she/they in a many-headed dragon way
Some of our friends were talking about coat of genders so we wanted to make one! The idea for coat of genders is originally from Orion Scribner, but the original posts of theirs are no longer there. We did link a reblog below! The basic idea is this is a "...form of heraldry, in which each person can create their own coat of arms to describe their gender identity and expression."
We didn't keep it super traditional, but went with the flow and were inspired by elements of it. The full description of our process/symbols is below the read more.
Overall: Before we starting sketching this, we had never really thought all that much about our gender. One of the things we decided early on is that we wanted to keep the design simpler as a nod to that. We also wanted a lot of feminine elements, but have them be depicted in neutral or masculine colors. Conveniently the colors we had in mind and liked also make up the aro/ace flag! Early on we wrote down a few words that we based the rest of the symbols off of: power, justice, honesty, independence and potential.
Color Palate: Blue and gold were always going to make an appearance. Gold is more or less our system color after all! Besides that, it also represents power, success, achievement while at the same time being a warm, inviting color. On the other hand, blue represents truth, confidence and creativity. White is a nice neutral/calm color that really makes the shield say "egg." The lighter blue lozenges is us incorporating another one of the feminine shapes, but in a pattern reminiscent of the ermine fur pattern.
Shield: In Orion's original gender heraldry post (a reblog of it as the original is no longer there) they list ovals as a feminine shape. The egg is very similar, but more bottom-heavy and "pointed." There's probably a ton of symbolism we could go into with the egg, but we first thought of using one because our first bonding activity as a system was playing Ark together and stealing other wyverns' eggs. So it's partially another nod to being a system of draconics. It's a huge symbol for potential because the egg has yet to hatch and can become anything.
Motto: We were so close to making it "she/they, many-headed dragon way." In the end, we went with this motto because it's more representative of the way we try to live our lives.
Supporters: Of course there had to be dragons somewhere! Our supporters are two golden dragons coiling over and protecting their egg. We didn't want to clutter the design so we decided to only have two dragons. The features on the dragons themselves are a mix of all of our system members' features put together. The original sketch of ours that they are from have them forming an infinity sign.
Other Decor: The oak leaves and acorn were the first things we sketched onto our egg. They're our favorite local tree and the oak savannas and woodlands near where we live are beautiful. Oak trees are towering, powerful trees that symbolize resolve and strength of spirit. The acorn on it's own is a symbol of good luck and potential which is amplified by the leaves of the full-grown tree alongside it.
Charger: We're kemetic and the ostrich is a shout out to Ma'at's feather of truth that hearts are weighed against in the afterlife. Also it matches our fursona who is a flightless gryphon. Which we could have used a gryphon for, but then the flightless aspect wouldn't have been as strong. It's a representation of adapting to your circumstances and finding new ways to continue to thrive.
