Fieldwork ~ Ethnicity and Nationalism

How long has your family lived in this country?

My family started to immigrate to the United States in the 1980’s. My dad’s aunt, Wilfida, came in 1981 and slowly started encouraging my dad and his siblings to come over. My dad emigrated from Honduras in 1997 with his sister-in-law and niece. When he finally made it to Virginia, where the rest of my family settled down, my aunt Wilfida and my dad’s siblings helped him go to trade school and find a job. On my Mom’s side of the family, her father was the first one that planned to immigrate to the United States. Unfortunately, he passed away before he could make his dreams come true. However, my grandfather’s younger brother, Adali, was inspired by him and Immigrated to the United States in 1988. He then paid for the Coyote (a person who smuggles immigrants across the border) who brought my mom’s older sister, Silvia. In 2002, my aunt Silvia and my dad’s brother, Thomas, paid for my mom’s Coyote to bring her to the U.S. from Honduras.

Where did they come from?

Honduras is a Central American country with the Caribbean Sea to the North and the Pacific Ocean to the South. It has a lot of mountain ranges, tropical rainforest and beautiful beaches with clear, blue water. It even contains some ancient Mayan ruins. Both of my parents come from Honduras, but from very different parts of the country. My dad comes from a small town called El Cubulero in the Southern part of Honduras. It’s a small town with few schools and job opportunities, so getting a high education or a well paying job is very difficult. This is the main reason why my dad left for the United States, in order to find better opportunities. My mom comes from San Pedro Sula, the industrial hub of Honduras. This city is known for its export of bananas and coffee and factories of the garment industry. However, it is also the most dangerous city in Honduras due to its high activity of gang violence, drugs and overall poverty. My mom didn’t plan on leaving, but her mother told her she should look for better opportunities in America.

Has your family embraced American Nationalism?

I believe that my family embraces American patriotism rather than American nationalism. My parents love this country because it has given them so many opportunities that they couldn’t have gotten back home. My parents made the journey to the United States before they even turned 21, so they learned how to become independent adults here. They were discovering who they wanted to be at the same time they were learning about a new country. They learned that although the U.S. is a great place to find opportunities and to start a new life, that doesn’t make it the best place. My parents love America for everything it has to offer and because they started a family here, but they will never stop loving Honduras. They grew up in Honduras, so their favorite childhood memories and their favorite teenage adventures are all connected to their homeland. Their customs, traditions and language come from Honduras, which are all things that my siblings and I have grown up with. We were born Americans but were raised Hondurans. Just like my parents, we live between 2 countries, one is where we were born and raised and the other is where we gained our identity and culture from. My Siblings and I share some of our fondest memories when visiting Honduras and getting to live our lives like our parents. We have seen where our parents come from and appreciate everything they have given us by coming to the United States. We have only ever lived in the U.S., so my siblings and I are patriotic but could never be nationalistic because of our connection to Honduras.

If some of your family have migrated from other parts of the world, how do they integrate their American identity with their ethnic identity?

I think that the best way for my family to integrate their ethnicity is through food, language and communal activities. We eat all kinds of Honduran food, from Baleadas, a simple, humble dish made with flour tortillas, refried beans and queso duro, to Seafood Soups,  made of fish and shellfish in fish broth and/or coconut milk. At home I eat Honduran food, but outside of my home I eat a lot of American food. However, sometimes they can be blended together. One example I can think of is how I love burgers with encurtido, red onions, jalapenos, and carrots pickled in pineapple vinegar. Language also plays a big role in integrating my American identity with my ethic identity. My first language is Spanish, since that’s what my parents are fluent in, but my primary language is English, since I live in the United States. There are times where I blend the two together and speak Spanglish when talking to my family and Spanish speaking friends. I also tend to  think in English but speak in Spanish and vice versa, which can lead to misunderstandings and grammatical errors. One final thing that ties my American identity and ethic identity are the fairs that the Honduran community has during the summer. In Honduras these fairs are held in local communities to raise money for projects or people in need. At these fairs, people watch soccer games while eating Carne Asada, Enchiladas, Honduran tacos, etc. and play games like La Corrida de Cinta. In this game, riders pass under a rope with small ribbons connected to little hoops. The rider uses a small stick in order to pull on the ribbons with the hoops. The ribbon usually has a number on it, which is connected to someone’s name. That person is supposed to give the rider a prize, which is traditionally money. Originally riders would use horses but in the U.S. they use bikes. The fairs in the U.S.  are usually held in order to raise money to send back home to help local communities.

How to Make Writing Friends (Even When You Don’t Know Anyone)

Forming a writing community isn’t always easy, especially when you’re new in town. That’s what today’s guest poster, Municipal Liaison Kasey McElroy, overcame. Here’s her story of how making friends through NaNo helped her writing:

In 2016, I participated in NaNoWriMo, and it changed my entire view on the writing community. Prior to that year, I had been living with my mother and grandparents in the tiniest town you could possibly imagine, about an hour and a half from Houston. NaNoWriMo didn’t really exist where I came from—it was something I did, and something I talked to my friends online about. But it wasn’t a group I was “in”—I was in high school, where the writing community was virtually non-existent to outsiders.

During my first two years, I couldn’t really get into NaNoWriMo. I tried! I had been taking on this writing challenge for years! But with the changes in my own life, and the amount of other, “real adult” expectations I had, who had time for that? Not me, most certainly. I would get through the first two weeks of NaNo before, slowly and surely, falling off the bandwagon.

That all changed when I moved to San Antonio.

On November 1, 2016, I decided, You know what? I’ll go to that kickoff party. I want to get to know these people in this area. I wanted writing friends. After all, what was the worst that could happen—they wouldn’t like me?

Going to that kickoff party turned out to be one of the best things I’ve ever done for myself.

I found myself involved in an active writing community. I made friends, and we ended up meeting up throughout that year and into the next, spending time with each other and pursuing our creative goals together. It helped me learn a lot of things about my own writing—about how I wrote, and what methods of writing worked best for me.

“To me, the most important part of my NaNoWriMo experience was the ability to grow alongside a community of writers.“

For instance, I tried writing by hand instead of typing. It made me realize that, despite the fact that I can churn out the pages on a computer, writing by hand helps me slow down and organize my thoughts better. It helped me realize how I could develop my own writing, figuring out where my plot holes were and how I could fix them.

This year, I (accidentally—long story!) became a co-ML of the San Antonio Region, and I found myself helping develop our writing community. Our region came through strong—we formed some pretty good friendships, and they’ll continue to blossom throughout the year. Some of us have exchanged manuscripts for editing and peer review, and we even meet up on Saturday mornings to write together.

To me, the most important part of my NaNoWriMo experience was the ability to grow alongside a community of writers. They help keep me accountable for my creative process, which in turn helps me improve my writing. I’ve learned and grown and developed my own style over the last few years. I attribute much of that growth to my NaNoWriMo community, for which I will forever be thankful.

And now that I’m starting to think about editing my novel, I’m once again looking to this community to help me out. Honestly, when it comes to the editing process, I’m a little clueless! But I’m sure that, with the help of my friends, I’ll learn.

Origin: Maya

Maximón is a master shape shifter, reconciling religious traditions and offering guidance to indigenous Mayans who venerate him in Guatemala. He is also a heavy drinker and smoker.

Maximón, also known as San Simón, is an important Mayan folk saint in Guatemala represented by a dressed up wooden effigy sitting on a chair who, unlike other saints, smokes cigars and drinks alcohol. Today Maximón is actively worshiped as part of what we could refer to as “folk Catholicism“, especially in the highlands of Guatemala.

His visitors travel from near and far to come see him and ask for protection, money, to be cured or even find a husband. Maximón receives everyone – men and women, villagers and urban dwellers, prostitutes and entrepreneurs – who come with many offerings including tobacco, liquor, money and tortillas (his favourites).

Christian missionaries who came to Guatemala to convert the local people encountered the primordial Mayan deity Maam, Lord of the Universe. Attempts to syncretize him to Saint Simon backfired. Instead of the Mayan god fading discreetly into the identity of the saint, Maximón, as he became known, took on a whole new life and personality of his own: defiant, rambunctious, anti-social. The Church then attempted to syncretise him with Judas Iscariot or even Satan, but it was too late. All they did was enhance Maximón’s outlaw image and make his devotees love and admire him even more.

Maximón’s appearance varies greatly by location. While he’s popularly depicted as a man in a suit and hat, this isn’t a constant. In Santiago Atitlán, he wears colourful garlands and scarves, while in Zunil, he wears sunglasses and a bandanna.

Although his wardrobe has been updated and modernised, Maximón is an ancient, primordial spirit. He has survived numerous attempts to suppress his veneration and is now more popular than ever, venerated throughout the Americas and Europe.

He is generally benevolent, associated with healing, prosperity, and protection. In Guatemala, Maximón is traditionally invoked for protection for or from anti-government forces. Nothing is beyond his assistance or outside his jurisdiction. Maximón is said to represent both light and dark, and to be a trickster. He is both a womaniser and a protector of couples. Be wary.

Maximón is a crossroads spirit. He mediates between the living and the dead, people and spirits. He serves as a bridge between malevolent and benevolent spirits. Maximón is an extremely responsive spirit who works for comparatively modest offerings.

He makes people’s dreams come true. He challenges believers. He heals. He helps overcome obstacles. He stands against injustice. He dances the night away. He brings wealth and success. Fertility and prosperity. He wins the heart of women and protects from infidelity. In fact, he is the lord of sexuality standing for all unresolved matters of a moral nature.

Legend says that one day he was caught sleeping with the wives of the village men who had supposedly gone to work. Furious, they cut his legs and arms off. So Maximón also makes mistakes, which makes it easier for people to relate to him. Sometimes when he brings justice to a person, it is even at the expense of another. Thus, he sits at a crossroads between being both a deity and a trickster, a friend and a fiend.

Maximón may indicate his presence via the smell of cigar smoke when no cigars are present. He visits in dreams.

Spells, Rituals and Operations:

Maximón is invoked in numerous magickal spells, rituals, and operations.

Protection of your business

Place his image in your shop or store to stimulate better business and for luck, money, and protection. Maximón foils and/or punishes shop-lifters and thieves

Abusive people or situations.

If someone abuses you, whisper your needs directly into the ear of Maximón’s image. Place the person’s photo under Maximón’s left foot, or write a note and place it there.

Requests for love.

Coil a rope around his image (even around his neck!) to show him that you need his help capturing someone’s heart or alternatively, for hobbling competing suitors. Whisper in his ear to tell him what you need.

Marital issues.

Wrap a rope around his image to keep your spouse from running off with another.

Maximón is invoked to heal addictions.

He will accept request on behalf of others, especially addicts. He may be invoked on behalf of someone else who cannot or will not ask him themselves. It is not necessary to tell the person that you have requested Maximón’s blessings on their behalf. The deal is between you and Maximón. Make offerings and tell him what the other person needs. However, even if the other person reaps the blessings, Maximón is doing YOU the favour; YOU must fulfil any vows or promises made.

Colours and Candles

An elaborate colour scheme is used to communicate with Maximón. Those who are experienced candle-burners may choose to retain their own candle colour associations, but the following colour chart is commonly used to communicate desires and petitions to Maximón. Burn the colour candle that closest represents your needs:

Black: Protection from envy, jealousy, enemies, and the deliberately cast Evil Eye

Blue: For good luck, employment

Brown: Protection from resentment and the accidentally cast Evil Eye

Green: Business, prosperity, cash

Light Blue: Cash, travel, education, and happiness

Pink: Hope, health

Red: Love, fidelity

White: Protection of children

Yellow: Protection for adults

Offerings:

Hats, silk scarves, flowers (he likes bougainvilleas, carnations, and gladioli), fruit, tobacco products especially cigars, copal incense, water, Coca-Cola, tequila, aguardiente. An elaborate offering when you really need a big favour or as a fulfilment of a vow is forty candles plus copal incense.

Images:

The oldest images of Maximón consisted of masks and mysterious wrapped bundles. However a modern votive image has also evolved possibly based on the only known existing photograph of shaman, wizard, and Maximón devotee Francisco Sojuel (died circa 1907), credited with crafting the first modern Maximón mask. This image depicts Maximón as a moustached man wearing a black suit and a Stetson or similar hat. He is usually, but not exclusively, depicted sitting.

The modern image closest to his ancient one consists of a bundle of fabric topped with one or more Stetson hats.

The name Maximón is often interpreted as deriving from Maam and Simon. Another theory suggests that it derives from Maam and ximon, a Mayan word that may refer to a bundle or the act of “tying up,” essentially creating a bundle. The use of bundles as sacred objects is not uncommon in indigenous American spiritual and magickal traditions.

Votive images range from pocket-size to life-size. The mouth of his statue may be open so a real cigar may be inserted.

Alternatively, the statue may be designed so that the cigar can be placed in his hand. Ashes and stubs from offerings are collected and preserved. Placed in a small charm bag they serve as amulets, allegedly bringing good luck. Sometimes tubes are inserted into statues so Maximón can actually “drink.” Liquor passing through his system is then reserved for ritual use.

Maximón often accumulates an extensive wardrobe. He is a fastidious spirit whose clothes must be kept clean. The rinse water used when hand-washing his clothes may be preserved as Holy Water, or magickally charged water. It is said to have magickal and healing powers.

Festivals and Sacred Sites:

Guatemalan festivals dedicated to Maximón coincide with Holy Week, culminating on Good Friday.

One of the aspects of Maximón is that he can appear in any form. During Easter week he takes on the form of Judas Iscariot, who in betraying Jesus became the catalyst who put into action the events ended in the crucifixion of Jesus. Judas (Maximón) then hangs himself.

What has sometimes been described as a lynching in Guatemala, is actually a Easter Week re-enactment of the crucifixion where the hanged man is Maximón in his guise as Judas Iscariot. The Tz’utuhil Maya workers on the fincas [plantations] on the coastal side of the Volcano Atitlán have brought their customs with them from the highlands in Santiago Atitlan.

Maximón is the subject of innumerable home shrines, but his major public shrine is in Lake Atitlan, Guatemala.

In Santiago Atitlán, Maximón’s effigy resides in a different household every year. His image is normally only taken out of this house during Holy Week, where after it will change households, but is on display year-round due the popularity of pilgrimages. The effigy of Maximón in Santiago stays with one of five families, who are members of a religious brotherhood looking after the saint. He stays there for an entire year, and is moved during the procession of Holy Week.

Maximón lives in a room within the family home, and he is accompanied by two chosen family members at all times. Yep, you read that right: at all times…for a year. The chosen two won’t work for a year; guarding Maximón and spending time with him is their full-time job for 365 days. They stay by the altar year-round, drinking and smoking alongside it.

But that’s not all. These guys are also there to pass on offerings from visitors to the effigy, which are usually in the form of cigarettes, cigars, money, tobacco, and moonshine. Visitors can then ask for good health, good crops or marriage counsel. The two guardians usually put on one of Maximón’s two cowboy hats and speak to him in a local dialect.

It looked like they were having a casual chat, the guardian resting his arm on Maximón’s shoulder in a brotherly way, stopping his speech every once in a while, as if listening for Maximón’s reply, or simply to tip the ash off his cigarette.

If you want to share a drink with Maximón, you can do that too. He likes the local ‘Quetzalteco’ and his guardians will pour it through Maximón’s mouth. Because he’s hollow, the liquid flows through him and out between his leather boots. It’s then caught in a glass and drunk by the guardians or other family members who happen to be passing through. Like some kind of spiritual keg you can tap. This means the guardians are always drunk, or at least sleeping off a big drink. All the time.

In the town of San Andrés Itzapa, there is a large temple to Maximón. Here, offerings such as corn, flowers, and candles are burned in public by Shamans for the deity. Pilgrims travel to this temple from all across Latin America.

Maximón is more than just a saint. He represents the resilience of Mayan people in the light of their struggles against oppression, a symbol of hope and transformation.

Myths and Legends:

According to some legends, Maximón was an elder who reincarnated to protect his people. During the Spanish Conquest, an elder named Ri Laj Mam, upset by the evils of the Spaniards, encouraged his people to start a rebellion. He was eventually executed, but returned to life in the form of a judge named Don Ximon, who fought to give land back to the native people of Guatemala.

Another legend states that Maximón was hired by travelling fishermen to protect the virtue of their wives. Instead, Maximón disguised himself and slept with all of them.

In Santiago Atitlán, an alternative tale says that Maximón was never a man, but a wooden figure created by Shamans to defend the village from witches. However, Maximón used trickery to harm the people of the village, so the Shamans twisted his head around and broke his legs to stop him. He then did his job properly and protected the people of the town from evil.

In Honduras, troubled youth trade gangs for sports

COFRADÍA, HONDURAS--The bike rider makes a silhouette in the air before landing on the ground and undertaking a few complicated acrobatics. You can clearly see the satisfaction on his face. He is one of many young people who, in a troubled area of Honduras, have swapped misdemeanors for sports thanks to the Skate Brothers.

“I do these tricks on bikes, but I am also a skater. I was on the wrong track for six years; I was looking for an adrenaline rush on the streets and found one here that doesn’t put my life at risk. Here we are one big, happy family,” says Gendrik Torres, 19, before jumping his bike onto a multipurpose track that many others are enjoying.

When the sun sets, a swarm of children and young people come together every day to demonstrate their skills on the track, while others show off their singing and dancing talents in a room next door. Some speed off on roller skates like arrows, others do tricks on their skateboards, and still others take to the track with their bikes.

“Pain is temporary, but satisfaction is forever. I love coming here because there is a family atmosphere and it stops you from thinking about getting into gangs or things like that,” explains young skater Bayron Rodriguez, 13, with the wisdom of an adult.

He and Mr. Torres are just two of the many young people who gather every afternoon to take part in this program in Cofradía, a community south of the city of San Pedro Sula, one of the most violent places in Honduras. At the end of 2017, the country’s homicide rate was 42.8 killings per 100,000 inhabitants, one of the highest in the world.

The inspiration to create the program came from Jessel Recinos, a Honduran who traded crime for skating and founded Skate Brothers to keep young people away from gangs.

“I joined a gang when I was 15, but in 2005 my life changed after I was shot with a 9-millimeter pistol. The last bullet went through my back and came out above my heart,” describes Mr. Recinos, unbuttoning his shirt to show the scar. “I promised God right there and then I would leave this dark world behind. The doctors didn’t understand--I survived by miracle.”

That vow to “become a good person” led him to start Skate Brothers in 2011, a nonprofit skating club that has become a model for young people tempted by drugs, crime, and maras, or gangs. “We have prevented many people from falling into vandalism; we are the antivirus to this problem,” says Recinos.

The project was initially located within Cofradía’s outreach center, a Catholic Church aid center for children and young people in high-risk areas. Funding came from a donation of 24,400 Honduran lempiras ($1,020) from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

In 2017, also thanks to donations from USAID and the Catholic Church, Skate Brothers was able to open its own facilities, which include an office, a gym, a meeting room, football and basketball courts, a multipurpose track, bathrooms, a cafeteria, and locker rooms.

“When we cut the ribbon, I sat down on the track, looked at my ‘sheep,’ and it brought tears to my eyes to see how many young people were already safe,” says Recinos, who in 2016 was chosen by the US State Department as one of 10 Emerging Young Leaders across the world.

Today, about 70 children and young people come to have fun for free at a place where they can practice rollerblading, skateboarding, acrobatics, modern dance, rap, and football. “Some of them used to belong to gangs, and Skate Brothers has changed their lives. We don’t just teach them different disciplines, we are also mentors because we have become friends,” says Recinos.

The institution makes ends meet thanks to meeting room rentals, a gym, sponsorships, raffles, and other activities. “We do it out of love,” says the founder, but adds that they need further financial support.

Among their current objectives are obtaining legal permission to process any aid that comes to them, and reaching out to other parts of the country. “One of our goals is to expand into parts of Honduras where there are conflicts. If we can find an organization to support us, the project will keep on flourishing, because we want more young people to be reached by Skate Brothers,” says Recinos.

Travel Guide: Weekend on Catalina Island

First trip of 2017 under my belt and now I have wanderlust like whoah! Who am I kidding, I always have wanderlust. If you followed our trip on IG then you know we did ALL. THE. THINGS. As one person commented "you pretty much did everything but ride a bison!" which btw, you can't do! If you are interested in planning a trip to Catalina then you are in the right place. So happy to bring back my travel guides and this is probably the most comprehensive because, well, you'll see:

Last weekend was actually my 4th time visiting Catalina, however, this was my first time staying for a few days as an adult. It's truly the perfect weekend getaway, especially for those of you that live in LA. Can you believe it's only an hour boat ride away? Avalon is about 2.9 square miles; the community is very intimate but it has so much to offer in terms of food, activities, and fun. As long as you are staying somewhere near the main drag, Crescent Ave., you will have access to everything! It's all walking distance.  So how did we spend our 3 days in Catalina?

Day 1 Andy and I took the early boat out of San Pedro on my birthday (btw, the Catalina express is free on your birthday!) and arrived in Avalon around 10:15am. I was honestly so happy that the waters were calm because when I visited in high school almost my entire class got sick on the boat! Once we got there we checked our bags at the Aurora Hotel which to me is like a little modern B&B. We instantly became bff's with the front desk staff who were beyond helpful in giving us suggestions and tips for navigating the island. 

After we got settled we picked up a golf cart to explore the island. I really suggest doing this on day one so you have a grasp of how big yet small the island really is. It's built pretty far back in the mountains but it's mostly residents, a few hotels, and a golf course. A 2 hour rental is really all you need to get a lay of the land.  

For my birthday dinner we dined at Bluewater Grill which was sooo delicious. Andy is obsessed with crab cakes and we decided that Bluewater has the best crab cake we've ever tried. I got the prawn pasta which was very yummy; the portions are huge, so I got to take some home for a midday snack the next day.

Speaking of birthdays, aside from getting a free ride on Catalina Express everyone on the island treats you like a princess. There's a ton of great promos like free ice cream that make it such a special day!

Day 2

The island is pretty sleepy (at least it is in the winter time), so we ended up going to bed pretty early and getting up early to explore more. We grabbed a coffee and walked the via Casino; a beautiful beachside path that leads to Descanso beach. 

Descanso Beach Club is the sh**t - the weather wasn't so much in our favor last weekend but the two day trips I've taken to Catalina have all been to go lay on the beach at Descanso Beach Club. Think of it like any beach club: lounge chairs, cabanas, drinks, and good food. If you're going in the summer definitely reserve a chair or cabana ahead of time! 

After a little exploration we did the Taste of Catalina Food Tour which was incredible. I highly suggest the tour if you like food (everyone!) and are interested in learning more about the island. We went to 6 different restaurants and cafes and tried the best things on their menu (I'll list them at the end). We also got a serious history lesson on Catalina  - did you know Marilyn Monroe lived there before she was MM? 

I was really hoping to get some beach time, but since it was pretty chilly we decided to check out the Island Spa Catalina which feels like a tranquil Spanish paradise. The spa was the perfection solution to my "I just want to be in a bikini" because they have a pool and jacuzzi. A few glasses of champs and a steam room later... I was one happy girl. 

You'd think we couldn't eat anymore after our food tour but Luau Larry's was calling our name. I'd heard from many people that it was a fun spot to grab a drink and dinner and it didn't disappoint. The crowd was lively, music hopping, and the tiki drinks were DELICIOUS. Andy ended up moon walking for some older ladies at some point - it was hilarious! And that wasn't the craziest part. Our server was the SAME server from Bluewater Grill the night before. Yup, how nuts? That's how small of a town it is!

Day 3

I woke up Sunday feeling like I could stay in Catalina forever. Like any vacay, the only decisions to make are "what should we eat?" and "where should we play? " but there's also something about the island that's so peaceful. The only way I can describe it is simple. Life just seems simple there and in the most positive way. 

Anywho, on Sunday we were scheduled to go parasailing but it was pretty rainy and cold, so Andy and I chickened out. Instead we walked down Crescent Ave. to check out the little stores and boutiques. We found ourselves at the Catalina Museum which is a beautiful building with so much history inside. They've laid out the history of the island in really cool visual timeline that brings it to life. Honestly, from the museum and the food tour I now feel like a Catalina expert! 

To round out our trip, we joined a bunch of football goers to watch the Superbowl at a local bar. Followed by a 1 hour trip back to reality on the Catalina Express! {eats} Bluewater Grill - delicious seafood spot on the water. I would definitely consider it the fanciest eatery in town but keep in mind everything there has a very casual, island vibe. Get the clam chowder and crab cakes.  Mr. Ning's Chinese Garden - potentially the only Chinese food on the island and it's delicious. Get the crab and cream cheese dumpling. Maggie's Blue Rose - bomb margaritas and mexican food! Even though we just had a teaser of this on our food tour, I am craving it like no other. Get the coconut margarita and chicken quesadilla.  The Lobster Trap - yummy seafood lunch spot. They have some exclusive beers on tap that you can't get anywhere else and an awesome seafood selection. Get the yellowtail!  Luau Larry's - tiki bar vibes. All around fun place to get a little tipsy (or more)!  {play}

Descanso Beach Club  - beach day the fancy way! If the weather is nice, definitely plan to spend an afternoon a whole day vegging out at the beach club.

Island Spa - beautiful and peaceful spa. Definitely hit the spa up if you're there with your significant other. Ask about half day deals! 

Catalina Island Museum - super informational about the history of Catalina. It really provides perspective on the island that you can't get anywhere else. Also a great "rainy day" activity! 

Golf Cart Rental - it's a no brainer! The perfect and only way to fully explore the island.
