day six (!!!!!) of @jasontoddweek2025 - scars - enemy to caretaker - red hood and the outlaws
Jason is late to an outlaws meet up, Kori is concerned.
jason todd & koriand'r, jason todd and & roy harper, (kinda implied) poly outlaws and/or jason todd/koriand'r - sick fic - 1955 words
Koriand’r often worries about her friends, powerful and skilled though they are, the problems they tend to get involved in tend to be the things that require a lot of power and skill to survive. So when Red Hood - Jason - misses an Outlaws get together, an excuse for Roy to show every Outlaw currently on planet every photo and video he’s taken of little Lian since the last meeting, regardless of if said Outlaws have already seen said images, Kori worries.
Jason is strong, this she knows, he is a man of firm principles and brutal strength. Many time’s he’s walked into hell at her side and every time he has more than proven his worth and skill, but an enemy only needs to get lucky once.
“You worried too?”
Roy’s face is downcast, Artemis was in Bana-Mighdall, preparing for a tournament that she had eagerly invited Kori too once it was ready, and according to Roy; Bizzaro was helping one of the Superboys with something off world. She knew they’d been excited to have time to themselves, the three original Outlaws, for all that she would always be grateful to the others for watching Jason’s back when she could not.
“It is… unusual for Jason to not alert us if he is busy. Maybe he is late?” Kori wasn’t very hopeful, it was already almost two hours after the agreed time and Jason was surprisingly punctual despite what it might seem.
“Maybe.” Roy sounded skeptical, he knew Jason as well as she did. If he was merely running late he would’ve let them know somehow, Kori floated behind Roy’s shoulder as he checked Gotham’s news, automatically tilting his phone so she could see easily. It was a surprisingly quiet day for Gotham, a small shoot-out that had been stopped before Signal could even arrive on scene and a car accident with a missing driver and no known injuries were all that she could see. Roy made a soft frustrated sound at the back of his throat.
“We should go check on him.”
“If he’s fine, he’ll be pissed we just showed up.”
“If he is not, then he will be grateful. He may need us.”
Roy cursed, stomped over to his quiver and bow. “Alright,” He climbed out of the window, domino mask affixed, “Let’s go Princess Express.”
Kori bundled him into her arms, cradling Roy close to her chest. Her body heat would help prevent the cold air from chilling him while she flew. Gotham was almost 3 hours away by plane, without a passenger it would only take minutes for Kori to get there. With Roy it would take at least 40 minutes. She hoped that Jason could hold on, that whatever had delayed him wouldn’t end in them finding a body.
She is a shooting star, fire and speed as she cuts through the sky towards Gotham. Roy curls up, tucking his face into her chest to keep it safe from windburn. She’s flying fast, faster than she usually would with a human, but if it’s uncomfortable, Roy doesn’t say anything.
Gotham, as they approach it, is a strange place, the brightest lights hidden amongst the smog and shadow. Something about it’s winding streets and stark buildings calling to the best and worse in a person. Kori has always been intrigued by it, the juxtaposition of cruelty and kindness it’s filled with.
Carefully, she alights on a rooftop. The bats will be aware of her soon, if Oracle hadn’t already spotted them flying in. Something to be handled later.
“Can you find him?”
Roy was already at work, tapping away at his phone to remote access the emergency beacon he’d added to Jason’s helmet. Concern carved a furrow in his brows, deep enough that she could see it through the mask.
“Got him.” He was already stepping back into her arms as he spoke, arm reaching up to loop securely around her neck. “He’s at the safe house, the nice one.”
“Then he may be well.” Despite her words Kori couldn’t help but doubt he was. Jason usually didn’t bring ‘work’ back to his nicer safe house, keeping it for quiet days or for when the Outlaws were there to hang out. But if something had happened… Or someone found out who was under the red helmet and followed him home.
Kori grit her teeth, well then she would simply have to show every puffed up thug in this city exactly what happened when someone messed with one of Starfire’s friends.
Kori landed on the roof of Jason’s safe house, hovering to allow Roy to reach down and disarm the traps that webbed over the entire roof.
“Good sign.” Roy muttered, Kori agreed. If something had happened, they hadn’t entered or left via the roof.
All of the Outlaws had keys to Jason’s safe house, a fact she and Roy had silently agreed to never share with Dick. Both to prevent an melodramatic outburst about not having a key of his own, as if any person trained by Batman needed a key to enter a building, and to stop Dick from wailing about how they’d been ‘his friends first, hang out with me more.’ As if Kori didn’t go to Dick’s apartment whenever she missed him while on planet and Roy didn’t have a weekly video call blocked out just to talk with Dick.
The stars save her from the unnecessarily complicated care and handling of a Gotham vigilante.
———
Jason’s door was still locked when Roy carefully tired the handle, frowning they exchanged glances. The tracker was in Jason’s helmet and it was rare that Jason ever went out without it. Had something happened to him as Jason and not Red Hood?
Roy unlocked the door, reaching out to disarm the trap in the door jam as he swung it open.
“Jay?” Kori remained tense, energy pooled in her hands - ready to fire if needed. “You in here man?”
The living room looked clean, flowing into the kitchen which had a pile of dishes in the sink. A pot was left on the cold stove, remnants of food dried to the sides of it when Kori floated over to check.
“Clear over here,” Roy said quietly, “You got anything Sta-“
Both of their heads snapped up as violent coughing echoed from deeper in the apartment. Roy raced down the hallway, ripping open the door and they tumbled into Jason’s bedroom. Loud, hacking coughs emanated from the pile of blankets on the bed. Roy let out a relieved laugh, leaning back into her for a moment.
“Damn Jay, you couldn’t of texted or something?”
The blankets shifted as they approached and Jason appeared, face flushed and hair sticking up. He shook from the force of his coughs before peering up at them blearily.
“Wha’? Wha’ are you… doin’ here?” Jason’s voice was a harsh rasp, a scarred hand coming up to rub at his throat.
“You missed pizza night, Kori and I got worried about ya.”
Roy nodded at her, ducking around her to head to the bathroom. He would handle finding Jason’s first aid kit, she would handle Jason.
“I am glad to see you Jason, even if you are in poor health.”
Roy clattered back into the room, jabbing a finger in Jason’s face. “Stop leaving knives on your bathroom floor, you’re gonna wake up to piss in the middle of the night and cut your feet.”
Jason frowned, “Not my dad.” He croaked out, flopping back onto the bed and trying to smack Roy’s hands away as he loomed with the thermometer, “Fuck you.”
“Dude you wish I was your dad.” The device beeped as Kori ducked out of the room, cool water and maybe also a warm drink. That was soothing when you were ill, she was pretty sure.
Kori set the sink to fill while she gathered her supplies, there was little food in Jason’s cupboards but there was a small box of tea and some honey. She washed the dishes while the kettle boiled, listening to the sounds of Roy and Jason bickering with warm fondness. Now that she knew Jason was safe, the apartment felt warm, as dear as any of her friends dwellings. Draining the sink and wiping her hands, Kori prepared the tea, with plenty of honey, and filled a glass from the pitcher in the fridge.
“Kori keep an eye on the our hooded wonder, okay?” Roy jerked his thumb back at Jason’s slumped over body as he coughed again, “Some idiot thought he could ‘power through’ a cold without any medication and now is being a big stupid baby about everything.”
She didn’t even try to smother her grin, “I will do my best, return swiftly my friend.”
From behind Roy, Jason muttered, “Mean to me.” In a wounded voice, Roy grinned, eyes sparkling with laughter and walked out. She could hear the thumps in the living room that meant Roy was dumping his gear, leaving behind Arsenal to simply be Roy.
“I’ll send the all clear to O as well!” He called back, “Fuck dealing with the Bat Brigade when jay’s already sick.”
Thank all the stars for Roy, she would’ve forgotten and then tried to attack who ever came to check on them without thinking about it. “Thank you Roy!” She called as the front door opened and Roy yelled something back, already distracted.
“Star,” Jason croaked from the bed, lifting an arm up towards her, “’M cold.”
Beneath her palm his skin felt flushed, fever slick and warm. “You are not my friend.” She assured him, “You merely feel that way.”
She remembered then Dick and Roy would get colds, it was strange. To see such formidable fighters brought low by illness. She had been scared, the first time Dick got sick while with the Titans, convinced he was going to die. But that had been long ago, she had weathered many cold seasons and would weather many more. Bland, easy to digest meals; water and rest would heal Jason as surely as it had healed Dick and Roy. Her eyes narrowed at the mound of blankets a pouting Jason had curled back under, there was something… about sick humans and blankets…
With a gasp, Kori darted over to the bed and ripped the blankets away. “You will overheat Jason!” She cried urgently, “No more blankets!” Jason looked at her, eyes wet with betrayal. She had seem him beaten, tortured and near death and never had she seen such a heartbroken expression on his face.
“I’m cold!”
She gently pet his hair as a few exhausted and overwhelmed tears slid down his face. Even with a runny nose and too pale skin, she took a moment to admire him, still beautiful.
“I will sit with you-“
“’Nd a blanket.” Jason interjected wetly.
“With a single blanket.” Kori agreed, “Until Roy returns with medication and food. And then you will rest. Allow us the honor of caring for you, my friend.”
Jason curled into the curve of her body as she settled on the bed next to him, pressed his wet, flushed face into the hollow of her neck. He would be asleep before Roy returned, she knew.
That was fine, they would wake him for food and care. Tuck him back into bed and watch something, maybe one of the brightly coloured films Roy insisted he watched for Lian but that she knew he secretly enjoyed.
It wasn’t the meeting she thought she’d be having today, she expected more drunkedness, violence or sex, if she was being honest. But her friends were warm and alive and safe at her side, and that was something to be cherish.
