood, so I’m going to cheat and list three that come to mind:

A Ragdoll, Badly Stitched: death and grief is a recurring theme in my stuff and this is one of the first which helped me successfully articulate some things about it

How Death Came for Rodney McKay (and why it won’t be doing that again): Death again, but very much in humour mode. I’m pleased with the framing structure.

The Bakery in the Woods I love Fairy tale style stories, both just in themselves and how you can use them in relation to real world issues. This one came together in a way I’m happy with.
