ok fuck it infodump time.

in order to make The Music™ you need (apart from creativity, of course) equipment. the problem is: even though that equipment has been getting more and more accessible (or at least the knowledge of how to use it has), there's still some serious playwalls behind producing "acceptable", publishable music.

What I have, which can be considered the absolute minimum in order to make music, in terms of hardware is:

A computer. Mine is a Windows laptop.

A microphone, for vocals/acoustic instruments.

The instruments themselves, each coming with their own unique way of recording.

A so-called "audio interface", which will manage the audio from your sources to your computer.

A mixer for things like preamps, XLR (mic) and P10 (instrument) jacks, pre-compressing and EQ'ing (though it is recommended to do all of this later, since that way you can take it back). Mine is built into the interface.

A MIDI controller, I use my Casio keyboard with a USB-A to USB-B cable (most modern MIDI controllers don't use MIDI cables, because those have been long deprecated in computers).

Earphones! You need to hear what you're doing.

Cables, cables and more cables. Currently I have: USB-A-to-B for interface and MIDI controller, XLR for mic and P10 for guitar.

Throughout the years I've probably spent R$5000 (~U$950) on all that equipment. But now you'll need even more money, because you still need a DAW. In terms of software, I have:

The Digital Audio Workstation.

Around 40 VST plugins, all free (but could be anywhere from a couple dollars to hundreds)

Around 10 FX plugins, all built-in.

A sampler.

If you look in the right places you can make acceptable, publishable music with free stuff from the internet. Another catch: how? "Why is my microphone quiet?" "How to mix simple" "Vocal harmonies bus" "Exporting silence" those were all Google searches of mine from the past week. DAWs are understandably complicated because they can do amazing things, but they're still not very user-friendly, and the ones that are, are looked down upon.

You will run into way more problems with the cheap hardwares and free softwares. Take myself (again) as an example: the studio-grade equipment would be a large diaphragm condenser mic, close-back, high impedance monitor headphones and a Good DAW. Entry-level of these would be: an AKG condenser mic, an Audio-Technica monitor and Ableton Live. Did you see the prices? Yeah.

Let's talk earphones, which I was having problems with before. My in-ear JBLs were being picked up by my AKG tube mic (DEFINITELY not the one I linked above, it's this one). If it were close-backs, that problem would either not happen (for studio monitor headphones) or be dramatically reduced (for public-use headphones like my previous JBL Tone 200s).

Another problem with earphones is that each design of sound-playing device responds differently to each frequency in the human audible spectrum. What does that mean? Have you ever heard someone in the street blasting ear-piercing music? How about feeling the music in your chest? Those sound-playing devices placed emphasis is trebles and bass, in that order. Most popular earphones boost the bass a little, since pop music is very bass-oriented.

But that can be a problem when producing. You see, with EQs and compressors, you'd think whoever made a song chose exactly the way it sounds, just the way a painter chooses the lighting carefully. That's true, however with earphones that respond better te certain frequencies better than others, it's like the painter has glasses that enhance a certain color. The painter sees too much red, so they use a more "toned down" red, to compensate.

Other people with similar glasses may find it good, however the people that emphasise yellow will see it defferently. That's why producers need earphones that respond equally (well, almost) to every frequency in the audible spectrum, because that mimics human eyes, which as far as we know do respond equally to every frequency in the visible light spectrum.

Anyways, this has been "I hate that I'm broke". I'm not hopeless, though, I'll deal with these problems and one day, will have all the studio equipment. Bye for now.
