I find your Edward really interesting in ways you seem to characterize him… I always find it fun seeing the other ways people make their Edwards- Your the blog that has actually gotten me to develop my own Edward further, and think about his childhood more. Ahh, side tangent! But I just find him fun. Also, the way you draw him is REALLY good, love the design! ❤️ (also your welcome, love your blog and love to see riddler rp blogs- and I’ve been mostly reading a lot of stuff from your blogs.)

Is there perhaps a favorite riddle of his? Or is he all across the board with his puzzles? How does he come up with his puzzles? Do they suddenly come up, or thought through before hand?

Is there a favorite universe you like to roleplay with Edward in that you rarely rp in? If so, which?

What is his relationship with other rouges? I notice a lot of content with him and the Sirens, so I’m curious to know what his relationship with the Sirens are… (Inclusion of the Gardener, because she def deserves to be in there- I think)

If you could think of other rouges, then feel free to add on to the ask!

Thank you very much, about everything! It makes me happy that people read that stuff! I tend to write a lot because I just have too much on my mind. xD Now, as for a favorite riddle? I sweeear I’ve thought of one before. But right now? Nothing is particularly coming to mind. But ironically, despite writing as Eddie, I... am terrible with riddles! As for thinking of puzzles - it... just depends. Some do just pop in his mind from sudden inspiration. But many are usually well-thought-out. He tends to search for things for inspiration; many of his puzzles involves cultures from all around the world. Typically, he goes for symbolism in his puzzles. Something symbolic like let’s saaay... he sets a puzzle up in a slaughterhouse, because he’s the slaughterer and vigilantes like Batman should be slaughtered like pigs.

As for universe? Nooot that I can think of? My own Ed is an original interpretation - which means I don’t really write him as his Animated Series depiction, or his Nu52 or anything like that. He’s just another Riddler. haha! Though, I do tend to take a lot of inspiration for characterization from the Arkham verse, and the Animated Series. Since those two are my favorite Canon Eddies. The only thing I wish I could RP is uhh... I feel there are still a lot of DC characters I haven’t quite gotten the chance to write with. (Haven’t really written with a Batman, yet! Even though I’ve been writing Ed for nearly a year now, and that dynamic is pretty important!) And I definitely wouldn’t mind writing with more Marvel characters, since I enjoy Marvel a lot. (More than DC, if not for Batman.) And it could work! I wouldn’t even have to make up a Marvel AU or anything. ‘cos there used to be Marvel and DC crossovers back in the 90s! So, I like to think they can exist in the same universe.

And honestly, his relationships with the rogues tend to vary depending on whom I’m RPing with! Just ‘cos, many ppl tend to write the characters differently than others do. Therefore, Ed can be friendly with some, but hate others. Though, in general - I like to think my Ed is friendly with many of the rogues, and even sees them as “friends” in a fucked up way. (Since he IS willing to manipulate them if it means furthering his own goals.) And even if he doesn’t always see eye to eye with them, either. He still views them as friends. Buuuut... not all of them. There are some rogues my Ed will often dislike, those being: Black Mask, Falcone, Zsasz, Hugo, Joker, Bookworm, King Tut. Black Mask & others like him just because Ed has a... distaste for mob bosses. Like ones that are legit mob bosses. Because mobs, in Eddie’s opinion, might as well just be more corrupt billionaires. They kill innocents for profits, and some mafias even deal with trafficking. So... Yeah. They’re icky to Eddie, and doesn’t align with his own set of morals. Ed doesn’t like Zsasz or Joker because he feels they both just kill kill kill for no good reason. And killing just innocents at that. Eddie, really does, enjoy killing, too. But he only targets specific people who he believes should die. Eddie doesn’t like King Tut because he feels they’re plagiarizing his style. Eddie HATES copycats.

I honestly really enjoyed Ed’s friendship with the Sirens in the comics. Therefore, I do love writing them as friends, or at least friendly toward each other. But as said, this could always change depending on whom I’m writing with. And I really miss Ed & Harley’s relationship in the comics. It had a lot of potential. But alas, now for some reason they always got to be at each other's throats. It sucks. In my own canon, which I have a fancomic in mind that I’ll probs never do but - Harley actually helps teach a reformed Eddie how to fight.

AS FOR THE GARDENER. Not gonna lie, I don’t really know much about her character. I don’t really know much regarding any of the new characters, that includes Miracle Molly. Or much of what’s even going on in the comics currently other than what I hear on my dashboard. I just kinda gave up on reading most of the newer comics, especially since the Nu52. Just because all comics I’ve read that involved Eddie in those... I didn’t enjoy. The ones I haven’t read but heard too much about (like the War of Jokes and Riddles) are REALLY BAD. I feel like they’ve really butchered his character now. The only comics I have enjoyed since Nu52 is Zero Year (and even that has its flaws) and Solitaire. (And ironically, that’s actually one of my, if not my favorite Riddler comic.) There’s one from Black & White I thought was okay and enjoyable enough. Still had the issue of Eddie potentially harming children. But at least it’s kind of played off as a joke in it (because they were orphans. The joke was if something happened to them, then Batman will have no more resources for Robin. Kind of dark humor there, but it did make me laugh. xD). But that’s really all I’ve enjoyed. So... I just don’t really bother with the new comics anymore because I got tired of ‘em, and how they do portray Riddler (and really, other characters) in them.

I notice that you actually use a couple of different Edwards across media as icons, but is there a definite Edward that you think fits your Edwards face perfectly? Or does he kinda mash together with other Edwards? Do you have like a face claim, perhaps?

Oh! Is there a song that you perhaps associate with Ed as well? Or do you have a playlist that you just have in mind for him?

What is Edwards relationship with Batman? I know across different types of versions that there is always like a different kind of relationship that Edward has with The Batman- so what’s your Edwards thoughts on him?

OKAY. The reason why I use multi-media icons for Ed is because I’ve been actually RPing for like, 8 years now? And ever since then I felt the need to have THOUSANDS of icons at the time. The problem with Edward is that... he doesn’t really have one good artist that stuck with him? If you know what I mean. My favorite artists for Eddie are Jim Lee,, which despite technically being the main villain of, Eddie was barely in Hush. And José Luis García-López.  Which I ADORE how he drew Eddie in Confidential... but that’s it! And really?? Those two artists... STILL don’t draw how I picture Eddie. The closest I can say how I picutre Eddie is Arkham City... and even that, I still don’t picture him 100%. But definitely closest. Originally, I was going to SOLELY use screencaps from Assault on Arkham for my Eddie icons. But,,, there just wasn’t enough icons for that to keep me satisfied. But it kinda sucks,, ‘cos some people assume my Eddie wears the domino mask. And I can’t blame them for that. But my Ed solely wears glasses. I’ve drawn plenty of arts of Eddie. Which can be viewed at @strangledwires​ But examples being here & here. Whilst I have actors in mind... it’s just that... I can’t find anyone who looks exactly how I picture Eddie looking.

GOD. Songs??? I can link you to many. But right now, “I Think it’s Arrogance” by Set It Off comes to mind. And “Bang Pow Boom” by Insane Clown Posse is actually a VERY accurate song of how I depict Ed!!!! 😂 I can probs name WAY MORE... but the list will be LONG. If you ever want that! Since I’ve,, A LOT OF SONGS I relate to him.

As for Batman. That’s actually VERY INTERESTING. My portrayal does not perceive himself as a villain. I think it was Arkham Origins in which he said he’ll show Batman what a “refined vigilante” looks like. And THAT’S my Ed!!!! He LEGIT sees himself as a VIGILANTE. He thinks of himself as the IDEAL VIGILANTE. And that Batman & the others are just corrupt people ruining the term. Eddie’s relationship with Batman? Well... it’s complicated! Eddie often projects his father onto Batman. And it gets so bad to the point where Edward THINKS he’s talking to his father instead of Batman! Why? Because Batman really does remind Edward of his father. Batman and his father, to him, shares similarities. They’re both big, they’re both “brutes,” they’re both unhappy/unsmiling. They both love to fight/beat others up (at least, Ed THINKS Batman has enjoyment in beating others up.) And they both make Ed feel like he’s stupid. Even if Batman is unintentional... every time Bat figures out his riddles or death traps, Ed think it’s Batman’s way of “proving he’s smarter.” And it makes Ed feel really dumb. So, Batman really does upset Edward because of these supposed similarities. Ed also legit believes Batman is working for the government, and that Batman is “against” him and his goal of actually “bettering Gotham”. But Ed is so paranoid... he tends to think many people are actually against him, and working for the government.

Even though I... don’t typically like Ed’s portrayal since the new 52. (Other than Solitaire. That was a pretty solid portrayal of Ed’s character imo.) There was a Flash comic where Ed said Batman “triggers ALL his triggers” and whilst that was probably intended as a joke... it’s fucking true. Not only does Batman trigger Ed’s traumatic memories. But he also triggers his mental illnesses. Because every time Batman solves his riddles/puzzles. It triggers Eddie’s narcissism. Because his NPD always strives him to be PERFECT. And his puzzles being solved... convinces his NPD/insecurities that he’s NOT perfect. And that’s why he has such a... breakdown when Batman “wins.” Because of how his parents treated him, Eddie convinced himself he HAS to be perfect, or else he’s NOTHING. He’s WORTH NOTHING.

So, even when/if Eddie’s reformed... that’s why I can’t see him getting along with Batman too well unless they really heal together. Because Batman really does trigger Eddie in multiple ways. He brings back far too many bad memories. And Ed, when reformed, fears that Batman will trigger him again to doing... well, bad things.

Edwards Uncle, was Edward named after that said uncle? Or was it just coincidence from the family? Also, do you have a voice claim for your Edward? If so, who?

LOOK. I ADORE QUESTIONS LIKE THESE. ‘cos I have lots of ideas, as I said. So it feels nice to spill ‘em!!! So, if you EVER have ANY questions - definitely feel free to send ‘em my way!!!

Eddie’s namesake is funny because YES. He was ACTUALLY named after his uncle. Which may seem quite... unexpected Given Amelie and her brother had QUITE the rocky relationship. But Amelie knew how much her parents favored her brother. Therefore, she was honestly hoping she could win their love by having a child, and naming him Edward - after their beloved child. One of the reasons why she insisted on keeping Eddie, and not going along with an abortion (which Ed’s dad wanted.) But... her plan didn’t work. Her parents couldn’t find it in their hearts to care for Eddie. Which, funny enough, Uncle Edward did end up loving Eddie. In a way, Amelie does share similarities with her son in that way. She wanted her parents to love her, tried to do things to make them love her. But it never worked. Though, Amelie had the issue of just being... lazy. Not wanting to put full effort into the things she does. So, she never did things to the extent that her son did.

And YES. Eddie’s voice actor, from the Arkham series, Wally Wingert is actually my voice claim for Edward! Because whilst many people praise John Glover. And I will agree, he’s a good voice. He’s not the perfect for Eddie, imo. Wally is damn near perfect. Especially his role in City (since I did notice he slightly changes it in Knight.) Because John sounds too sophisticated/gentlemanish for Ed. Ed may seem like a gentleman at first glance, but he’s not in reality. Eddie in a faux gentleman. He tries to play the role of a gentleman. But once you get to know him for more than five minutes; he’s actually quite the opposite. He “throws tantrums” when he doesn’t get his way. He’s quite rude. He’s a sore winner/loser. And I feel like Wally just REALLY nailed that. Wally perfectly expressed the sick joy Eddie was feeling whenever he “won” in the game over screens. Wally also was GOOD at expressing Eddie’s emotions. Since Eddie IS a very emotional person. And he’s also really good with Ed’s mood swings; being able to get angry in a snap if that’s what the script called for.

The only thing I’d change about Wally’s voice is that I may give him more of a Brooklyn accent. As I headcanon Eddie to have always been in Gotham his entire life. (Tho his grandparents, his mother’s parents, are French immigrants! Her Maiden name was Boucher!) In fact, Ed... rarely leaves Gotham.

Tell us more about Edwards siblings, I’m quite curious about them!

Hi hi hi! Thank you for the curiosity! 🥺 However, Eddie doesn’t have any siblings! If you’re referring to our riddle boy! Eddie grew up very, very alone as an only child. Why? Well... to begin with, he was an accident, which his parents decided to keep (and later mostly regretted.) So, they definitely didn’t want any more kids. They definitely could NOT afford to have any more children. Eddie spent a lot of his childhood hungry because they couldn’t afford food. Also, I feel it’s very important to Ed’s character that he doesn’t have siblings. Since as I’ve noted before - I feel Ed is supposed to be written as a tragically lonely character. That’s why he’s so... desperate for attention and love once he’s older. Because he’s been alone all his life. Siblings, for the most part, would kinda destroy the point of this. Tho since this is an RP blog, I don’t always mind writing AUs where he does have siblings with other characters. xD

Now, with other character blogs/muses. Ed has sibling-bonds with characters. But he wasn’t raised with them. He just views their relationship as that of siblinghood. And well,,. the only “sibling” relationship he has on this blog is with an OC blog! (Unless I’m forgetting someone - if I am, I apologize! My brain’s fried.)

If you’re referring to Eddie’s uncle, Edward. Who,,. unfortunately has the same name which makes it harder to talk about him without being confusing. (Even tho Uncle Edward, at this point, might as well be an OC. Don’t blame it on me! Inspiration from his name, and his character came from a comic where Eddie actually mentioned having a dead uncle named Edward! Haha!) Uncle Edward only had one sibling, and that was Eddie’s mom. And well... their relationship was pretty rocky, too. Given that Eddie’s mom (who I named Amelie,) hated her brother for being the “golden child.” She could’ve gotten along with him somewhat fine had it not been for her jealousy.

I recently saw your fear post, but I’m interested in you deepening your explanation on Edwards fears more. Why does he fear some of these things- are they connected to his childhood and his traumatic past?

Has Edward ever thought of what he would become outside of being a “vigilante”? Like, if he were to leave his criminal past behind, what do you think he would do instead?

What is one of Edwards biggest “OH SHIT!” moments if he’s ever had like a super notable one?

Sure thing! UH. Being alone is definitely connected to his childhood. That’s because due to neglect, Eddie just has this intense desire for love. And because he spent pretty much his entire life alone, he just... fears he’ll forever be alone. That this is just life for him. And honestly? It terrifies him. He just... really wants to be loved. But unfortunately his desire kinda manifested to the point where he wants to be loved by EVERYONE. Even though that’s impossible. 

Failure is also DEFINITELY connected to his childhood, but also because of his mental illnesses, too. Namely, NPD. Eddie has this overwhelming need to be “perfect.” He’s a perfectionist, in a way. He fears that if he fails, then that means he is stupid. That his parents were right about him all along. Eddie feels he has to succeed in order to prove his worth. This is one of the reasons why he... definitely reacts so horribly when Batman solves one of his puzzles.

Powerlessness, as well! Just because Eddie, when he was younger, had been placed in situations where he felt completely helpless, and couldn’t do anything about it. Therefore, he refuses to get back into such a situation again where he’s without power. He’s... terrified of the thought of it happening.

Dying??? Now... that’s just a fear that he has just because the idea is scary, a common fear of many humans. Nobody really knows what happens after you die, it’s the unknown. And... Eddie is just frightened of what may be waiting for him after life. If anything is at all. He doesn’t know what scares him more, the void or a hell. He also sees himself as far too important to die. That the earth needs him.

Abandonment isn’t just because of his parents, (tho they play a large part) but... mostly because Eddie’s dealt with it his entire life. Which only worsens his loneliness. His parents neglected him, he did have an uncle who was kind to him - but he had to go on and die. Then the only person he got along with back at the Cybercrime Division stopped talking to him (albeit, that IS because of Ed’s rather ugly attitude.) And every doctor he’s had had given up on him because they deemed him untreatable (Albeit, many of them also DID leave because of Eddie’s ugly attitude.) Therefore, Ed has just developed a fear that people he talks to will just... go away.

Not being good enough feels similar to failure. Again, as I said, Eddie feels this overwhelming need for perfection. And his entire life he was treated as though he’s not good enough. So, Eddie is just... very terrified that might be true. He does all he can to prove he IS indeed good enough, better than good enough.

Being forgotten might be connected to his traumatizing past, as well. Just because one of Eddie’s main goals is to be... Beloved. He wants to be remembered as this extraordinary person in history. The smartest man, as well as someone who really changed things around him. If he’s forgotten, well... that would ALSO confirm his father’s words that he’d never amount to anything.

Moving off fears now. Whilst as the Riddler, Eddie truly believes he’ll always be the Riddler. That it’s the only life he’ll ever have, and it’s what he’ll always be (doesn’t necessarily see this as a bad thing, either.) HOWEVER. It’s canon to this blog and my Eddie that he does indeed reform eventually and STOP being the Riddler. Because uuuuh, I’m always pissed at canon when they DO reform him, only to have him go bad again. Especially when it’s lazily and badly written. So, I’m saying fuck that. He does eventually reform and heal. But it’s a long journey, and even when he’s “reformed,” he’s still... Not Perfect. Still believes some people should die, just doesn’t think he should be the one to carry out the “executions” due to his poor judgement. But if he saw someone rather scummy getting kidnapped or murdered? Yeeeah... he’d not step in and save them. Just... walk away, LOL. When reformed, Eddie, like in many of Canon reformed Eddies, is a detective/private investigator! He usually takes on cases he’s interested in, and typically, if he can, tries to avoid anything involving some of the other rogues. Just because he still has warm feelings toward them. And he’s also scared they’ll “trigger” him back to being the Riddler.

NOW, AS FOR THAT? Honestly??? Don’t know! Because Eddie goes through, haha... he goes through A LOT of “oh shit” moments that it’s hard to say what is the biggest? Edward’s entire life is one. LOL.

Is there moments in Edwards childhood that were ever positive moments to him? Or does he mostly resent his childhood as a whole?

Naaah, ya good, fam! I’m always just happy for these type of questions, anyway - just ‘cos I’ve thought of... quite a bit, haha! Eddie HAS absolutely had some positive moments in his childhood. Mostly ‘cos I feel that applies to anyone - no matter how miserable a time may be, there’s always some good somewhere. Even if it’s minor. In Ed’s case, it’s rather minor. His uncle was actually quite nice to him, and was really his only relative that was nice to him. His uncle did give him presents - and more expensive ones, considering his uncle was actually wealthy. Although, his uncle unfortunately died when Eddie was only 5. So, his memories of him are a little shaky, because of that. Because Ed can’t have Nice Things.

And Ed even DOES have good moments with his parents when he was a small child. He actually knows a lot about sports because he’d watch baseball and NASCAR with his father. Since, at the time, Eddie just desperately wanted to bond with his father, he discovered that the old bastard enjoyed watching sports with him. As long as Ed’s not... too annoying whilst doing so. These were the very rare moments he did get along with his old man. And even with his mother - sometimes when she was drunk (since she was a horrific alcoholic) she’d get in the mood to dance, and she’d dance with Eddie when he was a child. Those were happier moments in his childhood. 

Howeverr... things really started falling apart when he became a teenager. Mostly because he started going through a lot of hormone changes/puberty, making him even more emotional/angrier. He also started showing more symptoms of mental illness, which came as an annoyance to his parents. And... he started going through some very, very traumatic experiences. Therefore, he became more hateful towards his parents - mostly his father, at the time. Until he eventually reached a breaking point with his mother. Eddie has some pleasant memories from his childhood, but his teenage years??? Yeah, he can’t really tell you much good from that time. He considers those to be the worst years of his life.
