Hey there, fellow learners!
Studying is an essential part of academic success, and everyone has their own methods of studying. While some techniques work better for certain people than others, there are several studying techniques that have been proven to be effective. In this blog post, we’ll be discussing a few of these techniques and how they can be applied to different subjects and learning styles.
Mind Maps: Mind maps are a visual way of organizing information. They allow you to see the connections between different concepts and ideas, making it easier to understand complex topics. Mind maps can be created on paper or using digital tools such as MindMeister or Coggle.
Flashcards: Flashcards are a tried and tested method of memorizing information. They can be used for anything from vocabulary to formulas, and they’re great for testing yourself on the material you’ve learned.
Practice Questions: Practice questions are a useful way of testing your knowledge and understanding of a subject. They can be found in textbooks, online, or created by yourself. Practice questions can help identify areas where you need to focus your studying.
Pomodoro Technique: The Pomodoro technique is a time management method that involves breaking your studying into short, focused sessions, usually 25 minutes each, followed by a short break. This technique helps to improve productivity and focus.
Group Study: Group study is an excellent way to share knowledge and ideas. Studying with others can help you understand concepts better and provide a fresh perspective on difficult topics. Group study can also be a great way to motivate each other and keep each other on track.
Mnemonics: Mnemonics are memory aids that help you remember information by linking it to something else. For example, the acronym HOMES can be used to remember the names of the Great Lakes (Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, Superior).
In conclusion, these are just a few of the many studying techniques that you can use to improve your academic performance. Experiment with different techniques to find what works best for you and your learning style. Remember, consistency is key, and practicing these techniques regularly can lead to better retention, comprehension, and recall of the material. Happy studying!

I don’t really make New Years resolutions, but one thing I really wanted to start doing this year is more active reading. I’ve annotated my nonfiction research books for a while now, but I wanted to start doing this more with my fiction books. Some people would be horrified that I’m writing (in pen!) in my books, but they’re my books and I love the idea of being able to go back and look at the thoughts I had while reading it. It also helps me think a bit more critically about what I’m reading 👍 #bookstagram #books #activereading #annotations #everyheartadoorway https://www.instagram.com/p/BsjPB-Lh7dO/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=ue58wet1cci4

Are you a passive reader or an active reader? Passive readers read words, without thinking — their minds wander, and they cannot remember what they have read. Active readers think critically about the author’s ideas. They are more likely to maintain concentration and remember what they have read. • • • #activereading #activereaders #activereaderskills #reading (at Detroit, Michigan) https://www.instagram.com/p/CYb_gJYuSd2/?utm_medium=tumblr

[READING] Reading Scholarly Sources
“Read smarter, not harder.”
“Even though it may seem like a solitary, isolated activity, when you read a scholarly work, you are participating in a conversation. ... Your job... is to locate the writer and yourself in this larger conversation. Reading academic texts is a deeply social activity; talking with your professors and peers about texts can not only help you understand your readings better, but it can push your thinking and clarify your own stances on issues that really matter to you.”
“Rhetorical reading refers to a set of practices designed to help us understand how texts work and to engage more deeply and fully in a conversation that extends beyond the boundaries of any particular reading. Rhetorical reading practices ask us to think deliberately about the role and relationship between the writer, reader, and text. When thinking about the writer, we are particularly interested in clues about the writer’s motivation and agenda. If we know something about what the writer cares about and is trying to accomplish, it can help orient us to the reading and understand some of the choices the writer makes in his or her work. As readers, our role is quite active. We pay attention to our own motivation and agenda for each reading. On one level, our motivation may be as simple as wanting to do well in a class, and our agenda may involve wanting to understand as much as necessary in order to complete our assignments. In order to meet these goals, we need to go deeper, asking, “Why is my professor asking me to read this piece?” You may find clues in your course syllabus, comments your professor makes in class, or comments from your classmates. If you aren’t sure why you are being asked to read something, ask! Most professors will be more than happy to discuss in general terms what “work” they want a reading to do—for example, to introduce you to a set of debates, to provide information on a specific topic, or to challenge conventional thinking on an issue.”
“In addition to figuring out what the text says, rhetorical reading strategies ask us to focus on how the text delivers its message.”
Who is the intended audience? For textbooks, it’s students. For scholarly sources, it’s other academics.
Pay attention to the title for clues, as well as the abstract, introduction, section headings, and conclusion.
What is the main argument or idea in this text?

🇵🇱 "The Princess and the Wizard" Julii Donaldson z księgarni @ksiegarniakangurek 🥰 i nasza Maja, która ok. 1,5-miesiaca temu zaczęła czytać na głos zdaniami. Maja za miesiąc kończy 4 latka. Czasem jeszcze potrzebuje pomocy z pojedynczymi słowami. Głośne czytanie to wyzwanie dla takiego malucha. Nigdy nie powinniśmy tego wymuszać. Czekamy aż dziecko samo zacznie. 🇬🇧 "The Princess and the Wizard" by Julia Donaldson from the bookstore @ksiegarniakangurek 🥰 and our Maja. She started showing off with reading English sentences 1,5 month ago. She will be 4 years old in a month. She sometimes needs help with single words. Reading aloud is a challenge for our little girl. We should never make a child do it. We just wait until they start by themselves. #ksiazkidladzieci #booksforkids #aktywneczytanie #activereading #macierzyństwo #motherhood #ksiazkipoangielsku #booksinenglish #juliadonaldson #booksaboutprincesses #ksiazkioksiezniczkach #princess #księżniczka #czytanieglobalne #metodadomana #domanmethod #earlyreading #earlyreaders #wczesnanaukaczytania #dwujezycznosczamierzona #naukadladzieci #englishforkids #angielskidladzieci https://www.instagram.com/p/B9Okpn9pv1y/?igshid=ah9bees7asm1

I've previously discussed my love of books that encourage kids to move and dance and jump and otherwise not just expend energy but teach them that books can be a locus for doing exactly that--that stories don't always have to be listened to passively, but can be an active part of movement and play. Vicki Churchill's Little Wombat character has been an adorably beloved central figure in stories for nearly 20 years, illustrated with bouncing mischief by Charles Fuge. But my absolute favourite iteration of this sweetheart is in "Sometimes I Like To Curl Up In A Ball" (2001), a rhyming rumpus about big feelings and where they lead us (and OH, HOW THEY DO LEAD US, LOL!), and the wonderful ways we can shout, leap, and sometimes just curl up and squish those feelings out. An absolute must for every child's bookshelf, available in regular or board book form, for particularly rambunctious days. ⚫ ⚫ ⚫ #noodlenutsclassickidlit #noodlenutskidsbooks #sometimesiliketocurlupinaball #littlewombat #vickichurchill #charlesfuge #wombat #wombatsofinstagram #activekids #activelistening #activestorytime #activelisteningskills #activereading #teachersofinstagram #storytime #keepkidsmoving #letthembelittle #preschooler #readaloud https://www.instagram.com/p/B5LhzcTHmUR/?igshid=1n32j8hk5697t

Actively engage in the opportunities presented to you
Take every opportunity that school has to offer.
I’ll say that again because I don’t think that you look me seriously the first time:
Take every opportunity that school has to offer.
I’m not just talking about college, enjoy your last [few] year[s] of high school. Go to the dances, dress up for spirit week, go crazy at pep rallies, do whatever it is that your school offers. You’ll have more fun, trust me.
Back to college: No matter where you decide to go to college, you’re going to have to do orientation. Which means that you’re going to be doing a lot of sitting and listening as various professors, students, and other staff talk to you about your college’s dynamic. Listen to what they have to say. They will give you a lot of valuable, useful information that you will end up using at some point in your college career. Go to all of the events, even if they aren’t mandatory.
But orientation isn’t just about being informed. There are plenty of fun events that get hosted as well. This year, we had a bonfire, a paint party (I’ll be making a separate post about this), a game show with a $200 cash prize for the winner, and a hypnotist. These were all really fun events, and on more than one occasion (especially at the hypnotist show), I laughed so hard I cried. A few of my friends were hypnotized, so watching them literally act like zombies was hilarious.
A final thought before I go:
Please do the readings.
Be it a summer reading or a reading you’re assigned once classes start, actually read it. I know it can be really hard to read things sometimes because they’re boring or you think you’ve got better things to do, but please read them anyway. If you’re really struggling to stay focused, here is my biggest tip and it really helped me when reading my summer assignment (Trace by Lauret Savoy, pictures featured): actively read. Here are some ways how:
Highlight--use one color, use lots of colors. Create a key for yourself. Highlight your favorite parts, good quotes, great imagery, whatever makes sense to you. (As you can see in the key I made (I’m such a nerd I’m sorry), I highlighted “interesting descriptions/accounts,” “strong/powerful descriptions/accounts; more closely related to the author’s thoughts/feelings,” and “new words”).
Write in the book--in the margins, in between the lines, with different colored ink, draw pictures, etc. (I used a blue pen to put brackets around facts, and a black pen to draw little doodles in the book (that picture is actually of my ear, I do have those earrings in, I am a biiigg nerd)).
Use sticky notes--if you don’t like writing in your books, that’s completely understandable (or if you rented it or it’s a library book, don’t write in those). Use sticky notes to flag pages, make comments, doodle, etc. (I used different colored stickies for different things: blue were for additional/clarifying information of facts, and pink were for the definitions of words).
Actively reading helps get you engaged so you’re not just absentmindedly looking over the words as they come across the page.
