One Patriots legend named Hall of Fame finalist, another snubbed

Wanna hear about the time that a Super Bowl ad I worked on placed in the bottom 5 of USAToday’s AdMeter ranking?
A few weeks before the Super Bowl, one of our clients said he was buying an “excess inventory” ad on The Big Game.
When most advertisers buy a spot on the Super Bowl, they definitely want it to run. With an excess inventory buy, your ad probably WON’T run. The network will show it only when they run out of all the ones they promised to show. Because there’s no guarantee such spots will run, they cost a fraction of what the real spots cost.
I knew a media buyer who regularly bought excess inventory for the 7th game of the World Series for clients knowing that it was likely that there would be a lot of pitchers switched out in the last game of the season with the championship on the line. This savvy thinking got great exposure for clients’ ads at crucial points in these highly-watched games–all at a deep discount.
Many Super Bowls are one-sided blowouts, so the possibility of an excess inventory ad running was a long-shot. Our client knew it would probably not air, but there was no harm in making the gamble.
With the chance of running a spot on the Super Bowl, we begged our client to make something special for the game. He didn’t want to spend money producing an ad that might never run.
The spot he wanted to run was okay. Kind of. And it had already aired a lot.
Without being asked, we brought a bunch of ideas for a Super Bowl ad that would have been inexpensive to make but be tailored better for The Big Game than the leftover he wanted to run. He still didn’t want to spend money making an ad that would probably never air.
But Super Bowl XXXVIII in 2004 was NOT a blowout. A Carolina Panthers touchdown tied the game at 29-29 with 1:08 to play.
Tom Brady drove the New England Patriots down the field within field goal range. With 9 seconds left in the game, the Patriots called a timeout.
Their kicker, Adam Vinatieri, came onto the field. As the teams lined up for the 41-yard field goal attempt, the chatter of 90 million people watching in sports bars and living rooms stilled and they gathered around their big-screen TVs to watch.
Carolina called a time-out to “ice the kicker.”
Just enough time to play ONE commercial.
Right.
OUR commercial.
Very likely the most-watched commercial in the whole game.
Commercial done, the broadcast went back to the game, and Vinatieri made the field goal. With only four seconds left, the Panthers were unable to respond and New England won, 32-29.
I figured we wouldn’t place that high in USAToday’s AdMeter, but I didn’t expect to make the bottom five.
We grumbled that our client should have listened to us and made a spot especially for the Super Bowl.
But the real lesson is that we should have worked much harder to prevent a just-okay spot being in his inventory of spots in the first place.

I love the juxtaposition of this…it absolutely illustrates how much self-control she has to not put him through the uprights like Adam Vinatieri…

Chiefs' Harrison Butker overcomes miss to seal Super Bowl 2023 win
GLENDALE, Ariz. — Harrison Butker grew up an Adam Vinatieri fan, and anyone with a firm grasp of the early Patriots dynasty understood that Vinatieri, the kicker, was always one of the toughest players on Bill Belichick’s team. So there Butker was in the final seconds of Super Bowl 2023, the score tied and the world waiting to see if he could boot the Kansas City Chiefs to a championship. One of…
