Hey folk - I don't have a tip jar or anything for the blog, but I do support it and the general research work I do through Patreon! If you're appreciative of the content I produce here, even a $1 pledge would be a huge help.
This Patreon supports not just the blog, but the time I spend studying animal legislation, litigation, and regulation, the conferences I attend, and the formal research papers I publish. I don't get any external funding for my work, and it's all done in addition to my day job as a freelance fact-checker.
Right now, I'm working on three separate original research projects, all of which I plan to submit for publication in a peer-reviewed academic journal. Patreon funding is what pays for the time it takes to do this extensive, in-depth data collection and analysis, as well as write the paper and pay the (very high) fees to publish it open-access where anyone can read it for free.
The current papers in progress are:
An examination of all the different ways zoo businesses are defined in the United States, and why it matters (legally, practically, within the industry itself, etc).
An examination of the different definitions of an animal "sanctuary", and why it's so complicated and often confusing.
A cross-comparison of the standards and policies of all five major zoo and sanctuary accrediting groups in the United States, categorized by topic and publicly available as an interactive spreadsheet.
In the interest of total transparency, because it matters to me: I struggled to update the Patreon for a long time, and I want to recognize that- sometimes I feel like shouldn't promote it now, because of that past difficulty. When I was newer to the field and this work, I was really uncomfortable talking about work that wasn't finished, or that dealt with sensitive industry politics. I also over-committed on perks, especially with regards to trying to send out physical rewards (stickers). I put a lot of thought into what to offer on Patreon before advertising it again to address that. I've found my footing regarding comfort levels for what, when, and how much I share as well. I've committed to updating my patrons monthly - and hopefully more frequently! To those of you that supported me through that struggle-bus period: I cannot thank you enough. It got me where I am today, and I wanted to acknowledge that.

How To Make Money Online
These days, online jobs and education opportunities are quite popular. People love to work from home, and the internet is exploding with money-making opportunities. How can you fit into this new popular niche? Let's explore!
Working online does not impose the same time restrictions as working in an office or brick-and-mortar store. You don’t have to adhere to strict dress codes or company policies. Often, you don’t even have to interact face-to-face with clients, customers or co-workers. This can be especially nice for independent spirits or introverts.
Not having to go to an office affords people a lot of freedom and autonomy. Imagine working in your pajamas! If you need to take off to get your kids for an activity, you can do that without having to call your boss and arrange to leave the office. Your attendance is up to you as you set your own hours. Often, you can leave the computer for a spell to get things done and then return to work when you are ready.

Writing some reviews and working on revisions today and realized a lot of folks probably aren’t aware of the hilariously messed-up process of academic publishing, so here’s how it typically goes for me:
1. Have a good, sciencey idea! If something is going to be published, it has to contribute to the overall scientific knowledge of your field in some way. Often this is the classic set-up of: “I have a theory. I ran an experiment to test that theory. Here’s what I found.”
2. Get a sense of which journal would be a good fit. Journals like Science and Nature have a massive general readership but an abysmal acceptance rate (and their broad scope means you’re competing with an absurd range of research topics). Smaller, more specialized journals may reach a higher percentage of your desired subfield’s audience, but those articles might also just vanish under the waves or keep you away from interdisciplinary collaborations. There are plenty of (even more) predatory journals out there that will publish your work with basically no oversight, and will be a black mark on your CV. Some research is important here, and I usually work out where I want to submit before writing any more than an outline.
3. Find the style guide for your desired journal. Oh god. It’s a mess. I learned LaTeX (a typesetting system) because a lot of journals in my field have a downloadable template to use. If you use Word, may god have mercy on your soul.
4. Write! This is the most fun part for me. In my field, a paper is typically a ~250-word abstract (sell your work to people skimming through!), a ~7,500-word paper, and maybe around 15 figures (never realized my science career would require so much graphic design knowledge!). Some journals will let you include supplemental material like animations that can be accessed online, and most now require that you provide all necessary data to allow someone to reproduce your results.
5. Get the coauthors on board. If I’m writing, I’m generally going to be the first author on the paper, and I want to make sure everyone gets proper attribution. In my field, first author is generally the one who did the most writing and editing (in an academic setting, this should always be the graduate student, even if they maybe got a lot of extra help on writing), with the remaining order of authors not really mattering (except, again in academia, it’s usually traditional for the grad student’s supervisor to be the last author). This varies hugely by field. The criteria for deciding who gets authorship is also really, really complicated and tied in to research ethics. I’ve given coauthorship to people who provided me with their own hard-to-find datasets, even though technically their contribution to the paper was just sending one e-mail with an attachment, because gathering all that data was instrumental to the study, even if they didn’t have my study in mind when they did it. Regardless, this is the stage where I send the paper to the coauthors and let them review it. This can be pretty intense and result in a lot of edits and back-and-forth until everyone feels good attaching their name to it. I’ve had this take two weeks, and I’ve had it take almost a year. Varies a lot.
6. Submit the paper to the journal. At this point, they’ll have you sign a cost estimate, which is basically saying, “I’m willing to pay a few thousand dollars to have this published.” Yes, you pay them for the privilege of publishing in their journal. Academic grant applications usually have a section for publication funding, so it’s unlikely to be coming out of your pockets directly, but that’s still an awful lot of money. There’s generally a charge per page, and then a different charge per figure. I’ve seen online-only journals that charge extra for color figures. Explain that one to me. (In my field, a couple of open-access journals that charge nothing or only a nominal processing fee are starting to gain interest, but pubs in these journals are often excluded from the metrics of publication prowess that may determine whether or not you get a promotion, so the only folks who can afford to publish in them are the ones who are already well-established. What a racket.)
7. After an initial okay from an editor (who is an unpaid volunteer), the paper is sent to three reviewers (also unpaid volunteers). Their job is to pick the paper apart (anonymously, so it can get nasty) and come up with a final recommendation: accept (basically doesn’t happen on the first round of reviews), accept pending minor revisions that won’t need a second round of reviewing (rare, but might occur), accept pending major revisions that will need a second round of reviews (most common), or reject (which also includes transferring to another journal that might be a better fit). This stage usually takes about 6 weeks with the journals I submit to, and the reply will often be several thousand words of reviews. The editor takes these three reviews and decides on the final verdict.
8. Revisions! Every single change you make (right down to fixing a typo) must be written out in an accompanying document, along with the precise line number and justification. Every sentence your reviewers write must be addressed. You can argue or defend yourself, but this is often the stage of scoffing at a suggestion for a while and then going “....aw man you right”. I’ve had comments that forced me to remake every single figure in the paper, and rewrite half the analysis along the way. My revision changelogs/justifications have, in the past, been longer than the paper (once almost 10,000 words).
9. Send those revisions to the coauthors and make sure you’re on the same page. This is often a bit of a hell of “I totally disagree with this reviewer and think you shouldn’t have given in on this one” and “I’m fine with your replies to these reviews, but while you’re here, let’s completely change this...” Cobble something together and throw it back to the journal. This stage can take up to a couple months. Often for this step, I send out the paper to all coauthors and give a hard deadline for either a reply or a request for more time---often coauthors who are only tangentially involved in the project are cool with just stepping back and letting the revised paper go through as-is.
10. Another round of reviews! If you’ve got that “major revisions” marker, your revised paper and replies go out to the same reviewers, again with that six-week deadline for their reviews. If you’re down to just “minor revisions”, the editor will take a look. If needed, another round of revisions will happen, followed by a third review if your revisions are still considered “major”. If things still aren’t working by then, the editor will generally intervene.
11. Pay that $$$$. Your paper goes into early online release (basically just the unformatted version your reviewers saw) after a week or so, and then after a month or so a nicely formatted and typeset version goes into circulation. From submission to final publication, in my experience four to eight months is pretty standard. I’m getting a lot better at writing a whole paper in only a couple weeks to balance that out. Also getting better at having several papers in different stages of this process simultaneously!
12. Lather, rinse, repeat.
Again, just to emphasize, this is what it’s like in my little corner of my field, publishing in a small subset of journals. I’ve reviewed for a dozen different journals at this point, and there are a lot of variations on this theme! The whole process is weird as heck and frequently soul-crushing, but there you have it.

8 TIPS FOR MAKING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR UNIVERSITY EXPERIENCE!
Deciding to become a university student is a huge investment of both time and money. You don't want to start only to have to drop out due to finances or failing grades. You also don't want to finish and find that all you have is a piece of paper with mountains of debt and no job prospects.
The average cost of a 4-year Bachelor's degree is about $36k at a public university, and about $136k at a private university. Google the yearly cost of your school of choice, then multiply by 4. Then add on about 5k for the additional costs of books and travel fees, clothing, and other miscellaneous. Then add on about 10k for the interest that your student loan debt will incur! 😫
The average cost of graduate degrees can vary by school and concentration, but can easily cost over 90k for tuition alone. Student loan debt is not a joke! Invest your time wisely while you're in school so you don't end up regretting your decision and sharecropping your life away in some 9-5 that you hate.
So, here are my tips for making the most of your time as a university student! Whether you're in undergrad or graduate school, I hope this advice helps you! I'm not going to give you the basic "go to every single class" bullshit. While that's undoubtedly good advice, I want to be a bit more practical and dig a little deeper. I think if you're paying for an experience like college, it's obvious that you should attempt to be as immersed in that experience as possible. You're not going to pay for entrance to a water park then stay off the slides and out of the pool, are you? No, you're going to jump in and go on as many rides as possible! At university, you're paying for school, so you need to treat it the same way. If you're paying for a class, obviously you should go as often as you possibly can. So in the hopes that I can be practical without being trite, I'm going to address the finer details of the college experience. From the perspective of a woman who's in the process of finishing her 2nd Master's degree (at an Ivy League school, no less), you can take it or leave it!
1. Update your resume as soon as you commit to a school and give them your deposit.
As soon as you've paid the deposit to the school of your choose and sent back your decision letter, go ahead and update your resume. If you don't have a resume, make one now! There are plenty of templates online you can follow.
Include your new school and anticipated graduation date under the "Education" section. (You can add it to your social media bios too, if you're into that sort of thing.) The truth of the matter is, the moment you pay the deposit to the school, you've paid for the brand name. You might as well start wielding and wearing it ASAP! This will help you as you apply for internships for the summer after high school and during your freshman year of college.
2. Once on campus, join clubs and student associations.
This is super important! So much of college is about networking. Once you graduate and leave campus, your college network can help you find jobs, travel, keep you up to date with learning opportunities/conferences, or even help you settle into to a new city. It's important to make authentic connections with people on campus outside of your immediate friend group, and a great way to do that is through common interest clubs or associations. Attend a programs fair and check your school's websites and message boards to find events.
Once you've decided which clubs you want to join, make sure to introduce yourself to the leadership! By getting to know the club leaders, you can make sure you'll always know what's next for the group so that you can take part and continue to build community.
3. Spend as much time as you can at the library and in other public study spaces on/around campus.
Most university libraries will have cafés, help desks, computer labs, and even group study areas. Often it's okay to talk in the group study areas, so you can always take a break from studying and do a bit of socializing when you need to. When you need more privacy or quiet space, it's typically available just a room or a floor away! Bring healthy snacks like carrots and almonds and chocolate-covered espresso beans or raisins to keep you energized and alert.
Studying is obviously an important part of being in college. You don't want to get into the job field without fluency in the language/jargon or requisite content knowledge that is necessary to succeed!
4. Use the "free" time to develop your genuine interests and hobbies.
If you have the time and don't have a ton of responsibility to other people in your family, take advantage of that! You likely won't have a lot of time like that in your life again. Use this period to follow your curiosities and your interests. Make art! Join an intramural sport! Experiment with fashion! Work part-time in a place you never thought you would! The possibilities are endless. As my dad would say, "It's your world, squirrel!" (He's really corny.)
5. Be as discerning as possible with the classes you take - you are paying for each of them, after all!
Take classes that really interest you, with professors you truly want to learn from. Read the class descriptions carefully, and do research on the professors. Try to get professors that have great ratings, multiple publishings in reputable journals, books, and websites, and a good track records of helping students.
Many colleges have core curricula that you must complete to graduate. If the classes in your core don't interest you, see if you can find ways to navigate the system so that there's a silver lining or so you can make the best out of them. Always give it a shot, you may find that you're more interested once you attend than you were by reading the description alone.
Even if the class isn't of interest, the people there probably are - especially if everyone has to take it! Whether that's ensuring you get the best professor that's offered or finding a great group of friends to struggle through it with, get to know the people around you. Maybe you decide to develop a working relationship with the TA by attending office hours and asking questions about how to contextualize the content in a way that's more engaging for you or more aligned with your interests. To do this, just explain your interests or proposed field of study and ask them for examples of how you can transfer the knowledge you're learning in class toward your interest.
Another option is seeing if you can take the class pass/fail. If this is possible and the class isn't aligned with what you feel your true academic interests are, then don't expend too much effort. Attend lecture, pass the class, and devote your time to your other interests. (This is an option only for people who are serious about not failing the class. Make sure you calculate what scores you'll need to pass exams and other requirements like attendance, and hold yourself accountable to these. Do your absolute best on your papers! Taking a class pass/fail is NOT an excuse to slack off or avoid doing your best work, but it may be a way for you to free up some time if you calculate your grades and find that you don't need to do every single assignment to pass.)
6. If you can find a work-study job or start a side hustle *without* jeopardizing your grades, do so!
Again, the student loans are no joke. I avoid taking them if I can, because I hate debt. Of course, this means I occasionally have had to pay tuition out of my own pocket. I held 3 jobs when I was in undergrad and have always had side hustles even while working 9-5. Many of my favorites have included babysitting, tutoring, pet/house sitting, DJing, and party planning. I know a lot of people in grad school who also worked in restaurants or as delivery drivers, as administrative aids in university offices, law offices, and medical practices. Nowadays, a lot of people work as as influencers, photographers, video editors, and models for their side hustles. I always preferred jobs that were lowkey so I could study. My favorite work-study job was at the library! I always got to see my friends and I could read PDF copies of my assignments while I sat at the circulation desk.
7. Find out about scholarships and fellowships that are offered by different departments in your university.
A lot of fellowships and scholarships are only advertised internally by department and school. Spend time on your department's website and stop by the department office every few weeks to make sure you're up to date on the opportunities that are being offered to students. Become a frequent patron of Financial Aid to see what is available through that office as well.
Additionally, feel free to email the department chair/other professors to ask if they know of any fellowships or scholarship opportunities that may come up in the future so you can be prepared. Ask about qualifications for those as well, so you can plan ahead.
Do your research and make sure you qualify for these opportunities! In writing your essays, attend to each point of criteria laid out in the "call for applications." Treat your essay similarly to how you'd apply for the job. Why are you the right person to receive this money? How do you fulfill the criteria that this scholarship is supporting?
8. If you're struggling with your studies, use the resources on campus that you're *already paying for* in order to get back on track.
This includes TA and professor office hours, peer tutors, the writing center (most universities will have offices that can help you structure and edit your essays, etc.).
Join or create study groups by finding a partner in your class to study with, and ask the university librarians (and your advisor!) what other resources/tutoring/study help is available on campus.
A strong foundation in the content knowledge for your field of choice is a necessity once your graduate. My father always told me, "The key to success is uncommon knowledge." I agree with this somewhat, but I really believe it's actually that the key is an uncommon thirst for mastery. You move forward in your career and your personal development by learning and mastering new levels of skill. The more you know and the better you can communicate, the more respected you'll be in your field - which opens the door to further opportunities. Studying (and studying *well*) is imperative during your time at university!
Good luck this year, scholars! Work smarter & always remember, education is the key! We cannot dismantle the master's house with the master's tools//we are the gold we wanna hold! Go forth & make this school year your bitch!
Xoxo,
Kiki

Why I Deleted My Academia.edu Account and Why You Should, Too
The traditional model of academic publishing restricts access to research by putting it in the hands of private companies. As a result, I’ve had to work hard to make my research available to those who wish to read it. I’ve done so by publishing accessible summaries on this blog, by publishing as much as I can in open-access journals, and by establishing profiles on file-sharing sites like Academia.Edu and ResearchGate, which allow you to store and share full-text uploads of papers with anyone. I will keep doing the first two going forward, but I’ve grown leery of the latter and have increasingly come to realize that these file-sharing websites aren’t an effective solution to the problems of academic publishing. In fact, I’ve grown quite concerned about these sites and have come to realize that academics need to pursue other means of sharing their work. Let me explain.
Before I go on, you may want to read this post first, which explains why I switched to publishing in open-access journals whenever possible. Long story short, academics have historically given their work away to big publishing houses for free (including the copyright to our research papers). The publishers have then turned around and sold our work to libraries and subscribers for exorbitant prices—and kept all the profits to themselves. The end result is that research is typically accessible only to those with the funds to access it. Academics have grown increasingly uncomfortable with this arrangement in recent years because we’re giving our work for free to companies that are severely limiting access to it while making billions of dollars.
By contrast, open-access papers can be freely viewed by anyone with an internet connection. This is great for the general public, which subsidizes most academic research in one form or another anyway. I mean, why should the public pay for research to be conducted, and then have to pay a middleman separately in order to access the results? Open-access is also great for students at universities that don’t have massive library budgets, as well as for scholars in developing countries where research resources are scarce.
Getting back to AcademiaEdu and ResearchGate, these are online repositories where researchers can upload copies of all of their works, which others can freely access. In other words, they provide an avenue for widely sharing research. Of course—and as I noted above—with traditional publishing, we give the copyright to our work away to journal publishers, so we usually can’t upload the final version of our articles without violating copyright law. However, most publishing agreements I’ve seen permit researchers to share the pre-publication version of their papers (i.e., the basic-looking version that you create in Microsoft Word, not the pretty version formatted by the journal. Some will allow you to share the version that has been through peer review; however, others may not).
I painstakingly reviewed all of my previous copyright transfer agreements and, in cases where it was permitted, I uploaded pre-publication versions of my articles to file-sharing sites like AcademiaEdu and ResearchGate.
I guess I was naïve, though. Initially, I thought those sites were solutions to the problem of poor research access. However, I’ve come to learn that these are large and growing for-profit companies that, just like journal publishers, are harvesting free labor from academics. We’re building a massive research infrastructure for them, which they’re turning around and monetizing. These are multi-million dollar companies backed by venture capital firms that see big profit potential.
In supporting companies like AcademiaEdu and ResearchGate, we’re simply transferring power and control over access to research to another set of companies—companies that can and are looking for ways to cash in on that power. For example, AcademiaEdu is currently free to access, but has a “premium” subscription model. I’d bet good money that they’ll eventually start charging everyone for access once they have a big enough repository and user base. That would just put everything back behind a paywall, thereby defeating the purpose of why many of us joined the site in the first place.
I’m also concerned about other ways they’re trying to monetize their site. For example, in 2016, AcademiaEdu toyed with charging users to get their papers “recommended” on the site. Efforts like this would have the effect of pushing self-interest over scientific advancement by giving anyone the opportunity to promote their work regardless of its quality or merit.
So how do we get around the problems that these sites create? Here are a few things you can do:
· Stop investing your time building up places like AcademiaEdu. They’re just taking your free labor and cashing in on it. This is a big part of the reason why I recently deleted my profile with them (I also deleted it because they’re poor at policing intellectual property infringement, but that’s a whole other story). AcademiaEdu and ResearchGate have done a brilliant job marketing themselves as noble causes—places where academics can go to share research—while hiding their real goal, which is building a massive research database curated by the world’s experts that they can cash in on. As I write this, ResearchGate is the 171st and Academia.edu is the 275th most visited website in the entire world. These are incredibly powerful companies we are unwittingly building up and we don’t know what they’re ultimately going to do with the fruits of our labor—other than turn it into a huge profit, of course.
· Unfortunately, there doesn’t yet exist a non-profit equivalent of AcademiaEdu that I’m aware of. However, until that exists, one option is to post pre-prints of your work on a site like PsyArxiv, which is run by the non-profit Center for Open Science. This can at least get your work out there in some form and it will be accessible to anyone online.
· Publish your research in open-access journals whenever possible. This is the best way of ensuring that your work remains free and easy to access for the long run. If an open-access journal requires a fee to publish, try to request a waiver or apply for a grant to cover the costs. I’ve been able to get several open-access papers published without paying one cent. It shouldn’t have to cost academics money to give their research away.
· If your research is locked behind a paywall, review your copyright agreement(s) to see what kinds of information sharing are permissible. Odds are that there’s some version of the paper you can share freely. You can share these versions on your own personal website, put them out on social media, email them to anyone who requests them, and/or store them on professional websites. For example, if you have a profile on a site like the Social Psychology Network, you have a certain amount of storage available for sharing any files you wish.
· Take advantage of institutional repositories. A lot of colleges and universities have them, and depositing your research with them can make it easier for others to access your work. For example, the University of California repository is accessible to everyone, although you must be affiliated with that university to post your work in it.
· Blog about or otherwise publish accessible summaries of your research that the average person can understand. Making academic papers more widely available is great, but they’re often written with so much jargon that only our peers can decipher them. Accessible summaries can help others to better understand our work and why it’s important.
These are just some of the alternatives that exist for getting science out there. We’d all do well to consider investing in them in the interest of ensuring freer and wider access to research for the long haul. If you have other tips or recommendations for sharing research, weigh in with your comments below.

Hello! I have been a huge history nerd for most of my life and recently decided i would like to pursue history as a possible career, by I've recently been discouraged. I've had career counselors at my school and my parents and friends say that I should look to other careers because history simply isn't a lucrative job. I'd really like to know your thoughts since you're a historian. Btw I really look up to you and love your blog! So, thoughts on careers/colleges and the sort?
Aww, haha. You are sweet.
First, I will caveat at the outset that academia is a stressful and often stupid profession, nor is it, indeed, very lucrative. Nobody gets into it because they are expecting to make it rain, or because they enjoy not being constantly in doubt about their future/how things are going to string together/where they are going to end up next/if they will possibly have a full-time job by the time they are in their mid-thirties/etc. For example, I finish my PhD next summer, at which point I will need to immediately start applying for either postdoctoral fellowships, or see if I’m lucky enough to stumble upon that one junior lecturer/assistant research position that wants my exact research interests. Postdoc fellowships could be anywhere from three months to three years. Visiting/junior lectureships are usually for a contract of one or two years. You can string any number of these together (if you’re lucky) until/if you get a permanent position somewhere. This could also and probably will involve moving every year or two, so you don’t really get to settle down for a while. You will have to keep up your career/participation in academia, work to publish papers/go to conferences etc, while also paying the bills somehow. Sometimes the right opportunity falls into your lap, sometimes it doesn’t. You just have to keep grinding and hope that it does.
(And no, the pay is not anything to aspire to. I’m currently junior/doctoral student faculty in the department, teaching one class a semester, and yeah. It’s better if you’re salaried or getting a stipend, and I’m lucky enough to have my full tuition fees paid by scholarship. So if you want to be rich, this is not the job for you. But as ever, it improves as you go, and if you get a permanent position, you will be paid at least enough to live on. So we’re not talking cardboard-box-under-a-bridge levels of poverty.)
If that hasn’t scared you off, then we can go on to what I regard as the most important part. I’m always of the opinion that life is way too short to be doing anything other than what you love and are good at, and if you deliberately pick something you don’t like and don’t have passion for, on the expectation that it will make you money… well, that’s one way to live, and I’m sure people do well for themselves by it. But it sounds exhausting, horrible, and eventually soul-crushing to me, and which is why, despite all the clearly enunciated drawbacks listed above, I’d still rather be doing this than anything else. You don’t get to final-year PhD status (and the clutches of incipient insanity, but never mind that) without really loving it, and I do. I stumbled a bit ass backwardly into doing it as a career, but it really gives me a rush and an enjoyment and a delight which I have to hang onto during the hard sloggy bits or no-money bits or the “oh god it’s 11pm and I’ve been working on my thesis for the last ten hours” bits. And part of that is because in my view, in this current world, historians are more fucking important than ever, and this work really, really matters.
We’ve all remarked upon the way “historical accuracy” is used to justify bad treatment of women in period dramas, or the way narratives of an imagined medieval past are used by right-wing nationalists, or how “that’s totally medieval” is used as a synonym for something barbaric, etc. I always like to say that it astounds me how much people are totally confident they know what the medieval era was like, despite never having learned a thing about it. I’m also a medievalist of the generation that is pushing back and deconstructing medieval history’s previous reputation as a safe place for straight, white, Christian men to write a straight, white, Christian man’s history. I just got the syllabus the other day for the class I’m teaching in the spring semester, and I was totally delighted, because it’s basically the class I would have designed myself. It’s about medieval narratives in the modern world, and touches upon (among other things) the relevance/use of the crusades in the “war on terror,” the treatment of women in medieval fantasy dramas (a la Game of Thrones), the connection to right-wing nationalism and claimed histories and etc – all subjects on which I have written and thought about a lot and also posted about frequently on here. So yes, I can teach the shit out of that class, and trust me, it’s a good feeling when you can walk into work every day and know that you are doing something, however you can, about the terrifying and idiotic shitstorm that is the world right now. You are teaching people how to think about and identify these things and push back on them, and they in turn will teach other people how to do it. It’s an awfully small step, but we have to start somewhere.
History as a career also requires a major educational commitment – 4 years for a bachelor’s degree, 2 years for a master’s, and at least 3 for a PhD. That’s almost ten years at the minimum, assuming you have the means to study full time, and it will involve a lot of writing; I wrote a senior thesis (25 pages/10k words), a master’s thesis (60 pages/20k words), and I’m now working on a doctoral dissertation (~270 pages/100k words), after going through a program that emphasized writing, so I was doing 25-30 page papers for every class as an undergraduate. Especially as you move into postgraduate level, you have to be good about motivating yourself, because your time will be less structured. It is up to you to be the one to make it count, and you will also have to have a memory or at least the capability to use something to remember tons of tiny details. It will involve a lot of close reading of obscure texts, and probably language learning (in my case it’s been Latin and French, also Latin is terrible and nobody likes it and if I was smart, I would have avoided it, but hey). You will also have to have a thick hide, both for constructive criticism and for the constant rejection that comes with it. You will not get positions or university offers or scholarships or awards that you really, really wanted, and it takes a certain resilience to be able to move past that and not let it reflect personally on you and your abilities. It does, however, happen to everyone, so at least we can swallow the bitter Moral of the Story pill together?
Overall, my assessment is that we badly need more intelligent, trained, socially aware, and intersectional historians, and if you want to do it, the constant “but it’s not lucrative!!!” protests shouldn’t put you off. As I said above, it’s a serious commitment, it’s weird and stressful and work-intensive, and if you can see yourself being happy in any other career, you should probably do that instead. Doing something academically and professionally isn’t the same as doing it as a hobby, of course, but it does start with a love of the subject and the ability to see yourself doing it intensively and long-term, and as I said, I just feel like life’s far too short to pick something you only think will make you rich (since if you hate it, that’s years of your life you can’t get back, and it might not work out anyway).
I’m always happy to answer questions to the best of my ability, if you want to drop back in. And happy historinerding.

Annotated edition, Week in Ethereum News, March 15 issue
The number of EthCC attendees (for the record, most people I talk to now think the afterparty was the main spreading event) testing positive since I published the newsletter, even while many can’t get tested. So no caffeine or beer for me just in case I’m affected (though I left the afterparty very early), and that lack of caffeine is pulling me down just a little. This might be a low-energy, “please clap” Jeb annotated issue.

A summary of the post-EthCC Stateless Eth meetings. Renewed focus on sync, particularly getNodeData
A writeup post-stateless ETH summit after ethCC as well as a summary. Quiet times usually follow productive meetings, hence only 2 bullet points this week.

Vitalik’s Using polynomial commitments to replace state roots, though this is not likely to hit the current roadmap. More context from listening to Justin Drake and Vitalik Buterin on Zero Knowledge
So my current estimate (completely my own) is that we’re likely looking at late q2 for phase0 launch. But who knows, maybe getting locked down will provide a small speedup? <wry grin>
I continue to think that by far the most important thing after shipping phase 0 is turning off proof of work. Stop wasting electricity! Cut issuance!

Crypto carnage, Maker liquidations
Thursday’s global selloff of risk assets led to the most negative price action day of crypto’s short history. The selloff inflated gas prices (~200 gwei) which caused trouble for Maker. The Maker oracles stopped working for an hour or two.
Maker liquidation auctions went off for nearly 0 DAI as bots bidding on those auctions got caught in high gas prices and ran out of DAI, leading several different bot maintainers to make ~8m USD in ETH by bidding just above zero in a few disparate time periods.
As a result, the Maker system surplus became a 5.7m Dai deficit (as of the time of publication). To improve incentives, Maker governance changed some parameters and to recoup the debt MKR will be auctioned onchain for lots of 50,000 Dai on the morning (UTC) of March 19th.
Community members have started a backstop to ensure the deficit is covered
Here is a writeup of the Maker liquidations with data and graphs
Just published: Maker governance proposal to change DSR to 0 and Stability Fee to 0.5%, GSM to 4 hours, and a decentralized circuitbreaker for auctions
An interesting thing I just learned is that Maker’s standard keeper apparently only works in Parity, not with Geth or Infura. So that’s another ramification of the Kovan/Rinkeby split, and getting Maker to use Kovan.
In the meantime, USDC has been added as a collateral. It’s rather strange but USDC perhaps makes sense as a way to mint DAI in times of stress and get closer to the peg. Seems like the Stability Fee should be set high here though, as you really only want people using it in times of needing Dai, eg in auctions. Right now it’s 20%, i’m not sure that’s as high as it should be.
This newsletter doesn’t often mention price and market-related matters. But it’s quite clear that crypto is not a safe haven in crisis. Could it be in the future? Perhaps, but all the hedge funds and institutional money simply exacerbate volatility. Where we’re at is that when people wanted to take risk off the table, they viewed crypto as a risk asset - and Bitcoin got hit the hardest because it had survived the best in crypto winter, despite there being no reason whatsoever for it to have done the best.

Governance as a whole has probably been one of Ethereum’s weak points. Not as bad as governance-by-Blockstream, but still not great. People don’t turn out to vote so direct voting doesn’t work (to wit, Aragon removing voting which was the only use for ANT) - and yet one of the solutions for people not voting actually penalizes people for voting, as I’ve found out in DxDAO. I’m hopeful for some of the solutions but to date long-term governance of everything is mostly an unsolved issue.

Nice to see people are still trying to build social media alternatives. The idea of building a better Facebook is definitely an enthralling one - yet not one that Ethereum has even come close to delivering.
Same with games - we’ve been talking about tokens/NFTs on ETH being a big thing in games for awhile. Nothing has quite hit it (let’s be honest, CryptoKitties was just a different flavor of ICO mania) but I think Skyweaver might.
My usual ex-post metric of seeing how much of this section is DeFi: 10 bullet points, depending on how you count you could say it’s 4 to ~8.

wBTC passes Lightning Network in value locked up
Matthew Green: US congressional bill EARN IT is a direct attack on e2e encryption
Mass panic like with Corona is always a perfect moment to add bills on as riders to must-pass bills, so look for anti-encryption hawks to try to do this in the name of “safety.” Maybe even to bailout bills.
Kinda interesting to see CMC finally add Uniswap volume. They’ve been quite slow to add dexes generally; it seems like Bitcoiners often have a hard time adjusting to decentralization when they’ve been used to all the centralized BTC tradeoffs.
And Circle is now all-in on USDC. From Santander prototype at Devcon2 to $600m now printed, and this doesn’t even count Tether belatedly realizing that BTC was a terrible choice to secure Tether.
General

Ryan Sean Adams’ “how to” on using ProtonMail or equivalent is the 2nd most clicked, showing how he’s one of the most important people in Ethereum right now. He takes concepts them and popularizes them.
The random browser fingerprints is huge, and a big step up in privacy.
Meanwhile if you have 2gb or 3gb GPUs, you can fold some proteins which may have an impact on COVID-19. I’m always skeptical, but it seems likely to be worth the cost. Especially if you’re like me and get super cheap electricity in Texas through GridPlus! Crypto is not cancelled in Texas.

Academics have grown increasingly uncomfortable with this arrangement in recent years because we’re giving our work for free to companies that are severely limiting access to it, all while making billions of dollars.
Over the last several years, I painstakingly reviewed all of my previous copyright transfer agreements and, in cases where it was permitted, I uploaded a version of each of my articles to file-sharing sites like AcademiaEdu and ResearchGate.
I guess I was naïve, though. Initially, I thought those sites were solutions to the problem of poor research access. However, I’ve come to learn that these are large and growing for-profit companies that, just like journal publishers, are harvesting free labor from academics. We’re building a massive research infrastructure for them—and the profit potential is so big that these companies have some of the biggest venture capital firms in the world investing in them.
In supporting companies like AcademiaEdu and ResearchGate, we’re simply transferring power and control over access to research to a new set of companies—companies that can and are looking for ways to cash in on that power.
For example, a couple of years ago, AcademiaEdu toyed with charging users to get their papers “recommended” on the site.

Academics have grown increasingly uncomfortable with this arrangement in recent years because we’re giving our work for free to companies that are severely limiting access to it, all while making billions of dollars.
For example, a couple of years ago, AcademiaEdu toyed with charging users to get their papers “recommended” on the site.
Can you get an MIT education for $2,000? | Scott Young | TEDxEastsidePrep
Translator: Israel Fernandez Martin Reviewer: Helena Bedalli for those who’ve been watching the news as of late, have mostly visible snap shots like this. Students are protesting because their government is chopping subsidies to education. And the giant part of the cause for this, both the federal government chopping subsidies and pupil now cry is that getting a tuition education doesn’t fee what it used to. Should you graduated greater than 2 a long time ago, you perhaps amazed to know that it now fees pupils over two and a half times as much because it did for you, and that’s in real greenbacks for any economists in the viewers right here. It’s not an easy quandary. On one hand the fee is fitting harder for both, pupils and government to bare. But within the different hand employers are stressful an knowledgeable personnel. They need employees with tricky analytical expertise. The arena now runs oot of what we dig out of humans brains no longer simply what we dig out of the bottom. So, that’s the hindrance. Now what’s the fix? Let me be absolutely sincere with you. I have no concept. But what I wish to endorse is that might be we have been looking in the wrong place. We have been anticipating change to come from faculties and governments, but what if the trade came from us. I’d wish to share my story and suggest that perhaps an education doesn’t ought to be high-priced and what’s more, perhaps we are able to be trained higher without it. So in my case I used to be fortunate. After I was once authorised to school, I managed to narrow down my alternative in fundamental to two choices: industry and computer science. I used to be fairly all for both. With one you get to build firms, with the opposite you get to build applied sciences. And these two should not mutually special. In spite of everything bill Gates was once a hacker before he developed an empire. (Laughter) however in my college I could only major in one. So I did what any freshman would do, and did a cautious rational fee-advantage evaluation. (Laughter) So trade it was once, and after graduating I haven’t any regrets. I learned rather a lot and i had a satisfactory time. But after finishing my education, I had this eager for the trail now not taken. I relatively wanted to learn computer science. But going again to school did not enchantment to me four extra years of my existence, acceptance boards, training bills, I failed to want to postpone my lifestyles and rack up debt, just to pursue a curiosity. I wanted the education, now not the school. Then I remembered that Universities like MIT, Harvard, Stanford, had a habit of striking up courses on-line at no cost.I’ve completed a couple of of these before after which a notion happened to me. If you could gain knowledge of a class, why not an whole degree. That used to be the commencing of an test. Would it not be viable to get an MIT schooling in computer science with out ever going to MIT? So it is an interesting concept, but already you could as a rule detect the complexities and objections that may elevate so going to the MIT is much more than simply what you study in the study room.So how are you going to potentially hope to duplicate whatever which is this kind of multifaceted expertise. So I prefer to suppose tuition is rather a lot like consuming at a five famous person restaurant. You are in no way paying for simply the food. You get the wait employees, stylish decor, the fancy french wines. You are procuring a tricky and multifaceted expertise. And the equal is true at institution. You get networking along with your mental friends, research opportunities and credentials from elite institutions. And like the fondness restaurant you get a enormous bill at the end. And you know what, normally this process works, however just as you probably do not want to go to a 5 famous person restaurant, at any time when you get hungry, you on the whole additionally do not want to go back to institution whenever you need to learn some thing.I didn’t want the 5 direction meal. I desired my education "a la carte". So what mattered most to me, was once being competent to recognize the huge strategies of pc science; like algorithms, synthetic intelligence, encryption, and the internet. And being able to put in force those strategies in computer applications. So I determined to make my mission easy. My goal will likely be to check out to cross the checks an MIT student would do and to do the programming tasks. I admit it is a simplification. It omits a number of the MIT experiences. However for what I wanted to get out of it, it used to be an exceptional simplification. And what mattered more, it was once a simplification that worked. So I was once capable to build a curriculum of 33 classes, that with one or two minor exceptions was once identical to the direction record an MIT scholar would use. And i was ready to construct this making use of best MIT’s free online available information. The only price was for a number of textual content books which meant I could comply with this whole program for under $2000. So I had my goal and now i’ve the fabric. Now for the difficult phase: really learning MIT lessons. I’m now not kidding myself, MIT is a fairly rough university it’s notoriously complex even for brilliant scholars and what’s extra, i’m no longer going to have the support of faculty, and professors, and classmates that i can readily get support from.In thought the venture’s viable however it was too difficult in practice. When I told my pals about this, that I used to be planning on doing an MIT measure on my own, they strengthened these doubts. They advised me they would not think seeking to be trained a MIT measure in your possess. It might be too difficult with out constant steering and help of faculty contributors. However that last point did not ring true for me, due to the fact once I went to university, I was in lecture halls like this one, the place the professor would provide a speak to an auditorium full of 300 students.Yeah, sure that if I had a question I could rise my hand, but if rather did not fully grasp something it used to be as much as me to learn it so possibly the doubts and issues over do-it-yourself degree, had extra to do with it being unconventional, than it being in reality more elaborate than a proper software. As I began doing the first few lessons, my results were even more stunning.I located I used to be equipped to be taught faster utilizing this procedure than I ever had even as in institution. So far from being an difficulty, it grew to become out that not going to MIT had made my job lots simpler. Good enough, in order that last bit deserves just a little bit of clarification. In any case, an MIT scholar has entry to the whole thing I do, and much far more. How am i able to possibly have an knowledge over a student when i have a fewer resources? It defies common experience. So so as to explain this, I need to do some bit of a detour. I must go into the geeky realm of private productiveness. So there’s a device referred to as the time log. And right here is how the time log works. You jot down the starting and the stopping occasions for each pastime you do. And i mean every activity, from when you wake up in the morning, to whilst you take out the rubbish. My wager is that most of you right here have certainly not completed a time log earlier than, due to the fact that just imagine how demanding that is to do.But should you do one, the results will also be eye-opening. This is a recent Wall avenue Journal article the place the reporter did simply that. She writes: "I quickly realized i might been lying to myself about the place the time used to be going. What I idea used to be a 60-hour workweek wasn’t even shut. I might have guessed I spent hours doing dishes when in fact I spent minutes. I spent long stretches of time misplaced on the internet or puttering around the residence, uncertain precisely what I was doing." considering that i am colossal geek I’ve carried out time logs earlier than and i will be able to say the predicament is even worse for pupils. The giant majority of time pupils spend, isn’t spent studying, it’s spent commuting to classification, copying notes at Starbucks, and looking to stay conscious in lectures. In the event you could whole up the amount of time that students spend forming new perception, and remembering data which is of course what studying is, it could be tiny. And for probably the most phase, this isn’t even the student’s fault. In spite of everything, entrepreneurs most often realize a startling difference in their productiveness, at a begin-up versus a gigantic firm. Large institutions imply paperwork. They mean paper work, they imply doing what you are advised rather of what’s principal. So being an academic entrepreneur can present some studying advantages over individuals in a formal procedure. So, take lectures as a excellent instance So, after I would do MIT lectures, when I started doing the lessons, i’d watch them at one and a half times the pace. This may sound very complicated, but the difference is barely audible in human speech, if it goes too fast, you simply hit rewind. Scholars in a regular lecture room should not have access to a rapid-forward or rewind button, even though i’m guessing most of them would favor one. And the have an effect on of this is not trivial. Through being ready to look at lectures at a rather turbo p.C., and staring at them sequentially, I was once capable to take lessons that in most cases span four months, and watch them in two days of actual time. Or take assignments. Pupils do assignments seeing that they need to.Sure, mostly they facilitate learning, however normally they don’t. For example, in case you are suffering from a notion why wait weeks to get your solutions again? When I would do a rough MIT task, i might do the questions with the solution key in hand, one query at a time, considering it is tight feedback loops like this that cognitive scientists respect as being important to learning. And you don’t have to be a genius to apply these strategies both. Being competent to replay keys segments of lectures; being ready to get instantaneous suggestions for your advantage; these are structural advantages that benefit gradual newbies as much as they advantage rapid ones. So, where am I correct now? As of this moment I’ve completed 20 of the 33 laptop science courses within the MIT curriculum. And by way of completed I mean I’ve handed those ultimate tests and that i did the programing projects related to these lessons. What’s extra, considering the fact that of speed-united states of americalike this that i have stated, i’m on monitor of finishing the program in twelve months rather of four years. So at present the massive subject is about how technological know-how goes to alter academic institutions and lecture rooms. I think this misses the point. The giant upheavals in education don’t seem to be going to be about faculties, they’ll be about scholars. And i’m not alone in believing this. There may be already grassroot organizations looking to rethink education, no longer from the top-down but from the backside-up. These are movements that aren’t planned by means of colleges or governments, however from scholars who are fed up with the confined options the present procedure supplies. Schooling hacking is the brand new development. So billionaire investor Peter Thiel offers a hundred,000 greenback scholarship to scholars, to not go to university however to drop out, and anything intriguing. So when the pleasant and brightest and most prompted start singling their skill via not going to college, the leisure of the world will take discover. And it’s not an "all or nothing" proposition both. Jay go, the founding father of "homemade measure" is hanging collectively a record of universities established on the number of transfers credits they receive. That means that you can go to a real school, and get an actual measure, but diminish the amount of time you ought to spend learning in the classroom. Universities aren’t going away every time quickly, they will perpetually offer things self-schooling will leave out. They’re a satisfactory expertise despite the fact that they are often an pricey one. However that mentioned, I feel self-education is the longer term. No More Triple Pay Loop System For Scientific Publication
Orvium to end the researcher injustice
There has been injustice among the researcher, and the source of such injustice is the triple pay loop system. This system is the current environment for any scientific publication that not only harms the research it also harms the science as a whole. This system makes every researcher lose their motivation and willingness to do more research and thus can hinder the progress of scientific advancement, this injustice system will make the society prefer the predatory or low-quality journal which the source and the ideas are questionable. These journals are made only to advance someone on their academic career, or in pursuit of a certain academic degree. The low-quality journal nowadays has plagued the internet and being used mostly by every student of the university.
The triple pay system simply comes like this. The government pay the researcher by a minimum fee, since they work on a voluntary basis, and thus make them lack in research motivation. Then the researcher will do a research on their respective field, and thus give it to the publisher for free. Then the publisher will sell it to the government, and the government sells it to the academic institution, which is likely to be read by the scientist who made the research. This not only insulting the researcher but also will make them underpaid since the researcher needs to share their money in an unfair amount to the government and the publisher. This is what makes the researcher lower their journal quality and thus making it cheaper.
But this indeed poses a long-term threat, where the research that has been conducted by any scientist and researcher will not be very informative and innovative. It will contain a less useful data which are not quiet impactful towards the society and thus giving them no solution regarding the current problem. This is truly ironic since the scientists are the vanguard of science to generate solution towards the societal problem. We need to cut off the root of the problem, and ending this vicious cycle. After an extensive research, we can find it easily that the main problem of this cycle is the researcher that is being discriminated and treated unfairly, whereas the publisher hog all the profit for themselves, and the government do little about the current situation.
The second problem that is haunting the researcher is the idea thievery. This is actually a dilemma for the entire researcher. In one side, they know once they publish their work online, they will be threatened by several issues such illegal download, an idea being stolen, and so on. This is what makes the researcher afraid of publishing their work online. But if they are not publishing their work online, therefore they work and their name will never be recognized and thus they will not gain a profit they need to continue their research.
Next problem is the length of the validation process. As we already know, the validation and assessment process is what makes the researcher discouraged to submit a new research. This validation process is the most important process for every researcher since they can finally license their research and therefore gain profit by selling it. But unfortunately, the researcher needs to take a good time waiting their research being reviewed by the peer reviewers.
For further information you can access several links below:

Those dire situations we have mentioned above can be tackled down by the emerging platform that could intermediate between the reader and the peer reviewers. This way, the peer reviewers could conduct the reviews immediately after the paper has been published. Doing the reviews is also rewarding in this platform, and therefore the peer reviewers will have a huge motivation in doing so. The researcher will also become motivated by doing more research since it is more rewarding and promising. This is the sole solution to disrupt the triple pas system that has been haunting the researcher for decades.
Introducing Orvium, A Solution For Every Researcher
To put it more briefly, we shall state several benefits that are obtainable once the researcher joins the environment of orvium.
Zero delay publication
As we have stated before, the delay is what annoys the researcher. Since this platform is decentralized, meaning there will be no queue in the line, and the peer reviews can be conducted the moment the paper has been submitted to the system. This is indeed a huge difference between the conventional methods and the orvium platform. The decentralized models meaning that the paper and the peer reviews can be met inside the platform, without the intervention of the platform itself. This works similarly just like any social media you can see. You can chat whoever you want without asking permission to the platform.
Authors are licensed
The license is also obtainable on this platform, as that is the most basic thing for every paper published by every publisher. Like any publisher, this platform will also gain a license and it is selectable whether it is a free license or the paid license. But either way, the author will be given a full copyright property once their paper has been licensed by the platform. The licensing process also not takes a long time, unlike any other private or governmental publisher. Through this license, the researcher can sell their paper and gain profit within or outside the orvium platform.
Cost effective journals or paper
There are complaints about the cost of one journal that is too high, and therefore not liable for any student to obtain it. This is worrying since the student will now prefer the predatory and low-quality journal that has invaded the internet. The platform will reduce the cost of publishing the journal, and therefore the journal can be sold at a reasonable price. This way, both the researcher and the public will receive a great benefit. The public can purchase the journal in a relatively cheap way, and the researcher will have a larger income since the number of sales are rising, and their name will be known too.
High tech security technology
One of the most feared things that ever haunts the researcher are the idea thievery or the illegal download. This obviously makes the researcher are severely discouraged by doing any more research since they know that their hard work is being illegally downloaded by the people, as they have spent so much money for their research, and they expect the payment to cover the research expense. If the researcher utilizes the orvium platform, then this situation will not happen since the orvium employs the blockchain technology which will protect the document from being stolen or illegally downloaded. The research paper will be able to be downloaded via an orvium token, or be purchased by any other currency.
Research Publication Current Market
The business of research publication is usually undermining since it is not a major business sector in the world. But, that is actually a false premise since the publishing business in the term of research is steadily growing, over 25 billion dollars annually. This is promising business, but yet it has been plagued by the downright features of triple pay loop system. Currently, there are 9 million active researchers in the world and are producing millions of researches annually. And as we know, that number will still grow by the growth of the researcher annually, and the demand for their research too.
That is understandable since the technological advancement, as well as the civilization advancement heavily, relies on the researcher. That is why this platform wants to give a reward for them, as they have actively engaged in the betterment of society as a whole. But unfortunately, there are several barriers that have been erected between the public and the research, such as:
Scientific and social factors
This factor is the most common factors known to all researcher. This factor includes their idea being stolen, or their paper being illegally downloaded. They also fear their reputation as they try to approach an issue by the different angle. They also distrust common people knowledge, as they can’t comprehend what the researcher means, and that will render their research useless as the demand the more simple and practical use of their research.
Technology
This is more likely to come from the demand of the industry since they demand more technology and ideas that are usually impracticable and unnecessary. They also demand that the researcher follows what the company wants, and therefore prohibiting them to make any innovation. In the less advanced countries, there are many brilliant scientists that are capable of producing a good research but lack of infrastructure; therefore, they need to postpone their research or to move to another developed country. The research paper are also scattered across the world, and disorganized, and therefore need to be integrated further.
Policies
The policies that are imposed by the government or the private enterprise are often not suitable for the researcher. There is countless examples such the time-consuming peer review process, the licensing that is too costly, and so forth. The policies that government-imposed are usually too pragmatic, meaning they only want the research that has the usefulness of the practical situation, rather than a more idealistic approach.
Those issues are really hindering the research effort conducted by the researcher and therefore making the academic world more and more contaminated by the low-quality journal that is made with less effort and less money to spend. This is actually a threat to the long-term situation where humanity’s science will be gradually declining and hampering the civilization growth.
Fortunately, the market entry of orvium is ready to break those barriers by enhancing the system to be beneficial for both the researcher and the public. This system will be proved so prospective for the researcher and will encourage the researcher to do more research in the future.
As for the sales of this token, unfortunately, the website has not yet launched the exact date for the pre-sales. But as expected around this month, according to their grand plan, which is somewhere in the second and third quarter of the year. but we do know the exact amount of token that will be sold, which are around 379 million dollars’ worth. The hard cap of the sale will be around 20 million dollars cap, as the soft cap is not defined yet by the orvium. As for the distribution, of the token, only 60% token will be sold publicly, as the rest of them will be distributed to the advisor, team, and developer.
The token acquisition methods are various; one of the simplest methods is through purchase via dollars or any other currency. The only currency that is acceptable by the orvium is ETH, where one token worth around 0.10 dollars. This number will eventually rise after the pre-sales, and as the demands of this token arise, and the supply of token is not changed. If you do like investment, then it is better for you to join the pre-sales since this pre-sale will give you a certain sum of the bonus of token.
The second method of acquiring this token is to give the peer review. Giving any per review will reward you with the medium token, and therefore giving the reviews now are so rewarding and benefiting for the reviewer. As the token utility, you can use the token for purchasing any kind of paper that exist in the platform, or you can also exchange that token to obtain a more reliable source of exchange, such dollars.
This form of business is what gives the maximum benefit for the reviewer and the researcher. This environment also very proper for the business development, as the research will goes on and rewarded, rather than utilizing the current environment which is more complex and punishing for the researcher, and thus discourages the further research.

News round-up: Universities are hoarding £44bn in reserves – but the cost of a student loan will rise
Universities now hold three times as much in reserves as they did in 2011-12, just before higher tuition fees were introduced
Universities sit on £44bn after tuition fee increase
The Times, 27/04/2018, Rosemary Bennett
Universities are ‘hoarding’ £44 billion of reserves, more than the entire annual schools budget, according to a report on their finances. University wealth has ballooned since tuition fees were trebled in 2012. Budget surpluses in the last academic year amounted to £2.27 billion across the UK’s 164 universities, more than double the £1.11 billion surplus in 2011-12, the year before the higher tuition fees came in. Total income last year was £35.7 billion, up about a third since 2011-12.
However, it is the reserves that are most striking in the annual sector accounts, published by the Higher Education Statistical Authority (HESA). The year before tuition fees rose to £9,000, reserves stood at £14.7 billion. In the 2016-17 academic year they were worth £44.27 billion.
Nick Hillman, chief executive of the Higher Education Policy Institute, said that with so much uncertainty around the future of university finances, accumulating reserves was sensible and likely to continue.
Student loans: mother threatens court action which could save graduates thousands
The Daily Telegraph, 27/04/2018

Why we should bulldoze the business school
The Guardian [journal], 27/04/2018, Martin Parker
Feature about business schools and why they should be abolished: “Business schools have huge influence, yet they are also widely regarded to be intellectually fraudulent places, fostering a culture of short-termism and greed. […] Many business school professors, particularly in north America, have argued that their institutions have gone horribly astray. B-schools have been corrupted, they say, by deans following the money, teachers giving the punters what they want, researchers pumping out paint-by-numbers papers for journals that no one reads and students expecting a qualification in return for their cash (or, more likely, their parents’ cash). At the end of it all, most business-school graduates won’t become high-level managers anyway, just precarious cubicle drones in anonymous office blocks.”
Student complaints about UK universities growing, says watchdog
The Guardian, 26/04/2018, Richard Adams
Complaints to the universities watchdog are on the rise again, with unhappy students receiving a total of more than £650,000 in refunds and compensation last year.
The annual report of the Office of the Independent Adjudicator showed that an increasing proportion of complaints were from students dissatisfied with poor facilities, and with course content differing to what was originally offered. Complaints also arose over a lack of teaching and supervision.

Drugs ‘used by two in five students’

About two in five students are drug users, says a study from the National Union of Students. But the students’ union argues that students should not be disciplined for ‘drug-related behaviour that does not constitute a criminal offence’.
The most widely used drugs, in a survey of 2,800 students, were cannabis, ecstasy, nitrous oxide and cocaine. A formal warning was the most common disciplinary action taken by universities over drug use.
The NUS report found drug use to be ‘a common, although infrequent, behaviour’ – with 39% of students using drugs, and cannabis by far the most widely used.
A further 17% had used drugs before, meaning 56% in total had at some time tried them.
UK universities use business schools as cash cows
Financial Times, 25/04/2018, Jonathan Moules
The number of UK universities offering business degrees has increased by 44 per cent in the past nine years, as they try to boost their finances with revenue from business students.
Some 102 UK institutions offered business degree programmes in 2009, the first year the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, the business school accreditation body, started compiling national figures. That number has now risen to 147. Of these, 31 have received prestigious AACSB accreditation, compared with 13 in 2009.
‘Graduate premium’ holds steady despite rising student numbers
Financial Times, 24/4/2018, Gavin Jackson
A rapid increase in the number of students going to university in the UK has done little to reduce the difference between graduate earnings and non-graduate earnings, according to figures published on Tuesday by the Department for Education.
Working-class students pay premium for being poor, report says
The Guardian, 23/04/2018, Sally Weale
Working-class students are penalised by a ‘poverty premium’, often paying higher costs to continue studying in a university environment in which they may feel isolated and as though they do not belong, according to a report.
Research for the National Union of Students finds that student expenditure routinely outstrips income from loans, leaving many whose parents cannot afford to subsidise them without the means to pay for basics such as food and heating.
Fees for halls are often unaffordable for those struggling on maintenance loans, with many universities setting rents above inflation to generate additional income, the study claims.
It quotes the results of a freedom of information request by the University of East Anglia students’ union, which found that more than 20 higher education institutions generated more than £1,000 profit per bed space a year.
Ministers under fire as student loan interest hits 6.3%
The Guardian, 18/04/2018, Richard Partington
Ministers are facing renewed criticism over university funding after an increase in student loan borrowing costs using a ‘flawed’ measure of inflation. The interest rate on loans for students in England, Wales and Northern Ireland will rise by up to 6.3% from September, up from the current 6.1% for anyone who started studying after 2012.
The change is a consequence of the increase in the retail price index (RPI) for last month to 3.3% from 3.1% in March a year ago. The government links the interest rate on student loans to the RPI reading for March each year, plus 3%.
Economists have long criticised the government for using RPI, which is typically higher than other measures of inflation and fails to take into account some forms of household costs. The RPI lost its status as a national statistic in 2013 and the Office for National Statistics advises against its use.
