I dont know were to start with this but on Sunday, January 26, 2020 the world lost a living legend by the name of Kobe Bean Bryant. Words cant describe how I felt earlier when I first heard the news. I didnt want to believe it at all, I was praying and hoping that it was all fake. Then Adrian Wojnarowski whos one of the biggest sports reporters dropped his infamous woj bomb...but it was one woj bomb I wish he didnt drop. He confirm that Kobe has passed away in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California. Not only that but his daughter GiGi along with Coach Alltobelli, Wife Keri and daughter Alyassa were also part of the Crash😔My whole body was in shock, like it was numb, I felt cold, and it seem like the world just stop for a moment. It was one of those things that you couldnt believe that it actually happened. Until now, I'm still in disbelief with the news. Anyways, I just wanna share the impact Kobe had on me on as a player/fan of the game.

As a fan growing up kobe was my Michael Jordan of my era. He had the moves like MJ, the swag, and that killer instinct when needed. He would never back down from anybody, he didnt care who and how good you were. He went into every game knowing that he was gonna destroy you or whoever was guarding him. Kobe just had that mentality, like he said before "once you smell the blood, you gotta go in for the kill!" Thats were the Mamba mentality takes over, once he gets into that mode its pretty much GG and your best bet is hoping to contain him. Just ask Alvin Gentry and Jalen Rose, they know about it.

He would also destroy you mentally, and take you out your game. If you were weak, best believe he will expose you and you that against you. No matter how good of player you are, once he got in your head. That was it, he already won before the game even started. He would probably dap you up before the game, have a nice conversation with you, and just catch up. Once tip-off starts though thats it, be prepared because it was going to be a long night of buckets and trash talking.

I always knew whenever Kobe was playing, it was must watch Television. Especially the 2009-2010 season were he had like multiple game winners, but the one that stuck to me the most was the one he hit on Wade and the heat! Down two with like 3-4 seconds left, Kobe hit a One foot leaning to the left Dirk type jumper off the backboard to seal the win for the Lakeshow. Kobe was having a bad shooting night too, he went 3-15 I believe (correct me if Im wrong) but that shot was crazy and the reaction from Flash was Priceless.

A other favorite Kobe moment, actually performance of mine would be his game 6 performance against the Suns in the 2010 Western Conference Finals. Shoutouts to my best friend but man Kobe was giving them the business, shot after shot. Not just your average jumpers but hand in the face contested like crazy jumpers, I remember one he hit on Grant Hill. Grant was playing amazing defense, didnt fall for Kobes pump fakes but somehow Kobe still found a way to score and afterwards gave Alvin Gentry a slap on the butt. Mamba was definitely cashing out that game and that performance will always be one of my favorites.

As a student of the game, watching kobe from his afro days to the switch up from 8 to 24 in the 06-07 season. His game transition pretty well as he got older. When he was rocking 8, his game was mostly based off of athleticism and hot/cold streaks when it came to shooting. Now dont get me wrong his jumper was getting there but it wasnt as consistent when he switch to 24. His defense was good, not great yet but good. Imo he was always a solid defender. He did keep AI in check when they met in the finals in 2001, except that game one. Other then the 3 peat he had with Shaq, and arguably the best duo of time. His most memorable moment though with the number 8, would have to be his 81 point performance against Toronto. The second most points in a game in NBA history and to do it at Staples Center, Amazing!

Imo though when Kobe switch to 24, thats when he peaked and was the best version of himself. thats when his game went to another level. He was more sound on offense and better discipline on defense. from his off season workouts with Hakeem to improve his footwork to endless sideline to sideline shuffles to improve his defense and his fadeway was unguardable. All he needed was a little bit of room to get it off, and no matter how good of a contest you got. if you didnt block it that was it, It was going in. His offense was so smooth and the amount of detail he put into every move was a beautiful thing to watch. Equivalent to the sweet science of boxing! Such a gifted player on both sides of the ball, he was such an enjoyment to watch.

Another thing that is lowkey slept on with Kobe was his defense. We all knew how great of a scorer he was, and didnt pay that much attention to his defense. Honestly, he is probably one of the best on ball defenders of all time. He would fight through screens, switch on everything, and always wanted to guard the teams best player and that right there shows how much he cares about defense. Not only hes clamping up your teams best player but hes also giving you buckets on the other end! He always wanted a challenge and never back down from one.

Lastly before I wrap this up, his work ethic was undeniable. He was never satisfied with himself, he would always work on something until he perfected it. No matter how small or big the challenge was, he was gonna do it and do it right too! The mamba hated failing, his work ethic was shown throughout the years and his game spoke for itself. He earned everything, nothing was giving and unfortunately thats rare to see nowadays.

The game will truely miss you Kobe😔Thank you for all the memories you shared with us, everything you taught us, all your accomplishments on and off the court will always be remembered, but most importantly Thank you for everything you have done for the game. The impact you made on everybody! From all the athletes, celebrities, fans, and people who dont follow the sport like that. They all showing you love, that right there, the impact you made on us is remarkable. A Dad, Husband, Role Model, Friend, and a Legend gone way too soon! “FUCK YES!” You screamed, jumping up from the couch and wildly punching the air in celebration. The Toronto Maple Leafs had just won game 6 with a final score of 1-3, effectively forcing a game 7 and you couldn’t be prouder of your boyfriend and his team. You were a little disappointed that you weren't able to see this game in person, especially given that it was the last home game of the series, but you knew that what you had done instead was more important. You had spent the first period of the game watching from your phone, trying not to yell at the players in the middle of the OB/GYN���s office you were sitting in.

After about a week of anxiously peeing on every drug store pregnancy test you were able to sneak past your boyfriend, you were finally able to make an appointment to have an official test done by actual licensed medical professionals. Unfortunately, however, they weren’t able to get you in until about two weeks later. Which was exactly one day before the first game of the playoffs. It barely took any time at all for you to draw the conclusion that there was no fucking way you were telling William about this now, not during the playoffs. He had more than enough on his plate and, frankly, you were pretty terrified of how he would respond to the news. At least, if you waited until after the playoffs, you would be able to pack up your stuff and leave without it catching the eye of the public. It didn’t seem like a huge possibility that it would actually come to that, but throughout your life, you had learned fairly early to always expect the worst. At your first appointment, you had discovered that you were, in fact, pregnant and had been for almost 2 months. You were honestly blown away that it had taken you this long to notice, but you had missed periods due to stress before and it wasn’t like these past few months were particularly calm, so it kind of made sense. Because of the high-stress nature of your life and the unpredictability of your schedule, your doctor had asked you to schedule a follow-up appointment a couple weeks later in order to form a routine check-up schedule.

The nurse practitioner had given you a weird look when she noticed you watching a hockey game on your phone during the ultrasound, but you weren’t in a position to go around telling stranger that you were pregnant with William Nylander’s child, so all you could do was smile sheepishly and ask for 3 prints of the ultrasound pictures. After your appointment, you had immediately called your two best friends and asked them to meet you at your house to watch the remainder of the game together. During the second intermission, you casually reached into your pocket and nonchalantly laid one of the strips of photos on the coffee table in front of you.  It had taken the two a second to realize what exactly you had just placed in front of them, but once they did the pair were immediately jumping on you and screaming directly into your ear. You laughed loudly as the three of you began to roll around on the floor, shaking each other out of excitement.

“Why didn’t you tell us you had another appointment today? We would have come with you, bitch!” Brooklyn chirped, pushing your shoulder gently but with an ounce of genuine hurt in her eyes.

“I’m sorry! You know I love you guys but… if I cant have Willy there then I’d kind of just rather do it by myself, ya know?” You said with a shrug, looking down at the floor. “Plus, I didn’t want a repeat of last time,” you blushed, remembering the look on the Nurse’s face when the three of you showed up with your hands intertwined, asking for a pregnancy test. In retrospect, the conclusion she had drawn was justified, but the implication of the three of you being in a polyamorous sapphic relationship had become a running joke throughout the past few weeks. The three of you began to settle down as the game continued as you jumped back into your enthusiastic —and occasionally infuriated— commentary.

You smiled as you heard the front door open a few hours later, after the game has concluded and your excitement from the win died off, you and your girls had turned on some mindless reality show and began filling each other in on everything that had occurred in your lives since the last time you all were able to hang out alone together. You quickly untucked your feet from under the couch cushion and moved to get up, letting out an audible gasp as the room started spinning and your legs fell out from under you as soon as you stood.

“Babe!” William immediately rushed over to you, gripping both of your elbows and helping you to the couch with a worried look on his face. “Are you alright? He questioned, “What just happened?”

“I’m sure it was nothing, love, I just stood up too fast, that's all,” you lamented, brushing his hair out of his face and pressing a kiss to his forehead with a soft smile. He let out a sigh of relief and pressed his forehead to yours with a smile as he looked deeply into your eyes.

“Okay,” he breathed, letting his eyes fall shut for a moment before pulling back and pressing a kiss to your nose before turning to greet your guests. As he leaned over to hug Steph, Brooklyn leaned over to whisper in your ear. The issue was— Brooklyn had never really mastered the art of actually whispering anything, in fact, you were pretty sure her voice was louder whenever she tried to whisper.

“Are you sure it didn’t have anything to do with th-“

“Brooklyn!” You yelled, quickly cutting her off before she could ruin everything.

“shit,” Steph said from your other side, realizing the weight of what Brooklyn may have just done.

“Anything to do with what?” William questioned, furrowing his eyebrows as he turned towards you.

“The Chinese food we ordered!” You hurriedly supplied, gesturing to the leftover takeout containers on the coffee table. “We tried a new place and I was pretty sure the Crab Rangoon tasted funny,” you shrugged, hoping that he would believe your lie.

“What are you talking about?” He said, even more confused now. “We always get Wall of China,” he spoke, picking up the bag that was resting on the edge of the table. The second the bag left the table however, William froze and stopped speaking.

“…Willy?” You questioned, unsure of what would cause him to react in such a way. It took you a few more seconds until your eyes flickered down to where he was staring and you caught sight of the rope of pictures you had left sitting there, out in the open, in the middle of the living room. ‘Fuck,’ you thought, ‘fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck’, you repeated. There was no way you were going to be able to get out of this now. Your fucking name was on the top of the pictures, for fuck's sake.

“Will…don’t freak out,” you spoke gently, stepping closer to him and reaching out to lay your hand on his shoulder. As soon as your fingers got close enough to brush the fabric of his suit, however, he violently jerked away from you with a betrayed look in his eyes. You saw your friends discreetly move towards the front door out of the corner of your eye as William continued to back away from you.

“Don’t- Don’t freak out? Are you fucking kidding me?! That's all you have to say to me right now?” He questioned wildly, his features becoming contorted with anger. “You’re fucking pregnant. And you didn’t tell me. You’re fucking pregnant enough to have pictures and go to appointments and tell your fucking friends and you didn’t FUCKING TELL ME?” He screamed, spit flying from his mouth as he threw the pictures back down onto the coffee table, raking his hands through his hair violently while spinning around the room, trying to look at literally anything except for you right now.

“William I just didn’t think it was the right ti-“

“That's not your place to fucking decide, (Y/N). Its my fucking kid too and I had right to figure out the moment you did! I can't fucking believe you!!” He continued yelling, this time stalking closer to you until he was close enough to you that you could feel the air punctuating every word as he screamed into your face.

“This is exactly why I didn’t fucking tell you, you asshole!” You screamed right back, unwilling to let him try to demean you for doing what you thought was best. “I knew you were gonna fucking react like this and I didn’t want to have to deal with packing up all my shit while you were in the middle of fucking playoffs! I thought this was the goddamn last thing you needed on your plate right now but ex-fucking-scuse me for actually thinking about anyone other than myself for once! Maybe you should take notes, jackass.” You finished, punctuating the end of your argument by slamming your shoulder into his as you moved to the kitchen to grab your keys so you could go to a friends house for the night. You whirled around as you felt his hand encircle your wrist, immediately ready to stand your ground. The look on William’s face had you faltering and the fire immediately left your eyes as you noticed the tear running down his face.

“p-packing up…?” He questioned softly, “you- you’re leaving me?” His voice broke as he forced out the sentence, each word punctuated with a sob as additional tears streamed down his face.

“Baby,” you started, feeling the walls you had forced up start to cave as you watched your boyfriend try, in vain, to force himself to stop crying, only succeeding in working himself up further. “Only if that's what you want.” You finished lamely with a shrug, unsure of where this was going.

“Wh-Why would I want you to leave?” His tears ceased as confusion took over his soft features once again.

“Cause! You’re 21! You’re at the pinnacle of your career! You barely have time to breathe let alone for me and a fucking baby, William. It wouldn’t be fair to you, or to the kid, to force either of you into that,” You took a breath to calm yourself down. “I know what it feels like to have a dad that doesn’t wanna be there. And I know what it feels like to have a mom that doesn’t have time for you,” your voice thickened despite how hard you were trying to force back the tears you could feel approaching. You rolled your shoulders back and removed your wrist from his grip, you made eye contact with him and prepared yourself for what was to come. “I know what that feels like and I swear to god I will never put my kid through that. Ever. Regardless of what it costs me,” you said firmly, desperate to hold onto what little composure you had left.

“our,” William said, collecting your hands into his once more, despite your efforts to pull away.

“What?” You questioned, not understanding what he was trying to say.

“you said ‘my kid.’ It's not just your kid, its out kid. And I’m not going to put our baby through that either, regardless of what it costs me,” he insisted, pulling your hands to rest on his chest as he wrapped his arms around your waist. “I’d give up the Leafs. I’d give up hockey. I’d give up breathing. Fuck, (Y/N). I love you. And I love our baby. And no matter what happens or what comes, nothing is going to change that. Ever.” He insisted, pressing a kiss to your forehead as he used his thumb to wipe away the tears that had begun to slide down your face.

“I love you too,” you laughed through your tears, your heart filling with relief that you were lucky enough to have fallen in love with a human being as genuine and kind as the one standing before you.

“and we love you,” William spoke, moving your joint hands to rest just above your belly button.

“That we do,” you whispered quietly, stroking your hand through his hair as his thumb rubbed circles into your stomach.

Please don't start your season without a regulation win in more than 20 games again. A healthy Antti Raanta will make you way more competitive.

Boston Bruins

That top line is going to be the best part of this team. It would be a shame if Tuukka Task were to regress this season. A real shame....

Jeff Skinner, Jack Eichel, and Ramus Dahlin the best defensive prospect you've had in decades. Look out, the climb from rock bottom has begun.

Calgary Flames

So you trade Hamilton for a younger still developing defenceman Noah Hanifin and forward Elias Lindholm. Then you guys decided to hire Bill Peters. The Hurricanes called: they don't want there old coach back.

Carolina Hurricanes

Last year the Hurricanes under achieved, but the expectations were way to high for a team full of very young guys. This year the expectations are way to high, but are slightly justified.

Chicago Blackhawks

Is Corey Crawford still suffering Vertigo? Yes? Well then the Blackhawks aren't a playoff team. Unless Seabrook has a bounce back from last season, and Toews remembers how much he's being paid. The dynasty is on hiatus.

Colorado Avalanche

Nathan MacKinnon is the best player on this team. You better make sure you remember that Avs. Cause, you'll need his to follow up that last season's monster performance; to get into the playoffs.

Columbus Blue Jackets

Sergei Bobrovsky is the best player on this team. The most important player on this team. The reason this franchise is even relevant. Make sure you extend him. You can't afford to lost him. YOU. CANT.

Dallas Stars

New coach, and eight more years of Tyler Seguin. This team more than anything needs a balance of strong forechecking, puck moving defenseman, and Ben Bishop to stop getting hurt.

Detroit Red Wings

Ken Holland needs to just tell Red Wings fans he's rebuilding. With Zetterberg done for good. You better hope Larkin, Mantha, and Athanasiou make major strides this season.

Edmonton Oilers

Get McDavid some fucking forwards that can skate and shoot! And find someone who will take the Lucic contract. He needs to go. Oh! And get Talbot a actual back up too! That's literally all y'all need! (Maybe another defenseman won't hurt)

Florida Panthers

Start the season strong Panthers. Start the season with a winning record in October, and you might be consistent enough to make the post season. You've got the piece. Now get your shit together.

Los Angeles Kings

This team is old, big, and slow. A perfect team for the fast paced moder NHL! This team can still make the playoffs with Quick in net. But they really need some quality skating youth.

Minnesota Wild

Is Devan Dubnyk still your goalie? Yes? Then you a playoff bubble team congrats. This team feels fractured, veterans on their last few years, mild aged guys that overachieved, and young guys that are unproven. This will be an interesting year in the state of hockey.

Montreal Canadiens

This team has no natural scorers. The best center they're hoping for is a first round draft pick in Jesperi Kotkaniemi, who btw is 18 years old. Because this worked out so well before.... *Cough* Galchenyuk! *Cough* Carey Price will have it play like 2014 if they have want even a chance at the playoffs.

Nashville Predators

Pekka Rinne isn't getting any younger. While he defied his age last year. The Preds window of cup contention only stays open, if he plays at this ability again. Even with the solid defensive core the team has.

New Jersey Devils

Unless Taylor Hall has another Hart trophy winning season and Corey Schneider becomes the solid goalie that this team needs again. Y'all are missing the playoffs. It's that fucking simple.

New York Islanders

Mat Barzal is your future. That's the only bright spot for this team. Good luck trying to fill two areas this season with a bad hockey team, with no playoff hopes anymore.

New York Rangers

Admitting you have a problem is the first steps. The Rangers gave their fans a heads up that they closed the door on cup contention for a rebuild. A smart move. It a shame for the current fan base. The question remains. What happens to Henrik Lundqvist?

Ottawa Senators

This team is going to suck... No buts, ands, or ifs about it! You have a unintimidating forward core, a paper mache defense, and a goalie who use to good. This team is the Miami Marlins of hockey. Pathetic...

Philadelphia Flyers

Solid Forward core, up and coming defenseman that look really good. This team should be a playoff team, maybe even a contender- Oh shit your goaltending still sucks and is up in the air? That's a shame huh?

Pittsburgh Penguins

This team has some key injuries to players last season again the Capitals. This season, those players are older, and will have to still play like there younger to try and win a third cup in four years. At least y'all still have Crosby and Malkin.

San Jose Sharks

This team is the true cup contenders of the West. Well until either Vegas missed the post season, or they beat them. Eric Karlsson makes this team a true force of nature on paper. It's good to be a Sharks fan these days.

St. Louis Blues

One point. That's all it took for you to miss the playoffs, after a season of injury bug. Maybe a new season without the injury bug makes you a post season team? *Check the division teams* ok... Maybe a bubble team at best? I'm trying to be positive Blues fans. I'm trying.

Tampa Bay Lightning

This team will make it back to the playoffs. What the Lightning want to avoid is doing what they did against Washington in games 6 and 7. Avoid that and you'll do fine. Go Rang- I mean Bolts!

Toronto Maple Leafs

John Tavares, Mitch Marner, Austin Matthews. Three names, that have given the city of Toronto more hope of winning the Stanley Cup, than any other names in the last 40 years. If you can maybe get some better defenseman. This teams a cup contender. What a strange time it is.

Vancouver Canucks

Every sign at Rogers arena should say! Still Rebuilding. Come back next year. The Canucks have good pieces, but still need a bit more to make a new machine. They're on the right track. It just not this year for a completion date.

Vegas Golden Knights

After shocking the hockey/sports world, (And pissing off cry baby fans bases across the NHL) The Golden Knights lost some piece, the replaced them with players that are slightly younger, but just as good. Expect youth to step up and take this team to back to the top. Or they regress dramatically and they miss the playoffs because they over achieved hard last season!

Washington Capitals

The defending Stanley Cup champion Capitals! Will make the playoffs again, since they're basically the same team. Winning it again, is whole other issues. The team has remained relatively the same. The other teams in the division/conference didn't. Good luck champs.

Winnipeg Jets

The Jets were a very solid team last year. Excellent forwards, great defenseman, but the thing that has propelled this team into cup contention; goaltending. Connor Charles Hellebuyck is your Carey Price. Do. Not. Over. Work him. The team has grown a proper defensive responsibility. Rest won't kill the guy. Trust me. When the playoffs come. It'll be worth it.

Hi, goodmorning! 💕 I hope youre okay and also haven't traveled to France to k*ll the whole OGC Nice team especially the defense apart from Kasper. 😬 I still only know the result but thought maybe I should start watching these matches because I’ve stopped being superstitious or rather believe I’m good luck these days instead of bad. 🤪 Last week I watched the Inter vs Lazio Rome match because I wanted to see Romagnoli’s new team trash Inter altho I didn’t really believe it but then thats exactly what happened! 😁😁 So I’ll try and watch the next Nice matches and hope it’ll help it’s also early in the season still so maybe theyll manage to steady themselves. 🤞

For Milan I will just shut up from now on, be careful what you wish for I guess because the line up for todays match was just announced and Sandro is not in it however, hes on the bench so no sexy glasses for us, this is not a good compromise! 😐 Unless he wants to play with them which would be fine with me but I dont think its safe. 😆 The good news is that Simon is starting together with Fik in defense and I’m looking forward to that so much I’ve never seen them play together and apparently they were great last season. Im also so happy for Simon he was constantly posting about how much hes looking forward to playing again so they absolutely need to win and make sure he gets a good first match back!

You dont want to watch full matches tho, the difference in quality between the MLS and the top Europe leagues is crazy! None of the teams would survive in Serie A or Premier league. 😅😅 Yeah the problem with football is you cant just watch one team or maybe players you like because you also need to keep track off all the context like the leagues and cups there playing in and players keep transferring to other clubs or there in the same club but then play against each other with their national teams or from the same country and then their teams face each other in the league 🤪🤪..its all a big mess and I love every thing about it!! Most of the time atleast. 🤣 x

I was rather out of it yesterday and didn't manage to watch that game but it's probably for the better because they would have lost if I watched I'm certain 😭 I miss watching Simon play and I miss watching Milan play but I remember the last game I tuned into to they literally conceded not even 2 full minutes after I did that so... I don't want to risk that again.. I'll just catch up with the matches after they happen. Now Juve? That is the club to watch for me. Everything seems to be going on with that club... and I love drama so.. gotta keep an eye on them again 😏😂

Is Zion really that much of a "cant' miss" No. 1 overall pick?

Is it a concern that he couldn't lead his team into the Final 4?

Sam: It would be a good study to compare the NCAA tournament success versus NBA career success. It's hardly an indicator, no offense to Ryan Arcidiacono, who was an NCAA tournament most outstanding players for a title team. Certainly, there were great winners like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (nee Lew Alcindor), Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Walton, Earvin (Magic) Johnson, Isiah Thomas and Hakeem (nee Akeem) Olajuwon. And guys who dominated the tournament like Jack Givens, Tony Delk and Mateen Cleeves. Kevin Durant, James Harden and Paul Pierce were out in the second round, Ben Simmons and Paul George never even made the tournament and even though Michael Jordan's shot won a title, his junior year his North Carolina team didn't get to the Final Four. So we won't hold that against Zion.

You mean a can't miss player like Greg Oden, Markelle Fultz or Joe Barry Carroll? There's no such thing as can't miss. Though the large majority of overall NBA No. 1 picks have had good careers, if not always superstar. Which is the "can't miss" question on Williamson. Someone and likely several in the draft will be All-Stars, though team building is about getting that one star. The 76ers have made some really good deals and other drafts, but without Embiid they're still about a .500 team. Since I've been following the draft starting in the early 1960s, I'd say Zion's in the top 10 of most hyped players. I'd probably put him after Kareem, Magic, Olajuwon, Walton and LeBron. And in a group with Oden, Shaq, Patrick Ewing and maybe Elvin Hayes or Tim Duncan. Cazzie Russell is just on the edge. Most, obviously, went onto big careers, and Zion should also. Though Walton's and Oden's were sidelined by injury, and Williamson does put a lot of torque on his body. Ewing never led his team to a title even as a Hall of Famer. It still requires luck after lucking into the No. 1 pick.

More than ever if we get the no 1, I'd trade it. I really don't want Zion. A lot of these kids look awesome against the other kids, they won't against an NBA talent. Maybe he will be as good as this generation gets. But I remember everybody was hot and heavy for Eddy Curry, and I'm wondering, "he can't even beat high School kids for the State Championship, let's get real". I know we need a point, and a shooting /scoring defensive All NBA, Klay Thompson, or a realistic version of him.

Sam: I believe some personnel people have doubts about how Zion will hold up and where he fits at his size. But it would take the boldest and most secure executive in history (Pat Riley? Popovich? Red Auerbach?) to pass on Williamson, especially since the presumed No. 2 pick is a late blooming point guard who we're not sure could bench press a rack of basketballs. Zion has been the media story of college basketball and, at the very least, would be the best merchandise and ticket seller to come along in years. There probably isn't a team business and marketing department that would let him pass if only for the media coverage the team would get for the next six months. ESPN already is interviewing reporters to embed with Zion. I'm guessing, but would not be surprised. That alone should equal the value of his contract. You'd be able to make a great trade if you had Williamson, though no one will. I know I'm getting the No. 1 pick right this year in my mock draft. Probably two and three also, but from there I'm done. And probably many teams as well.

Lemon Jr. drives

Now that we are down the season stretch. Which of these young players that are getting time that you would like to see stick on with the Bulls to try to and or make this roster going into next season? Lemon, Jr. Jakkar Sampson, Shaq Harrison, Arch, and TLC.

Thomas Brackeen

Sam: I'd like to see many of them as they are hard playing, good, tough kids. Perhaps one or two will be there. As I noted the other day after the Wizards game, there basically are about 10 Bulls roster spots taken already without any of those guys: Dunn, LaVine, Porter, Markkanen and Carter, basically next season's starting five (if no Zion), and none are playing now. Then there's a potentially decent bench with Valentine, Hutchison, two draft picks and one or two free agents with about $20 million available. And that doesn't include Cristiano Felicio, still under contract, and Robin Lopez, a free agent who could return. Of course, there could be trades. I've been a fan of Walt Lemon's since watching him all season in the G-league, though I suspect the team for now is most comfortable with Arcidiacono and Harrison. But it's possible there will be just one roster spot available since the Bulls like to carry 14 to keep a spot open in case of a trade opportunity. And some of those guys might find better opportunities for more playing time considering the way they've improved as NBA players. I'd say most deserve to be on NBA rosters next season. Most have done a good job with the Bulls in a tough situation and are the kind of players you'd like for your bench.

Goran Dragic drives

I'm a huge fan of team building and unlike most of our fans, actually have patience and see potential in our roster. My biggest fear in free agency this year is acquiring players that may push our young players already on the roster, further down the rotation. There's something to be said for on-job training. Hutch and Valentine specifically. The drop off from the starters to the bench is too dramatic. So I've compromised a list of pieces that I think will fit and compete.

Sam: If I can figure that out, you seem mostly to be looking for the Bulls 2015 roster. Dragic, by the way, has a player option for about $20 million which I assume with his injuries he'll pick up. I would. Been there, done that. I know there's been talk about bringing back many from that ol' gang, like Derrick, Taj, Jo. Dinwiddie recently signed a three-year extension, as I recall. The Bulls still need some veteran guidance in addition to Otto Porter Jr. But when you bring back players you had in more golden times, the tendency is for the community to expect them to be who they were and not who they are. It could change, but I suspect the Bulls will look for younger veteran types like Porter.

Toronto was an enjoyable first Bulls game because of the refreshing team effort and Lemon. You have to like his burst, the way he distributes the ball and his drives to the basket. We don't know if he can shoot beyond eight feet and certainly the league will adjust but for one night he was fun to watch.

Sam: Then he didn't look good, and then Wednesday in Washington he did again. It's difficult to put too much into what goes on these days between teams not playing for anything. But it is something when you can make a winning shot and/or free throws like Lemon did in Washington. It shows more than just about Lemon that there are players—as there are people in all professions—who need a chance, that opportunity often transcends ability. We generally accept that if you have the job or perform, it's because of you and that others would not be able to. It's not necessarily the case, but those who have the positions like to write the narratives. Walt Lemon could have been a rotation regular this season on a dozen or more NBA rosters. He just wasn't because he wasn't before. It's often the flaw of scouting and personnel in many fields. Some people need a chance even though they don't have the appropriate credentials.

The latest collegiate cheating scandal has shined a light on what we all knew, that wealthy and connected people can get their kids into places that assure a foot in the door that others don't have. It's been the great inequity of American society, and many others, undoubtedly. After all, how many of those European queens ever sounded smart? And the kings sounded like absolute idiots. Like so many of these presidents and world leaders with Ivy League credentials. After listening to them, you know they didn't take their SATs.

Guys like Walt Lemon and before him at Windy City, Alfonzo McKinnie, were NBA players. They just didn't have the right resumes, the right college or awards or camps. It's why you so often see scouts travel in packs. If they all make the same mistake, then it's not wrong. That's why so many of these mock drafts you see are consensus. The best way to keep your job is to make sure the other guys see things the way you do. The outlier is the risk taker, and we find so few. Why take a chance on a guy like Walt Lemon if no one else does? Sure, sometimes those guys slip through, and sometimes like with Lemon and McKinnie, they improve with time and experience. Most of us can recognize obvious talent. Guys like Lemon and Sampson aren't All-Star, franchise changers. They actually are like many of us, who could do many of our bosses' jobs better than they do. If only the opportunity. It's the greatest of gifts. Then it's on you. And, really, what more can you ask.

Wendell Carter Jr. looks to move to the basket

You wrote that the Bulls didn't have anything resembling what it would have taken to move up in last year's draft. I found this opinion to be surprising as I thought they could have bested Dallas' offer, though admittedly I wanted them to take Jackson Jr. at the time, not Doncic. I was worried about Doncic's seemingly so-so athleticism, which as you wrote hasn't held him back so far.

Anyway, I thought the Bulls could have offered the #7 pick (Dallas offered #5) and next year's first round pick (same as what Dallas gave up, both are young/bad teams so you'd assume one's 2019 first wouldn't be much more highly valued than the other's). But what I thought could've put the Bulls offer over the top was including the #22 pick used for Hutchison. I suppose Atlanta specifically wanted Young and feared losing him to Dallas if they moved all the way back to #7, but at least that Bulls offer would have been very close to what Dallas offered, right?

Anyway, I hope Carter turns out to be a good one. He is who I wanted them to take if they couldn't move up and hasn't disappointed me so far. Not sure I saw any star potential this year before he got hurt but I didn't expect to.

Cameron Watkins

Sam: I actually think it's possible the Bulls would have been with you and taken Jackson, who also looks like he'll be really good. After all, let's not judge all the drafts after six months. Remember, three months ago Young was a bust. But it's moot because I knew they were trying to move up and couldn't. They hope Hutchison becomes a contributing player, but No. 22 never is quite enough to get you much. They could not beat Atlanta's offer without giving up Markkanen. LaVine coming off knee surgery recovery and as a free agent didn't have as much value even if he could have been traded. We haven't talked about Carter much because he's been gone so long. BO, as it were, Before Otto. And before Lopez' Leap.

But when next season begins—assuming the Bulls don't get the No. 1 pick and Zion says he's a center—Carter will be back starting at center. There are concerns and questions, though there should not be that many as he'll have just turned 20. He really had an impressive (half) season considering he was deferring offensively at the time trying to fit in and going through two coaches in his first season with half the starters out. He had some huge scoring games, several double/doubles, and played with unusual poise. He probably cannot work on his height in the offseason, which has been the main concern as he was overwhelmed at times by the bigger centers. He's said he considers himself more of a power forward. But he is unusually physical for someone his age and has the potential to do so many more things offensively inside and outside. His injury was perhaps the freakiest of the freaky. He probably could trip over someone like that 100 times and reach down to regain his balance and never do that again. It's a setback after playing just a half season and most under a different coach. He'll be the Bulls starting center next season. We're all anxious to see how good he can be. At his age, there's plenty of room for excellence.

Zach LaVine passes the ball

What do you think of Zach Lavine's development as a playmaker in the latter half of this season? In this era of position less basketball it seems like we need a primary playmaker and ballhandler rather than necessarily a point guard, so Zach filling that role well could potentially open up our options in the draft.

Cameron Lam

Sam: I guess it's not so position less if the Bulls need all that. This talk about position-less basketball is mostly a term for playing zones on defense (switching) and players having multiple skills, you know, like they had in the 1960s. The game hasn't changed that much other than the demand for a while to specialize—some dribblers, some shooters and some rebounders—to where now it seems like an innovation to have players who can do multiple things. Players once were supposed to do that because, you know, that was basketball. Sure, most people can do one thing better than other things, but players were once taught to do more things. There were various reasons for specialization, some insidious so you wouldn't have to pay certain players more money since they were, say, just rebounders and not scoring. Clearly, Robin Lopez isn't going to be your facilitator on the fast break. Players do have certain special skills. Zach is a very talented guy, which means he can dribble, he can pass and he can shoot. Imagine that. That's why he has the chance to be a great player. But he does some things better than others. I'd rather see him, at least for now, specialize more as a scorer since he's got an uncanny ability to shoot and get to the basket. So far he's tended to defer when he's had to run the team. But perhaps the biggest issue with a player like Zach now is how long he's been associated with losing. It's the biggest problem with these rebuilding situations. It sounds great to get those lottery picks and build when you've had a run of finishing in the middle. But there's also a line when you expose a player to losing too long. Zach began in a Minnesota rebuilding, got hurt, and came to Chicago in the ground zero of its rebuild. He does seem like a player who cares about winning since he seemed really depressed as the losses mounted into December and January and seemed to recover after the Porter trade and some success. It's a positive that he has multiple talents, but the Bulls still have some needs to address.

Do you think today's NBA players are the laziest defenders you have ever seen ? You only need to look at the steals and blocks per game leaders over the last 45 years to see that the last 3 seasons leaders rank near last in both statistics. You could only imagine MJ's numbers playing against today's NBA defenses.

Adam Palmer

Sam: I hadn't noticed that comparison and I'm not sure if that's an actual defensive measure, though they are lower in both categories. I think a lot has to do, especially with blocks, that there are so many more threes shot and when players go to the basket they'll often pass up a layup attempt to try to assist on a three. Everyone over 40 winces. But the defenses, I will agree, are not always as aggressive individually because the teams play so much switching and zone-like systems, which lead to lazy defensive principles.

Of course, the irony is that in the years you are referring to in the 70s, especially, the NBA was known as a league in which the players didn't play defense. The NBA players can defend better than you think because they are so much more athletic now. But the systems of play, perimeter shooting and load management make it look worse than it is. I plan to try to work "load management" into as many columns as I can since among all the stupid things said in sports, it might be the absolute stupidest. We used to use the term, but it referred more to working with Michael Sweetney.

NCAA: From what I've read, there are absolutely zero one-and-done prospects in the Final Four. I love that. It would be nice if GMs figured out that most college freshmen are not ready to help you win in the NBA. But I'm afraid it's going the other way. We'll soon have 18 year old's coming straight out of high school, which will hurt both the NBA and NCAA. My call would be to go the other way – require 2 years of college or 21 yrs. old. That sets up college as the (slightly) faster route to the NBA, and hopefully would encourage kids to go to school. Or here's another idea: base the rookie contract scale on number of yrs. in school, so that staying in school helps you earn more during your first contract. There's also the idea of paying college players. I'm not opposed, but I wonder if schools can pay them enough to keep them away from the NBA for an extra year or two.

Sam: I've never fully understood why the players' association has been so adamant about helping teenagers leave or avoid school and come into the NBA. I know this lame argument about everyone has a right to earn a living and tennis players can play at 16 and whatever. It's not in the Constitution. I also know you can't be a lawyer at 16. I have some lawyer jokes to use there, but they are lame as well.

The collegiate example this season is an aberration since Duke could have been there and Kentucky has been with a roster filled with NBA-to-bes. Though the point is salient that you can beat those teams more now with experience and savvy. It's why the NBA has taken a step back in quality because so many unprepared teenagers and 20-year-olds have to be on NBA rosters. It's like the old, ridiculous bonus baby baseball rule when a high paid young player had to start on a major league roster. It usually ruined his career, though he didn't have to play. Good luck benching your lottery pick. I don't much care about the NCAA and college since so many of the major universities are a sewer of corruption with either the parents buying their way in or the administrators forcing the kid through easy courses to assure eligibility for sports or even as I've heard from some NBA players keeping kids from taking more sophisticated courses because it takes away from sports training.

The NBA, like any business, should have a right to protect itself from hiring unprepared employees. Sure, some players are ready, but between so many young players breaking down physically because their bodies aren't ready and teams having to go back to so many basics with unprepared players, the game suffers. I'm for extending the waiting period, which obviously is about to go the other way because it seems even the NBA has given in. I know the argument about kids in unfortunate and hardship financial situations and the need to make money, and I'm pleased to see what the NBA is doing regarding the G-league and increasing salaries. If only those kids like in baseball could play there for a few years and learn to play. And perhaps make Hoffman Estates a destination for other than the Poplar Creek Buffalo Wild Wings.

As we all seem to be focusing on the upcoming draft and this is assuming the lottery falls in standing order with the bulls picking number four.

My thought is that Jarrett Culver from Texas Tech would be a good fit with the rebuilding core, if... LaVine is pushed back over to point. Everyone is looking for a scoring point guard who can distribute as well, surely he fits the bill and Culver would be a very good 3 and d slashing guard alongside him.

Sam: Ooops, I just dropped Zach above from point guard responsibilities. Trying not to contradict myself, Jim Boylen has employed some sequences with different players handling the ball into the scoring area. Many teams do so. You don't have to have an exclusive point guard. Steph Curry is Golden State's point guard, but Green and Durant do plenty of playmaking. OK, Green. I believe Culver still is playing, so we can both scout him. I remember last year the 3-D guy to get was Mikal Bridges. It seems like it's been an adjustment for him. Though I'm not sure Booker will let him have the ball. It seems the first three picks in the draft will be in order Zion, Morant and Barrett, the latter because it seems he'll just figure a way to score. From there it seems, at least for now, that someone will like someone at 5 who someone else will see at 12. But that's the way Donovan Mitchell gets to 13. You have to pick right and be fortunate. The Bulls clearly need three-point shooting perhaps as much or more than any team in the NBA. So he could work.

I am sure we will add a quality player as long as we stay in the top 5.

Lots of draft experts seem to be down on RJ Barrett. I have not seen him play a lot at Duke, but he seems to have decent physical tools, comes from a strong basketball background, is competitive and has been winning at all levels. To me this feels like a case of everyone expecting him to be the best player in his class, which he was not and now everybody is extra negative about him. What is your take?

Sam: Barrett is the tough call for me, and as I said above I expect he'll be taken third. I haven't been that impressed watching him because he's not super explosive, but we all said that about that Doncic guy. He seemed to figure out a way to score. And he seems to know how to make plays. The league likes explosive players for their star potential. But then you can get someone like James Harden, who just knows how to score. Barrett looks like he'll figure a way.

LeBron James and Lonzo Ball

The television program I was watching this morning while exercising asked the question, "Is Zion the best Duke player ever?" ......huh? he doesn't have a midrange jumper. He brain-fades on defense and it hurts his team. BTW, nothing personal aimed at Williamson, who seems to be an okay kid. Also on the LeBron Channel, saw an interesting graphic. Did you realize that Jordan never missed a post-season as a Bull? Comparison to LBJ might not be fair (different types of players in different eras), but he asks for these when he declares himself the best of all time, which he has. Come to think of it, I don't remember Magic or Bird or the Doc ever missing a post-season. West? Wilt? Oscar? Kareem missed one season, but he played until he was in his early 40's plus the year he missed he was league MVP - I'd say that's a competitive guy. Not buying the idea that LBJ walked into a lousy Cavs team as an 18 year old. For one thing, no one made him skip Ohio State. For another, the Bulls team Jordan joined had big time problems which Jordan will acknowledge if you ask him. Jordan didn't take days off. He busted his butt dragging some serious bozos into the post-season. I'd add here that he didn't have roster input, otherwise Walter Davis and Johnny Dawkins would have been Bulls. Jordan took the lemons and made lemonade. That's what great players do. Players today often mind their personal corporations, frequently reverting to their AAU roots as they seek to play with their buddies. Jordan wasn't allowed to play with his buddies and built Jumpman/Air Jordan anyway.

None of this makes LBJ any less a player. LBJ is the best player of his generation. Hall of Fame penthouse with Kareem/Jordan/Wilt/EJ/Bird/Oscar/Russell? he takes pre-season pretty indifferently, takes personal days off in-season and then there's this. Plus he walked into a turn-key situation NBA-wise. I think that Kobe has missed the playoffs, too. These guys get their own tier with Hakeem, Ewing, Iverson, Karl Malone and Barkley, which isn't bad company. Of this lot, LBJ might be top dog though Kobe has more rings, Malone's stats are in important areas somewhat better, and Hakeem produced head-and-shoulders the very best basketball of any of 'em when he had all of his game working.

Sam: It is what LeBron brings on himself with some of those pronouncements. I guess part is getting swept up in that, but one thing with Jordan was he never declared himself better than greats. I remember when Julius Erving came to Chicago Stadium for the last time in what the media was calling a passing of the torch. Jordan was gracious in suggesting no one would do the things Dr. J did. It's somewhat inaccurate, of course, to compare the eras since Jordan the season he was hurt made the playoffs with a 30-win team (and then scored 63 in the playoffs and was swept). I'm sure the Lakers would have made the playoffs if LeBron didn't miss a month hurt and then sabotage the rest of the season with the Anthony Davis gambit, which he likely wouldn't have if he didn't get hurt and desperate. This is one debate that is never ending. But will anyone ever believe in 20 years either was better than Zion?

Kobe Bryant and Tim Duncan

So let me start by saying that Kobe is a great player. Having said that, I truly don't understand how anybody can look at his career numbers and put him in the same conversation as MJ and Lebron, just like I wouldn't put Iverson in the same conversation as Kobe. But even beyond that: the guy was an incredibly difficult teammate. How the heck is it that he's become sort of an elder statesman now quoted all over the place? If people want quotes from a 5-time champ on being a leader or whatever, you could ask Tim Duncan.

You had to feed your hockey addiction so you found yourself at knights games where you’d be forced to see Mitch. To add to that, you’d see him around town all the time also. You finally thought you’d catch a break when you were accepted to a Uni in Toronto. You’d get to see Dylan and Connor and avoid Mitch easier when they were there for games. Those first couple of months before the draft were pretty lonely. You’d seen Connor brown around town a couple of times and remembered him from when he was playing with the Otters. You and connor got on pretty well and he was from Toronto so he helped you find your feet in Toronto, which was awfully nice of him. Then Mitch went and got himself drafted to Toronto, much to your distain.

So know here you were, with 80% of your close friends playing hockey because Connor McDavid knew everyone and approaching strangers was a terrifying prospect to you. Besides hanging out with the leafs rookies would have been a great time if Mitch hadn’t been one of them. You were currently at one of the boys places, laughing as they all argued while playing NHL17 and Brownie shuffled about in the kitchen looking for food.

“MITCH!” you yelled as he went to score, just because you couldn’t resist pissing him off. The act of doing so, you must admit, was way too easy to do and also way too much fun.

You both stood there staring at each other wide eyed for a moment. There was a slight headache blossoming beneath your temple. You wanted to scream at him. HE CARED ABOUT YOU. You hated him for it. Hated yourself even more for wanting it. You saw his deep inhale as if time had suddenly slowed. The steeling of his nerves before the plunge. This was Mitch Marner, this was not how things were supposed to happen. It was wrong. You hated him. But then, it was your hands curled round his collar, tugging him roughly down to meet your lips. “Uh, Auston I think.” Connor replied just as you heard Auston whoop triumphantly from the other room. The hockey player in question walked happily in to join you just a few moments later with Willy sulking behind him and Zach laughing at the both of them.

“Looks like we have a winner.” You smirked and Auston nodded.

“Wills went down 2 nil with out you there to help him cheat.” he informed you triumphantly.

You rolled your eyes and glanced at Mitch who didn’t seem as angry about his loss as he had when it had first happened. Connor and Auston exchanged looks and you coughed awkwardly. “Uh, we made pasta? Is that okay?”

“’we’?” Connor questioned. “Since when have you and Marns done anything together except argue?”

You glanced at Mitch before answering. “Well, you know they say cooking is very therapeutic.”
