Acing tests like the ACT is an achievement in itself. For those who are unaware, the ACT is a standardized entrance test for applying to colleges in the USA. The higher you score on the ACT, the better your chances are in getting into Ivy League and other prestigious colleges.Months of preparation and hard work all come to fruition on the day of the test. But even after being well prepared, some students may have trouble translating that into marks. There is nothing more exasperating than that.If you suffer from the same, don’t worry.Here are a few things you need to know about the ACT Test and how to crack it: SubjectsThe ACT Preparation Test checks you on subjects like English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science with an additional writing paper, which is optional. The weightage of questions across the different sections are as follows:Subject/SectionQuestions English75Mathematics60Reading40Science40Writing*1 essay question*optional at an additional costTimeThe duration of the test is for 2 hours 55 minutes. Each section carries separate time limits. 45 minutes for English, 60 minutes for Math, 35 minutes each for Reading and Science. For those opting to write the additional section, the writing section has 40 minutes and the total duration of the test would be 3 hours 35 minutes.ScoringThe ACT is scored on a scale from 1 to 36, with 26 being the highest score. Each of the sections/subjects are scored on the same scale from 1-36 and the average of scores for all 4 subjects are compiled to arrive at the final score of the student. There is no negative scoring for wrong answers, so attempting every question is the best option. Also, it is important to note that the marks of the optional writing paper are not taken into account while calculating the final score.Registration & DatesThe ACT Test is held 7 times a year – February, April, June, July, September, October, and December.The registration for the ACT test begins at least 5 weeks before the exam date. The registration can be done online. There is a provision for late registration as well up to three weeks before the exam, for an additional fee.How important is the ACT Test?In the simplest terms, the ACT Test score determines which college you will be eligible to go to. If your aim is to get into the elite colleges and universities of the USA, then you need to double up your efforts and score the highest percentile. The college you get to choose depends on how high your score is for the ACT Test.
