Hey there, typical Uendo information post incoming. Read this if you're unfamiliar with the character or are struggling between these "two".

First, Uendo's characterization works in the opposite direction of how most systems are written.

Everything about Uendo goes back to the artform of rakugo, not DID. Their plurality is enhanced because they're a character built around a longstanding cultural artform to draw inspiration from.

It feels innovative to look at DID and go 'no, it's not enough to just have DID. Where's the theming?" It's humanizing in the sense their life doesn't purely revolve around their plurality.

Just look at their canon fictives.

Second, Uendo is specifically a parody character of murder systems in the murder mystery genre.

Ace Attorney is a murder mystery franchise, that has always sort of strayed from the typical trope of "hidden murder alter". With Uendo, they go so far to dunk it in the trash.

Owen, the "secret 4th alter", is built up over the course of your time with Uendo. New players may assume that he's the culprit. This assumption is built up only to be torn down at Owen's reveal: Owen is a scared, 5 year old child mentally. The player character is outright mocked for even assuming Owen might be the culprit.

Owen is the youngest witness in the entire franchise, and basically serves as the polar opposite to the scary murder alter trope. He's completely harmless, which has challenged many people on their preconceived notions on plurality.

Part of the tragedy of the case is that Owen genuinely loved the victim, Uendo's teacher, but was a witness to the event. It's a little vague for the main 3's part, but they seemed determined on protecting their Little from testifying and being traumatized.

Third, Uendo's depiction is actually fairly nuanced for a game that says "Dissociative Identity Disorder" out loud.

Let's not beat around the bush here, there's a lot of misinformation and assumptions surrounding DID systems. Why we love Uendo is they have a much more 'realistic' portrayal (minus rapid switching)

Uendo, Patches, and Kisegawa all share memories and can co-front with one another. They actually use their plurality to their advantage, to help with their comedy routines. It's a really nice portrayal of plurality being used in a healthy way in a system's life.

This actually distinctly confused singlet players upon first meeting Uendo. "Wasn't their strict memory barriers between every alter?" This was the first time we too got introduced to this idea, and it helped our mental health greatly in the long run.

Other than that, we already mentioned Owen's age, but Kisegawa is canonically and respected as a woman! In fact, every alter is completely respected in terms of their identity, immediately! The court instantly accepts Owen as 5, which is very reaffirming.

Fourth, (possibly most important) Uendo inadvertently confirmed their entire franchise was plural.

See, the thing about Uendo is they're not really the first plural character in Ace Attorney, they're just the first to say "DID" out loud.

That would easily go to Maya Fey (and Mia Fey) from the first game, the first assistant characters, who flavored the rest of the series.

Maya has the art of spirit channeling, a way to call the dead and let them take over her body to speak to the living. Metatextually, this is to give her an excuse to also be Mia, your deceased mentor figure.

What makes Uendo special is they're from Spirit of Justice, a game primarily themed around Maya's spirit channeling. Each trial either features or has a parallel example to letting a dead person take over.

Uendo with Owen is, in fact, that parallel.

This isn't hyperbole, this is the game itself acknowledging that one of the closest things to it's main fantastical hook is DID.

And, due to their being so many characters that emulate Maya, well...

Fifth... honestly everything else about them just really shows a level of quality, you know?

They're GENUINELY funny. Like the charm and cute fun just oozes off of Uendo every second they're on screen. They steal the show so hard, and we genuinely obsess over every line they have.

Notice Uendo's hair flops forward to look like "bangs" for Owen. Isn't that both hilarious and so smart from a character design perspective? They're probably the best designed system in fiction.

They formed a half baked scheme to not get framed for murder because they watch murder mysteries on TV. (Almost worked too!)

Uendo is one of the only characters to have a name not change from the original release (Kisegawa). But when changing "Bifu" to "Uendo", to make it a pun on "Wind", the translators actually made sure it still worked as a Japanese name. It stands for "Feather Performer".

Uendo makes SITTING funny. Their mats keep disappearing and multiplying at random sometimes and it's funny every time. They made a system who can make even sitting funny. They're amazing.

So... yeah! To us, Uendo Toneido is the best system quality wise in fiction, bar none. They don't appear for long, but their quality speaks leagues for itself.

It says a lot that when someone obsesses over Uendo they OBSESS over Uendo.

Mikayla being space royalty and a superhero AND adopted by the Warners sound like your typical mary sue backstory but i promise you it makes more sense one you read the lore i have!

Norah Jordan (Kayla's mom) didn't have a good relationship with her parents so she was eager to get out of the house and go to college. At the time she studied marine biology. One day at the beach she found Optimatus washed up on the shore, having had survived a surprise attack by martians ans a crash. She took him in and during his recovery they fell in love. Months passed and a search and rescue party arrived on Earth to pick up Optimatus. While he hated to leave his new life he knew he has to go back to Freleng. He never even told Norah of his royal backstory. He left knowing he had to do something to keep the galaxy safe. Norah often wondered what happened to her mysterious love. Soon after Optimatus left she found out she was pregnant.

Following Mikayla's birth Norah struggled with balancing school and taking care of a baby. So she hired the Warners to be a babysitter. The gag/episode runs as normal and the usual shenanigans occurred. Luckily the Warners make it out in one piece and Norah comes home to fine Mikayla sleeping peacefully. Impressed Norah continued to hire the Warners as caretakers, eventually in gratitude the Warners put in a request for Norah to work a highly-coveted job at the then-new movie ACME studio in Acmetropolis. Norah doesn't get the job but she does get to be the Warners' secretary. Years go by, Mikayla comes to see them as family, even changing her last name to Warner.

Their influence weren't exactly positive as their mischievous nature rubbed off on Kayla and she grows up to be some kind of a delinquent.

Mikayla joined the Loonatics completely by accident - while walking home from a rough day at her job as a retail worker she got caught up in a villain attack. The stress caused her to unleash her powers taking out the villain in the process. The team saw this and tried to talk to her but she disappears. They spend the next week looking for her and they find her and go to her house. Ace offers her a spot on the team but she declined expressing no interest in joining a hero team. She already had a job and goal, and didn't want extra stress of juggling so much stuff. Disappointed they leave but say a spot is always open for her. Mikayla moves on with her life, dealing with her shitty job and sadness that the Warners don't visit as often anymore because of their busy schedule.

Later Optimatus would find out Zadavia hiding out on Earth and tracks her down. He also learns that Norah is still around and looks for her, and that was how he learned thay Norah had a baby - his heir - and by finding his heir he could mould them in his image. He takes Norah hostage, so Mikayla runs to the Loonatics for help. They go to rescue Norah and come across Zadavia in person for the first time. She explains the situation and tells Mikayla her power is a trait of the Royal Family - which likely means Optimatus had a child on Earth and that child is her.

At Optimatus's ship Norah doesn't recognize the cyborg before her and demands answers. The cyborg reveals himself to be her former lover and that he recently found out about his child. He explained that after Martians attacked him, and learning they and other worlds had a history of conquest, he felt he needed to do something about the constant wars and resolved to fight fire with fire. He had already taken over Freleng and used its power to conquer "problem worlds." Horrified Norah argued that he could end up destroying everyone including himself if he continued down this path. The Tyrant counters that he's doing it to protect her, their child and the universe. He already had a meteorite set up to strong arm Earth's leaders into surrendering. Just then Loonatics and Mikayla crash the place and get into a fight with Optimatus's henchmen. Mikayla rushes over to free her mom only to be accosted by Optimatus. He tells her he is her father but to his shock she responded that she already knew - her aunt Zadavia told her the truth. Besides she always regarded Yakko and Wakko as sort of father figures so it's jarring to find out that her biological father is a space tyrant and she won't stand for that. Angry Optimatus tries to take her hostage but Zadavia intervenes and they get into a fight. It takes the whole team and Mikayla to take him down and stop the meteorite from destroying the planet. They manage to defeat him and they lock him up.

Of course Mikayla doesn't forget her adopted relatives the Warners. Whenever they're in town they always take the time to visit her and Norah.

Zadavia stays to mentor with her newfound niece, so she's a lot more in the picture than in canon, actively helping the team in person while Mikayla teaches her aunt Earth culture. Overtime Mikayla learns to be more responsible since Zadavia legitimizes her as Crown Princess of Freleng, and she finds a place on the Loonatics Team. Norah struggled to understand how the man she once loved become like that and had reservations about Mikayla being a superhero so after a long talk with Zadavia Norah decides to let Mikayla be if ot meant helping her cope with her powers. Norah actually ends up moving to Freleng to help its people recover from Optimatus's rule.

2020 Gameological Awards

Over on the Gameological Discord, we have an annual tradition of writing up our games of the year not as a ranked list but rather as answers to a series of prompts. Here are my personal choices for the year that was 2020.

Favorite Game of the Year

I didn’t know what to expect when I walked into Paradise Killer. I knew that I liked the vaporwave resort aesthetic from the game’s trailer and figured I was in for a Danganronpa-style murder mystery visual novel with an open-ended murder mystery at its core. Those assumptions were… half-right? The game definitely plays out like the exploration bits of Danganronpa set on the island from Myst but with far simpler puzzles. What I didn’t expect was to fall so deeply in love with the environment—its nooks and crannies, its millennia of lore, its brutalist overlap of idol worship, consumerism, and mass slaughter. It makes sense that the world of Paradise Killer is its strongest feature, since the cast of NPCs don’t really move around, leaving you alone with the world for the overwhelming majority of your experience as you bounce back and forth between digging around for clues and interrogating potential witnesses. And despite what the promo materials indicated, there IS a definitive solution to the crimes you’re brought in to investigate, the game just lets you make judgment based on whatever evidence you have at the time you’re ready to call it a day, so if you’re missing crucial evidence you might just make a compelling enough case for the wrong person and condemn them to eternal nonexistence. Am I happy with the truth at the end of the day? No, and neither is anybody else I’ve spoken to who completed the game, but we all were also completely enthralled the entire time and our dissatisfaction has less to do with the game and more to do with the ugly reality of humanity. I’ve always been of the mindset that “spoilers” are absolute garbage and that a story should be just as good whether you know the twist or not and any story that relies on surprising the audience with an unexpected reveal is not actually that good a story, but Paradise Killer is a game about piecing together your own version of events so I feel that it’s vital to the gameplay experience that people go in knowing as little as possible and gush all about it afterwards. Just trust me, if the game looks even remotely intriguing to you, go for it. I’ve had just as much fun talking about the game after I finished it with friends just getting started as I did actually solving its mysteries myself.

Best Single Player Game

I honestly missed out on the buzz for In Other Waters at launch, so I’m happy I had friends online talking it up as Black Friday sales were coming along. The minimal aesthetic of his underwater exploration game allows the focus to shift more naturally to the game’s stellar writing as a lone scientist goes off in search of her mentor and the secrets they were hiding on an alien world. It only took a few hours for me to become completely absorbed in this narrative and keep pushing forward into increasingly dangerous waters. In Other Waters might just be the best sci-fi story I experienced all year and I’d highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys sci-fi novels, regardless of their experience with video games.

Best Multiplayer Game

Look, we all know this year sucked. 2020 will absolutely be chronicled in history books as a fascinating and deeply depressing time in modern history where we all stayed inside by ourselves and missed our friends and family. It was lonely and it was bleak. Which is why it made my heart glow so much more warmly every time I got a letter from an honest-to-goodness real-life friend in Animal Crossing New Horizons. Knowing that they were playing the same game I was and hearing about their experiences and sending each other wacky hats or furniture, it lightened the days and made us feel that little bit more connected. Sure, when the game first launched we would actually take the time to visit one another’s islands, hang out, chat in real-time, and exchange gifts, but we all eventually got busy with Zoom calls, sourdough starters, and watching Birds of Prey twenty-two times. Still, sending letters was enough. It was and still is a touching little way to show that we’re here for one another, if not at the exact same time.

Favorite Ongoing Game

Zach Gage is one of my favorite game designers right now, and when I heard he was releasing a game called Good Sudoku I was sold sight unseen. The game as released was… fine. It’s sudoku and it’s pleasant, but it was also buggy and overheated my phone in a way I hadn’t seen since Ridiculous Fishing (also by Zach Gage) seven years ago. Thankfully, the most glaring bugs have been fixed and I can now enjoy popping in every day for some quick logic puzzle goodness. Daily ranked leaderboards keep me coming back again and again, the steady ramp of difficulty in the arcade and eternal modes means I can always chase the next dopamine rush of solving increasingly complex puzzles. It’s not a traditional “ongoing” game the way, say, Fortnite and Destiny are, but I’m happy to come back every day for sudoku goodness.

Didn't Click For Me

With Fortnite progressively losing me over the course of 2020, finalizing with my wholesale “never again” stance after Epic boss Tim Sweeney compared Fortnite demanding more money from Apple to the American Civil Rights movement (no, absolutely not), I dipped my toe into a number of new “battle pass”-style online arena types of games, and while Genshin Impact eventually got its hooks into me, Spellbreak absolutely did not. With graphics straight out of The Dragon Prince and the promise of a wide variety of magic combat skills to make your character your own, the game seemed awfully tempting, but my first few experiences were aimless and joyless, with no moment of clarity to make me understand why I should keep coming back. Maybe they’ll finesse the game some more in 2021, or a bunch of my friends will get hooked and lure me back, but for now I am a-okay deleting this waste of space on my Switch and PC.

"Oh Yeah, I Did Play That Didn't I?"

I remember being really excited for Murder By Numbers. Ace Attorney-style crime scene investigation visual novel with Picross puzzles for the evidence, art by the creators of Hatoful Boyfriend, and music by the composer of Ace Attorney itself?! Sounds like a dream come true. But the pixel-hunt nature of the crime scene investigations was more frustrating than fun, the picross puzzles were not particularly great, and the game came out literally a week before the entire world went into lockdown which makes it feel more like seven years ago than just earlier this year. I remember being marginally charmed by the game once it was in my hands, but as soon as my mind shifted to long-term self care, Murder By Numbers went from hot topic to cold case.

Most Unexpected Joy

I was looking forward to Fuser all year. As a dyed-in-the-wool DropMix stan, the prospect of a spiritual sequel to DropMix on all major digital platforms without any of the analogue components was tremendously exciting, and I knew I’d have a lot of fun making mixes by myself and posting them online for the world to hear. What I didn’t expect, however, was the online co-op mode to be such a blast! Up to four players take turns making 32 bars of mashups, starting with whatever the player before handed them and adding their own fingerprints on top. It sounds like it should just be a mess of cacophony, but every session I’ve played so far has been just the best dance party I’ve had all year, and everyone not currently in control of the decks (including an audience of spectators) can make special requests for what the DJ should spin and tap along with the beat to great super-sized emoji to show how much they’re enjoying the mix. Literally the only times my Apple Watch has ever warned me of my heightened heart rate have been the times I was positively bouncing in place rocking out to co-op freestyle play in Fuser.

Best Music

Only one video game this year had tunes that were so bumpable they were upgraded to my general “2020 jams” playlist alongside Jeff Rosenstock, Run the Jewels, and Phoebe Bridgers, and that game was Paradise Killer. 70% lo-fi chill beats to study/interrogate demons to, 20% gothic atmospheric bangers, 10% high-energy pop jazz, this soundtrack was just an absolute joy to swim around in both in and out of gameplay.

Favorite Game Encounter

It’s wild that in a landscape where games let me live out my wildest fantasies, the single moment that lit me up in a way that stood out to me more than any other was serving Neil the right drink in Coffee Talk. Over the course of the game, you serve a variety of hot drinks to humans, werewolves, vampires, orcs, and more, all while chatting with your customers and learning more about their lives and relationships. The most mysterious customer, though, is an alien life form who adopts the name Neil. They do not know what they want to drink and claim it doesn’t make a difference because they cannot taste it. Everybody else wants *something*. Neil is just ordering for the sake of fitting in and exploring the Earth experience. It’s only in the second playthrough that attentive baristas will figure out what to serve Neil, unlocking the “true” ending in the process. Seeing the typically stoic Neil actually emote when they tasted their special order drink? What an absolute treat that was.

Best Free DLC of the Year

It’s still only a couple of days old at the time I’m writing this, but Marvel’s Avengers just added Kate Bishop, aka Hawkeye, and THANK GOODNESS. Almost every character in the game at launch just smashed the endless waves of robot baddies with their fists and that looks exhausting and uncomfortable. Hawkeye (the game calls her Kate Bishop, but come on, she’s been Hawkeye in the comics for over 14 years, let’s show her some respect) uses A SWORD. FINALLY! Aside from that, I’m just having a blast shooting arrows all over the place. She and Ms Marvel are the most likable characters in the game so far, so I hope they keep adding more of the Young Avengers and Champions to the game, and if the recently announced slate of Marvel movies and tv shows are any indication (with America Chavez, Cassie Lang, and Riri Williams all coming soon to the MCU), that seems to be what Marvel is pushing for across all media

Most Accessible Game

Nintendo is, first and foremost, a toy company. They got their start in toys and cards long before video games was a thing, and they still do more tests to ensure their video game hardware is childproof than anybody else in the industry (remember how they made Switch cartridges “taste bad” so kids wouldn’t eat them?). This year, Nintendo got to rekindle some of their throwback, simplistic, toys-and-cards energy with Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics, a Switch collection of timeless family-friendly games like Chess, Mancala, and Backgammon, along with “toy” versions of sports like baseball, boxing, and tennis for a virtual parlor room of pleasant time-wasters. The games were all presented with charming li’l explainers from anthropomorphic board game figurines, and the ability to play quick sessions of Spider Solitaire on the touch screen while I binged The Queen’s Gambit on Netflix made Clubhouse Games one of my most-played titles of the year. Plus, local play during socially-distant friend hangs was an excellent way to make us feel like we were much closer than we were physically allowed to be as friends knocked each other’s block off in the “toy boxing” version of Rock’em Sock’em Robots.

"Waiting for Game-dot"

I get that everyone loves Disco Elysium. I saw it on everyone’s year-end lists last year. I finally bought it with an Epic Games Store coupon this year. This year was a long enough slog of depressing post-apocalyptic drudgery, I didn’t want to explore a whole nother one in my leisure time. I’ll get to it… someday.

Game That Made Me Think

Holovista was an iPhone game I played over the course of two or three days based on the recommendation of some trusted colleagues on Twitter and oh my goodness was I glad that I played it. What starts as a chill vaporwave photography game steadily progresses into an exploration of psychological trauma, relationships with friends and family, and the baggage we carry with us from our pasts. In this exceptionally hard year, I badly needed this story about spending time alone with your personal demons and finding your way back to the people who love and support you. Just like with Journey and Gone Home, I walked away from Holovista feeling a rekindled appreciation for the people in my life.

-Princess Embyr (age 20) is the heir to the kingdom of Nydor, with some rather intriguing origins compared to some of her peers. Born out of wedlock with an appearance greatly differing from the average Nydorian citizen (as they'd usually be more gaunt-looking with muted haircolors, Embyr's thicker shape and bright red hair made her easily stand out among them), there were rumors spreading that Embyr could've possibly had a Daemon (who are said to be the dark counterparts of Fae Saints) as her father through some "unholy union". Neither Embyr nor her mother Vira ever confirmed/denied these rumors, as what mattered most was that they both lived in relative peace and comfort even in the ominous environments of their home country. As Embyr got older and her magic became more volatile, her protective mother reluctantly agreed to let her little girl attend St. Ravilda's to better-hone said magic. Though Embyr could easily be counted among the stronger students with her being cast as a "Meteor Mage" (allowing her to summon explosive balls of magic energy in combat), Embyr's bigger interests more lie with being an up-and-coming model... wanting to show the world that even someone who comes from a "scary" region like Nydor can exemplify beauty and grace as well as any other pretty-face celeb. To others, Embyr is known for being a pretty fun-loving and chill girl to be around... though if pushed enough even she can show her snarky mischevious side, almost coming across as a "cool big sis" figure . Was fairly popular among her peers at Ravilda's, with even Prym deep down considering Embyr one of her first "girl crushes" (though it didn't lead to anything else beyond a crush, as the girls are now mere casual friends at best). As much as she likes to look her best with a "sexy goth" appeal, Embyr herself actually identifies more on the Gray-Ace sexuality spectrum (though wouldn't mind a more romantic relationship if prompted for it). -Prince Alyx (age 16) is the heir to the kingdom of Kronia, and is the only one currently still in school as he's in his middle-late years of Ravilda's. A top student he is in terms of grade point average and studies... though as far as socializing is concerned, he's basically a total mess. Mostly spending his days huffing away like a snooty brat from everyone, preferring to stay indoors in his own personal "lab" while not really caring much for keeping himself "neat and tidy-looking", even for his royal status at home. His mothers tend to be pretty coddling and baby-ing over him, leaving him nothing short of embarrassed enough to try and find a way to make his own path now that he's alone at school. Then at the end of the war, she ended up trapped in the world behind the mirror, and you were alone. This experience has shaped you in a lot of ways.

And in some ways, it's made you more distant. You were never very good at connecting with people, but since she left, it's been even harder.

You're the coolest of the cool, but you're alone, and nobody really gets how hard that is.

You went into the Outside for a while after she left.

You trained for a year and a day to unlock the true power of your soul. It caught fire from all that training, and that fire drives you, gives you power, keeps you going even when things are looking really bad.

They're trying to make you into something that you're not.

They're trying to corrupt you with bleak intent and turn you against everything you know and hold dear.

They have difficulties making friends, which are probably either the same as your difficulties, or the exact opposite.

Whatever your medical condition is, they're probably going to pick up the same condition, or something similar.

Step 8: Choose Your Connections

You don't really have any friends, so this section isn't terribly relevant to you!

But so that you don't leave this section empty-handed, let's say that maybe you have the following Connections:

• Ayako/Itsuki Kamiki 1. They're your rival, which means you at least sort of know them, right?

Talk to the other players about your relationship with their characters. If someone agrees that you should feel comfortable around their PC and have a fair amount of knowledge about how to take care of them, you can get a free level 1-2 Connection to their character as well! You can improve these Connections later, if you want.

Knowing you though, you probably don't have Connections to the other PCs, but you'll likely be picking them up in your first Arc or two.

I'm sorry about this! It sucks!

But that's the way it is for you.

Step 9: Review Your Powers

Your soul is on fire. You don't know very much about how to use that power right now, but it's a thing.

• Your flaw gets in the way of you being happy. This isn't so much of a power as it's a bad thing, but there's also some cool stuff that can happen because of it, so let's call it a power, okay?

• You're miraculously good at taking care of yourself day-to-day. You always look impeccable. Your clothes are always clean. Your hair is always perfect. It's almost supernatural. If this doesn't sound terribly useful, that's because it's not, but it'll get more useful over time, as you train and get stronger and stronger.

ITH Medieval AU

Hey @pika-ace remember how you told me OH so long ago about this idea? Medieval times, right? Well, consider this my gift to you, b/c I love you and you deserve the best so I kind of went wild with this one.

OK see here's what I did; considering that there's the Fantasy AU very heavily based on magic/and the supernatural, I figured that a more historically based AU would be interesting for a Medieval one. So, with a bit of dabbling in research, let's say the time period is centred more so around the 1300's, in that space between the High and Late Middle Ages.  Now, for the sake of the AU, some historical events are rushed or just happen at a different time than historically recorded; it's just to selfishly move the plot along b/c oh boy shit happened. Do note that the actual historical events don't HAVE TO be the real ones. Like at some point I bring up the Hundred Years War; it doesn't have to be the Hundred Years War. And as much as I've tried, there's sure to be historical misinterpretations on my part, and I ask you to forgive me if that is the case as you read on Setting: Vaguely European? A great deal of this AU is based on the European Middle Ages, and the historical events mainly surround Europe, but like I never explicitly state any locations so....? It's up to you if you want to leave it all vague or not. Also catch me with that symbolism yo. (Seriously if you want to ask me questions about places, details I included, things that happen; there's probably a symbolic reason behind it or a parallel somewhere)

Vanessa

Peasant turned knight

Came from a small farming family, part of a larger community owned by an ageing Lord

Father was a knighted commoner => taught Vanessa how to properly use a sword and told her stories of brave knights who fought off hordes of foes => gets sent off as part of a militia against another Lord and dies in combat

The conquest of the manor and the Great Famine of 1315-17 forces them off the land and move into another manor => that's when Vanessa meets Nina

Vanessa's mother, struck by grief at the loss of her husband and of their one mode of income

Vanessa, fueled by spite and anger, tired of being reduced to meagre peasantry jobs, decides she's going to work for knighthood

She and Nina are probably 12-13 at this point => Nina sees Vanessa from the church doors playing with some boys and she's curious => at some point they run into each other in front of a statue of St. Michael (foreshadowing if ya squint) and they talk, Vanessa reveals that she's trying to be a knight, and Nina wants to help her

Nina cuts Vanessa's hair (not too short now but just enough b/c she can't wear her own armour yet) and she teaches Vanessa how to read and write, and they both spy on boys to copy their mannerisms

Vanessa manages to get the attention of an old knight who's interested in seeing this youngster grow (he's probably going to be an original character) => he knows Vanessa's a girl in disguise but he doesn't mind all that much really; she can fight and she's got guts and that's all that matters => he teaches her huntsman/military stuff, and makes her his Squire

It's when she becomes his apprentice/Squire where she starts wearing armour, esp. the closed helmet to hide her face.

As a Squire she has to master the "Seven Points of Agilities" (riding, swimming, wrestling, fencing, stuff like that ALL WHILE WEARING ARMOUR) => Vanessa gets buff af 

She gets knighted at 19 (the actual age is around 21 but a Squire can be knighted earlier)

She establishes herself and reputation in a jousting tournament (the thing with the horses and the lances and you gotta knock the other knight off) => See here's the thing about tournaments; knights can get injured and/or die in these things => her mentor is probably injured during a melee (it's like a free for all where the last knight standing wins) and she takes his place during the joust and wins => eventually she may earn herself a place in the Lord's Court (opportunity to get further acquainted w/ Benny who's also a knight)

(I LOVE the idea of Vanessa saving Usnavi so!) => First time she meets Usnavi she saves him from rowdy riff-raff who where threatening w/ violence and she makes it a thing to visit and protect him from trouble and potential accidents (you'll see why), extends to keeping Sonny out of trouble => in return Usnavi offers "the mysterious knight" food and a bed if she ever needs it

She ends up taking in Sonny as her Squire (he got into some serious trouble with the authorities; the church or the Lordship, one or the other or both, Pete was involved)

Nina and the Rosarios

Family of metalworkers; Kevin's a blacksmith and Camilla fashions/repairs jewellery

Nina's in training to enter the clergy => both Kevin and Camilla know it'll elevate Nina's social status and the Catholic schooling will give her something of an education => the hope is that Nina one day will be the church Abbess (kind of like Head Nun, the "Mother" if you will)

They made Nina a simple rosary with a little gold cross as the pendant; she wears it on her wrist all the time

She's so modest and humble, not just b/c of the religious teachings but also b/c she's grown surrounded by people who respect her mind but know she'll never actually become anything b/c she's female 

Nina wants to be more so involved with the political happenings

Hell, if the writers wanted to be really ambitions, make him non-binary, as that could have possibly worked into the matriarchal and religious themes as well. Two, the fix that would have required an actual understanding of how social constructs affect how people act, and how matriarchal influences would be vastly different from patriarchal ones–entirely rewrite his character. Write him to be a man who truly grew up in a matriarchal society, who truly has a deep level of respect for women because of the culture he grew up in teaching him that women were to be respected. This would have changed how he treats Athena entirely, and would have changed other aspects throughout the game.
