Electives: music theory + music composition
BIOGRAPHY!
imagine this.
you’re born in zheijang to two loving and talented musiciansㅡone a singer, the other a composerㅡbut you’re also born to high expectations. a little ukulele handed to your little hands. if that didn’t work out, a little guitar. and then a little drum, a little microphone, a little cello. it gets a little tiring, if you’re being honest. barely blooming into childhood and having your plans being made for you. (then again, you suppose that’s what it’s like to be a child.)
six years old and you find your talent lying in the ivory keys of a piano. your parents are delighted when you finish playing Für Elise (a watered down version, of course. you’re six, not a prodigy yet. that comes later.) and they clap. you notice the relieved look on their faces and think that they’re more glad you’re not completely musically inept as they feared you would be, and the zhou family name can live on to be known as the one to be feared in music. so it continues.
you get better and better, the pieces become longer and longer, the applause rings in your ears.
the press say they’ve never heard such a talented ten year old pianist, even though that’s a lie and in a few years they’ll probably replace you for some newer, carbon copy. you know they’ll never be as good as you, though, no matter how hard they try. between music sheets and new pianos, you find comfort in the art of dance. it’s unheard of to your parents, who file everything under music and not music. they don’t stop you, though. they say they won’t, as long as you stay as the child prodigy of zheijang.
you become the ex child prodigy when you’re thirteen.
it’s an odd age for you. a teenager now, and no longer considered as extraordinary as before. you can play ten minute pieces on the piano, dance to ten minute songs, but it’s not remarkable. youth gets stepped on and in the industry where the younger you are, the better you will be when you grow. the news stop headlining your performances and even if your parents are still well known, you can’t help but feel shameful at the thought of the crown that gets swiped off your head. “teenage prodigy” doesn’t sound as impressive.
you come home one day to packed bags and three one way tickets to korea. when you ask, your parents reply with “a new beginning.” you wonder why, but never voice it. they’re your parents, anyways, you have no right to wonder. even when it’s hard to adjust to the life there, the strange language and mannerisms, the occasional stare of one who feels as though they’ve seen you somewhere before but don’t have the guts to ask, you never once complain to your parents.
because you find your piano and dance does all the talking.
it’s nice, to receive applause and wide eyed wonder in another country where you can start from the beginning again. just pop up out of nowhere, a teenager from china that’s talented beyond words. it only takes a bit of research for people to find your old performances and think: wow, i really just saw that in real life. you’d be lying if you say the praise doesn’t please you, make you preen.
so you begin to rebuild your reputation, your family grows proud again, you feel the weight of the crown resting atop your head where it belongs. the language barrier isn’t hard anymore, even if you stutter now and then, you find it easier to pick up. it’s not long before schools come into mind and your parents search frantically for a prestigious high school that you deserve to go to.
kurin arts academy is what they decide on. you check it out on the website, find that it’s got a dance club and an orchestra. there’s nothing more you want, really, so you shrug your shoulders and end the topic with a “sure.”
it’s a good school. prestigious, dealing with the arts yet maintaining a respectable amount of science and maths. you find yourself liking it, liking the sunbaes and teachers and lessons. there’s not that much to complain about, even though sometimes you come home with tired legs, tired fingers and a dull ache in your bones. you write it off as something you should get used to: you’re a pianist and dancer, it happens.
you can stop imagining this is you now. because it’s not. it’s zhou jinhai.

She struggled with the subject throughout her whole life and never got better. With other subjects she has always exceeded, especially art. Electives: graphic design and digital animation
BIOGRAPHY!
Kim Jieun was born on April 4th into a very talented family. Her father is the CEO of Crystal Entertainment who is currently leading the kpop scene and was part of a past popular boy group Electric, mother is a famous violinist, and her older brother by two years is a famous pianist. Jieun lived with expectation throughout her whole life due to her family’s status.
From the minute she was born, she was known as the “next star” of the family.
When she was five she was taught flute as a way for her to be part of the family. She was given private lessons by the best and competed in competitions winning awards. Even though she was an amazing flute player.
Growing up, she did not live a normal childhood, her parents kept her inside (besides school) and made her practice the flute. Watching animation on tv was her way of enjoying her childhood. Without her parents knowing, she would draw in her room, practicing everyday to increase her skills.
Soon she learned through art that life could be fun and found her passion: animation. When it was time for her to apply for Kurin and everyone expected for her to apply for the performing art department. Her father, mother, and brother all applied for performing art, but she took a chance and applied for art specially for animation. She sent in her application and demo reel of some of her work and she was accepted.
Her whole family sees her as a disappointment and her brother turned his back on her as he was caught up in his life.
She took art classes and soon picked up animation. She realized true happiness when she makes art and realizes that the flute is not the right thing for her. When her parents wanted to apply for Kurin, she was expected to go in as flute, but she secretly applied for art especially for animation. Of course her parents disapproved and was furious, but for once she did not care and continued to do what she loves.

Muse name: Lee Haneun Birthday (or age): 15.05.1999 (17) Faceclaim: Kim Jisoo (Blackpink) School: Kurin Grade: Second year Desired clubs: Dance club and Cheer squad (both as members) Positive traits: Bright, modest, honest Negative traits: Blunt, spoilt, temperamental Proficiency: She is especially good at the performing arts (dance in particular). With her mother as a Korean teacher, it is no surprise that Haneun is good at the subject too. English has been an interest of hers and truth be told, Haneun is quite good at it too. The two subjects that she can’t deal with, however, are Science and Maths. She’s not bad at science. It’s just that Haneun doesn’t like the subject itself. Maths, however, was a different story. Perhaps Haneun is allergic to numbers but she just can’t seem to understand anything when it came to maths. Electives: Music Theory, Music Composition
BIOGRAPHY!
Born on the 15th May, 1999, Haneun is the third and last child. Her mother is a school teacher, teaching Korean at a local high school while her father is a police. Being the only girl and the youngest, Haneun got almost everything she wanted growing up. Daehan (the eldest) and Daeeun (second son) were six and five years older than she was, respectively. Naturally, her brothers doted on her too and were really protective of her. Like most little girls were, Haneun was taken to ballet classes at a young age of four while her brothers were taking Taekwondo in the next studio. She initially wanted to do ballet because she ‘looked pretty’ in a tutu but stuck with it because she fell in love with the dance itself. Haneun was never a shy child, always glad to do a little performance for her family whenever they asked. Since then, she had been taking part in dance competitions, occasionally winning a few trophies. Apart from ballet, Haneun also took up modern dance when she was eight and dabbled a little in hiphop when she was ten before deciding that the latter was not for her. In kindergarten and elementary school, Haneun was always described by her teachers as the brightest child. She always participated in class and was always the first to have her hand up whenever the teachers asked if they would like to take part in the school’s musical and other kinds of events. And because of her personality, she made a lot of friends. She received countless presents on her birthday and was known to have the best birthday parties. As she grew, however, the bluntness was starting to be a part of her otherwise perfectly charming personality. In kindergarten and elementary, Haneun never understood if something was the newest or prettiest. Though in middle school, she started noticing that not everyone would have the same hair accessories or the newest toy that took the whole school by a storm. She would then point those without the newest models out. Or if someone did not look their best that day, Haneun would be the first to say something. Slowly, she started losing friends in school because they did appreciate her honesty. Coupled with her temper, Haneun spent a lot of her middle school time sitting alone for lunch, being picked last for groups, etc. But it was a talent show that saved Haneun from loneliness. It was an interschool talent show and each class was required to send out two participants. Haneun was nominated by her teacher and eventually won the talent show with a ballet routine. Other students were starting to overlook the flaws in her personality and she made a few friends. It did not take much convincing for her parents to let Haneun attend Kurin Performing Arts Academy. Her reason for wanting to attend was simple, because her friends were applying for Kurin too. But soon, she discovered that she could study what she loved and was passionate about and that only strengthened her resolve to attend Kurin. With Daehan doing well with his business management degree and Daeeun working to be a police like their father, Haneun was allowed to do as she pleased with only one condition; she had to keep up with her grades.

So, by the time he reached his mid-teens, his parents have signed him up for an audition with the Kurin school of Performing Arts. There, he was able to show his capabilities and unleash his full potential, which ultimately led to him being accepted into the academy. From then onward, Jae would continue his studies and work hard towards his goal of becoming a trainee for any top korean companies and make a living by doing what he does best: Music.
Electives: Music Theory, Music composition, Photography
BIOGRAPHY!
1998; White. Pure white would pour into his vision and then he was placed in his mother’s arms. His mother’s whose face was so pale from what she had just endured and stained from joyful tears running down her cheeks. Brown eyes– warm and new– would try to adjust and his attention would eventually fall upon a man’s face. His father’s. And the words that would come through his lips as he looks at you proudly: “Your sister will come along in just a few minutes, Jaehyun.”
2001; At three years old, young Park Jaehyun had bright eyes and a sharp tongue. His mother wanted her children to become surgeons and therefore had him be taught numbers and the alphabets before he entered into school. However, while his parents went to work at the local pharmacy business that they shared- Jae and his twin sister would be sent to their grandparents until nightfall. There…at the small house made for two elders would be where he had the most fun. Throughout the months ( which turned into years ) that they were babysat, their grandmother taught his sister to sing, while his grandfather taught him how to play various instruments– even dance. On certain days, the duo would even switch off, allowing for both their grandchildren to experience what it means to have a hobby. To have something they enjoyed doing from then on.
2005; The anger in his father’s eyes that day was never forgotten by Jaehyun. It was the day that the science fair project was due and everyone’s parents were in the building, waiting to see what their children had created. His parents, in particular, appeared to be the most excited and yet… he had failed to produce anything at all. And when it came to the big reveal, Jae had escaped through the back of the school with his sister by his side. Together, they hid. Together, they whispered until his grandmother came and found them– a look of sympathy written on her face, before she handed the siblings over to their parents. The anger was overwhelming, yes. But the feeling that he had after he confessed his want to become a performer instead was one that would continue to fuel his passion till this day. He has to prove that he could become successful. Not just for himself, but everyone around him.
2008; At the age of ten, the Park siblings were finally given freedom to do what they love, as opposed to doing what their parents loved. Jae was given his first keyboard, which aided him in writing his own music ( some of which were embarrassing, but eh ). And while his parents now supports his dreams, they still tried to have his grandparents talk him into doing something more…sane, in order to guarantee a bright future. However, his grandfather had sat him down during their usual visit and told him: “Keep moving forward and no matter what happens, there will always be a silver lining.”
2011; Those preteen years saw a long list of hardships, but that was only due to the stress of having to prep himself for an audition with performing art schools. His mom– once again– had urged him to reconsider, but surprisingly, his father had said otherwise. Mr. Park actually helped his son train for the big day and eventually, his mother joined in as well, making sure to create signs with his sister in order to cheer him on. So, throughout the stress…Jae could only think of the positives when he remembers back to his fourteenth year.
2014; Sixteen year old Jaehyun was your average Kurin highschool student; his studies came first, but then girls ( no matter how introverted he may seem ) did catch his attention as well. However, his dreams would always be number one in his mind, no matter the circumstances. Which would also be why he started dance club- an organization ran by a handful of leaders, though he would be the first. And those who wanted to start off in hip-hop or street dance would normally flock to him from then onward.
Present Day; Park Jaehyun is in his third year at Kurin Performing Arts Academy and he thought life was only getting started for him. And it was true, yes, but not in the way he had hoped. During the summer before classes began again, their beloved dog, Choco, got hit by a car and unfortunately died. That would be the first time he’s experienced a death of a loved one, but Jae focused mainly on comforting his sister than himself. But after a month, he managed to get a pup of his own- a shiba inu named Chico ( in honor of their past pet ). However, other news would make itself known and this time….Jae would be the one to take the hardest hit. His grandfather was diagnosed with a rare type of pneumonia and although he had overcome it after a long battle- it evidently took a huge toll on his body due to his age. With his grandfather not being able to move on his own anymore and his lungs continuing to fail by the day- Jae fears that his dreams might get in the way of him spending much needed time with his grandparents. But even so, Jaehyun would refuse to see the reality of things. He refused to believe that death was, once again, imminent in his family. He believed that by holding himself strong, his grandfather would continue fighting for a life he might be able to retain again. After all… there will always be a silver lining no matter what happens. That’s what his grandfather believed and that’s what he’ll keep holding onto. And besides…Jaehyun was supposed to play the Kurin rich-kid, who has no worries whatsoever. That was how many people thought of him and his peers, anyway. He needed to live up to his reputation and just keep to himself.

CLUB INFO:
Starting or joining: Starting
Club name: Dance Club
Additional Notes: For this club, I wish for Jae to be one of the “guides”/“leaders” and for him to be directing the genre of hip hop/street dance.
WRITTEN:
If you are starting: Dance Club is an organization that allows it members to experience the wonder of dance and the joy of performing. Students are exposed to different styles of dance from ballet to theater, modern, hip hop, tap and jazz- this actually depends on the “guides” of this club, who will help teach their peers about their desired genre of dance. Everyone will learn to see dance as an art and as a way of expression. Sometimes it is just the simple expression of fun and joy and other times there is a poignant message to be relayed.
Dance Club allows even the non-dancer to be part of the excitement of the performance. Everyone in Dance club could also participate in the wonder of ( maybe ) an annual show.
And while it holds the title of “club”, if is far from the connotation of the word. Dance Club requires hard work, loyalty, dedication, and commitment.

Proficiency: Although the more academic side to life wasn’t his forte, Kijae has always been well known for his abilities in music, his perfected piano skills and angelic voice, the effortless way he can play a guitar. He’s also no stranger to languages; being fluent in both Korean and English though he’d love to learn more.
BIOGRAPHY!
{ Early Life }
The youngest son to a wealthy family, Kijae grew up with an older brother, father and mother. Their house was never quiet, with his father the CEO to a major record label and his mother a well respected lawyer; business parties, meetings and anniversaries always kept the noise levels up. Kijae was definitely more of an introverted boy, he still is. During his first years of school kids would complain how he never wanted to play with them. It wasn’t that he didn’t like them; he just preferred to play on his own, especially after discovering that banging objects together would make a noise. At the tender age of six years old, Kijae’s parents finally gifted him with a piano and lessons twice a week. The boy was a natural- as if he were a born musician. At it was a few years of begging and pleading before his grandparents gifted him with a guitar, and since then he swore to perfect them both.
{ The Teens }
The thing with growing up with a strict Korean-British family, it required you to be the best of the best. Even more than that. When he wasn’t practising the same piece of music over and over again, his head was stuck in his books. As he got older and reached his middle and high school years, Kijae’s room was overflowing with a hoard of books, paper work, crumpled up sheets and flashcards. His grades were damn near perfect. Despite his efforts, Kijae could never compete with his older brother when it came to the academic side of things, and because his parents were almost against all things creative; it really didn’t help. There was a clear bias of his family, Kijae had to endure endless rants of his parents crushing his dream of being a performer. “You can’t make a career prancing around on stage”. “It’s impossible”. “Why can’t you just be like your brother?”. Now Kijae isn’t that much of a pushover, and the fact that for most of his life his dreams had been stamped on only fuelled his hunger to prove everyone wrong. One night after school as he was practicing, he started to quietly sing along to the music until he got lost within it, belting each note and rhythm until one of his friends walked in and busted him. The boy sat there with his face bright red, his shyness only becoming more prominent as his voice was complimented. It took him a while to warm up to the idea of singing, though once he got used to it he didn’t stop, the angelic melody of his voice was heard anywhere he went.
{ Present Day }
As soon as he was of a decent age, Kijae immediately snagged the opportunity to audition, to get his name out there. After failing at a few companies who deemed him “too young”, he opted to join a school to train up. He was scrolling through his emails and that’s how he stumbled across the name Kurin. He practised day and night until his audition day, his stomach full of butterflies and palms sweaty the entire time. It wasn’t the typical ‘run home to your parents’ ordeal for him. Because once he was accepted, all hell broke loose in the Shin household. His parents had absolutely no intentions of allowing their son to take such a non academic path. After days of not speaking, unless it was an argument; Kijae decided it was time to do something for himself for once. So he packed up and left for Kurin, determined to work as hard as he could so he could finally achieve his dream. A few years have passed since that day; failed attempts of rekindling the relationship with his parents has just made him more passionate. His training is rough, vigorous and time consuming. But he wouldn’t have it any other way. Since he first joined Kurin, Kijae set up an online account to upload his music; probably the best move he’s ever made. Slowly but surely he’s built up a little fanbase for himself, something he’s only ever dreamed of. He always said even if it was just one fan, he’d sing with his life.

BIOGRAPHY!
kwon jamie, is a daughter made for the streets. at the tender age of twelve, she rarely could be seen spending her nights at home, eating dinner with the family. instead, most people would find her on abandoned sites with company that only fueled her desire to bend in with the shadows.
montreal was where she learned to live as she wished, seoul is where she was supposed to find more of a settlement than bewilderment. but what mischief could be had back home, also existed here. or is it that the reason why she feels as if the change was more welcomed than a nuisance the fact that it’s only been three years since she’s been moved to seoul?
been moved is a bit of a weird way of saying it. the whole family moved, settled, made a nest out of the roots her mother always wished to go back to. talks of her children having to learn from their cultures so that they don’t end up like the rest of the kids who never truly understand where they come from. talks of how better it is back in their country and how the kids aren’t as libertines as they are where her husband had been deported.
talks about him finally getting a permanent settlement back home so that she–all of them, could stop moving left and right. talks about how they’re not getting any younger and him never being at home doesn’t help with the children constant wild excursions dark at night. because the nights are where jamie finds herself most of her days. it’s where she knows she belongs and her brother’s given her the taste of it right before it claimed him.
not eternally, of course. there are only bars that hold him, but he says, long as he’s breathing he will never let her forget that when the sun sets she has to breathe in and step out to live as she wishes. don’t let mom tell you that you’re not allowed to, don’t let a father who was never here anyways tell you that you ought to do as he wishes.
letters that pour and gets to her in lyrically put together thoughts. but also, sis, don’t go so far as to lose that freedom. because a cell is not where you belong. you belong out there, sharing what you have, who you are. to the world, to some lucky ones. you’re my precious black stone, and i want you to show them that darkness, can hold more than destruction within its depth.
her brother, always the poet. something they share with their mother. she’s the passionate one in the family, it’s why she doesn’t get along with her children, their father argues. then she argues back, that it’s why she could also manage to stay home and let him go and come as he wishes. because when she’s writing and creating, she loses focus of the time and the world around her.
and jamie, jamie, she’s both her mom and her dad and more than a little of her brother. but she’s also jamie, black hair, open smile, adventure always lingering under her skin. the girl who sings about the life she lives rather than the one she wants to have.
for the love of art, the one thing that will always link her to a side of her family that may never accept the kind of girl she’s turning to be. wishing to be. jamie has let her mother imagine her in cuffs and send her off to kurin performing arts academy, in the hopes that she will raise a good performer out of her. it’s no secret that jamie’s good at singing, she plays two strings instruments, preferably the violin.
it’s no secret that she’s been quite unique from day one, even without her trying or showing it off. accepted in the prestigious school the moment she applied without having to be put in a waiting list, despite her obvious lack of experience in the type of school kurin was, because of her mother’s influence. it is no secret as well that she refused the role of first soloist that was offered to her during her second year at the academy.
because there are limits to how tied up she wants to seem. after all, within her, still lies the rebellious edges of a girl who simply wants to finish a chapter of her life so she can move on to the one where she gets to decide.
in composition, she’s found that she can do that without straying too far from what is expected of her. in learning more about music, she’s found that it’s not that hard to wait–wait until the end of the tunnel is finally reached. one keynote at a time, one melody at a time. until the final one is played off like the melancholic but striking pull of a violinist’s final.
this year is the one before jamie will finally start living.
